  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mallorca have taken a dramatic step by stripping veteran midfielder Rodriguez of the captaincy and suspending him without pay after his public criticism of coach Arrasate. The fallout stems from Mallorca’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, where Rodriguez, 37, was left on the bench and not brought on as a substitute.

The midfielder vented his frustration on Instagram, questioning the coach’s decision to give minutes to new signing Jan Virgili, who had only just arrived at the club, ahead of long-serving players. Mallorca’s management, led by director of football Pablo Ortells, responded swiftly by announcing a suspension from employment and salary, as well as removing Rodriguez from his leadership role within the squad.

  • WHAT RODRIGUEZ SAID

Rodriguez’s frustration spilled out publicly across multiple Instagram posts, where he questioned the values behind Arrasate’s decision-making. In one of his first posts, he wrote: "It pains me that a player who just arrived, with just one training session, has the opportunity to play ahead of teammates who have spent years defending this jersey with sweat and dedication."

He continued by accusing the coach of undermining dressing room values: "Something like this sending a terrible message to the locker room: loyalty, hard work, or dedication don't matter."

Later, in a longer post that mixed personal disappointment with a message for his family, Rodriguez wrote: "I travelled with my children’s hopes of seeing their father play at the Bernabeu. An important lesson and piece of advice for them: Never expect anything from anyone, especially these days, when meritocracy, culture, and respect for hard work are so lacking. Don’t do things expecting something in return; do it for yourself and your passion."

He added: "People’s respect and affection are earned on the pitch. Sacrifice yourself for your dreams, even if they put obstacles in your way, and always believe in yourself. Things are earned, not given. And when you earn them, they taste twice as good. I love you, family. You’re the best." Despite the heartfelt tone, his remarks were seen by the club as crossing a line.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Rodriguez’s suspension sends a wider message about discipline and authority within the dressing room. For Mallorca, who are battling to maintain stability in La Liga, allowing a senior player to openly challenge the coach risked undermining team unity. The club’s decision to act decisively reflects its intent to reinforce Arrasate’s authority and protect the integrity of the dressing room.

For Rodriguez, a long-serving figure and fan favourite, this episode marks a painful fracture in his relationship with the club. At 37, and in the twilight of his career, the disciplinary measures could cast doubt over his immediate future and whether reconciliation is possible.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MALLORCA?

As things stand, Rodriguez is unavailable for selection, starting with their upcoming trip to Espanyol after the international break. The club must now manage the fallout within the squad, ensuring that Arrasate retains the dressing room’s confidence while addressing the absence of a senior leader. Whether Rodriguez will be reintegrated after his suspension or if this incident signals the beginning of the end of his Mallorca career remains uncertain.

A loucura estava no ataque.

As maiores chances vieram no segundo tempo.

O final daquela Copa a gente deixa pra lá, porque afinal, pouco importa…

Jaiswal and Dube go full-throttle as India seal series win

Scintillating half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube helped India beat Afghanistan by six wickets in the second T20I in Indore and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. This win also extended India’s unbeaten streak in bilateral T20I series at home to 15. The last time they lost a home T20I series was in 2019, when Australia beat them 2-0.After being sent in, Afghanistan rode on Gulbadin Naib’s 57 off 35 balls before India applied the brakes. But a late assault from Karim Janat and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who scored a combined 41 off 19, lifted the visitors to 172.During the chase, Fazalhaq Farooqi bowled Rohit Sharma for a first-ball duck. Rohit was out without scoring in the first T20I as well, where he was run out off his second ball. Virat Kohli, playing his first T20I since the 2022 T20 World Cup, also looked to attack right away. He was a lot more successful than his captain, scoring 29 off 16.The stars of the match, though, were Jaiswal and Dube. The two seemed to be competing against each other with the Afghanistan bowlers looking incidental. Jaiswal reached his fifty off 27 balls and Dube off just 22 as both tried to send every possible ball to the boundary. As a result, India chased down their target in just 15.4 overs.Axar Patel took 2 for 17 in his four overs•BCCI

Naib leads Afghanistan’s charge

Rahmanullah Gurbaz gave Afghanistan a quick start, hitting the first legal delivery of the first over for a four and the first one of the second for a six. But his stay was short-lived as he fell to Ravi Bishnoi for 14 off nine.No. 3 Naib ensured Afghanistan did not lose their momentum. He hit back-to-back fours off Mukesh Kumar before topping it with 6, 4, 4 off Bishnoi in the next over. He ended the powerplay with yet another boundary, taking Afghanistan to 58 for 2 after six.At the other end, Shivam Dube castled Azmatullah Omarzai with a back-of-the-hand slower ball. But Naib took a liking to him, hitting the medium-pacer for two sixes in his next over, the ninth. Between those two hits, he had a slice of luck as well, when Kohli, charging in from long-on, shelled a difficult low chance. Naib was on 41 then. He brought up his fifty shortly afterwards, off just 28 balls.

Axar applies the brakes

Axar Patel has looked a far more complete bowler since his return from the quadriceps strain that had ruled him out of the 2023 ODI World Cup. During the forced break, he worked on slowing down his pace and is now reaping the rewards.Introduced in the sixth over, he turned one past Ibrahim Zadran’s outside edge to hit the off stump. Then, in the 12th, he bowled one from well behind the popping crease, thus changing the length without a change in action, to have Naib caught at short midwicket. Bowling his four overs in a single spell, Axar finished with 2 for 17. Naib’s wicket put the brakes on the scoring rate – Afghanistan managed just 27 in five overs, from 12 to 16.

Afghanistan finish strongly

Najibullah Zadran was on 6 off 15 before he got stuck into Bishnoi. In the 17th over, he hit the legspinner for two sixes and a four. When he departed, Janat and Mujeeb took over and smashed Dube for 20 in the penultimate over of the innings. Despite Arshdeep Singh giving away only eight in the final over, which included four wickets (including two via run-outs), Afghanistan scored 55 in the last four.Virat Kohli marked his T20I comeback with an attractive cameo•BCCI

Rohit-Kohli watch

Rohit was run out in the first T20I when Shubman Gill did not respond to his call for a quick single. Tonight, in his 150th T20I, his early dismissal owed less to misfortune. Facing his first ball, he moved towards the leg side in an attempt to pull Farooqi. He missed and Farooqi hit the top of off stump.Kohli, who had missed the first game for personal reasons, opened his account by smashing Mujeeb over extra cover. In the same over, he swept a similar delivery to the deep midwicket fence. In all, he hit five fours in 16 balls. When he was caught at mid-off off Naveen-ul-Haq, the crowd was disappointed, but this might have been exactly the approach the team management wanted him to adopt.

The Jaiswal-Dube show

Jaiswal had kicked off India’s chase by cutting Farooqi to the point boundary. In the seamer’s next over, he hit a straight six before offering a return chance. Farooqi failed to hold onto it and then watched the next ball sailing over deep square leg for six more. Jaiswal was equally severe on Mujeeb, hitting him for a hat-trick of fours in the fifth over. At the end of the powerplay, India had raced to 69 for 2.Dube took some time to get going. He was on a run-a-ball 7 but soon he was outpacing Jaiswal. It started with him launching Noor Ahmad over long-off before he clobbered Mohammad Nabi for three successive sixes. After ten overs, India’s required rate had come down to 5.70.Jaiswal and Dube added 92 in just seven overs. By the time Jaiswal was out for 68 off 34, India needed only 19 off 45 balls. Jitesh Sharma fell for a second-ball duck before Dube, 63 not out off 32, and Rinku Singh took India over the line.

Club World Cup Team of the Tournament: Champions Chelsea dominate GOAL's best XI as two brilliant Brazilians with Stamford Bridge links also make the cut

Enzo Maresca's men pulled off a sensational upset by routing heavy favourites Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday's final in New Jersey

Everyone tuned in or turned up to watch Sunday's Club World Cup final fully expecting to see Paris Saint-Germain formally crowned the best team on the planet right now. However, Chelsea crashed the coronation party, with the Blues beating the reigning European champions 3-0 at a packed MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Cole Palmer was the undoubted star of the show, scoring two goals and creating another for Joao Pedro. The attacker's dynamic display resulted in him being presented with not only the man of the match award, but also the Golden Ball.

Unsurprisingly, Palmer also makes GOAL's team of the tournament but who else has been included? Chelsea may account for half of our picks but there's also room in our all-star selection for players from beaten finalists Paris Saint-Germain, surprise packages Fluminense and Palmeiras, and even Real Madrid…

    GK: Gigi Donnarumma (PSG)

It's still not clear if PSG will retain the services of Gigi Donnarumma for another season but, in our humble opinion, they'd be mad to let him go.

The Italian giant may not be amazing with the ball at his feet but he was utterly integral to their Champions League success and didn't really put a foot wrong in the U.S., keeping more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper (five).

    RB: Achraf Hakimi (PSG)

One of the most complete footballers in the game today, Achraf Hakimi is a joy to watch, a tremendous defender who is absolutely fantastic on the front foot.

The Morocco international is easily one of PSG's most important players, constantly winning the ball back and then using it to excellent effect, as illustrated by the fact that he was directly involved in four goals at the Club World Cup.

    CB: Thiago Silva (Fluminense)

Fluminense coach Renato Gaucho says Thiago Silva is still good enough to play for Brazil at the 2026 World Cup – and it's difficult to disagree based on the defender's performances over the past month.

The former Chelsea, PSG and AC Milan ace turns 41 in September but was absolutely outstanding during Flu's surprise run to the semi-finals. As Blues left-back Marc Cucurella said, "Thiago is a legend of football."

We're now seeing why Chelsea repeatedly fought so hard to keep hold of Levi Colwill, with the 22-year-old now blossoming into an accomplished centre-half.

The England international, who has the added advantage of being able to play at left-back, got better and better as the Club World Cup progressed and was outstanding in the final, coping majestically with PSG's stellar forward line and even releasing Cole Palmer for his second goal with a terrific ball to the right wing.

Rahul, Kohli guide India home after early scare on tricky track

Jadeja’s 3 for 28 restricted Australia to 199, but India’s pursuit of a modest target began with a historically bad start

Vithushan Ehantharajah08-Oct-20231:19

Tom Moody: Australia did not have a plan for that sort of pitch

The hosts and favourites for the 2023 World Cup are up and running. But as clinical as India’s six-wicket victory over Australia looks on paper, there was far more jeopardy out on the field in Chennai.Ravindra Jadeja’s exemplary 3 for 28 restricted Australia to 199, but the pursuit of a modest target began with a historically bad start. India were reduced to 2 for 3 – the first time in ODIs three of their top four were dismissed without scoring; Mitchell Starc removed Ishan Kishan for a first-ball duck before Josh Hazlewood’s double-wicket maiden snared captain Rohit Sharma lbw and Shreyas Iyer, caught tamely at short cover. But from the ruins rose Virat Kohli and KL Rahul – two of India’s “been there, done that” world-beaters. A stand of 165 turned a problematic start into a cakewalk of a finish. So much so that while Kohli fell for 85 – he was dropped on 12 – Rahul was able to manoeuvre himself into a position for an outside shot at ODI century number seven. With 91 to his name and five left to get, a four and a six would have taken him to three figures. Alas, too sweet a connection on a lofted drive off Pat Cummins cleared the boundary sponge at extra cover, finishing the match and leaving the keeper-batter dismayed on 97 not out.It was particularly chastening for Australia for the match to end in such one-sided circumstances. Cummins’ decision to be the first captain to win the toss and choose to bat at this World Cup looked optimistic, especially as the second innings wore on and the ball stopped talking.Halzewood’s 3 for 38 ended up being the only plus point in the second half. But one imagines most of the post-match debrief will centre around the inability to combat the turn and nous of Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and R Ashwin.Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Steven Smith with a ripper•Associated Press

India’s spin amigos shared six wickets between themselves, instigating an inescapable chokehold epitomised by the 16.5 overs worth of dot balls within their collective 30. The control assumed throughout the guts of Australia’s innings was primarily through Jadeja, who was introduced in the 20th. Australia had made a steady start before an eight-over-straight spell of 3 for 28 from the Chennai Super Kings stalwart on familiar conditions demolished those foundations.Despite losing opener Mitchell Marsh for a six-ball duck – edge found by Jasprit Bumrah, well-taken by Kohli tumbling to his left at first slip – David Warner was typically breezy, moving past 1000 ODI World Cup runs in just his 19th innings, setting a new benchmark for the feat having done so in one knock fewer than Sachin Tendulkar and AB de Villiers.A return catch for Kuldeep’s first of two dismissals ended his stay on 41, and a stand of 69 with Steven Smith, who himself made it to 46 before losing his off stump, beaten on the outside edge and losing his off stump. It was the first of three wickets to fall in the space of 10 Jadeja deliveries.Marnus Labuschagne was adjudged caught behind off a sweep, before the Alex Carey lasted just two deliveries before behind adjudged lbw in front of middle. Both batters took Australia’s two DRS reviews back to the dressing room.At 119 for 5, the onus fell on the last two remaining “full-time” batters Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green to conjure a partnership of note. Maxwell was able to strike Jadeja through extra cover for the first boundary in 73 deliveries, but an awry shot across the line to Kuldeep followed by Green’s lazy cut to backward point off Ashwin took the score from 140 for 5 to 140 for 7 in the space of four balls.Starc and Cummins were valiant in pursuit of late runs; the latter striking the first six of the innings midway through the 40th over (Kuldeep heaved over deep square leg) before the former bashed the second over the same region off Bumrah.Starc would be the last to fall, holing out into the leg side to bring the innings to a close with three balls to go. But within four balls of the restart, the left-arm quick had Kishan departing first ball, slashing to Green a first slip.Virat Kohli and KL Rahul piled up pressure on Pat Cummins and Co•AFP/Getty Images

Hazlewood followed with his double-hit in his opening over and, just like that, India’s task looked far from academic. But the fact there was only 197 to clear in 48 overs when Kohli and Rahul came together meant no undue risks needed to be taken. And yet, India should have been 19 for 4 when a top edge from Kohli on 12 – hurried by a skiddy bouncer from Hazlewood – fell through the hands of Marsh running in from square leg after some miscommunication with Carey behind the stumps. Kohli then survived an edge past his own stumps off Cummins on 13.Kohli was soon back into his work, supreme through midwicket for back-to-back fours off Green – the first just his second boundary in 50 deliveries. The pair exchanged strike regularly, until Rahul struck three fours – two fine of third, then a drive through cover – to take 13 off Adam Zampa’s opening over to jump-start his innings. That the legspinner was held back until the 17th over spoke of the loss of that early movement with the two new balls under lights, dissipating Australia’s incisiveness. By then, Starc had changed his angle to over the wicket to both right-handers, hoping to elicit either movement or a mistake off the straight.Kohli would win the race to the half-century, whipping a Cummins bumper off his nose to reach fifty for the 114th time in ODIs, off 75 balls. Soon after the century stand was reached, Rahul square drove his 72nd delivery for a 16th fifty in the format. ODI hundred number 48 looked odds on for Kohli, only to fall 15 short when pulling Hazlewood straight to Labuschagne at midwicket. His walk-off suggested a desire to take the side home, but with 33 required off 74, the finish line was in full view. And so came the sprint finish. Pandya charged Hazlewood to muller him over wide long off for India’s first six of the tournament. Rahul then followed with the second in the next over, planting Maxwell into the stands down the ground.Perhaps a century for Rahul would have been the neatest of bows on a professional opening win. As far as consolations go, sizeable red ink and victory by 52 deliveries should more than make up for it.

Chelsea now racing to sign £75m star who scored Stamford Bridge wonder goal

Chelsea are involved in a three-way transfer race for a “sensational” forward who is now set to cost £75m this summer, according to a report.

Blues set for attacking reshuffle

With Noni Madueke looking increasingly likely to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer window, amid interest from Aston Villa and Newcastle United, some additional reinforcements may be needed in wide areas, and a new target has entered the frame.

The Blues have now submitted a £29m offer for Atletico Madrid winger Giuliano Simeone, who has been a “revelation” in La Liga this season, which means the Spanish are taking their time to assess the bid.

A dream target for Enzo Maresca is Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams, with the west Londoners now beginning to lay the groundwork for a potential deal, having recently made fresh contact over a summer move.

Maresca has set his sights on a number of targets from Spain, but there have also been suggestions a player from much closer to home could be on his way to Stamford Bridge.

According to a report from The Sun, Chelsea are now eyeing a move for AFC Bournemouth Antoine Semenyo, but they are not the only Premier League club in the race for the forward’s signature, with rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool also in the picture.

AFC Bournemouth's AntoineSemenyolooks on

Semenyo has emerged as a key player for Bournemouth this season, and given that he has played a major role in the Cherries’ push for Europe, they are hesitant to green light a sale this summer, although they would be willing to listen to big offers.

Bournemouth have now set an asking price of £75m in a bid to ward off the interest from elsewhere, which they believe is fair given the vast sums of money that have been spent on players like Mykhailo Mudryk and Antony.

Chelsea fans will know all about "sensational" Semenyo

The Ghanaian is enjoying an impressive campaign, picking up nine goals and six assists in 33 matches in all competitions, and perhaps his finest moment came at Stamford Bridge, netting a wonder goal in the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge in January.

Lauded as “sensational” by members of the media, the Bournemouth star has managed to kick on in his second full season in the Premier League, having already eclipsed the number of goal contributions he managed to record in the 2023-24 campaign.

That said, a £75m asking price seems far too high for a player who hasn’t long proven themselves at the top level, with the 25-year-old yet to make an appearance in a European competition.

If Bournemouth are willing to drop their asking price, there is every indication Semenyo could be a worthwhile signing, but a fee of £75m should be reserved for players in the world-class category, and the Ghana international is not there just yet,
