Best signing since Palmer: Chelsea now favourites to sign £85m "diamond"

Enzo Maresca’s Blues started the season in red-hot form, dispatching teams and finding themselves second in the Premier League just before Christmas.

However, since then, Chelsea have struggled, dropping points to bottom-half sides and now finding themselves sixth and on the fringes of Champions League qualification.

Cole Palmer has struggled for form in recent months, playing in the middle of the park behind the striker, often dropping deep to receive the ball and aid Chelsea’s progression through the lines.

Whilst his goal-scoring numbers have dropped off, his creativity remains effective, having the joint highest xA (expected assists) in the Premier League this season with 7.9 xA.

With six games to go, it remains in the balance whether the Blues can obtain a precious top five spot, securing Champions League football for next season, in their ability to do so may well impact their ability to sign players this upcoming summer.

Chelsea favourites to sign Bundesliga sensation

According to reports from CaughtOffside, Chelsea are now leading the race and are favourites to sign Borussia Dortmund superstar, Jamie Gittens this summer.

Other Premier League clubs such as Liverpool have shown interest and scouted the 20-year-old winger, but it looks like the Blues may be ahead in the race.

With Jadon Sancho’s future currently in question, the Blues could opt to send the winger back to Manchester United, freeing up funds to acquire Gittens – who has been touted at around £85m – from Dortmund and reinvent the left side of their attacking unit.

Jamie Gittens for Borussia Dortmund.

Gittens has made 44 appearances for the German outfit this campaign, netting 12 goals, providing five assists and totalling 2,648 minutes played. The English winger came through Manchester City’s academy, much like another one of Chelsea’s superstars.

Gittens vs Palmer comparison

Palmer was, of course, signed from Manchester City back in 2023, joining the Blues for a fee of around £40m plus £2.5m in add-ons. That signing has proven to be well worth the investment made, with the 22-year-old already making 82 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 39 goals and providing 24 assists in 6,575 minutes played.

When comparing the underlying metrics of both young England stars, you can see how each of their games differ. Gittens clearly excels at carrying, looking to be direct with the ball at his feet, beating players 1v1 and attacking the box. Meanwhile, Palmer looks to express himself through creative passing, creating for himself and others, whilst also not being afraid to pull the trigger.

The 20-year-old has already been described as the “next English diamond” by Saul Morris, via Football Talent Scout, back in 2023. Since then, we have seen Gittens go on to produce some excellent form with Borussia Dortmund, thus earning him recognition from clubs back in England.

If Gittens does join Chelsea, the ex-Manchester City academy duo could be a lethal combination in attack, with Palmer dropping deep and finding those incisive passes in behind opposition defences, allowing Gittens to attack the box and get those shots off.

All the signs then point to this exciting deal proving to be the Blues’ best since snapping up Palmer in 2023.

Parag's blazing 174 helps Assam mow down 351 against J&K

Jani’s all-round performance knocks TN out and sets up semi-final clash against Karnataka

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Nov-2022..Maharashtra beat Uttar Pradesh by 58 runs after Gaikwad’s 13th List A century powered them to 330 for 5. It was an innings that hardly got out of second gear until the 30th over, before Gaikwad helped them flick a switch. The assault reached a crescendo in the 49th over when Gaikwad took apart left-arm spinner Shiva Singh, who had acceptable figures until then. He eventually ended with 9-0-88-0.Uttar Pradesh also had a centurion in Aryan Juyal, but lack of partnerships in the middle order scuppered their chase. Juyal’s 159 off 143 balls – his third List A century – helped UP get close to the target, but it was always going to be a tall order to win from 154 for 7 in the 32nd over. Shivam Sharma’s 33 at No. 9 was the next-best score for UP. Rajvardhan Hangargekar, the bristling 20-year-old seam-bowling allrounder, picked up his maiden List A five-for to dismantle UP. He was later called on by Gaikwad to share the Player-of-the-match award.File photo – Abhishek Sharma’s ton ended in vain for Punjab•BCCIParag, Juyal’s India Under-19 team-mate from the batch of 2018, set the stage alight at the Gujarat college ground, with his third List A hundred, to help Assam chase down an imposing 351 against Jammu & Kashmir.Incidentally, all of Parag’s centuries have come in this tournament, which makes him the third-highest run-getter this season. He has aggregated 537 runs in eight innings at an average of 76.71 and a strike rate of 122.88. He has also picked up nine wickets, the timing of it significant given there’s been plenty of debate around batters in the top six who can bowl when it comes to the national team. Parag’s knock shaded centuries from J&K’s Shubham Khajuria and Henan Nazir. In Nadiad, Saurashtra‘s Chirag Jani displayed his all-round capabilities as Tamil Nadu‘s campaign came to a halt. Jani’s 31-ball 52 not out gave Saurashtra late impetus as they put up a strong 293 for 8, which was 44 too many for TN. Jani also picked up three wickets with his seam-ups to close out the game.TN’s marauding opening pair of B Sai Sudharsan and N Jagadeesan, who had put up five 150-plus opening partnerships in the league phase, managed just 24 and 8 respectively, and their early dismissals exposed a middle order that hadn’t been tested much. When the returning Dinesh Karthik was dismissed for 9, TN were tottering at 51 for 4. R Sai Kishore made a valiant, career-best 74, but lack of partnerships hurt TN’s quest to gun down the target. At the Motera, Abhishek Sharma’s 109 went in vain as Punjab were beaten by Karnataka. Sharma’s knock laid the foundation for a fighting 235 from Punjab but that wasn’t enough even against a misfiring Karnataka line-up.R Samarth top-scored with 71 to cover enough ground early in the chase to help overcome a middle-order wobble. Vidwath Kaverappa, the seamer, was Karnataka’s best bowler with figures of 4 for 50. With 16 wickets in seven games, Kaverappa is currently the third-highest wicket-taker this season.

Talking Points: Why did Sunil Narine and Andre Russell bowl so late?

Also, was this the game to send Narine in to bat at No. 4? More on Talking Points

Varun Shetty07-Oct-2020Why did Narine bowl so late?
Sunil Narine came on to bowl in the 12th over for the Kolkata Knight Riders against the Chennai Super Kings, when the partnership between Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu was on 64 and CSK needed 74 to win in nine overs. Pat Cummins had just finished his fourth. The delay in his bowling could not have been down to a match-up thing: before this game, Watson had made 88 off 83 Narine deliveries, with eight dismissals. Rayudu had scored 41 off 50 off him, with three dismissals. Clearly, they are not players who are very comfortable against Narine.Which suggests that maybe the plan right from the start was to use Narine in the second half of the innings. We know he has supreme numbers against Dhoni, but surely you don’t hinge your entire plan on that one match-up? What else could it have been, though? Perhaps the fact that the Knight Riders like using Cummins up front, which means the young fast bowlers have to bowl at the death alongside Andre Russell. Instead of handing them that responsibility entirely, it’s possible they decided to give it to Narine instead. The use of Varun Chakravarthy later on in the innings also suggests they might have felt there was something about the conditions that was aiding spin bowling. Chakravarthy got them Dhoni’s wicket, which put serious pressure on CSK at the end of their chase and ultimately turned out to be the finishing touch on a fine tactical win, sealed by Narine’s 19th that went for only 10 when 36 were required.Getty ImagesWhy didn’t Jadeja bowl, and why was Karn so effective?
It’s feels out-of-character for CSK to not rely on spinners, and the numbers back up that feeling: out of 170 bowling innings in the IPL, only on 23 occasions – one of them being tonight – have they bowled only four overs of spin or fewer. It’s also strange that none of those four overs tonight came from Ravindra Jadeja, presumably because there was a left-hand KKR batsman in at almost every stage before the slog overs tonight.Legspinner Karn Sharma, meanwhile, did a tight job. He didn’t bowl a single short ball according to ESPNcricinfo’s length data and finished with 4-0-25-2 despite an expensive first over. It was a terrific return for the legspinner who is big in trivia contests because of how many IPL titles he has won (three in three years with Sunrisers, Mumbai and CSK), without ever being a sure-shot pick for any of his teams. Our data suggests he bowled on off stump or wider for the most part against right-hand batsmen today, so he was rarely in the hitting zone for them.More impressively, left-handers had no hitting options against him either: he didn’t concede a single boundary to left-handers and also got two of them out.Getty ImagesWhy did KKR choose to bat?
They never do that. Well, not since May 2015 anyway. The last time was when Gautam Gambhir was still captain and Delhi were still the Daredevils. This season too, they’d bowled on both occasions after winning the toss. Perhaps when you have batsmen like Andre Russell, Eoin Morgan and Dinesh Karthik – who has been a decent finisher himself over time even if he’s not in the best of form at the moment – it is a tempting option to chase. But then the batting hadn’t quite fallen into place for them, in many ways. They were losing early wickets at the top and there hadn’t been consistently memorable performances from the big names mentioned above. They lost chasing in Sharjah in their previous game, so perhaps that factored into the decision to bat today. Or it could just be simply that they were following the tide – captains have started batting first with success in this tournament, and it happened again tonight. Why did Tripathi open, and was this the game to send Narine in at No. 4?
Rahul Tripathi took Narine’s opening spot, and it worked out nicely enough for everyone involved. Tripathi has three fifties in his last four innings as an IPL opener, so it was justified that he was pushed up. There were several perplexed voices around – Ben Stokes among them – when Narine came in ahead of Morgan at No. 4, but Narine did a decent job of it, making 17 off 9. That said, should it have been in this match that Narine lost the opening spot?

There isn’t elite pace in the CSK line-up, the kind that troubles Narine the batsman a great deal, so in many ways KKR were blunting their own attack. But his 17 off 9 is an innings KKR would accept from him no matter where he’s batting. He, a left-hand batsman, also ended up taking deliveries away from legspinner Karn Sharma, which was a bonus that KKR’s right-handers didn’t make use of later. Why did Russell bowl only at the death?
That is Andre Russell’s designated role this season. He’s bowled 42 of his 60 deliveries after the 16th over so far, and his death-overs economy rate of 8.57 and five wickets show that it’s a plan that’s coming off for KKR.They’ve tried various bowling strategies in the season already, including bowling six and seven bowlers. That depth in bowling is allowing them to bowl Pat Cummins out early on and attack top orders. And, so, it helps to have another seasoned fast bowler in Russell to take over at the death. When he came on today, CSK had been rattled by the loss of Dhoni, but still needed only 13 an over with Sam Curran, Kedar Jadhav, Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo available. Russell’s pace, direction and length – decidedly short, for all six balls of his first over – gave them no hitting oppportunity at all and effectively killed the game off as they got only three runs of that over.Russell said later that he had decided to go only cross-seam at the end, because he’d assessed that that was difficult to put away based on the delivery that got him out earlier. Intuition and perception of that kind – and the skills to build a plan around it – could mean we’ll see Russell don this role for a while yet, especially as KKR try to groom two young fast bowlers who they might not want to expose at the death.

Robin Smith, former England great, dies aged 62

Former England batter dies at home in Perth

ESPNcricinfo staff02-Dec-20252:30

Remembering Robin Smith

Robin Smith, the former England batter who went toe-to-toe with some of the greatest fast bowlers of the 1980s and 90s, has died at his home in Australia at the age of 62.Smith played 62 Tests between 1988 and 1996, scoring 4,236 runs at 43.67 with nine centuries, including three against West Indies – the team that so often brought out his pugnacious best.Smith’s signature shot was a front-foot square cut that was, by many estimations, one of the fiercest strokes in the world game, and it enabled him to thrive in cricket’s adrenalin-fuelled fast lane. This was especially true on England’s memorable tour of the Caribbean in 1990, when Smith was instrumental in England’s victory in the first Test in Jamaica, and again on home soil in consecutive 2-2 drawn series against West Indies in 1991 and 1995.At Edgbaston in 1993, Smith produced a remarkable innings of 167 not out in an ODI against Australia, a score which would remain England’s highest in the format for 23 years, until surpassed by Alex Hales in 2016.However, his perceived weakness against spin counted against him at key moments of his career, in particular with the emergence of Australia’s Shane Warne, whose success in his maiden Ashes tour in 1993 persuaded the selectors to omit Smith from England’s subsequent visit to Australia 18 months later.Ironically, Smith and Warne became lifelong friends – a relationship that was central to Warne’s decision to sign for Hampshire in the latter years of his career.Born in South Africa in 1963, Smith was brought up to be a professional cricketer, and would spend hours honing his technique in the bespoke cricket net that his father built at the family home in Durban, and in which Barry Richards and Mike Procter counted among his practice partners.Richards’ own connections with Hampshire had, in turn, persuaded the club to take a punt on his two young neighbours. Smith’s elder brother Chris would also go on to play for England after emigrating from South Africa in the early 1980s, but Robin’s debut – against West Indies at Headingley in 1988 – was the more eagerly anticipated of the two.Robin Smith on his way to 90 against West Indies at Lord’s, 1995•Getty Images

In a sign of things to come, his maiden innings comprised a century stand with his fellow South African import, Allan Lamb – another great player of West Indian fast bowling – only for England to collapse to a ten-wicket defeat at the hands of Curtly Ambrose, Malcolm Marshall and Courtney Walsh.Smith was still arguably in his pomp at the age of 32 when he played his final Test, against his former countrymen South Africa at Cape Town, at the end of a disappointing 1-0 series loss in January 1996. With England’s supremo, Ray Illingworth, keen to usher in a new generation, Smith was bracketed with England’s older guard and cast aside, despite boasting a batting average that – of the players with whom his career overlapped – only David Gower and Graham Thorpe could better.Post-career, Smith’s struggles with alcoholism were poignantly addressed in his 2019 autobiography, The Judge: More Than Just A Game. However, only last week, he attended the first Ashes Test in Perth, and spoke widely to the media about his ongoing recovery. He also attended an England Lions training session at Lilac Hill at the invitation of Andrew Flintoff.A statement from his family confirmed that Smith had died unexpectedly in his South Perth apartment on Monday, and that the cause of death is unknown.”Since his retirement from the game in 2004 [Robin’s] battles with alcohol and mental health have been well-documented but these should not form the basis of speculation about the cause of death which will be determined at postmortem investigation,” the statement added.”This is an immensely difficult period for us all whilst we try to come to terms with our bereavement, and we would therefore much appreciate consideration for our privacy by media and cricket followers alike.”ECB Chair Richard Thompson said: “Robin Smith was a player who stood toe to toe with some of the quickest bowlers in the world, meeting spells of hostile fast bowling with a defiant smile and an incredible resilience. He did so in a way that gave England fans enormous pride, and no shortage of entertainment.”He was a batter ahead of his time which was typified in that unforgettable unbeaten 167 from 163 balls in an ODI against Australia at Edgbaston in 1993.”His record at Hampshire is exemplary, and he’ll be remembered rightly as a great of Hampshire CCC. We’re desperately sad to learn of his passing, and the thoughts of all of us in cricket are with his friends, family and loved ones.”

BBC journalist shares Leeds "succession" update if Daniel Farke is sacked

Daniel Farke is battling to keep his job at Leeds United and a fresh update has now dropped regarding his future at Elland Road.

The Whites now sit 18th in the Premier League table, having lost five of their last six games in the competition, heaping the pressure on Farke with Leeds already linked with new managers such as Brendan Rodgers.

Former scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that 49ers Enterprises were even looking to make a change during the summer.

The Whites have a Premier League-experienced boss ready to come in at the expense of Farke.

BySean Markus Clifford Nov 24, 2025

Opinion is split amongst Leeds fans about Farke’s future and what the next steps should be, with Adam Pope providing insight on the situation this week.

Pope makes new claim about Farke succession plan

Speaking on the Don’t Go To Bed Just Yet podcast [via MOT Leeds News], Pope shared an update on Farke’s position at Leeds. While the BBC journalist stated the 49ers do not currently have someone “waiting in the wings”, he was then asked if they have someone they’re “looking at”, providing an intriguing response.

This now feels like a critical period for Farke, with Leeds’ results simply not good enough after some better ones earlier in the season, leading to them sliding into the relegation zone.

The German will know that improvements have to happen or 49ers will have to make a big decision, but unfortunately for him, next up is a trip to Manchester City on Saturday afternoon, which is nearly as tough as it gets.

Leeds United could finally dismiss Daniel Farke and replace him with their next Marcelo Bielsa.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 24, 2025

An ugly scoreline at the Etihad would crank up the pressure to new heights, and it would be a surprise if the Whites weren’t eyeing up potential replacements for Farke, with Rodgers perhaps the most likely given his status as a free agent with top flight experience.

Man City preparing £158m+ bid for star who wants to work under Guardiola

Manchester City are probing in the hunt for reinforcements and could now lodge a record bid for a star who is keen to work under Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

Coming back from the international break, the Citizens would’ve been keen to continue their recent winning form in the Premier League as Arsenal and Chelsea continue to push for title glory, though a defeat away to Newcastle United probably wasn’t in the script.

Despite having their fair share of openings, Manchester City couldn’t make them count and were punished by Harvey Barnes, leaving Guardiola’s men third in the table and seven points behind Mikel Arteta’s Gunners.

Of course, there is a long way to go before any prizes are handed out. However, Ruben Dias believes the Citizens will recover swiftly after their frustrating defeat, citing Newcastle’s excellent home record as a factor behind the result.

He told BBC Sport: “It was difficult in all ways for both teams. It was a very intense game and chances both sides. We had loads of chances and didn’t score more and we have to do better there. They scored theirs and we have to do better.

“Everyone knows how strong they are at home. First game after internationals is a tricky one and we fought as well as we could. It’s always a period of adaptation. We simply have to do better.”

In the face of a frustrating evening, Manchester City face a swift turnaround before clashes against Bayer Leverkusen and Leeds United this week, offering two chances for redemption after a rude introduction to life after the international break.

With the Premier League title race hotting up, Guardiola may now have an ace up his sleeve as the Citizens look to make up ground with their competitors at the top of English football.

Man City willing to submit record Desire Doue offer

According to reports in Spain, Manchester City are willing to submit a record offer for Desire Doue worth over £158 million and they see him as an ideal solution to provide pace and creativity within their forward line.

Intriguingly, the France international is keen to work with Guardiola due to his ability when developing talent, and contact has already been made with his representatives to try and open lanes to complete a deal.

Making a solid start to the campaign, Doue has registered three goals and three assists in eight appearances across all competitions, though his contract in Paris is set to run until 2029, meaning his current employers hold the cards in negotiations.

Man City are brewing their own homegrown Erling Haaland

Manchester City appear willing to smash their transfer record to land the man in question and are said to be in an encouraging position, though it remains to be seen whether they can edge themselves past Luis Enrique’s hardball stance to bring in another premium option in the wide areas.

Real Madrid and Super League launch €4.5bn lawsuits against UEFA as president Aleksander Ceferin told to 'approve' new competition after EU court ruling

UEFA is facing separate legal battles worth a total of €4.5 billion as Real Madrid and A22, the company behind the European Super League, are suing the governing body in the wake of a court ruling. A22 have also sent a letter to UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin, demanding the controversial project be given full approval.

The €4.5bn lawsuit

According to , the European Super League’s organisers and Madrid are launching separate lawsuits against UEFA, arguing that the organisation's actions caused substantial financial harm to the divisive project. Attempts to block the competition, which aims to challenge the Champions League by pitting the continent's strongest teams against each other, were dashed when the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) determined in 2023 that UEFA and FIFA acted unlawfully by blocking the creation of the Super League. Then, in October, the Provincial Court of Madrid dismissed appeals lodged by UEFA, La Liga, and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), upholding the earlier judgment.

In a new letter to UEFA, A22 warned of legal consequences should they refuse to adhere to that ruling and grant official approval within two months.

"Despite our substantial concessions, no agreement has been reached," it read. "Consequently, we hereby reiterate our request for UEFA's formal acknowledgement of our proposal (amended to reflect the negotiations mentioned above) as soon as possible and, in any event, no later than eight weeks from the date of this letter."

Meanwhile, Madrid president Florentino Perez confirmed at the Annual General Meeting that the club will file their own lawsuit, which will take the entire claims against UEFA to €4.5bn.

AdvertisementAFPThe new proposed format

The Super League was originally launched with 12 founding clubs as a closed competition, immediately sparking backlash across Europe. Following intense criticism and negotiations with UEFA, the organisers introduced several major reforms to reshape the project into a more open and competitive model. The revised format proposed expanding the competition to 36 clubs, divided into two groups of 18 in a “Super-Champions” style league, with the top teams advancing to the knockout stages. Governance reforms were also put forward, including a new board composed of participating clubs, UEFA or the European Football Council, and player representatives. Significantly, three player delegates would have voting power on crucial matters such as revenue distribution and competition format. A22 additionally suggested creating a unified digital platform called 'Unify' to stream free football content to fans worldwide.

Despite these amendments, UEFA ultimately rejected the proposals, sparking further action from Madrid and A22.

Madrid left alone in the fight

The Super League project, launched in 2021 by giants such as Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea, collapsed almost immediately under massive fan protests and strong pressure from football authorities. The English clubs withdrew within days, leaving Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus as the project's remaining supporters. Over time, however, Juventus and Barcelona’s stances shifted. With UEFA introducing a new Champions League format that promises higher revenues, improved competitiveness and several structural adjustments, the Italian side pulled out in June 2024, three years before the other teams withdrew, and Barcelona followed in October this year. The Catalan side's exit leaves their Clasico rivals as the last remaining team still publicly advocating for the Super League.

Southampton manager update now shared on Tonda Eckert and full-time move

A new Southampton manager update has been shared from St Mary’s regarding a full-time move for interim boss Tonda Eckert.

Eckert responds to permanent Southampton job rumours

The Saints made the perfect start to life without Will Still in the week, defeating Queens Park Rangers 2-1 at Loftus Road.

Eckert was the man in charge of Southampton following Still’s exit, with second half goals from Jay Robinson and Leo Scienza lifting them above rivals Portsmouth.

The 3-4-2-1 caretaker is once again set to be on the touchline this weekend prior to the international break as St Mary’s play host to bottom side Sheffield Wednesday. Talking ahead of the game, Eckert was asked if he fancied the Southampton job on a permanent basis, to which he said:

“Look, the answer is very easy on this one. My job is to prepare the game today in the best way possible. My job is to prepare the game on Saturday (8th November) in the best way possible. That’s what all my focus is on. It’s going to be three very important days until Saturday. Then we can all take a breath.

“I think the only thing I can do is give energy and give a structure, and prepare them in the best way possible. We’re going to do the same thing for Saturday and hopefully confirm [the improvement] and then we’ll go into a break and go again.”

Now, a new update has emerged regarding Southampton’s position over Eckert.

How Southampton feel about full-time Tonda Eckert move

According to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, Southampton now “consider Eckert a potential candidate for the full-time job” following his winning start in temporary charge.

The 32-year-old’s coaching career has mainly been as an assistant, helping some iconic names such as Patrick Vieira at Genoa and Miroslav Klose at Bayern Munich’s U17 side.

His experience in England came during 18 months as an assistant at Barnsley, with Eckert taking charge of Southampton’s U21s in the summer.

Saints gem Moses Sesay has been impressed under Eckert, saying he is an “experienced” coach who “demands a lot” in training and is “big on detail”.

“I’ve enjoyed working with him. I took some time to get a good connection with him, because he was new, but I really like him. He’s a good coach. He’s very experienced. He demands a lot from us in training, but I like that as a player. He knows what he wants, which is good.

“Comparing Calum McFarlane (former under-21s boss) with Tonda, I think Cal was maybe a little bit more technical, but there hasn’t been much of a difference.

“Tonda is big on detail. He’s a very good coach. We’ve had good results since he came in and went a few games unbeaten. It’s been good under him.”

Positive words indeed, and if Eckert makes it two from two on Saturday, his stock could continue to rise.

Scrimshaw, Pope spike Lancs guns as Northants maintain 100% start

Northamptonshire Steelbacks maintained their 100% start in this year’s Vitality Blast when they defeated Lancashire Lightning by 24 runs at Emirates Old Trafford to make it five wins in succession.Having posted 180 for 6, in which skipper David Willey top-scored with 37, the visitors produced a determined display in the field, George Scrimshaw leading the way with career-best T20 figures of 4 for 19 from his four overs, as Lancashire ended on 156 for 9.The prize wicket of Liam Livingstone, who was playing his first match after his IPL triumph, was claimed by Lloyd Pope who finished with 2 for 27. Having won their first three T20 games, Lancashire have now lost two on the trot, both at homeBoth the batters to depart in Lancashire’s powerplay were caught at mid-on off James Anderson, whose first three overs cost 21 runs. Matthew Breetzke was pouched by Chris Green for 9 and Ricardo Vasconcelos by Ashton Turner for a 15-ball 32.But the four fours and two sixes hit by Vasconcelos reflected the pace of scoring at the other end and the Steelbacks were 57 for 2 after six overs. Lancashire enjoyed another success two overs later when Justin Broad was caught behind off Jack Blatherwick for 13 which left the visitors on 70 for 3, leaving Willey and Ravi Bopara with the task of rebuilding the innings while maintaining an aggressive approach. The experienced duo managed this with a stand of 60 in seven overs before both were dismissed in the space of six balls. Having made 28, Bopara lofted Anderson to Blatherwick on the cover boundary and Willey was caught by Jennings at cover off Livingstone for 37.Undaunted by these reverses, Saif Zaib and Lewis McManus put on 42 in 24 balls before McManus fell to Livingstone in the final over for an enterprising 28. At the same time, the Steelbacks’ final total of 180 for 6 seemed about par on a good wicket.Livingstone finished with 2 for 35 from four overs although Luke Wells was also impressive, conceding 23 runs from his four wicketless overs. Anderson took 3 for 31 but, rather puzzlingly, the England slow-left-armer, Tom Hartley, was not required to bowl. The in-form Ben Sanderson and his captain, Willey, ensured Lancashire’s reply got off to a poor start by dismissing Wells and Keaton Jennings inside the first 13 balls of the innings and although Matty Hurst and Livingstone hit four sixes in seven balls, Northamptonshire struck another blow in the powerplay when Hurst skied Luke Procter’s first ball to long stop was caught for 17, Scrimshaw running across from third man to take the catch. The Australian legspinner Pope took the vital wicket of Livingstone in the next over when the IPL winner with Royal Challengers Bangalore pulled him straight to Vasconcelos at midwicket and departed for 18.Pope took his second wicket when he had Turner caught down the leg side by McManus for 23 and with seven overs left to be bowled Lancashire needed another 76 runs to win. That task immediately became harder when Green skied Scrimshaw to Willey on 15.Michael Jones tried to salvage the game but he fell to Scrimshaw for 32 when he was caught by Breetzke who took three catches in the innings and also dropped two. With the outcome of the game all but certain, the final few overs of the match were anti-climactic.
