  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Miami midfielder Redondo has repeatedly been blown away by fellow Argentine Messi since joining the club earlier this year. The 36-year-old has scored 12 goals and bagged 11 assists this season, something the former Argentinos Juniors ace has been hugely impressed by. On top of speaking about the Barcelona legend, the 21-year-old outlined his ambition to represent his country at the Paris Olympics this summer.

    WHAT FEDERICO REDONDO SAID

He told TNT Sports: "When you see Messi on television, you admire him a lot. But when you see him on a daily basis it's incredible: on the pitch he always has the solution. I have followed Sergio [Busquets] since I was a child. Something I admire about him is that he always makes the best decision, which in our position is always the most difficult."

On his Olympics dream, the Argentina under-23 international added: "I have my mind set here, but if I have to go to the Olympic Games it would be a huge pride. I always say that (the National Team) is the most beautiful place a player can be, representing his country."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi's move to Miami has done wonders for Major League Soccer. The division has experienced an economic boom since his arrival last summer and the veteran forward has helped them reach the top of the Eastern Conference standings in the early stages of the 2024 season. At present, Messi can do no wrong.

Phil Salt leads Sussex win with maiden ton, Matt Renshaw century in vain

Salt 137 not out as Sussex cruise to seven-wicket victory at Kent

Phil Salt played an extraordinary knock•Getty Images

Philip Salt’s maiden List A hundred powered unbeaten Sussex to a seven-wicket victory and inflicted a third straight Royal London Cup defeat on Kent at Beckenham.Spitfires, last summer’s beaten one-day finalists, underachieved with the bat on a decent pitch at the New County Ground and were blown away by the Sussex batting as Salt’s unbeaten 137 eased the Sharks to victory with 10 overs to spare. With a host of key players injured or unavailable, Kent were roundly out-played in all departments and now seem unlikely to qualify for the knock-out stages, although overseas recruit Matt Renshaw’s century was a highlight for the home side.Chasing 299 for victory, Sharks openers Luke Wright and Salt made a good head of steam in adding 44, including 22 in the only three overs of the game sent down by opening bowler Fred Klaassen. The Dutchman, who had earlier complained of feeling unwell, was replaced by Matt Milnes whose first delivery was skied to extra cover by Salt, only for Zak Crawley to spill a juggled chance at the third attempt.Darren Stevens struck with his first delivery of the 10th over, which Wright lofted to mid-off, bringing in Laurie Evans to get off the mark with two rasping cover drives to the ropes. Stevens later went off with a side strain.Salt straight drove Alex Blake for six to raise the Sussex hundred but Evans went for 46 after holing out to mid-off from a Milnes delivery.Harry Finch joined with Salt to take the game from Kent’s grasp, Finch marched to a 46-ball 50 while Salt posted his maiden List A century with seven fours and five sixes as the duo added 171 in 20 overs. Salt posted a 90-ball hundred before Finch fell for an eye-catching 89 from 68 balls with his side only seven runs short of the target.Batting first after acting skipper Adam Rouse won the toss, Kent openers Crawley and Sean Dickson added 60 before leg-spinner Will Beer struck with his second ball, snaring Crawley leg before on the back foot.Renshaw showed Beer scant regard with a back-foot drive for four and a six that sailed over long-on to hit a spectator flush on the head. As Renshaw changed his bat, so the unfortunate boundary-line supporter was taken to hospital for treatment to his gashed scalp. In Beer’s next over, Dickson was caught behind cutting, but Renshaw and Ollie Robinson regrouped by taking 17 off a Chris Jordan over as Renshaw cantered to a 48-ball 50, his first in Kent colours, with five fours and two sixes.Kent’s third-wicket partners raised the 200 by the 32nd over but Sharks’ left-arm seamer George Garton was rewarded for pegging back the run rate when Robinson turned a length ball to mid-wicket to depart four shy of his maiden List A 50 and end a partnership worth 121.Blake’s innings lasted seven balls before the impressive Garton plucked out middle stump with a yorker, then Garton had Rouse caught at mid-wicket off a mistimed pull to finish with three for 42.With four to his name, Stevens perished after a mid-pitch mix-up saw him run out by Briggs’s direct underarm hit from cover, yet Renshaw – despite struggling with back spasms and losing his timing – made it through to his century from 105 balls before departing lbw for 109 when aiming a reverse sweep against Briggs.Kent succumbed with two balls of the final over remaining.

Foreign players' comfort levels in Pakistan 'growing all the time' – David Richardson

The progress made by the PCB in bringing international teams and the PSL to Pakistan has ‘changed the perception’ of the country, the ICC CEO stressed

Umar Farooq in Karachi17-Mar-2019Over the last two years, Pakistan has made serious strides towards bringing big cricket back to the country. The PCB has successfully hosted various international teams over the last 20 months as well as business-end matches of the high-profile PSL. All this, according to ICC chief executive officer David Richardson, has “changed the perception” of Pakistan as a cricketing destination.International cricket in Pakistan came to an abrupt halt after the 2009 terror attack on Sri Lanka’s team bus in Lahore, with Pakistan’s national team forced to find a home away from home in the UAE. Since the visit of Zimbabwe in 2015, however, there has been a slow and steadily inflow of teams to the country.ALSO READ: Ehsan Mani hopeful of hosting all PSL 2020 matches in Pakistan”I think they’ve done a tremendous job and the level of comfort is growing all the time among the foreign players,” Richardson said during Sunday’s PSL final between Quetta Gladiators and Peshawar Zalmi in Karachi.”I know some security officials from Australia and other countries have come to see the matches here. Step by step, certainly, Pakistan is on the right path and I know that the PCB will be redoubling their efforts to encourage people and teams to come across and certainly it will be with the ICC’s support.”

The perception outside of Pakistan was that it was quite a dangerous place to visit in the past and that perception, slowly but surely, has been changed through the good work that has been done yetDAVID RICHARDSON

This season, Pakistan has hosted eight PSL matches including the final at Karachi’s National Stadium. Over 230,000 spectators attended the eight Karachi matches, making each nearly a full-house affair. The security arrangements for the teams were extraordinary, with the overseas players given presidential-level cover.”As you may be aware, the ICC has tried to support Pakistan in getting international cricket back to Pakistan on a more regular basis and I think everyone agrees that having the PSL matches in Pakistan and the final in Karachi is a great step forward in achieving that,” Richardson said. “So, well done to all involved, and thank you to the players who decided to make the trip across to Pakistan. I think you should also appreciate the work done by Pakistan as a country and Pakistan’s security forces.”Because the fact is that the perception outside of Pakistan was that it was quite a dangerous place to visit in the past and that perception, slowly but surely, has been changed through the good work that has been done yet. I think that point needs to be appreciated. The fact that so many foreign players agreed to come and play in Pakistan is indicative of that.”On Friday, Bangladesh’s tour of New Zealand was aborted following the terror attack on two mosques in Christchurch, which have so far claimed at least 50 lives. Some of Bangladesh’s players and staff narrowly escaped being caught up in the attack; they were on their way to one of the mosques for their Friday prayers when it was attacked. When asked if the incident made the ICC extra alert with the World Cup looming, Richardson said, “It has always been the case that we’ve had to make sure that we keep security absolutely priority, not only for the players but also for the visiting media, fans, spectators and everyone who attends the event. If you recall the Champions Trophy in England a couple of years back, there were a few incidents that happened.”So I don’t think security is anything new, obviously something happening in New Zealand probably took a lot of people by surprise and it emphasised the need not to be complacent, especially going into the World Cup. I know the work done already by the security director together with all the security agencies in the UK, they leaving no stone unturned, and if the threat level should rise in any way we will [further upgrade] the plans in place.”

Clement can ease Raskin blow by unleashing £22k-p/w Rangers star in new role

Rangers returned to winning ways over the weekend by easing to a 2-0 victory over St Mirren at Ibrox and the result was a pleasant way to end a difficult week.

The victory keeps them eight points behind Celtic in the Premiership, but they do have a game in hand coming up and if they could secure three points then, it would narrow the gap further.

Philippe Clement remains undefeated in charge of the club, yet successive 1-1 draws against Aberdeen and Aris Limassol appeared to halt the new manager bounce and the performances were disjointed in both games.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

Against the Paisley side, however, the Belgian rejigged his starting XI, and it resulted in a straightforward victory, with Todd Cantwell being utilised in his preferred attacking midfield slot.

Despite the win, it wasn’t all good news as the manager confirmed that Nico Raskin will all but miss the League Cup final against Aberdeen in two weeks due to injury.

The latest news on Nico Raskin's injury

The 22-year-old was stretchered off during the 2-1 win against Hearts at the end of October due to suffering an injury and the initial prognosis was he would be available after the international break.

Speaking to the media following the league clash on Sunday, Clement provided a fresh update on his recovery, and it isn’t good news for the Ibrox faithful.

He said: "Nico will have a new assessment next week because his rehab is not going well so I am not so happy about that but it is what it is. We have to find solutions."

The 49-year-old also said his chances of appearing against Aberdeen were “very small” and this is a blow for the Light Blues, who were hoping to return to full strength ahead of the game.

It remains to be seen whether he will play a part in any of the festive fixtures and Clement will need to adapt and utilise other players in the squad.

Nico Raskin Rangers career in numbers

The Light Blues managed to secure Raskin’s signature during the January transfer window having trailed him since the previous summer, and it looked as though he was going to be a shrewd piece of business by Michael Beale.

During his first six months, the Belgian played 16 matches for the club and despite arriving with over half the season already completed, Raskin still managed to rank third across the squad in tackles per game (1.8) while succeeding with a staggering 92% of his dribble attempts and completing 88% of his passes.

It was clear he had a bright future in the game and his embryonic spell in Glasgow certainly proved that he could emerge as a mainstay in the heart of the midfield.

So far during the 2023/24 campaign, Raskin tops the pile for tackles per game across the whole squad (2.8), while also ranking seventh for accurate passes per game (44.1) and for big chances created (two), showcasing his tenacious nature along with an impressive passing game.

His loss has been felt and while John Lundstram is a steady presence in the midfield, Clement must now try and get Ryan Jack and Jose Cifuentes up to speed as they are his likely choices of partner for the former Sheffield United midfielder.

There may be another option, however, as Tom Lawrence dropped slightly deeper against St Mirren at the weekend. Could the Welshman fill in for Raskin over the course of the next few weeks?

Tom Lawrence’s game vs St Mirren in numbers

The 29-year-old played the full 90 minutes and with every game, he is slowly returning to the type of form which led the Gers to sign him in the first place.

Lawrence was constantly looking to get involved against the Paisley side, taking 93 touches and when he had it, the midfielder made two key passes and succeeded with his only dribble attempt in what was a commanding performance.

Tom Lawrence

He did lose possession 18 times, but it was only due to his inclination to get forward on a regular basis and the former Derby County star chipped in defensively too.

The midfielder managed to win 50% of his ground duels along with making four tackles during the match and his performance may have given Clement something to think about going forward.

Tom Lawrence’s statistics this season for Rangers

Having missed practically the whole of last season due to suffering an injury in August 2022, Lawrence has shown wonderful resilience to not only recover but to force his way into Clement’s plans for the future.

The £22k-per-week maestro was recently hailed as “brilliant” by Rangers Review journalist Joshua Barrie, and he has impressed so far this season.

The Welshman not only ranks second across the squad for big chances created in the Premiership (three), but he also ranks fourth for key passes per game (1.7), fifth for successful dribbles per game (one) and shots on target per game (0.8), showing his effectiveness in an attacking sense.

He has often been utilised in his preferred attacking midfield role, hence the impressive statistics regarding big chances created, and key passes made, but the midfielder displayed on Sunday that even by dropping slightly deeper than normal, he still has the potential to cause plenty of problems for the opposition defence.

With Jack struggling with the odd injury niggles and Cifuentes not quite hitting the ground running, there is a space alongside Lundstram for Lawrence and if he takes it, there could be selection problems for the manager when Raskin returns.

The former Club Brugge boss will just need to be wary of Lawrence’s fitness as he hasn’t exactly played a lot of football and with a hectic fixture list coming up, managing his game time will be a key priority.

Against Hearts on Wednesday, however, Lawrence and Lundstram must be the two central midfield options that Clement goes with, as they can work in tandem to cause all sorts of problems for the Jambos.

Raskin being injured may be a blow for the Light Blues, yet in the 29-year-old, they have a more than capable replacement who has shown just how good he can be in recent weeks.

Poch must ditch Chelsea’s £80k-p/w dud who was worse than Colwill vs Spurs

Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur played out one of the craziest Premier League games of recent on Monday night as the Blues ran out as 4-1 winners, but that's only a snippet of the chaotic drama that unfolded.

There were ten yellow cards, two red cards and nine VAR checks across a pulsating 111 minutes of football as Spurs continued to play a high line with nine men and Mauricio Pochettino's side struggled to break them down.

Once Nicolas Jackson eventually broke through their depleted back line in the 75th minute, however, the floodgates opened and the Senegalese helped himself to a hat-trick.

Whilst the scoreline suggests the visitors were comfortable, they were anything but and if Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie hadn't been so recklessly sent off, the outcome of the contest could have been a lot different.

Jackson turned out to be the hero on the night, but there were a few notable villains in Blue.

Levi Colwill's performance against Tottenham

Pochettino chose to start Levi Colwill ahead of Marc Cucurella at left back in an attempt to deal with the dangerous Dejan Kulusevski.

Colwill was making his fifth appearance of the campaign in that position and he would endure a night to forget.

He played the role of a villain in Kulusevski's opener, affording the Swede too much space on the right channel, before allowing him to cut in on his left and hit a strike that deflected off his back and beyond the despairing Robert Sanchez.

That moment would foreshadow how the rest of his night would plan out as he was nearly sent off on the stroke of half-time following a heated exchange with Pape Matar Sarr.

The 20-year-old, who was given a yellow card for the clash, was then substituted at the break with Cucurella playing the second half at left-back.

Colwill let the occasion of a heated London derby get to him and when asked about his decision to substitute him at half-time, Pochettino said after the game:

"Yes, because I think after the yellow card he lose a little bit his focus and it is too much risk."

The former Brighton & Hove Albion loan star wasn't the only player who let the occasion get to him on the night, however, as Axel Disasi didn't have his best game in Blue.

Axel Disasi's statistics vs Tottenham

In the absence of Benoit Badiashile, who has now returned from a hamstring injury, Disasi has started in all but one Premier League fixture for Chelsea since arriving from Monaco in the summer.

He got the nod over his French compatriot against Spurs, however, on the evidence of his performance on Monday night, he could be at risk of being dropped for Badiashile or Pochettino could shuffle Colwill next to Thiago Silva and put Cucurella at left-back.

Once labelled as a "disaster" by talkSPORT pundit Andy Jacobs following his performance in the 3-1 defeat against West Ham United, Disasi didn't paint himself in a positive light once more against Spurs.

Awarded the lowest Sofascore rating (6.5) out of all the Chelsea starters, the £80k-per-week dud didn't look comfortable on the ball, costing his team in possession by losing it ten times and misplacing three of his six attempted long balls.

His rawness and lack of positional sense from a defensive standpoint were taken advantage of by Tottenham in the early stages and would have been exploited further if they weren't reduced to nine men.

The 25-year-old, who only made one tackle in a pulsating contest, has previously been criticised by William Gallas for not being at the required level in the Premier League.

The former Chelsea star said: "He has to improve a lot".

Following his display against Tottenham, Gallas was correct to make that statement, and he could face the axe from Pochettino's starting eleven if he doesn't step it up moving forward.

Josh Bohannon shines on debut but are lights set to go out on failed experiment?

The idea that people would be drawn to day-night Championship cricket hasn’t come to pass – at least at The Oval

Daniel Norcross at Kia Oval20-Aug-2018

ScorecardThere is a strong possibility, verging on likelihood, that The Oval is currently hosting the last ever day-night County Championship match.Surrey and Lancashire are the last two counties to endure the ordeal this season, and if reports from across the country are anything to go by, feedback on this experiment, which is into its second year, range from “what’s the point?” at the positive end of the spectrum to “this absurd farrago debases the integrity of the competition and drives away fans.”The final piece of the jigsaw was tested at The Oval today. Situated in the middle of the largest city in Europe, within 75 seconds gentle ambling distance of a tube station through which over 35,000 passengers a day pass between the hours of 5pm and 7pm, Surrey made entrance to their ground free after 6pm. Around two hours and 40 minutes play could be enjoyed in the atmospheric surroundings of this historic stadium without spending so much as a penny. Many a commuter, on their way to stations in South West London had the opportunity to watch that rarest of beasts; County Championship cricket on a work day, and to enjoy a short hop home after it was all done. The figures, though, don’t make great reading: 356 people turned up between 6pm and 7pm. Meanwhile, around 500 people left. Thereafter the crowd thinned out dramatically. The overall attendance of around 3,000 was pretty much par for a weekday. If there is no notable upside in attendance and large numbers of fans drift off hours before the close of play, for whose benefit is this experiment taking place? If it doesn’t work at The Oval, the most accessible ground in the country, it really can’t work anywhere else.Josh Bohannon, a 21-year-old Boltonian, making his debut for Lancashire may be the only person in favour of its continuation. With his side precariously placed overnight on 132 for 6, still 79 runs behind the league leaders, he batted for two and half hours and 108 balls to secure a maiden first-class half century. Conditions were at their best for batting, as the Kookaburra ball offers no assistance to bowlers during daylight and when it’s more than 20 overs old, but despite the lack of Jade Dernbach, who was absent owing to an injury sustained on day one, Surrey still possess in an attack of considerable potency.Bohannon was compact, assured and tidy, seldom offering a false shot. He took Lancashire into the lead. Surrey were beginning to get frustrated, but eventually Amar Virdi spun one back into his pads from round the wicket and Graham Onions fell shortly after. Nonetheless, a lead of 36 looked unlikely at the start of play.Surrey had wisely rushed through 34 overs in the morning session which ensured they would have fewer overs to face in the darkness. On the first day play finished at 9.20pm. Today it was, mercifully, all done and dusted by 8.46pm.The new pink ball poses exaggerated problems and Tom Bailey was a particular handful. For the most part though, Surrey’s top order negotiated it skilfully. Aaron Finch launched a brutal attack on the legspinner Matt Parkinson, twice hitting him into the second tier of the OCS stand before being undone by Onions for 32. Onions should have had the country’s leading scorer, Rory Burns, caught at slip for 44, but Steven Croft shelled the simple chance. Predictably his next ball was hammered for four.Into the evening, Joe Mennie’s hands were failing to make light work of Surrey but Burns would find himself raging, raging against the dying of the light when Bohannon was introduced into the attack as the crepuscular hour descended. Groping in the gloaming his off stump was plucked out of the ground to give the impressive youngster his maiden first-class wicket to go with that fifty earlier in the day. This left an awkward eight overs to get through before the close of play with the match on a knife-edge, but Sam Curran was more than equal to the task, stroking an elegant 27 off 27 balls while Ben Foakes stood firm at the other end.Closing on 197 for 4, Surrey have a lead of 161 with the promise of excellent batting conditions against a manky and unresponsive ball on the third afternoon and the chance to get at Lancashire in the evening session. It could be the last session under lights any of us get to see. If you’re one of those 35,000 people passing through Oval station tomorrow, it has to be worth it, if only to say “I was there.”

Arsenal could now step up interest in midfield “leader” wanted by Liverpool

Arsenal could increase their interest in signing Fluminense's Andre in January, but only on one condition, according to a fresh report.

What position does Andre play?

Andre is naturally a defensive midfielder who has worked his way up through his club’s various youth ranks to get promoted to the senior fold, and he’s so far made a total of 158 appearances across all age levels (Transfermarkt – Andre statistics).

The Brazil international still has another three years remaining on his deal at the Maracana Stadium (Fluminense contracts), but having firmly established himself as Fernando Diniz’s best-performing defensive player so far this season (WhoScored – Fluminense statistics), he’s been attracting interest from the Premier League.

This Is Anfield recently reported that the Gunners and Mikel Arteta are expected to compete against Liverpool for the signing of the 22-year-old, with the same outlet claiming that Edu has already visited his target’s training ground to make further assessments of his own.

Andre to Arsenal transfer update

According to Football Insider, who have shared a transfer update on Andre, Arsenal are willing to increase their pursuit of the talented prospect ahead of January, but only if they are able to sanction the sales of two of their own senior squad members first.

Arsenal could step up their interest in Fluminense midfielder Andre if they are able to move first-teamers on in January, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed the likes of Jorginho and Thomas Partey are the subject of interest and could move on in the mid-season window.

"Departures for either player could see Arsenal rival Liverpool for the signing of Andre – but exits will have to be sanctioned before Mikel Arteta’s side make their move.”

Fluminense midfielder Andre.

How good is Andre of Fluminense?

According to football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Andre is a “leader” for the way he dictates the play from the centre of the park, and he’s made an absolutely outstanding start to the new campaign, particularly in the defensive aspect of his game.

Sponsored by Nike, Diniz's £16k-per-week earner (Fluminense salaries) has won 33 out of his 46 tackles made so far this term, which is not only the highest number but also the best success rate throughout the whole of his squad (FBRef – Fluminense statistics). And that's not to mention his calmness and composure on the ball, as he's currently recording a 94.8% pass success rate.

In addition, Andre is a versatile operator having been deployed in five different positions over the pitch since the start of his career, including four roles in the middle and even as a centre-back, so his ability to adapt to the manager’s demands when it comes to altering formation or team selection is another attribute that would make him a fantastic acquisition for Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.
