Burnley boss Kompany now lining up "amazing" Che Adams in cut-price swoop

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany will be aware that his side need to improve if they have designs on avoiding relegation from the Premier League and the Belgian has now lined up a cut-price January swoop at Turf Moor, one he believes could transform their season.

Burnley's Premier League struggles continue

Despite winning the Championship at a canter last year, Burnley always knew that the Premier League would be an uphill battle to regularly gain results in and that has proved to be the case, with Kompany's men second-bottom of the divisional standings and just above Sheffield United on goal difference.

Last week, their 2-0 defeat at home to Everton made it 13 league defeats in 17 fixtures so far for the Clarets. Their only two victories this campaign have come against Luton Town and Sheffield United. At the same time, draws against Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion have offered some brief respite in a gruelling campaign for all involved at the club.

Burnley line up January offer to sign powerful new player

He’s not in the first-team picture at his current club…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 17, 2023

Delivering his post-match analysis after his side's defeat to Sean Dyche's Toffees last Saturday, Burnley manager Kompany lamented his players' inability to deal with set-piece situations, stating cited by The Liverpool Echo: "Teams have all got strategies and little things they do to create an advantage on set-plays, depending on the quality of the delivery and the players’ ability to attack it. We know Everton are one of the best teams in the league at doing that – credit to them."

He then added: "It is part of the game – you don’t get to hide away from it, you don’t get to be good at some things and not at others but [if you like your] game is undone by something that you are not giving yourself a chance with, that is never a good feeling."

Looking ahead to January, Kompany has now reportedly identified someone who could add some firepower up the other end of the pitch as he bids to save Burnley's top-flight status.

Burnley keen on Che Adams deal

According to TEAMtalk, Burnley are lining up a cut-price move for Southampton forward Che Adams, who could be available on the cheap as he is out of contract on the South Coast in the summer of 2024. The Saints are reluctant to lose the Scotland international in January, though are aware that he could leave at the end of the campaign for free.

Adams himself is open to the idea of returning to the Premier League and is high on the wanted list at Turf Moor, with Kompany acknowledging that bringing in the striker could be season-changing as the Clarets battle relegation. The former Manchester City defender is drawn to the 27-year-old's previous top-flight experience and would be enticed by the fact he is available for a modest fee.

Labelled "amazing" for his selfless mentality by boss Russell Martin, Adams has featured 19 times for Southampton this campaign across all competitions, registering four goals and two assists (Adams statistics – Transfermarkt).

Burnley could do with some extra options in the final third and Adams is a hard-working capable forward who could help to stretch defences with his pace and eye for the target.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Manchester City dominated the proceedings of the clash against the record Champions League winners after they opened the scoring through Rodrygo and eventually levelled the scores with a goal from Kevin De Bruyne in the 76th minute. However, despite their superiority, City were unable to get past Los Blancos and ended up losing when Mateo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva missed penalty kicks in the shootout.

  • WHAT RODRI SAID

Speaking after the match, Rodri said [via The Standard]: "Today I've only seen one team. In terms of defending, they defend and they knew how to suffer. We know how tough Real Madrid are, but in my opinion we should have gone through in terms of the chances and everything. But they know this competition and how to play. Congratulations to them.

"It is worse to try to find an explanation. They scored their only chance. Football does not pay attention to merit, it is only about putting the ball in the net. We did not expect them to be so, so far deep in their set up. We had the feeling that penalties suited them better.

"If we are more precise, we win the game. Madrid has won a tie that, in my opinion, we deserved to go through. It is their turn again, as usual. Now we have to get the boys up, we still have things to fight for."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

At the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night, the game saw Madrid try to defend their first-half lead against Pep Guardiola's juggernaut, and the move worked out as they managed to take the game to penalties after a 3-3 draw in the first leg and 1-1 in midweek. City's hopes of accomplishing the double treble were shattered as the Spanish powerhouses advanced to the semi-finals with a 4-3 victory from the spot.

England unchanged as fit-again Jonny Bairstow misses out

Ben Stokes will bat at No. 3 and Jos Buttler at No. 5, with Jonny Bairstow left out despite returning to fitness

George Dobell in Pallekele13-Nov-2018England have confirmed an unchanged team for the second Test in Pallekele. Ben Stokes will bat at No. 3 in place of Moeen Ali, who endured a poor Test with the bat in Galle and will drop to No. 6.Stokes’ technique – and, increasingly, his temperament – are rated highly by the England management. While there was some consideration to his workload, given he will be expected to inject some pace into the England bowling attack and also field in the cordon to the seamers and at slip to the spinners, he was ultimately considered more suited to the No. 3 position than Jos Buttler, who will bat at No. 5.Joe Root has stressed, however, that the batting order should be viewed as somewhat flexible. Buttler was scheduled to come in at No. 3 in Galle if England had bowled first in order to provide Moeen with a break. It’s not impossible he could yet do so.”Ben’s game is in good shape and he is more than capable of batting at No. 3,” Root said. “We are in a fortunate position that many in the side could bat in that position. Ben’s technique is sound and he will be able to adapt to this role. He is one of the fittest guys in the side, so the intensity of batting in the top order and bowling as one of our three seamers will not faze him.”If we feel that he has done a tremendous workload with the ball, then we can adapt and alter the order if it’s necessary, but I don’t expect that to happen. Ben is relishing the added responsibility of doing the job.”Perhaps more significant is confirmation from the England camp that Jonny Bairstow was considered fit and available for selection but has not been recalled.

The emergence of Ben Foakes, who rendered himself undroppable after an outstanding debut in Galle, has squeezed Bairstow out of the side. Now without the allrounder status enjoyed by Moeen and Stokes with which to boost his selection chances, Bairstow has found himself competing for a spot as a specialist batsman. Unwilling – and perhaps unsuited – to batting at the top of the order (he has made no secret of his reluctance to bat in the top four in red-ball cricket), he was effectively up against Buttler for the final spot in the side. Buttler averages 35.97 in Test cricket; Bairstow 37.19.While the catalyst to Bairstow’s exclusion was the ankle injury sustained during the ODI series that provided Foakes with an opportunity, the roots of this issue go back a little further.Since he was moved to No. 5 in May – a move with which he was never entirely comfortable; he has scored all five of his Test centuries at Nos. 6 and 7 – Bairstow has averaged 23.16 in seven Tests. He has also been dismissed for a duck in each of his last three Tests. Over the last two-years, his Test average is 32.77.He was unsettled, too, by talk of losing the gloves. At first, Buttler appeared to be his main rival for the position, but the arrival of Foakes at international level has increased the competition. While he clearly has the ability to reclaim a place in the side, he may need to embrace batting out of position – possibly even at No. 3 – to do so.Jonny Bairstow faces a battle to regain his place in the Test team•Getty Images”Jonny was available for selection,” Root said. “Trevor Bayliss and I have spoken to him about finding the right balance for this Test with the conditions we are expecting. He understands the situation and is aware that we have to pick the side that is best suited to conditions we can expect in Kandy. It is unfortunate that he missed out through injury in the first Test. He is a integral part of our plans and is a key member of our core squad and his experience around the group is important.”While England arrived in Kandy with some thoughts of playing a fourth seamer instead of a third spinner, an inspection of the pitch has provoked a rethink. With Sri Lanka somewhat disappointed in the amount of assistance the surface in Galle provided their spinners, the Pallekele pitch is already unusually dry and is expected to provide more help for slow bowlers.”Having had a good look at the surface today, we feel the side that won the first Test will give us the best opportunity for us to get something out of this Test,” Root said. “The surface is dry and it will spin. The balance of the team is ideal for these conditions. We can also adapt, if the situation dictates, as we showed in Galle.”England have struggled to maintain a settled batting line-up pretty much since Andrew Strauss’ retirement in 2012. While Moeen has batted everywhere between No. 1 and No. 9, Stokes will now have batted everywhere from No. 3 to No. 11. Root likes to talk of flexibility, but that hints at a certain level of chaos.

Derby could lose sensation who club chiefs think is a potential superstar

Despite enduring a frustrating start this season, Derby County are still within touching distance of the League One play-offs as Paul Warne looks to guide the Rams back to the Championship. The Midlands club are aiming to avoid a repeat of the previous campaign when they missed out on a place in the top six by a single point, as Peterborough secured their spot.

Currently two points adrift of Stevenage in sixth place with a game in hand, Derby's fate is in their own hands in the early stages of the season, and Warne will hope that some consistency will result in a comfortable play-off qualification come the end of the season. However, the boss could lose a player that those at Pride Park are huge fans of following some alarming transfer news.

Derby transfer news

Not exactly big spenders, the Rams brought in a limited number of reinforcements during the summer, which has seen the club enjoy little progress. Warne will hope that, as the season goes on, his side will begin to establish themselves as one of the top sides in League One. Next up, Derby square off against Barnsley, hoping to make it four games without defeat in all competitions.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

No matter how this season goes, however, they could be forced to cope without last season's Scholar of the Year. According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, both Aston Villa and Southampton are plotting January moves for Darren Robinson, whose current Derby contract comes to an end during the summer of 2024.

As the 18-year-old's contract remains on course to reach its end, Derby may be left with no choice but to cash in on their academy graduate, despite the fact that those within the club believe he could go right to the very top.

Derby should fight to keep "great" Robinson

Derby would be wise in keeping one of their best young talents in Robinson. It will be difficult to convince the midfielder amid interest from both the Championship and Premier League, but perhaps now is the time to hand the teenager more minutes in the first-team. As things stand, Robinson has made just one appearance for Warne's side this season, which came in a 4-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers' U21s. The last thing those at Pride Park will want is to regret failing to agree a new contract with a player they reportedly consider to have the potential to become a superstar.

It comes as little shock that Robinson has already earned plenty of praise during his career, including from the head of youth at former club Dungannon, Dixie Robinson, who said, via Derby County News: "Darren has been excellent ever since he has came in. He got the chance to go over to Fleetwood in the winter and he asked could he train with the first team due to COVID restrictions and to be fair to him he has trained so well he has stayed with the first team since.

"Robbo has also been over at Stoke and most recently Derby where he has decided to sign for on a three year deal. Darren has a great attitude, works tremendously hard, technically very good and he gets about the pitch and I’ve no doubt, with the mindset that he has, I think he will go a long way in the game."

Tim Paine, Australia plotting for war of attrition

The Australia captain says patience, not aggression, will be a “real key” in the upcoming series against Pakistan in the UAE

Daniel Brettig19-Sep-2018In a year when Australian cricket’s cultural habits and instincts have been challenged so publicly, it seems fitting that the national team’s first Test assignment since the Newlands ball-tampering scandal involves a task requiring plenty of self-denial.Most of the best Australian teams have been known for forcing the pace, but the captain Tim Paine was clear on the team’s departure for the UAE that success in the forthcoming series would be about attrition, not aggression.Just as Paine, the new coach Justin Langer and the rest of the touring party have had to ponder the image of the team and the way they conduct themselves against opponents who have stored up plenty of ill-feeling about Australia for some time – just ask Moeen Ali – so must they now work towards methodical, patient and consistent cricket in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, built on the bedrock of spending many painstaking hours at the batting crease.”I think it is going to be hard work over there, no doubt. I think games traditionally in the UAE take a long time so we are going to have to be really patient,” Paine said in Brisbane. “We have spoken about partnerships and patience and pressure, which is going to be a real key over there. So, games that sort of drag along for three or four days and it can happen really quickly on day five. So, it is about having your team in a position to strike late in the game.”We know that traditionally they’re really long, low-scoring days and it takes time to score your runs and you’ve just got to grind it out. So we’re going over there with that at the front of our minds, we’re going to have to play really hard, tough cricket, particularly from a batting side and then in the heat over there for our bowlers the same thing, it’s going to be about patience, try to wear them down and be in a position late in the game where we can make a move and win.”These words could have been lifted almost verbatim from a Ricky Ponting column for ESPNcricinfo in 2014, after the team led by Michael Clarke was trounced 2-0 by Pakistan on their last UAE visit. Paine’s team, shorn of Steve Smith and David Warner by suspension and Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood by injury, will need to perform with a great deal of collective unity in order to prosper against a team that triumphed over Australia in the recent Twenty20 triangular series in Zimbabwe. Some cues for possible success can be taken from the narrow defeat of Smith’s team on the 2017 India tour.Paine pointed to the role of Mitchell Starc, himself recently recovered from a foot stress injury, as a critical exemplar of the way the Australians would need to be “clever” in dealing with Pakistan, hard, slow pitches and high temperatures. “We have to be really careful with all our quicks over there, it is going to be over 40 degrees and really high humidity,” he said.Getty Images”So, we are going to have to be clever about how we use our bowlers – Starcy in particular who we know is a strike weapon. So, I expect him to be bowling short spells and as fast as he can. Really exciting to have him back, he’s clearly our spearhead so it’s going to be great to have his pace back, also his experience, and over in those conditions I think his batting can be really valuable as well with lower-order runs. We’re sure Starcy will have a really big series and if he does it’ll go a long way to winning it for us.”Obviously we’re missing a few important players, but we’ve spoken about it as a group before we went to England and it’s a great opportunity for new players to step up. Looking forward to getting the Test group back together and playing some good, hard cricket. Probably the silver lining of what’s happened is we’re going to see some really good young cricketers coming through and the guys we’ve picked we know have got some real talent and it’ll be great to see them on the international stage.”As for the team’s on-field conduct and image, Paine suggested a players’ charter, the crux of a team review helmed by the former opening batsman Rick McCosker, was close to completion. He also indicated that he would be eager to reprise a pre-match shared handshakes ritual between the two competing teams as a gesture of goodwill, something he first used in the final Test of the South Africa series at the Wanderers.”Yeah potentially, if they want to. I think it is a nice way to start a series, it is a good show of sportsmanship but by no means are we going to be taking it easy,” Paine said. “We are going there to win, and to play the way that Australian cricket teams are known for playing, which is really hard. It’s going to be about our actions as a team, not what we talk about.”I think the Australian way has always been to play hard but to play fair and that will be no different this series. There are always a lot of eyes on the Australian cricket team wherever we play so that is going to be no different. This team is really, really clear on what is expected and what the standards are of the Australian cricket team and we’ll uphold them.”

De Villiers to South Africa's rescue?

It may not happen in time to sort out SA’s mess before the second Test against SL, but the former batsman could be working in a coaching capacity with the national team in the near future

Firdose Moonda17-Jul-2018

It may not happen in time to give South Africa’s batsman tips ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo on Friday, but Cricket South Africa is hoping to secure the services of retired great AB de Villiers in the near future. De Villiers walked away from all international cricket in May, but will continue to be available for the IPL and his domestic franchise, Titans. He has indicated interest in a consultancy role in the future, Thabang Moroe, CSA’s new permanent CEO, said.Moroe, who had been serving in an acting capacity since September last year, spoke to de Villiers “two days after his retirement” to gauge whether the batsman would like to move towards a coaching role and was heartened by what he heard. “He has indicated it would be something he is keen on. But we need to talk about the scale,” Moroe said at a press conference following his appointment. “AB has just retired with the notion of him wanting to spend more time with family. If I am going to put him in the development or pipeline structures and he ends up spending more time away than when he was in the national team, it is obviously not going to work for him.”De Villiers’ work-life balance had been behind his decision to take a break from the game in early 2016, when he went on sabbatical from the longest format. He returned in December 2017, refreshed and in the form of his life. He scored seven half-centuries and a hundred in eight Tests on comeback, before calling time on a celebrated career, marked by his innovation as much as his enthusiasm.Harnessing those qualities is something any national team would want to do, but South Africa recognise they will need to work around de Villiers’ schedule when he is ready to transition into coaching. “We need to sit down and agree on how we are going to do it, when we are doing it and the details around it. But it’s something he has indicated he would like to do,” Moroe said.De Villiers has not worked as a coach previously. But, as a former international, he would automatically be considered to hold a Level 2 certificate. Moroe did not provide any information on whether de Villiers would consider further coaching studies.South Africa currently have a support staff that includes Dale Benkenstein, who is the batting coach. Previously, Neil McKenzie had worked as batting consultant.

"Outstanding" Aston Villa player may be out longer than initially expected

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery may need to raincheck any plans he had to re-introduce one of his star players as a new development has emerged regarding his injury status.

What's the latest news involving Aston Villa?

According to Football Insider, Aston Villa are keen to offer Ollie Watkins a new bumper contract in the West Midlands to secure his long-term future, given that his present deal will expire in the summer of 2025. The outlet claim that Watkins is happy with life at Aston Villa and his status as a first-team starter and there is now a growing belief from both sides that a deal will be concluded to ensure the England international remains at Villa Park.

Nevertheless, FootballTransfers indicate that Arsenal director Edu Gaspar has engaged in direct contact with Watkins' agent over the possibility of trying to lure the Torquay-born striker to north London.

Chelsea are also believed to be keen on Watkins, who is said to want a new five-year contract at Aston Villa worth in excess of £150,000 per week. Despite interest from Mauricio Pochettino's Blues, former Brentford man Watkins would prefer a move to Arsenal and is a boyhood fan of the Gunners.

Cited by 90min, Aston Villa boss Emery has commented on the situation and never gave much away regarding Watkins' future, stating: "We are in touch. His commitment to the club is amazing. Watkins' commitment every day is very high. Every day he wants to improve. He wants to work and to help the team."

Next up for Aston Villa is a home tie against Everton in the third round of the Carabao Cup and the Villans will hope to progress to the next phase of a competition they could stand a real chance of going far in this term.

Who has been dealt an injury blow at Aston Villa?

Cited by The Express & Star, Aston Villa star Alex Moreno could be out for another fortnight after a slight setback to the initial timescale for his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Villans' boss Emery has explained why the Spaniard may be out for slightly longer than expected, stating in a recent interview: "His injury was very hard. He's been better and better, but he is not feeling 100 per cent comfortable to play. We decided to stop some days, maybe one week or two weeks. Hopefully he is being close again to being in the squad."

Aston Villa defender Alex Moreno.

In his short time at Aston Villa, Moreno has become a popular player among supporters, registering three assists in 19 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Labelled "outstanding" by former Aston Villa star Alan Hutton, the 30-year-old has excelled in comparison to his positional peers across Europe's top five divisions in the art of progressive carries, having completed an average of 3.80 per 90 minutes in the last 365 days, putting him in the 94th percentile for this metric, as per FBRef.

Lucas Digne has deputised admirably at left-back in Moreno's absence; however, there is no doubt Emery will want as many options as possible and the news that the former Real Betis man may be out for a little longer will come as a blow to everyone concerned at Villa Park.

Afinal, o que é o jogo posicional? L! consulta especialistas e jornalistas

AS CARACTERÍSTICAS GERAIS DO JOGO POSICIONAL

Veja!

– Os jogadores devem ficar dispostos em diferentes alturas, facilitando a criação das linhas de passes;
– É fundamental dar amplitude para que os corredores interiores apareçam, seja com os pontas, seja com os laterais;
– É fundamental o conceito do “homem livre”;
– É fundamental que as superioridades numéricas se construam desde a primeira linha;
– A condução permite atrair rivais e, assim, provocar a aparição do “homem livre”;

Carlos Eduardo Mansur – Repórter e colunista do jornal O Globo

Zimbabwe make it three wins in three

Zimbabwe recorded their third win on the trot with an 89-run victory over Hong Kong at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. Zimbabwe’s was an innings of two distinct halves. The tournament hosts raced to 137 for 2 in the first 20 overs, but then, as the pitch slowed and Hong Kong’s lines tightened, they failed to hit a single boundary after the 32nd over and finally limped to 263 for 9 despite Hamilton Masakadza’s 84. Hong Kong’s response never really got going, and though Anshuman Rath recorded his second consecutive fifty in the tournament, they were bowled out in the 47th over.”We knew today was going to be tough,” Zimbabwe captain Graeme Cremer said after the win. “They’ve beaten Afghanistan, and we didn’t want to be in the same boat. So the guys came out firing. The guys really wanted it, I could see it out in the field.”Solomon Mire and Cephas Zhuwao got Zimbabwe’s innings off to a flying start after they were, somewhat surprisingly, put in to bat. Dispensing with the need for singles, Zhuwao favoured all out attack and slog-swept the second ball over the match to the square-leg boundary. By the end of the third over, he had added two huge sixes and another boundary to race into the 20s.More carnage was to come. Against Afghanistan, offspinner Ehsan Khan bowled with both economy and guile, but in different conditions at Queens, Zhuwao smashed his first four deliveries to the boundary. At the other end, Solomon Mire had just a single to his name while Zhuwao rushed into the 40s. But the fun was not to last; shortly after raising Zimbabwe’s fifty, Zhuwao slogged at one too many and was well caught by Waqas Barkat on the ropes at square leg for 45.”I think those [top-order] runs cost us the game,” Hong Kong’s captain Babar Hayat said. “Although, the way we bowled in the middle overs and in the last overs was brilliant.”Masakadza soon picked up where he left off, and with Mire striking the ball with fierce power at the other end, Zimbabwe ended the opening Powerplay in the healthy position of 81 for 1.”I think life is quite easy for me at the moment,” Masakadza, who was named Man of the Match for his innings, said. “Coming in behind those two – Cephas and Solomon – is quite easy, because they really put the bowlers under pressure. They’re getting us off to fast starts, so it’s a lot easier for me to come in and take my time and get myself in.After Mire fell victim to Nadeem Ahmed’s left-arm spin, Brendan Taylor joined Masakadza at the crease for the definitive partnership of the match. Together they put on 98 in just over 18 overs, setting what should have been a commanding platform for the tournament hosts.Masakadza brought up his fifty, from 64 deliveries, with a push down the ground in the 25th over. Masakadza’s celebrations often have a relevance, either personal or popular, and today, upon reaching fifty he gave the Wakanda salute from the movie .ICC

Taylor, meanwhile, had looked in particularly good touch through (or over) cover today, but an attacking offside shot eventually brought his dismissal. He drove hard at Nawaz and Ehsan Nawaz held a stinging catch inches from the turf at extra cover. The umpires conferred with the fielder to confirm that the catch was taken cleanly, and off Taylor went.Zimbabwe were 181 for 3 then, and Masakadza took them to the second drinks break in the relatively healthy position of 211 for 3. Just before the break, Masakadza had hit his one and only six, but that boundary – in the 32nd over – remarkably proved to be the last of Zimbabwe’s innings as Hong Kong’s bowlers staged a brave comeback. With Raza slicing a catch to the cover sweeper and Masakadza slashing a cut to short third man, Zimbabwe slipped to 216 for 5, and to their credit Hong Kong never let them back into the innings.”There was a period that I got a little ahead of myself, but I calmed down and I was looking to bat at least 45 overs,” Masakadza said. “So that [not batting through] was the most disappointing thing for me. It definitely did [slow up] and I got a little frustrated.”Wickets tumbled with some regularity as Zimbabwe tried to hit their way out of trouble, and when Craig Ervine pulled Nawaz to Nizakat Khan on the midwicket boundary, the bowler had his fourth wicket and Zimbabwe were nine down. Just 40 runs had come from the last 10 overs, with four wickets lost.”It might have had to do with the ball,” Cremer said. “Once it got a bit softer, it started sticking in the wicket. Even our guys that were in found it a bit harder to rotate the strike. But the wicket did slow up. When the ball was new, it would skid on and you could just hit through the line of the ball.”Hong Kong must have fancied their chances of pulling off a second upset in as many matches, but Zimbabwe’s new-ball bowlers immediately put them on the back foot. Jarvis and Chatara picked up a wicket apiece in their opening spells, and when Hayat failed to read a Cremer wrong ‘un, Hong Kong were 35 for 3.The response from Rath and Scott McKechnie was to cut out all risk from their batting, and they cobbled together a partnership that extended beyond 50 and was composed mainly of ones and twos. But once again it was Sikandar Raza’s golden arm that brought the breakthrough. Tired of nudging and pushing, McKechnie aimed an expansive sweep at a full delivery and was bowled for 18.”We did know it was going to spin a bit in the afternoon, and get a bit slower,” Cremer said. With Zimbabwe’s spinners constricting Hong Kong’s scoring options, their resolve seemed to evaporate. Sean Williams, returning from a broken spinning finger, showed there was no permanent damage with two quick wickets, and Hong Kong were 101 for 6. Raza struck again, spinning one past Barkat to pin him in front of his stumps and reduce them to 107 for 7; it seemed the match would finish in a hurry.Rath had other ideas. Just as he had done against Afghanistan two days earlier, he slowly built momentum in his own innings. Initially accumulating with correct, upright batting, he slowly came out of his shell and reached his fifty in the 35th over. But there was little support from the other end, and in an unwinnable position Rath eventually fell playing one shot too many.”The way we bowled, to restrict them to under 300, we knew that if we stayed in we could chase this target,” Hayat said. “But with the way they bowled, they didn’t give us any chance to get back in the game.”The victory left Zimbabwe assured of a Super-Six berth, though the result of their final match will determine how many points they take through to that stage (only points scored against the other teams that progress are carried through). Hong Kong are also still very much in with a chance of progressing, provided they can beat Nepal at Bulawayo Athletic Club on Monday.
