Havertz upgrade: Arsenal target prolific £352k-p/w "goal-machine"

It’s been a frustrating campaign for Arsenal this year.

Mikel Arteta’s side have lost just two games in the Premier League and are the only team to remain unbeaten at home, yet they find themselves nine points off leaders Liverpool.

The main reason the Gunners currently find themselves so far behind the Reds then is not their defence but their attack, as goals have been harder to come by this year than in the previous two campaigns.

So, recent reports linking the club with one of Europe’s most devastating strikers should excite the fans, even if it could be bad news for Kai Havertz.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal are one of several clubs interested in Juventus’ star striker Dušan Vlahović.

Interestingly, the report has revealed that alongside the Gunners, fellow Premier League side and London rivals Chelsea are also keen to land the Serbian international.

Despite proving to be an essential player for the Old Lady, the story claims that their financial position could see them sell him next year, with other reports from earlier this year suggesting he’d cost around £67m.

It could be a costly and complicated transfer to get over the line, but given Vlahovic’s incredible ability, it’s worth pursuing, even if it could be bad news for Havertz.

How Vlahović compares to Havertz

So, if Arsenal were to go out and splash £67m or more on Vlahović next month, it would almost certainly be with the intention of playing him as much as possible.

Therefore, he’d be in direct competition with Havertz for a starting berth in the team, so how do the pair compare?

Well, when it comes to the most important metric of all for a striker, their output, it’s the Juventus star that comes out on top, and consistently so.

For example, since the start of the 22/23 season, the Serbian “goal machine,” as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has found the back of the net 44 times and provided nine assists in 102 appearances, equating to a goal involvement every 1.92 games.

In contrast, the Gunners’ number 29 has scored 35 goals and provided 11 assists in 123 games across the same period, meaning he’s managed a slightly less impressive average of a goal involvement every 2.67 games.

Moreover, while the German has been playing for the second-best team in England over the last season and a half and has benefited from the chances created by Martin Odegaard and Saka, the Belgrade-born gem has been a reliable source of goals for a Juventus team who are miles away from the team who won Scudettos at a canter.

Lastly, with a brilliant record of 49 goals and eight assists in 108 appearances for Fiorentina, Arteta and Co can rest assured that the £352k-per-week sensation can produce a regular supply of goals when playing for another team.

Ultimately, while he might not be the first name on many fans’ wishlists, Vlahović has proven over the last few years that he’s an elite goalscorer, and given Arsenal’s struggles in front of goal this season, he’s the perfect signing.

Forget Archer: New boss can strike gold with "exceptional" Southampton star

Interim Southampton manager Simon Rusk would have been pleased with his team’s efforts in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night, even as Arne Slot’s Liverpool picked up a victory on the South Coast.

It wasn’t a complete stroll for the Reds when travelling to St. Mary’s, in a game they might have been expecting to cruise by in after Southampton’s recent 5-0 loss on their own patch to Tottenham Hotspur, but the table-topping side in the Premier League had to make do with a slim 2-1 win instead.

In particular, Rusk’s Saints will latch onto their second-half display for many a positive, with Cameron Archer scoring his side’s only goal of the night to boost his confidence.

Standout Saints performers vs Liverpool

Archer would gift the hosts some hope that they could get back into the EFL Cup contest, after Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott had combined for a quickfire first-half double.

That is the former Aston Villa’s man fifth strike in all competitions for his lowly side, and this is very much the pick of the bunch, as the Southampton number 19 was gifted time to take on various different Liverpool shirts before curling a fine effort home.

Away from the 23-year-old making Liverpool worry slightly, the likes of recently capped England senior international Taylor Harwood-Bellis also stood out, with the young centre-back winning 100% of his duels even when facing off against the aforementioned menace that is Nunez.

Rusk would have also been pleased by a second-half cameo from Yukinara Sugawara too, who completed three key passes from just 29 minutes of action, but another star shone bright for the Saints even with the level of opposition they were up against.

Fernandes' performance in numbers

Mateus Fernandes is one individual the new Saints manager – whenever Rusk steps down – will surely want to keep around the first team picture, after putting in another encouraging display for his new club.

Deployed down the left channel for this mid-week clash, the Portuguese midfielder was energetic and brave for his team when going in for duels and tackles in an intense second-half showing, whilst also being a threat when launching forward on occasion.

In keeping with his team’s lively second-half display, Fernandes would win eight duels and complete four tackles, whilst also proving himself to be a competent performer in attack when his passes weren’t wayward, with two key passes tallied up. It is no surprise that analyst Ben Mattinson previously lauded his “exceptional ability to play perfectly weighted through balls”.

The wide-eyed 20-year-old would also be involved in a major moment of controversy near the close of the EFL Cup clash, as he raced through on goal to try and equalise, only for Jarell Quansah to bring him down in what looked to be an obvious foul.

On another night, the Liverpool number 78 could have been sent off for his recklessness, but referee Simon Hooper would give nothing to the bemusement of the disgruntled home crowd and the agitated Southampton players.

As much as that would sour proceedings, Fernandes would have still been pleased with his efforts come full-time, with Daily Echo journalist George Rees-Julian gifting the former Sporting man a high 7/10 rating after the game, conceding that he was ‘robbed’ of a great chance at the end across a spirited outing.

He will hope he can stake a claim for more first-team opportunities moving forward, therefore, having already picked up 13 starts back in the Premier League under ex-boss Russell Martin.

Based off his display on Wednesday night against one of the top-flight’s most intimidating outfits, he should be given plenty more games in the division under the next regime.

Sold by Gerrard: Aston Villa hit gold over the ‘next Grealish’

Steven Gerrard’s last few months in charge of Aston Villa were a complete disaster. He was sacked from his position as manager on the 21st of October 2021, with the club 14th in the Premier League table on 12 points.

The Liverpool legend was replaced at the helm at Villa Park by Unai Emery. The Spaniard has since taken charge of over 100 games at the club, 106 to be exact, winning 56 of those. He did not have the smoothest start, with the mid-season break for the 2022 World Cup coming just three games into his tenure.

Over the last few transfer windows, the Spaniard has shaped the squad to his liking, with Gerrard’s final transfer window in charge underwhelming in comparison.

Villa’s 2022 summer transfer window

There were three significant incomings in the 2022 summer transfer window for the Villans. Gerrard looked to strengthen the spine of his team signing a centre-back, number six and number 10, which proved to be in vain given he was sacked months later.

Diego Carlos was the defender who made the move to Villa Park, joining from La Liga side Sevilla. He cost the club a reported £26m, and is one of the only surviving members of that transfer window. Carlos has played 56 games for the Midlands club so far.

Gerrard reunited with former Liverpool teammate Phillipe Coutinho on loan in January 2022, and he made his move to Villa permanent that summer for £17m.

He played just 43 times for the club, registering nine goal involvements, including a goal and two assists against Leeds United in a 3-0 win. He never really found his place under Emery and is out on loan in Brazil.

Leander Denconcker was the cheapest of the three main deals for Villa that summer. He joined for a reported £13m, although played just 36 times for the Midlands club and, again, never really made his way under Emery.

There were also two major sales under Gerrard in his final summer transfer window. One of those saw the departure of left-back Matt Targett to Newcastle United. The other one represented an excellent piece of business for the Villans, with Carney Chukwuemeka leaving the club.

Chukwuemeka's Villa departure

Versatile attacking midfielder Chukwuemeka left the club for Chelsea in August 2022 for £20m. The Austrian-born attacking midfielder must have been a painful sale for the Villans given how highly rated he was.

Former Aston Villa midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

Former Villa CEO Christian Purslow once believed that Chukwuemeka was “probably the best 16-year-old in England” back in 2020, and it wasn’t long before he broke into the first team at Villa Park.

His Villans debut came at the age of 17, younger than their last great academy star Jack Grealish, with Birmingham Live writer Alex Dicken explaining he could be the club’s second coming of the Manchester City star.

First Impressions

What did pundits and fans alike think about their new star signing when they arrived? Football FanCast's 'First Impressions' series has everything you need.

The boyhood Villa fan, now 29 years of age, played an impressive 213 times for the Midlands club, scoring 32 goals and grabbing 41 assists. He was crucial to their promotion to the Premier League in 2018/19, and subsequent survival the following two seasons.

As for his heir apparent, Chukwuemeka, the former Villa star played 16 times for the first team before making the move to Stamford Bridge, with Gerrard never really giving him the platform to show what he can do.

The season after making his debut, 2021/22, he played just 12 Premier League games, grabbing his only assist against Norwich City.

So, Villa sold one of their best academy stars in years, making pure profit along the way. That turned out to be a fantastic decision. Sadly, the midfielder’s career has somewhat stalled at Stamford Bridge, and he has not had many chances.

Carney-Chukwuemeka-Chelsea-star

Now into his third season at the west London club, the 21-year-old has played just 32 games in all competitions, scoring twice and grabbing one assist. He could now depart the club in January in search of regular first-team football.

So, looking back on it, the deal to sell one of Villa’s best academy stars in a long time has been worth it in the end. The Villans managed to make £20m of pure profit which Emery was able to reinvest, and although it is sad to see Chukwuemeka’s career derail slightly, he is likely to be able to get it back on track given his age and how highly rated he is.

127 touches, 105 passes: Amazing Chelsea ace was even better than Fernandez

Chelsea delivered yet another top-class performance, smashing Unai Emery’s Aston Villa side 3-0 at Stamford Bridge and going level on points with Arsenal after 13 games played in the Premier League.

Enzo Maresca’s men held 64% possession against the Villans, creating two big chances, taking 17 shots in the game, and generating 1.61 xG. The goals were scored by Nicolas Jackson, Enzo Fernández, and Cole Palmer, as the Blues continued their rich vein of form.

There were some key performances all over the pitch for Chelsea, one of which was the performance of 23-year-old midfielder, Fernandez, who scored a goal in back-to-back weeks, continuing his fine streak of form since returning to the side.

Enzo Fernández's performance in numbers

Fernandez found himself out of the Premier League starting XI under Maresca for a few weeks, as he chose to prioritise physicality in central areas, starting Roméo Lavia alongside Moises Caicedo.

However, since his return to the starting XI, Fernandez has made himself undroppable, scoring goals in successive Premier League games, and providing five assists in his previous four outings.

Alongside his goal against Aston Villa, Fernandez also managed two key passes, two out of two successful dribbles, and won six of his 11 ground duels, making three tackles.

The excellence of Fernandez has made him one of the first names on the team sheet in recent weeks, but he isn’t the only one, as Marc Cucurella is making himself undroppable with his performances, and it was another excellent one against Villa.

Marc Cucurella's performance in numbers

The 26-year-old Spaniard has made 15 appearances so far this season in all competitions, contributing to three clean sheets in his 1,100 minutes played.

Cucurella brings leadership, tenacity and hunger to the Chelsea team, making it a nightmare for attacking players to face him, getting stuck in, winning his duels, and getting under the opposition’s skin.

Against Villa, the full-back had an enormous 127 touches – the most of anyone on the pitch – and made 105/109 passes (96% completion). His sturdy nature on the ball, mixed with his aggression off of it, made him pivotal in this game.

The Spanish defender won four out of his seven ground duels, won his only aerial duel in the game, and made four tackles, clamping down his side of the pitch with his 1v1 defending. That said, it was his attacking contribution that was most impressive, steamrolling Jaden Philogene before taking the ball on the overlap to supply Jackson’s goal.

Emery tried to switch things up after 66 minutes, throwing Leon Bailey on the right to run at Cucurella, but the Spain international continued to come out on top, playing a huge part in Chelsea’s clean sheet.

Many questioned the £60m fee Cucurella cost the club back in 2022, especially after his tough start to life in blue. But since the halfway point of last season, the 26-year-old has shown his quality and settled into a real role in this squad. Now, many fans would suggest that the price tag was a bargain for what he brings to the side.

The Rondo: Should Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie stay or go? Milan and Juventus Champions League failures beg the question

GOAL US writers discuss a dire week for Milan and Juventus, and whether big-name Americans need to leave Serie A clubs

It was a rough week for Americans in Serie A. Milan and Juventus are always expected, at least to some degree, to fight for Champions League spots domestically. There will be ups and downs for both sides. Juve will probably be fine. For Milan, it's less certain, such is their poor form of late.

But the real failure here is the fact that neither side qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League, both losing in the playoff knockout phase last week. Milan fell to a Feyenoord side whose best player they recently stole in the January transfer window. Juve lost to PSV, who will go the rest of their season without their star striker – and were also missing a driving force in their midfield.

What does this all mean in Italy? Both clubs will certainly be immensely disappointed. Fan expectations were higher. Milan, in particular, will be up against it from their faithful, especially after spending big in the summer.

And for their American stars – Christian Pulisic, Yunus Musah, Tim Weah and Weston McKennie – the future suddenly look markedly uncertain. But should any of the those Americans leave to be surrounded by stronger lineups? If so, where can they realistically go?

GOAL US writers discuss it in the latest edition of … The Rondo.

Getty Images SportWhat does Milan’s UCL failure mean for Pulisic? Does he have to leave?

Tom Hindle: Well, it's not really a good look, is it? Pulisic can't win every game for Milan, and he certainly looks a little tired. But let's be honest: he was woeful in both knockout playoff games. Talk all you want about the failure of the players around him – looking at you, Joao Felix – but world class talents take the game by the scruff of the neck. Pulisic sort of floated in and out of it. Not sure that Milan failing to qualify would be catastrophic for him personally. He seems to have found a good fit there, and that's really all that matters. It's also worth pointing out that a new club would mean adaptation, change and more pressure. Milan offer a platform for him to play football every week in a top five league. Don't overthink it.

Jacob Schneider: To be a world-class footballer, you have to be playing at the highest level. If he's not in the UCL next year, that's a problem. Of course, a move away from Milan – where he has settled in so nicely – is not ideal, but if he wants to continue to grow and elevate his game, he might have to.

Ryan Tolmich: He doesn't have to, but it does become something he'll have to consider. If Milan fail to make Europe at all, he'll have to look at all options. But, if Milan finish, say, fifth or sixth and book a spot in Europe, Pulisic will have enough reason to stay and continue being the top guy for Milan – that's if he is truly happy enough with the club and in the city, as he has indicated is the case. It all comes down to his own happiness because, considering the road he's traveled to get here, that's paramount.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportIf not Milan, where does Pulisic go?

TH: Tough to say. If we're honest, he's a level below most of the absolutely elite clubs. He doesn't get into Barcelona or Real Madrid's side (insert joke about Barca having no money.) Milan won't sell him to a Serie A rival. PSG probably want to put all of their chips on the exciting Bradley Barcola. Bayern Munich already have 10,000 wide players. The Premier League is perhaps where it gets interesting – and it depends who qualifies for Europe.

If you'd have to pick, the most intriguing proposition might be Arsenal. Gabriel Martinelli has been off the pace for some time now, and Pulisic offers the same kind of dribbling ability with an extra creative streak out wide that the Gunners have been missing on the left wing. The question is: would the immense transfer fee make sense for a club that needs to spend big on a striker? Probably not. But in a hypothetical world, thiswould be loads of fun.

JS: He needs to go somewhere where he can play both LW and the 10 position, because his versatility has become an important trait in Italy. There's been reports that Liverpool are interested, but the strength of EPL defenders often saw him fall out of favor at Chelsea. Is a return to England beneficial? A potential dream option would be Bayern Munich in Germany. He could be a brilliant player playing off of Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane, with Michael Olise opposite.

RT: Realistically, it's hard to figure out a logical spot. He's in a weird place where he's at that level just below the elite, which rules out several of the world's top teams. After those teams are out, Pulisic is worth way more to Milan than most teams in that next level would be willing to pay. It's a tenuous limbo, one which makes a Milan stay seem a bit more likely – even if everything does come crashing down. In reality, it would be great to see Pulisic leap to a better team such as Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern, but those teams likely won't come calling. Maybe some of the other heavy-hitters will, but it's hard to find one that would make sense at the moment.

AFPWhat about McKennie and Weah?

TH: Once again, it's not great. It's always good to test yourself at the highest level, and seeing both of them knocked out isn't wonderful, at least from a USMNT POV. Champions League football for that duo specifically is less important. They just need to play. McKennie clearly has a role at Juve. Weah, less so, and might want to leave, anyway.

JS: Weah and McKennie are not at the level of Pulisic. If they play in the UEL in 2025, so be it – that's still a good competitive level for them, and it's become evident that Thiago Motta adores Weston, and trusts Tim. That's a good thing, and you shouldn't abandon it just yet.

RT: Again, these are tough choices. You wouldn't blame either for moving on, and you wouldn't blame either for staying. For McKennie, there might be a bit more pressure given the options in the USMNT midfield, but there is still some juice that comes from even a Europa League version of Juventus. For Weah, the most important thing is getting playing time and, ultimately, contributing in the attack. If he can find that elsewhere, that's a move he'd have to consider.

AFPIs it important for Americans to play in Champions League?

TH: In an ideal world, every top footballer should be testing themselves at the highest level every week. It's how you get better. And it definitely looks good to have as many U.S. nationals in the fray as possible. But peer over the USMNT roster, and how many are truly good enough to be consistent starters for the top UCL teams? Half, on a good day? Pulisic, McKennie, Ricardo Pepi are probably the only three absolute locks. Weah, Gio Reyna and Musah are all borderline. Sergino Dest is a question mark, when healthy. The point is here that the priority should be to play football, period.

JS: Depending on the player, it is very, very important. Pulisic needs it more than anyone, but it's beneficial for all players of course. Compete against the best, test yourself and grow. If the U.S. wants to become a world powerhouse on the international stage, though, it's almost become a must.

RT: From an optics point of view, it's very important. Everyone loves those records for American appearances, goals or wins in the Champions League, and they all add more legitimacy to the U.S. game. That's the macro level. On the micro level, it's important, but not the end all be all. There are so many factors at play in Europe: fit, finances, playing time, tactics, coaching and, of course, European competition. It's one of many selling points of a club but, for example, playing in the Champions League with a C-league team is not the same as competing in a top-five league week in, week out. It's all more nuanced than that, though, as each individual figures out their own path.

Major "positive news" on Liverpool contract talks with Virgil van Dijk

Reliable journalist James Pearce has now provided a major update regarding the future of Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk at Anfield.

Van Dijk's Liverpool future

The Reds have made a wonderful start to life under new head coach Arne Slot, sitting top of the Premier League table after winning seven of their opening eight fixtures in the competition this season. Despite there being a huge amount of positivity on show at Anfield currently, there are lingering concerns over the futures of Van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah – all three Liverpool superstars are out of contract at the end of this season and none have signed extensions yet.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

Van Dijk may now be 33 years of age, but there are no signs of him slowing down at all, with the Reds skipper arguably standing out as his side’s best player so far this season, perhaps alongside compatriot Ryan Gravenberch.

The Dutchman remains possibly the leading centre-back in world football, which many have felt has been the case for the last five or six years, so the thought of Liverpool losing him next summer is something that doesn’t bear thinking about for supporters. Now, a big update has dropped regarding the next step in his career.

Pearce drops fresh Van Dijk claim at Liverpool

According to Pearce on X, there is “positive news” regarding Van Dijk’s future at Liverpool, with “discussions” over an extension now taking place.

This is massive news from a Liverpool perspective, with Van Dijk already a legendary Reds player, but also having plenty of years still left in him at the top level.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk

As mentioned, the Netherlands captain has been near-perfect for the Reds this season, starting every single minute in the league and averaging 5.4 clearances and 3.9 aerial duel wins per game. Meanwhile, Slot is under no illusions as to how important keeping hold of Van Dijk is.

“We all see how good he still is and how much he contributes to our offensive style. What you don’t see, and I do see, is how important he is in the training sessions.

“He is the most loud and he brings a lot of energy and quality into the sessions. What you see at the weekends is what I also see during the week and that is what you want to see. He is definitely our leader.”

This latest update suggests that Van Dijk looks more likely to sign a new deal than leave Liverpool, which has to be seen as a massive positive. Now, it’s a case of the same happening with Alexander-Arnold and Salah, with the trio all more important than any new signings.

Sunderland seal off-field deal for "impressive" 38 y/o; Speakman’s buzzing

Sunderland have bolstered Regis Le Bris’ backroom team with a significant appointment, with reliable journalist Dominic Shaw sharing the update.

Sunderland make strong Championship start under Le Bris

The Black Cats couldn’t have asked for a much better start to the season in the Championship, with Le Bris’ men finding themselves right in the automatic promotion mix, sitting top of the table.

Sunderland have won six of their nine matches to date in the league, only suffering two defeats, and they have played some sparkling football along the way, with star youngsters such as Chris Rigg, Jobe Bellingham and Eliezer Mayenda catching the eye, among others.

Le Bris has come straight in as manager and hit the ground running, making his presence felt and steering his side to many good results, and the big test is whether his young squad can last the course of a long 46-game season in the Championship, especially as fatigue and pressure kick in during the latter months of the campaign.

While the manager will no doubt be delighted with how things are going, he will be aware of having the strongest backroom team to work alongside, taking pressure off him and allowing others to provide their input on team matters. A massive appointment has now been confirmed in that respect.

Sunderland appoint new assistant head coach

As reported by The Northern Echo‘s Shaw, Sunderland have appointed Pedro Ribeiro as their new assistant head coach, with sporting director Kristjaan Speakman buzzing, feeling the 38-year-old is the “right candidate” for the job and saying:

“We are delighted to welcome Pedro to Sunderland. We’ve been diligent and patient in identifying the right candidate for this role to ensure we build on the excellent progress we are making.

“Pedro has an impressive set of experiences. He can use these to provide an alternative perspective, but importantly he is aligned to our values and playing identity. We wish him the best of luck and look forward to helping him settle into his new role.”

The report states that the former Porto, Olympiakos and Fenehbace coach “will join Mike Dodds as Le Bris’ assistant head coach, with Michael Proctor to continue in his role as first team coach and Alessandro Barcherini as head of goalkeeping”. It goes on to add that the Black Cats “have spoken to a whole host of assistant head coach candidates since Le Bris’ summer arrival but were happy to be patient to ensure any new addition was the right fit on Wearside.”

Regis Le Bris for Lorient.

This is a very exciting appointment for Sunderland, with Ribeiro a young coach with fresh ideas, but also a hugely experienced figure with 19 years of coaching under his belt. The Portuguese has also been a manager in the past, enjoying spells at the likes of Belenenses SAD, FC Penafiel, Academico Viseu and Leixoes in his homeland, which can only bode well in terms of him being a strong lieutenant to Le Bris.

Sunderland need to be looking at every possible advantage in their quest to seal promotion from the Premier League to the Championship, and bringing in someone with the ability and nous of Ribeiro can only be a good thing.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Britain’s richest man has, after seeing his INEOS group acquire a stake in the Red Devils that grants them control of football operations, been busy implementing cost-cutting measures since filling a seat on the board at Old Trafford.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

That process has been widely condemned, by supporters and former players, with United’s hierarchy accused of ripping the heart out of the club and passing ever-growing debts on to a loyal fan base that has been given little to shout about on the field of late.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

MUST are now calling on Ratcliffe to implement a "major reset of relations between fans and the club", citing “performances on the field amongst the worst in decades”. They are reacting to mid-season ticket price hikes, with the threat of more to come.

    WHAT THE SUPPORTERS TRUST SAID

Ratcliffe and Co have been told that bold decisions are being made at the "worst possible time", with part of the angry reading: "As you consider forthcoming decisions on match ticketing policies and pricing, we urge you to pause and carefully reflect on the timing, potential consequences, and long-term impact of any major changes.

"Judging by your own public comments it seems you may have come to the conclusion that ticket pricing and policies are in need of a major review. However, we strongly believe that now is the worst possible time to implement significant changes. With the team struggling on the pitch and fan sentiment already at a low ebb, we all need to pull together to lift the team’s performance, not risk deepening divisions or creating further dissatisfaction."

Man Utd flop sold for £3m has now outperforming Rashford & Antony

It would be fair to say that after a promising first season under Erik ten Hag, Manchester United were disappointingly poor last season, at least in the Premier League anyway.

Now, there were some mitigating circumstances for the Red Devils' turgid performances, such as injuries, but after the first three games of this season, it looks like it could be another brutal campaign for the United faithful.

There are some undeniably talented players at the club, and this summer's transfer business is encouraging, but there are just too many stars who are out of form, stars like Casemiro, Marcus Rashford, and Antony.

In fact, those last two were so underwhelming last season, that they were outperformed by a former United flop who left for a pittance almost a decade ago.

Rashford and Antony's 23/24

Now, considering United finished in eighth place last season despite producing the 15th-worst underlying numbers in the competition, per Understat, it might seem a bit harsh to talk about Rashford and Antony as particularly disappointing, but there are reasons.

For the Englishman, it's about how inconsistent he has become. Only the season prior, he racked up a frankly ludicrous tally of 30 goals and 11 assists in 56 matches, only to follow that up with a haul of eight goals and six assists in 43 appearances.

That means the Manchester-born star went from averaging a goal involvement every 1.36 games in 22/23 to averaging one every 3.07 games last season, and as he hasn't scored or assisted a goal yet this season, it's looking like his form is set to continue.

Manchester United's Marcus Rashford.

In the case of the Brazilian, his lacklustre form last season was disappointing as some sections of the fanbase and media were hoping that after his first campaign in the country, he'd kick on and show the league why the club spent around £81m to secure his services.

Unfortunately, he didn't even get close to doing that and ended the year with a dreadful tally of three goals and two assists in 38 matches, equating to a dismal average of a goal involvement once every 7.6 games.

In all, both wingers have a mountain to climb this season to prove their doubters wrong, especially as a former United flop who struggled himself at points last season outperformed them both.

Wilfried Zaha's recent form

Yes, the United flop in question is former Premier League star Wilfried Zaha, who moved to United for around £15m in 2013, only to be sold back to Crystal Palace a couple of years later for £3m and with just four appearances to his name.

At the time, it looked like he was going to be just another failed wonderkid, but back in South London, the Abidjan-born winger showed the rest of the league that he was the real deal, and by the time he left Selhurst Park last summer to join Galatasaray, he had racked up 90 goals and 62 assists in 458 appearances.

The 31-year-old made his move to Turkey to fulfil a lifelong ambition of playing in the Champions League, and not only did he achieve it, but he did so with a goal at Old Trafford – it was always going to happen.

However, he didn't fully settle in Istanbul and moved to French giants Lyon on loan last month, yet even though his time in the Turkish capital didn't go precisely to plan, he still managed to produce ten goals and five assists in 42 matches, meaning he was far more productive than Antony and ever so slightly more productive than Rashford.

Now, the massive caveat here is that the Süper Lig obviously represents a lower level of opposition than the Premier League, but given Zaha's form for Palace for 22/23, we do not doubt that he could still offer something to a top-flight team in England this season.

Ultimately, though, his departure from United all those years ago was probably in the best interest of all parties, and while Rashford isn't at his best at the moment, he has the quality to get back there, although we aren't so sure about Antony.
