Newcastle being shortchanged by star with less minutes than Tonali in 23/24

Newcastle United have invested heavily in the playing squad over the last couple of seasons, with the signings making a huge impact at St James' Park.

The Magpies finished fourth in the Premier League, qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League – an unimaginable feat given the club were in the Premier League's relegation zone at the time of the PIF takeover.

Players such as Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak have been the most successful additions since their respective £40m and £63m moves – with the latter scoring 19 times in 26 Premier League appearances this season.

However, last summer, the club invested heavily once more as Eddie Howe's side bolstered their ranks, looking to build on the success from the season prior.

Nearly a year on from one player's arrival on Tyneside, the Magpies' talent has struggled to force his way into the first-team and is starting to look like a poor investment for the time being.

Lewis Hall's stats at Newcastle this season

After originally joining the club on loan, it was confirmed that Newcastle would complete the £28m deal to sign full-back Lewis Hall from fellow Premier League side Chelsea.

However, the 19-year-old has struggled to make the impact he would've envisaged at St James' Park, only featuring in 14 Premier League games this season – only four of which have been from the start.

Hall – who ranks in the top 16% among his European peers for touches in the opposition box – is a more attacking option than regular left-back Dan Burn, but Howe has often preferred playing the 6 foot 6 centre-back out of position for his defensive attributes.

The peripheral youngster has only managed to feature for 607 minutes for the Magpies this season, a tally that is 82 minutes less than £55m signing Sandro Tonali, who's been missing since October, after receiving a ten-month suspension for breaching betting rules.

Tonali has also received a further sanction in recent times, after betting on four Newcastle games after his move to Tyneside, which has resulted in a suspended two-month ban and a £20k fine for his troubles.

Despite his absence, the former AC Milan man has still featured more than Hall for Howe's side this season, whilst the 19-year-old's market value has also taken a big hit just months after his big-money move.

Lewis Hall's market value in 2024

Just a couple of months after his £28m move to the club from Chelsea, left-back Hall has seen his market value plummet to just £6.7m, as per Football Transfers.

Undoubtedly, his drop in value is down to his lack of game time under Howe, with the youngster still unable to obtain a run of games in a starting role despite the club's recent injury issues.

joelinton-hall-newcastle-opinion

The hope will be that the rising star will come good for the Magpies, with Howe claiming he's a signing for the "long-term" but he may not be at the level required down the line should he not consistently feature at St James'.

However, for the time being, it appears the club are being shortchanged for the transfer, with Mauricio Pochettino's side getting the better end of the deal at present.

Aston Villa eyeing Luiz 2.0 in "the best deep-lying playmaker" of 23/24

Aston Villa are preparing for the second leg of their Europa Conference League semifinal against Olympiacos in what is arguably their most important match of the season.

On the transfer front, meanwhile, it appears as though Unai Emery has one eye on the upcoming summer window, however…

Aston Villa's search for a midfielder

With Champions League football looking increasingly likely for the Midlands side next term, Emery is aiming to bolster his first-team squad with bigger challenges ahead.

According to Spanish outlet AS, Villa are showing plenty of interest in Girona midfielder Aleix Garcia ahead of the summer.

They face some stiff competition as Bayer Leverkusen and Bournemouth are also interested in luring the player away from La Liga once the season is over.

The good news is Emery won't need to pay over the odds for the Girona star. AS claim that his release clause is between €15m (£12.9m) and €20m (£17.2m), which could make the move even more appealing to the Villa boss.

Adding some midfield depth could be crucial heading into the 2024/25 campaign and signing Garcia is a chance for the club to secure Douglas Luiz 2.0.

Aleix Garcia’s statistics for Girona this season

Like Garcia, Luiz has also played for Manchester City and Girona during the early stages of his career.

City signed him in 2017 but loaned him out to the Spanish side for two seasons prior to joining Villa in 2019, making 46 appearances across all competitions in Spain.

This season, the Brazilian has emerged as a key member of Emery’s side, registering 20 goal contributions – ten goals and ten assists – across 50 matches for the club in all competitions.

Aston Villa players including Douglas Luiz

With the building blocks in place to develop a genuinely wonderful starting XI, Garcia – who has been dubbed "the best deep-lying playmaker this season" by data analyst Ben Mattinson – could certainly add some more attacking qualities to this area.

The 26-year-old has played 36 matches during the current campaign, scoring three times, and grabbing six assists, indicating how much of a threat he poses from the heart of the midfield.

Barcelona starlet Pedri even hailed his compatriot for his stunning 2023/24 campaign, saying: “There are many, Alex Garcia is having a great season in Girona, I have him in my Fantasy lineup.”

Impressing players such as Pedri clearly means Garcia is doing something right. His passing ability has stood out over the previous 365 days as, when compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, the Spaniard currently ranks in the top 5% for passes attempted (80.28) and in the top 8% for progressive passes (7.9) per 90.

Not only that, but the midfielder also ranks in the top 16% for assists (0.18) and shot-creating actions (3.57) per 90, showing that he can also be a major threat when going forward and Emery would love to add another midfielder with this attacking ability to this squad.

If Villa do secure a Champions League spot for next season, it will certainly make it easier to attract players such as Garcia during the summer transfer window.

£100,000-per-week ace will look to quit Tottenham this summer – BBC pundit

A £100,000-per-week ace has been tipped to look for the Tottenham exit door this summer as Ange Postecoglou is faced with a few key exit decisions.

Spurs players who could leave this summer

The north Londoners could orchestrate somewhat of a mass exodus by the time the next transfer window opens, as a host of players face pretty uncertain futures right now.

ByEmilio Galantini Apr 24, 2024

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has started just a handful of league games this season, despite featuring in almost every match, but the vast majority of his cameos have come from the substitute's bench.

This has lead to suggestions that the Denmark international could depart Tottenham, especially with just a year remaining on his contract, as the Lilywhites will not want to let him depart for free in 2025.

As many as five senior players are expected to leave Tottenham in the summer, with Djed Spence, Tanguy Ndombele, Joe Rodon, Japhet Tanganga and Sergio Reguilon all currently away on loan spells and don't look a part of Postecoglou's plans moving forward.

The latter, who's out on a temporary stint at Brentford right now after returning from another one at Man United in January, has failed to make a success of his £27.6 million move from Real Madrid in 2020.

Reguilon, who's actually rumoured to be on £100,000-per-week at Spurs (The Athletic), will also have to play second fiddle to star man Destiny Udogie if he is to stay for 2024/2025.

Reguilon will look to leave Tottenham soon

Speak to Tottenham News, BBC Radio 5 Live pundit Alan Hutton has said Reguilon will look to leave Tottenham this summer, as he seeks to revitalize his career elsewhere.

"It’s an interesting one, I still think he’s a good player,” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“He’s an attacking full-back and he’s gone out on loan and he’s done well. You look at the situation that’s just arisen at this moment in time and he’s an ideal fit to come in and play.

“There’s a lack of numbers there in the style that Ange wants to play so is that an option to bring him back into the fold? Is he going to be happy playing second fiddle? We know Udogie signed a massively long-term contract so he is there for the foreseeable and will be the go-to guy.

“Will Reguilon be happy to play second fiddle or not? I don’t think he will, to be honest with you, I think he’ll want to go somewhere and play, that will be his mindset.

“If he doesn’t go to Brentford because they can’t afford the deal or whatever, I think he’ll still look to try and get out in the summer.”

Carsley named interim head coachTakes charge for Nations League fixturesFollows Southgate exit post-Euro 2024WHAT HAPPENED?

Former Everton midfielder Carsley had been in charge of the U21s since July 2021, famously guiding the Young Lions to European Championship glory in 2023. He replaces Southgate, who stepped down after eight memorable years in charge following the England's defeat to Spain in the final of Euro 2024 last month.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The 50-year-old will take charge of England's upcoming Nations League games against Ireland and Finland, but he could remain in the post thereafter as the FA continue their extensive search for a permanent replacement for Southgate. Carsley is in the frame for the job alongside the likes of Graham Potter and Eddie Howe, and he will be desperate to impress in the interim period in the knowledge his predecessor followed the same path to landing the senior role.

Getty ImagesWHAT CARSLEY SAID

In a statement, Carsley said: "It’s an honour to step up and lead this England squad on an interim basis. As I am very familiar with the players and the cycle of international football, it makes sense for me to guide the team while the FA continues the process to recruit a new manager. My main priority is to ensure continuity and our goal is to secure promotion in the Nations League."

WHAT THE FA SAID

Explainining the decision to appoint Carsley, Mark Bullingham, FA CEO, said: “Lee is a fantastic coach who is well known to the majority of our current senior squad having worked with most at international or club level. He offers us a very strong interim solution and we are confident he will perform well in the UEFA Nations League games ahead. We are grateful to Lee for stepping up to manage the team while we continue with our recruitment process.”

Wolves have been rinsed by a player who earns more than Joao Gomes

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been excellent all season long with Gary O’Neil transforming the club on the field.

However, the manner in which they suffered their recent 3-2 home defeat to Coventry City will infuriate the boss and the fans, which will most likely be an anomaly over the season.

Despite being handed a loss, there were some standout players from the tie, including Rayan Ait Nouri, who scored and assisted, and Joao Gomes, who was as solid as ever.

What both of those players have in common is a low wage while bringing quality to the field, but unfortunately, that isn’t the case for everyone in the squad.

Joao Gomes’ performances for Wolves

In January 2023, Wolves acquired the services of a young midfielder from Flamengo for a fee of £15m, which is beginning to look like a bargain based on his recent performances.

Gomes has grown into his role in O’Neil’s team this season, which primarily focuses on winning the ball back and retaining it, as displayed by averaging the third most tackles per game (3.5) in the Premier League this season.

The only players he sits behind are Sheffield United's Vini Souza and Fulham enforcer Joao Palhinha.

The 23-year-old also showcased his ability on the international stage, starting for Brazil against England in a 1-0 victory, which will most definitely provide him with confidence ahead of his return to Wolves next week.

Nonetheless, the Old Gold looked to have also secured a fantastic deal on his wages given what he offers on the field, with Gomes earning £30k-per-week, making him far from one of the highest paid at the club, unlike some individuals who are far less influential than the Brazilian.

One such player is Boubacar Traore who has struggled to have the same level of influence as Gomes in the engine room at Molineux.

Wolves' teenage sensation could be Joao Gomes' dream future partner

The future of Wolves’ midfield looks extremely exciting.

ByTom Lever Feb 18, 2024 What Boubacar Traore earns compared to the Wolves squad

Traore is a player that not all of the Wolves faithful will truly know about, which is completely understandable given his lack of game time since his arrival.

The 22-year-old midfielder joined the English side originally on loan last season, before making the move permanent in the summer for a fee of £9.5m.

However, he has failed to make an impact when handed an opportunity this campaign, becoming the fourth-choice midfielder behind Gomes, Mario Lemina, and Tommy Doyle.

Over his two years at Wolves, the Mali international has started just seven Premier League matches, with his latest being the 2-1 away defeat to Arsenal at the start of December.

Nonetheless, even though Traore has featured far less than Gomes, the number six is earning almost double his wage, with an exact figure being £25k-per-week more than the Brazilian.

#2 Nelson Semedo

#3 Hwang Hee-chan

#4 Matheus Cunha

#5 Boubacar Traore

£55k

As you can see, this puts the midfielder among the highest earners in the entire Wolves squad, earning slightly less than Matheus Cunha and over five times more than Ait Nouri, who earns just £10k-per-week.

In truth, Traore is still young and he has plenty of room for development, but at this current moment, he has failed to justify his high salary on the field, as displayed by his 0.9 tackles, 13 passes, and 1.6 duels won per game.

Handing the relatively inexperienced player a large contract may have been a mistake by Wolves, but they will still hope that O’Neil can mould Traore into a brilliant player in the future.

O’Neil benches Lemina in predicted Wolves lineup vs Sheff Utd

The job Gary O’Neil is doing at Wolverhampton Wanderers this season is nothing short of remarkable, especially after losing his two best midfielders last summer.

Ruben Neves and Matheus Nunes both departed Molineux, yet O’Neil adapted and has managed to bring out the best of the players he has at his disposal.

The Old Gold have recorded a Premier League double over Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, while also defeating Manchester City during the early stages of the campaign, and their recent form has been solid.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

A home tie against Sheffield United awaits the Midlands side tomorrow afternoon and considering the Blades are propping up the rest of the league, it represents an ideal opportunity for O’Neil to claim another three points.

With that in mind, here's a look at the potential Wolves starting XI that will take to the Molineux pitch tomorrow…

1

GK – Jose Sa

There won't be a change to the goalkeeper as Sa will retain his place in the starting XI.

The Portuguese shot-stopper has missed only two league matches this season and was even named as the captain against Spurs in the 2-1 win last weekend.

Across his 23 matches thus far, however, Sa has kept just three clean sheets and if it were not for the wonderful form of their attacking options, the club may be in a slightly more precarious situation.

2

CB – Max Kilman

Max Kilman

The captain has played every minute of every league match so far this season and has been a rock at the back for the club.

The 26-year-old is contracted to the Old Gold until 2028, but if he continues this current rich vein of form, then he may just start attracting attention from potential suitors, that’s for sure.

3

CB – Craig Dawson

The veteran centre-back has played 23 of the 25 league ties Wolves have played this term and against Spurs, he was in fine form.

Not only did he make ten clearances and block three shots, but Dawson won seven of his nine contested duels during the victory and this display was key to Wolves securing all three points.

4

CB – Toti

Like Dawson, Toti was also extremely solid against Spurs last week. He made ten clearances, four interceptions, two tackles and was not dribbled past once, showcasing his physical strength in one-on-one battles.

Toti has already made more league appearances this season than he did during the whole of the 2022/23 campaign, and he is slowly emerging as a key member of O’Neil’s side.

5

RM – Nelson Semedo

The 30-year-old had spent the previous few months playing in an unfamiliar role on the right-hand side of the midfield due to O’Neil utilising either a 3-5-2 or 3-4-2-1 formation.

His attacking talents have not exactly been on show, however, as he has registered just one goal and one assist in all competitions.

6

CM – Joao Gomes

Joao Gomes

The Brazilian enjoyed one of his finest games for the club last week as he scored a brace which proved to be decisive in the victory over Spurs.

He also made six tackles and four clearances as his defensive abilities were also on show, and he will retain his place against the Blades tomorrow afternoon.

7

CM – Tommy Doyle

Tommy Doyle

Mario Lemina enjoyed a decent game last weekend, yet he may have to make way in order for Tommy Doyle to start against Sheffield United.

The on-loan Manchester City starlet was hailed as “exceptional” by talent scout Jacek Kulig back in 2021 as he discussed the wealth of talent that City possessed in their youth sides.

The youngster has started just five Premier League matches this season, yet when he has featured, the 22-year-old has showcased his talents.

He holds an 86% pass success rate, while winning 56% of his total duels and losing possession just 5.6 per game and a tie against the bottom side in the league could be an ideal opportunity for him to come into the starting XI.

8

LM – Rayan Ait-Nouri

Rayan Ait-Nouri up against West Ham's Jarrod Bowen.

The Algerian did not enjoy the best of games against Spurs last week. He won only three of his ten contested ground duels during the encounter, along with succeeding with just one dribble attempt and losing possession a staggering 17 times.

Due to a lack of options on the left side of the midfield, however, Ait-Nouri will retain his spot in the starting XI and O’Neil will be hoping a tie against the Blades will allow him to perform better.

9

AM – Pedro Neto

Wolves winger Pedro Neto.

In front of the four-man midfield, O’Neil will deploy two attacking midfielders and one will be Neto, who has registered an impressive nine assists in the top flight already, despite playing only 16 games.

The 23-year-old grabbed an assist against Spurs and with the Blades’ defence conceding 65 goals in just 25 matches, he will certainly have his eye on scoring a goal or two tomorrow.

10

AM – Pablo Sarabia

Alongside Neto, Sarabia will be deployed, and the duo have the ability to cause plenty of chaos on Sunday afternoon.

The Spaniard has scored twice and chipped in with nine assists in all competitions, but he didn’t play in the reverse clash against the Blades back in November – although he must be unleashed tomorrow.

The 31-year-old made three key passes last week and missed a big chance, suggesting that with a bit better finishing, he may have added to his goal tally for the season.

The north Londoners are also said to be keeping true to their policy of seeking out Europe's most promising up-and-coming starlets, after sensationally beating Barcelona to the signing of Lucas Bergvall in January.

Indeed, Club Brugge starlet Antonio Nusa could still join Tottenham later this year with his transfer still not entirely ruled out.

Antonio Nusa for Norway.

Now, according to TEAMtalk journalist Fraser Gillan on X, Postecoglou's side may well kill two birds with one stone – the signing of a centre-forward and one more rising talent – as a swoop for starlet Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel becomes possible.

Suggestion Tel could join Tottenham

The 18-year-old, signed by Bayern for £26 million, has bagged three goals and three assists over 18 substitute Bundesliga appearances under Thomas Tuchel so far this season. However, he's yet to start a single encounter, which may well be frustrating for the teenager.

TEAMtalk say that Tottenham are eyeing up Tel alongside the likes of Chelsea and Man United, suggesting north London is now a potential landing spot for Kane's promising young teammate.

Tel has been praised by Kane already this season, while goalkeeper Sven Ulreich has branded the Frenchman a "role model" for youngsters at the Allianz Arena.

“Mathys is a fine guy, is inquisitive, willing to learn, down-to-earth and works a lot on himself,” Ulreich said.

“He is a role model for all the young players who come here. He comes up and does his job. We’ve had other examples that didn’t handle it that way.”

Bayern Munich striker Mathys Tel.

Thomas Muller also lavished real praise on Tel, urging him to keep up his exciting and direct style of play.

"When we remember Arjen Robben, we sometimes thought, ‘Now he should have seen the man next to him,’ but he was so focused on the goal – that also gave him a lot of goals," said Muller.

"Mathys should keep doing his thing. Look for a lot of shots – with his finishing skills."
