Southampton: BBC journalist gutted by Walker-Peters ‘blow’

Southampton correspondent Adam Blackmore of BBC Radio Solent has reacted to ‘another injury blow’ involving defender Kyle Walker-Peters.

The Lowdown: Hasenhuttl under pressure…

The Saints have started the 2022/23 Premier League campaign in fairly lacklustre fashion, having won just three out of their opening 11 league matches, with only Leicester City and Nottingham Forest conceding more goals among the division’s bottom seven.

Winning just once in their last six, a solid 1-0 victory away to in-form Bournemouth, Ralph Hasenhuttl has perhaps been handed a degree of hope from that game that Southampton can turn things around.

However, the Austrian is not helped by consistent injury issues. Valentino Livramento, Romeo Lavia and Armel Bella-Kotchap have all been sidelined recently, and if the south coast side are to mount a strong mid-season run, every available player will need to be in contention to feature.

The Latest: Blackmore gutted by Walker-Peters ‘blow’…

Southampton have been dealt another blow with Walker-Peters out for the foreseeable future, with BBC reporter Blackmore giving his verdict.

He says that a ‘tough test’ against league leaders Arsenal today ‘just got tougher’ after the injury to the English right-back.

The journalist tweeted on Friday: “Another injury blow for #SaintsFc this morning with Kyle Walker-Peters suffering a hamstring injury, Ralph just confirmed. So that’s KWP, ABK, Lavia and Tino out – and AMN not available against Arsenal. A tough gig Sunday just got tougher.”

The Verdict: Major setback for Saints…

Walker-Peters is an absolutely crucial player for Hasenhuttl, having started every league match for Southampton this season whilst also completing their second-highest rate of successful take-ons per 90 (WhoScored).

The former Tottenham starlet will be a sore miss at full-back, and it will be interesting to see how the Saints shore up their right flank without his presence this afternoon.

It’s going to take some adjustment from the manager, given that he doesn’t have any natural right-backs available, or even anyone who could classify it as a backup position.

Celtic receive positive double injury news

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has provided an update regarding the fitness of both Liel Abada and Jota following last night’s Champions League defeat at Parkhead.

What’s the word?

That 2-0 loss to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig – which subsequently ended the Hoops’ hopes of progression – saw Abada forced off just before the break with an injury issue, while teammate Jota missed the match entirely having been absent from training on Monday.

The title-winning coach has offered positive news regarding the pair, however, suggesting that those complaints are not likely to prove too disruptive, with both men still in with a chance of featuring against Hibernian at the weekend.

Speaking after Tuesday’s frustrating loss, as per the Scotsman, the 57-year-old stated: “Jota is still a bit sore today. He needs a bit of investigation. It’s nothing serious. It may still keep him out of the weekend but we will see how it goes.”

Before adding regarding the Israel international: “I think it’s nothing too serious. A dead leg, muscle injury. We have an extra day to recover before Saturday so he may still be involved.”

Big lift

Following the disappointment of that defeat to Marco Rose’s side, it will seemingly be a major lift to Celtic that the attacking duo are not set to face an extended period on the sidelines, with the Old Firm outfit having already been hampered by the loss of captain Callum McGregor and defender Carl Starfelt.

The return of Jota, in particular, would be a timely boost for the Scottish champions with the club having no doubt missed the Portuguese starlet’s creative flair and clinical nature in attack, as the hosts spurned a number of chances against their German opponents.

The 23-year-old had got himself on the scoresheet away in Saxony a week ago, with his total tally for the season now standing at ten goal contributions in all competitions, with that the best record of any player in the Bhoys squad.

The former Benfica man – who was snapped up on a permanent deal this summer – has emerged as a leading presence at Celtic Park over the past year or so, with pundit Frank McAvennie dubbing him “the best” player in Scotland when on form, as he “causes so many problems” for the opposition.

Abada too has shown his worth since his arrival a year ago, with the 21-year-old having scored six goals in just nine Scottish Premiership games already this season, after previously scoring 15 goals and registering 11 assists across all fronts last term.

Being able to welcome back the “wonderful” talent – as dubbed by McAvennie – as well as his fleet-footed teammate will be a notable boost for Postecoglou and co, with the club having little time to dwell on this fresh disappointment amid what is a hectic run of fixtures.

Manchester United: Harry Maguire suffers thigh muscle injury

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire looks set to be unavailable for selection this weekend against Manchester City due to a muscle injury.

The Lowdown: England display

Maguire began the campaign as first choice under Erik ten Hag, however, he fell out of favour after back-to-back opening league defeats against Brighton and Brentford and hasn’t started a Premier League fixture since.

The 29-year-old was backed by Gareth Southgate though and played every minute against Italy and Germany in the UEFA Nations League, conceding a penalty against the latter of the two countries.

Southgate and Maguire reportedly had a private chat at Wembley following a disappointing performance against Germany, and it looks as if things have gone from bad to worse for the centre-back.

The Latest: Thigh problem

The Sun shared a story on Tuesday evening regarding Maguire, claiming that he is set to be out of action for two weeks through injury.

The defender suffered a thigh muscle injury but played through the pain, however, that has resulted in the player being sidelined for the immediate future.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-updates-7/” title=”Latest Man Utd updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Not ideal

You’d expect that Maguire wouldn’t have started at the Etihad on Sunday anyway, however, knowing he is out through injury isn’t exactly good news for Ten Hag.

The Red Devils have a whopping nine fixtures in October so may need to call upon Maguire at some point to provide cover to Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez. However, it seems as if United won’t have their club captain fit for a while, starting this Sunday.

Newcastle: Bruce had a howler on Giroud

Newcastle United have endured a number of transfer blunders over the years, with one notable example having been the failure to land prolific Frenchman, Olivier Giroud, during Steve Bruce’s time at the helm.

The former Arsenal man has been a constant nuisance for the Magpies over the years, particularly for former captain Fabricio Coloccini who felt his wrath in 2014, with the French forward scoring nine goals and laying on two assists in just 14 games against the northeast side in his career thus far, with it having been no surprise to see the club finally look to end that run by bringing him to St James’ Park.

Reports back in January 2020 suggested that the Tynesiders were looking to secure a loan move for the then-Chelsea striker, with the 6 foot 4 menace having fallen down the pecking order under Frank Lampard.

As it proved, however, the one-time Montpellier man ultimately rejected the chance to make the switch to Newcastle, with there no doubt a sense of frustration that both Bruce – and former owner Mike Ashley – were unable to tempt the striker into the switch.

Although the 114-cap genius was already well into his 30s at the time, he has proven since then that he is no fading force, with the Premier League side left to rue their inability to land the “dangerous” asset – as dubbed by Senegal defender, Kalidou Koulibaly.

The veteran ace would go on to finish his spell at Stamford Bridge last summer with a respectable tally of 39 goals and 14 assists in 119 games in all competitions, having previously scored 105 goals and contributed 41 assists in 253 games with the Gunners.

A proven asset in English football, the World Cup winner has since gone on to thrive for Italian side AC Milan over the past year or so, with 24 goal contributions in just 48 games to date, at a rate of one goal or assist every two games.

At 36, the £75k-per-week menace remains a hugely integral figure for both club and country, having only recently netted his 49th goal for France against Austria, ensuring he is now only behind the great Thierry Henry (51) on Les Bleus’ all-time scorer’s list.

A truly clinical presence in front of goal – as his record of 240 club career goals illustrates – Giroud is also a joy to watch as a result of his majestic quality, routinely producing something spectacular in an almost effortless manner.

That unique talent was on show earlier this season, as he netted an acrobatic volley in the Serie A side’s triumph over Bologna, proving that he can still make the difference – and in style – despite his advancing years.

While current Newcastle boss Eddie Howe now has Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson at his disposal in the forward ranks, he may well have loved to have had a pure poacher such as the Milan ace to call upon, had his predecessor been able to get a deal over the line.

Campbell reacts to possible Kent contract

Sky Sports pundit Kevin Campbell has given his reaction to some news that he has heard involving Glasgow Rangers winger Ryan Kent.

The Lowdown: Contract talks

As cited by Football Scotland, Giovanni van Bronckhorst revealed that the 25-year-old is in talks with the Premiership club over a new contract at Ibrox.

The winger has been linked with a move to the Premier League, namely the likes of Wolves and Aston Villa, so he has been offered a new deal by the Gers in order to try and fend off that interest from England.

The Latest: Campbell reacts

Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell has claimed that it ‘would be great’ for Rangers if they can tie down Kent to a new deal, adding that he is a ‘vital’ player for the Light Blues.

The former Arsenal striker said: “I don’t think Kent needs a buyout clause in his contract, if I’m honest.

“If a Premier League club comes in for him, they will put the money down. Rangers would, of course, have to accept a bid but I doubt they would ask for an astronomical amount.

“Kent has been coveted by a few Premier League teams and understandably so. He has been brilliant for Rangers over the past few seasons.

“If they could tie him down to a new deal it would be great. It would protect the club.

“They want to regain the title. Kent will be vital for them if they are to do it. It will be interesting to see how it plays out.”

The Verdict: Get it done

As Campbell referenced, Kent is such a key player for the Light Blues, so they need to get him to sign a new contract as soon as possible.

He ranked as their sixth-best performer in the Premiership last season, scoring two goals and supplying eight assists in 26 games, while he also ranked highly among his team-mates in terms of shots, key passes and dribbles per match (WhoScored).

Also, given that Joe Aribo has already made the move to the Premier League with Southampton this summer, Rangers will not want to lose another of their most important players to the English top flight in the same transfer window.

Kamara could still leave Rangers

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Glen Kamara could still leave Glasgow Rangers before the transfer window closes.

The Lowdown: In demand

The Finland midfielder is a man in demand this window, with multiple clubs seemingly in pursuit of the 26-year-old.

The likes of Aston Villa, Galatasary and Nottingham Forest all reportedly interested in his signature.

The Ibrox club have already sold Joe Aribo to Southampton and Calvin Bassey to Ajax this summer, so they could also let Kamara leave for the right price.

The Latest: Kamara to leave Rangers?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke has claimed that there could be a ‘late twist’ with regards to Kamara’s future, adding that a move away from Rangers before the end of the window should not be ruled out.

The journalist stated: “I think there could still be a late twist. There’s been quite a few clubs interested in Glen Kamara from the Premier League and from abroad as well. So you can never rule out a possible move. We’ve still got plenty of time left in this transfer window as well and, I think for Rangers’ sake, if it’s an offer they can’t turn down they would have to maybe let Kamara move on.”

The Verdict: Keep him!

After losing Aribo and Bassey, the Gers simply cannot afford to lose another key player in Kamara in the same transfer window.

Once hailed as a ‘Rolls Royce’ by his former manager Steven Gerrard, the Finland international racked up a mammoth 52 appearances in total over all competitions last term, scoring four goals and supplying a further five assists from the middle of the park (Transfermarkt).

He has already played (and started) in two of Rangers’ three matches so far this term, showing that Giovanni van Bronckhorst considers him an important player, so the Light Blues must avoid selling him if possible.

Spurs: Romano drops Jesse Lingard update

Fabrizio Romano has dropped an update on reported Tottenham Hotspur transfer target Jesse Lingard.

What’s the talk?

In a recent post on Twitter, the Italian journalist revealed that, despite a number of reports linking Fabio Paratici with a move for the former Manchester United forward this summer, at present Spurs have not made an offer to the 29-year-old free agent.

In his tweet, Romano said: “No proposal on the table from Spurs to Jesse Lingard, as things stand.”

Supporters will be gutted

While it is true that Lingard had fallen down the pecking order at United prior to his departure from Old Trafford last month – starting just two Premier League matches in 2021/22 – the former England international nevertheless proved that he still has what it takes to be a key player for a top-six team during a loan spell at West Ham United in 2021.

Indeed, over his 16 Premier League appearances for the Hammers in the season before last, the £16.2m-rated talent was in breathtaking form for the Irons. He scored nine goals, provided five assists and created three big chances for his team-mates, along with taking 2.6 shots, making 1.1 key passes and completing 1.1 dribbles per game.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, transfer rumours and more!”]

These returns saw the £75k-per-week attacking midfielder average a remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.19, ranking him as David Moyes’ best player in the top flight in 2020/21 as he played an influential role in the Hammers sealing a sixth-place finish in the league that year, one ahead of Spurs in seventh.

As such, it is clear to see that, when given the opportunity, Lingard still has the ability to be a fantastic weapon in a top-six manager’s attacking arsenal.

Therefore, we believe that Romano’s suggestion that Spurs are yet to make a move for the 29-year-old is sure to have left the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful gutted.

Man Utd looking to axe Bailly and Tuanzebe

Manchester United will seemingly be looking to get rid of two of their defenders during the upcoming summer transfer window.

What’s the news?

Journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano shared on Twitter that there has been a “decision made” regarding the future of Eric Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe, with both players “set to leave” Old Trafford this summer.

Signed from Villarreal six years ago this week in a deal worth a reported £30m, Bailly has gone on to make 113 appearances for the Red Devils. However, with a worrying injury record and only seven appearances in all competitions this season, it’s easy to see why the club are looking to offload the Ivorian this summer.

The 28-year-old has largely failed to convince in a United shirt, being branded “rash” by Trevor Sinclair after a hapless own goal in the Manchester derby last November.

As for Tuanzebe, despite playing for two different clubs on loan this season, the 24-year-old failed to make an impact with either, as he made just two appearances for Napoli after he left Aston Villa in January.

After the first of those, Italian journalist Umberto Chiariello criticised the Old Trafford academy graduate for committing “mistakes that a defender should never make”.

Taking all this into account, it’s easy to see why the club are looking to move the defensive duo out of the club and off their books permanently.

Great news for United fans

This should be music to the ears of United fans everywhere and give them hope that the club are looking to move some deadwood out of Old Trafford and potentially bring in some new players to replace them.

Taking into account how the likes of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani and Juan Mata will not be at the club next season, this already suggests that the Red Devils will need to be rather busy to ensure that their squad is strong enough before the next campaign kicks off in two months’ time.

It’s safe to suggest that both Bailly and Tuanzebe won’t be greatly missed at the club based on what they’ve offered on the pitch, but should the pair find themselves waving goodbye to Old Trafford once and for all this summer, the pressure will then be on the club’s hierarchy to ensure that they find suitable replacements so that Erik ten Hag isn’t left short of central defensive cover over the next few months.

In other news: Bid made: Man Utd now in talks for “spectacular” signing, supporters will be buzzing

Everton plotting bid for Memphis Depay

Frank Lampard is reportedly plotting a move for Barcelona star Memphis Depay in order to bolster Everton’s attacking options ahead of next season.

What’s the word?

According to reports from Spanish outlet Sport, the Toffees are among the clubs who are interested in the 28-year-old, with Arsenal and Newcastle United also keen on securing the services of the Dutchman.

His contract expires at the end of next season, and Lampard could be tempted to lure him to Everton as part of a possible summer rebuild.

However, valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt and with a wage of £158k-p/w, Depay won’t come cheap.

Depay would be a great coup for Everton

Everton narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League with a stunning 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace on Thursday, but Lampard won’t want to be in that position again, and his squad could be in need of an overhaul during the summer.

Signing Depay would be a solid piece of business, with his first season in Spain seeing him score 13 goals in 37 appearances despite Barcelona experiencing some considerable struggles during the campaign.

With Richarlison (11) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (five) struggling for goals this season in comparison to 2020/21, it’s clear that a new centre-forward is needed to improve the Toffees’ attack for next term.

Over the course of the 2021/22 season, Depay has generated more shot-creating actions (76) in La Liga than both Richarlison (62) and Calvert-Lewin (26) in the English top flight. The Dutchman is also effective from wide areas, putting in 61 crosses, with the Everton duo only managing 31 between them.

This vast skill set would no doubt please Lampard, and with former Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman describing Depay as a “joy to watch”, Everton could do a lot worse than bringing the former Manchester United forward back to the Premier League.

Here's a massively premature review of the 2019 World Cup

Because, you know, why not

Andrew Fidel Fernando01-Jul-2019The league stage still has several days to go, so perhaps it would make logical sense to save this review of the World Cup for after the tournament ends. Only, we don’t much care for logic around here. So here’s the Briefing’s massively premature review of the World Cup.

South Africa

Motto: “We didn’t choke, though, did we?”Didn’t they, though? It wasn’t the dramatic, all-consuming, monster choke we have come to expect from South Africa. But in the high-pressure matches against Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and New Zealand, there were definite moments in which they cracked, producing match-defining errors. It was as if their traditional mega choke was chopped up into tiny bits and thrown over the whole of their campaign, like so much choke confetti. Many expected them to only start screwing up towards the end of the tournament, but in becoming the first team to be properly knocked out, South Africa can also be said to have choked at choking.High point: Pics of a shirtless Faf du Plessis from warm-up games of football. Dude is chiselled. He wants you to know.
Low point: Ex-boyfriend AB de Villiers sending that late “U up?” text to South Africa’s selectors the night before the selectors were due to make a serious commitment to another player.

Afghanistan

Motto: “Gulbadin’s Gulbadins”Gulbadin Naib bowls. Gulbadin bats. Gulbadin fields. Gulbadin captains. Gulbadin is love. Gulbadin is life. He’s opening the batting in a World Cup despite barely having batted there before. He’s bowling crucial overs although he is at best the fifth bowler in the side. He’s taking batting reviews despite clearly having nicked the ball to the keepers. He’s using up bowling reviews despite the fact that people looking in the general direction of the stadium for hundreds of kilometres around know it’s not out.Gulbadin is supposed to merely be the head of this team. The pilot of the aircraft, so to speak. But he has also made himself co-pilot, walks up and down the aisles with food and beverages, makes every one of the announcements, and comes out and flexes his muscles at the front of the cabin for the passengers’ entertainment.High point: Almost beating Pakistan.
Low point: Almost beating Pakistan.

Australia

Motto: “Excellence junkies”Why are you doing this? Please stop. Pakistan and Sri Lanka still mythologise 1992 and 1996. The 1983 win held a special place in Indian hearts for 28 years. You’ve won so many World Cups, you don’t actually even care about them anymore. In two months’ time, when the Ashes are in full swing, no one will remember whether you won it or not. Take it easy for once. You’re supposed to be just coming out of a year of turmoil, for crying out loud.High point: The Mitchell Starc yorker that practically phased through alternative dimensions before making an eruption of Ben Stokes’ stumps.
Low point: Steve Smith having to pretend he was grateful to Virat Kohli for stopping the ball-tampering taunts, when in reality, Smith does not seem to care in any way.

Sri Lanka

Motto: “The World Cup savers”Abysmal pretty much right through the tournament, except for that one game in which they beat England, doing the World Cup league stage a massive favour, as it helped ensure other teams were in contention for a semi-final spot. Give these terrible fellows a medal.High point: Lasith Malinga’s belly wobbling rhythmically to the music in the stands at Headingley, on that magical England-beating afternoon.
Low point: A middle order that bats so slowly, the scoreboard goes into reverse.

Bangladesh

Motto: “Trying to remind you that Shakib exists”For parts of the English media and some commentators, no cricket takes place in the world when England is not playing. So imagine their surprise when Shakib Al Hasan, who has been the top-ranked ODI allrounder since pretty much the Triassic period, has started to carve this World Cup up. Seeing Shakib at the top of the ODI run charts has prompted serious amazement. It’s like this guy, who has been Bangladesh’s talisman for over a decade, has only now popped out of the ground.High point: The loudest fans in the tournament.
Low point: The loss to India. It hasn’t happened yet. But we pretty much all know it will.

Pakistan

Motto: “Team time machine”You’ve heard all the ways that this campaign is similar to Pakistan’s run to the trophy in 1992. Yet in some ways, this 2019 campaign seems even more insane, because Pakistan had a genuinely woeful record in the months leading into the tournament; they weren’t quite so bad in 1992.They beat England, eased past New Zealand, then nearly threw it all away against Afghanistan. What crazy, fateful route will they take from here on in? My bet is that they lose to Bangladesh, and are seemingly knocked out, but the moment they land in Pakistan, they are informed two teams have been disqualified for doping, let’s say, and they immediately return and win the tournament.High point: They haven’t got there yet.
Low point: This also, they probably haven’t got to yet.

West Indies

Motto: “Falling heroically short”Through the course of the tournament, West Indies have perfected the art of getting into good positions, then swiftly getting out of them. They had Australia at 79 for 5, then 147 for 6, before letting them surge to 288. They seemed to have the measure of that chase at 190 for 4, before going on to lose by 15 runs. They needed just one more Carlos Brathwaite six to win the match against New Zealand, but he holed out at last gasp.Sri Lanka were mostly awful, but their mascot game was strong•IDI via Getty ImagesThey also made 321 against Bangladesh, but lost that because of the batting of this new, unheard of guy called Shakib.Andre Russell limped his way through much of this, trying to convince people he was not injured, even though at times he looked like he needed one of those walking aids for seniors.High point: Thrashing Pakistan first up.
Low point: Everything else.

New Zealand

Motto: “Rapidly deflating”Real talk, New Zealand. You’re the only team from outside the Big Three with a near certain chance of getting into those semis. You’ve won your public over with three years of consistently good cricket. You’ve won the rest of the world over with your toothy smiles and your kindly tweets and your tender bum pats and your Nobel Prize-level cricketing niceness. Don’t do what you always do. Don’t mess it up from here.High point: Kane Williamson and Jimmy Neesham’s batting.

Low point: Everyone else’s batting.

India

Motto: “We need to talk about… that former captain”India have been so good, they should be in the final on July 14. But do we need to talk about the performance of that one great player who is just maybe, just possibly, past producing the innings we love him for having once produced? Can we talk about how many balls he soaks up before he starts rotating the strike and scoring properly? The momentum he is sapping from most India innings? No? Okay.High point: Jasprit Bumrah. He has been the best bowler at this World Cup without even having to take wickets. Kind of a hard thing to do.

Low point: Given the way he been finishing innings like he used to, it’s more like MS Phoney. Amirite?

England

Motto: “Flatophiles”England are deservedly the No. 1 ODI cricket team in the universe, in the sense that almost all planets in existence do not have living things, and England are amazing in conditions that are completely lifeless.High point: Finally getting a pitch to their liking, at Edgbaston against India.
Low point: Coming across any surface that has seam movement, spin, slowness, undue fastness, undue bounce, reverse swing potential, or slower-ball envenomation…
