David Lloyd double-century puts Glamorgan in command against Derbyshire

A career-best double-century for Glamorgan captain David Lloyd put his side in the driving seat in this third vs fourth clash.Glamorgan finished the first day on 380 for 3, gaining four batting bonus points, with Lloyd on 203 not out, his second century coming off just 101 balls as Derbyshire’s bowlers toiled.Glamorgan first class debutant Tom Bevan offered good support with 48 in a century partnership which set the platform, while Billy Root made the most of a move up the order to No. 5 by contributing 77 not out in a partnership of 197.Derbyshire needed a win to overtake Glamorgan and stay in contention for promotion going into the final round of fixtures, but now find themselves with their backs against the wall with the Welsh County looking to push on to a huge first-innings total.Glamorgan were without India’s Shubman Gill with a heavy cold, while they also brought in off spinner Andrew Salter for all-rounder Kiran Carlson. Derbyshire gave a debut to South Wales-born paceman Adam Sylvester.Related

With a winner between these sides having a chance to challenge second-placed Middlesex in the final round of matches, Lloyd’s day did not start so well when he lost the toss and was asked to bat on a pitch which had a greenish tinge.Three balls later and Derbyshire had lost opening bowler Ben Aitchison with a rolled ankle, which made the decision to bowl seem a little unfortunate. He did return to bowl one more over, and fielded at slip, but his future fitness in the game is doubtful.Anuj Dal took over the rest of that over and also made the first breakthrough, getting opener Ed Byrom caught behind.Bevan made his first class debut having made his breakthrough this season with a century against Hampshire in the Royal London Cup.He was slower than Lloyd at the other end, but also showed enough promise to mark him out as one for the future. While he has helped steer local side St Fagans to the South Wales Premier League title this season, he is likely to be otherwise engaged next year.He would have been disappointed to miss out on a half-century, attempting to get there in style hitting across the line at spinner Alex Thomson and skying the ball instead.Sam Northeast looked comfortable until he was clean bowled out of the blue with Luis Reece getting the ball to move off the seam. While wickets fell at the other end, Lloyd got better and better. Having moved to his half-century just before lunch, he moved to three figures comfortably before tea, no sign of nerves about his first hundred of the season as he smashed the ball aerially through mid on off Thomson to bring up the landmark. His previous highest score this season was 84, his average in the mid 20s with the allrounder having moved to regularly opening the batting.Soon after tea he surpassed his career-best score of 121 and carried on past 150, with Root offering steady support in another century partnership. Root moved to his half-century off 94 balls as the run rate increased with the second new ball.

Pooran: West Indies must 'believe that we can fight'

West Indies’ white-ball captain Nicholas Pooran has called for greater fight and game awareness from his players, irrespective of the conditions, after they were recently swept 3-0 by Bangladesh at the Providence.”As a group we felt like in international cricket 9.30 [am] games, you can’t control certain things. For us I felt the biggest learning is believe that we can fight – doesn’t matter the conditions,” Pooran said on the eve of the ODI series opener against India.”We need to assess as players really quickly and understand that if it’s difficult for us, it’s difficult for the opposition as well. For us as a batting group, we need to hang in there as long as possible in tough conditions and tough times and believe that whatever we got is respectable and gives us a chance in the game.”That’s the most we can ask of ourselves. I think Guyana was challenging for us, but we still learnt a lot being there as a group, coming from Pakistan as well, then into the Bangladesh series…the results wasn’t in our favour, but as a new group this is our challenge.”Related

  • 'Doing things together' key to the Shikhar Dhawan way

  • Hosein, Motie and Seales among notable talents who could challenge India

The challenge will only get stiffer against India although the visitors are missing several of their frontline players, but Pooran embraced it and lauded his team for their willingness to learn from the errors made against Bangladesh.”As I always tell the guys, no story ever starts well and it has started so for us in ODI cricket,” he said. “But I believe in the guys and believe in the talent that we have here and willingness of the guys to learn. Everyone wants to get better; everyone is asking questions. Everyone is asking how to get better and that’s something I admire from the guys so far coming from the Bangladesh series. We’re just looking forward to some things going our way because the guys have been putting in a lot of work and we’re looking forward to this India series to correct some rights and wrongs.”The forthcoming series against India is not part of the Super League, and West Indies have lurched from one defeat to another in ODI cricket of late, but Pooran insisted that they aren’t lacking any motivation to turn things around.2:14

Simmons: We need to win for the Caribbean people

“I think all the players are motivated and everyone wants to do well, which is really fantastic to see,” he said. “I don’t have to do too much to be honest. We just need to have really good conversation and believe in each other and continue to back our skills. I think the guys are gelling really well at the moment.”Pooran echoed head coach Phil Simmons’ comments in saying West Indies’ first goal in ODI cricket is to find a way to bat out 50 overs. He also wanted to hold his judgement on the batters and see how they fare on a Port-of-Spain pitch that is likely to be conducive to run-scoring.”Not only from my side but from a coaching side as well, our focus it to balance ODI cricket between T20 cricket and Test cricket,” Pooran said. “I think we haven’t found the right template yet and everyone can see that. We’re not batting 50 overs and that’s the first box we want to tick.”At the moment, when you ask me what brand of cricket we want to play in ODI cricket it’s difficult to say yet. For example, if you want to play aggressive cricket, it’s difficult to play aggressive cricket in tough conditions. So, for us, it’s all about finding ways to bat 50 overs – it doesn’t matter how we bat 50 overs – but I believe conditions do play a part in how we play our cricket.”For us, it’s ticking one box at a time and one step at a time. I believe that in T20 cricket we’re starting to know what kind of cricket we want to play; in Test cricket same thing, but the more games we play as an ODI unit I think we’re going to get better and a lot of the guys are going to have more games under their belt and they can have more experience and confidence as well. It will be nice if I can answer this question maybe after the New Zealand series, going by conditions and how guys react to certain situations as well.”Hetmyer working on fitness
Batter Shimron Hetmyer has linked up with the West Indies squad in Port-of-Spain, but Pooran made it clear that he isn’t available for selection for the ODI series. He is currently working with the coaching staff on his fitness, having missed out on West Indies’ recent squads on those grounds. Hetmyer last played international cricket for West Indies in November 2021.”Obviously, would love for him to be in this ODI series, but obviously he’s been doing a lot of work on his fitness and he has been putting in a lot of work,” Pooran said. “He wants to play for West Indies; the trainers and the coaches are working with him, so expect him to play sooner or later. I think he has a fitness test to pass shortly and so he’s preparing for that.”

Liverpool want to use Slot connection in hijack for "fantastic" £50m star

Looking towards 2025 and potential reinforcements, Liverpool now reportedly want to use Arne Slot’s Dutch connections to hijack a £50m+ signing who could replace Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool transfer news

Although things are going smoothly on the pitch, there’s still every chance that Liverpool have their season overshadowed by three major exits. As things stand, Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all set to depart as free agents at the end of the current campaign in what would be the Reds’ worst nightmares. And whilst reports have been more positive surrounding Van Dijk and Salah’s Anfield futures, it remains a guessing game on the Alexander-Arnold front.

On all three cases, the Reds must prepare for the worst, which has seen the likes of Jeremie Frimpong already linked with a move to Anfield and now a winger who could replace Salah.

Manchester United transfer target Jeremie Frimpong in action for Bayer Leverkusen.

According to Caught Offside, Liverpool now want to use Slot’s Dutch connection in a hijack to sign Johan Bakayoko ahead of Newcastle United in 2025. The current Liverpool boss would have had the chance to take a closer look at the young PSV Eindhoven winger just last season, of course, when he was in charge of Feyenoord.

Why RB Leipzig are now worried about Xavi Simons after Liverpool approach

He’s been tipped to have a “really good career at the highest level”.

ByBarney Lane Dec 13, 2024

Now, Slot could revisit the Eredivisie and bring back a potential replacement for Salah. Valued at a reported €60m (£52m), the deal for Bakayoko certainly won’t come cheap, but Liverpool have splashed the cash in the past and could yet do so once more when 2025 arrives – beating Newcastle, Bayern Munich and others to the PSV star’s signature as a result.

"Fantastic" Bakayoko is one to watch

Replacing Salah will be mission impossible for whoever is handed the task and whenever that will be, but Bakayoko is certainly an interesting candidate. Still just 21 years old, the Belgian has already scored six goals and assisted a further three in all competitions for PSV in what follows last season’s stunning total of 14 goals and 14 assists by the end of the campaign.

The potential is certainly there for all to see, including Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig, who described Bakayoko’s run of form last season as “fantastic” and dubbed the Belgian “the best winger in the Netherlands”.

At a reported £52m though, it’s likely that the Reds wait until the summer and on Salah’s contract situation to potentially make their move and use Slot’s Dutch connection to sign Bakayoko.

John Simpson scores unbeaten century as Middlesex take stranglehold

Visiting bowlers deserve credit too as Glamorgan face heavy defeat in Cardiff

ECB Reporters Network22-Apr-2022

John Simpson built an imposing lead for Middlesex•Getty Images

Middlesex took a stranglehold on their LV= Insurance County Championship match against Glamorgan in Cardiff as the home side finished 104 for 6 in their second innings, still 110 runs behind. An undefeated John Simpson hundred and a fifty from Toby Roland-Jones meant that Middlesex made 336 all out to give them a 214-run lead on first innings.James Harris finished with the best bowling figures for Glamorgan, claiming 4 for 68 against his former county. When it was Glamorgan’s turn to bat things unfolded much as they had in their first innings with the top order failing once again in the face of some excellent Middlesex bowling.Simpson batted brilliantly with the tail as Middlesex added 226 runs for their last four wickets. The pitch had looked very lively on day one of this match but had flattened out some as day two wore on. The Glamorgan bowlers struggled to keep things tight as Simpson and the tailenders took the game away from them.Roland-Jones reached his fifty from 62 balls as he continued to attack the Glamorgan bowlers at the start of day two. When he was dismissed by Harris for 62 his partnership with Simpson was worth 103.The punishment didn’t end for Glamorgan when Roland-Jones departed as first Tom Helm and then Shaheen Shah Afridi continued to plunder runs. Afridi made a career-best 29 in what is becoming a Middlesex debut to remember. To sum up how badly things went for Glamorgan with the ball, the three highest partnerships of this match so far have been for the seventh, eighth and ninth Middlesex wickets. The Glamorgan seamers toiled away fruitlessly and it was left to Marnus Labuschagne to finish off the Middlesex innings, claiming the last two wickets with his leg breaks.Glamorgan started brightly enough with David Lloyd looking to be positive but when both he and Andrew Salter were bowled in quick succession it had a very similar feel to the home side’s disappointing first innings.Labuschagne was driving brilliantly as he caressed five balls to the boundary, but as in the first innings it was Afridi who had his measure, a fuller ball trapping the Australian lbw for 23.Kiran Carson, Chris Cooke and Callum Taylor all went in the space of nine runs to leave Glamorgan 78 for 6 and in danger of losing the game inside two days. A partnership worth 26 between Sam Northeast and Michael Neser took Glamorgan passt three figures and the game into a third day, but there is a lot of work to do on Saturday to try and prevent anything other than a heavy defeat. While there have been some poor shots, credit must be given to the Middlesex bowlers who were once again consistent and incisive, they and Simpson have put their side in a brilliant position.

This season, UEFA introduced a rule granting two additional Champions League spots to the leagues with the best collective performance in European competitions. These extra spots are determined based on the coefficient rankings, which track results across the Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League. With France now out of the equation, the race for these coveted slots is narrowed down to just four leagues – England, Spain, Italy, and Germany.

DID YOU KNOW?

Despite Manchester City and Liverpool exiting the Champions League, English clubs remain well-represented across all European competitions. Arsenal and Aston Villa have both progressed and if they continue their runs, they could meet in a potential semi-final showdown. Meanwhile, Manchester United and Tottenham are still competing in the Europa League, but since they are in separate brackets, they cannot eliminate each other before the final. This ensures that England will continue to rack up valuable coefficient points regardless of their progress.

Vice-captain backs Odean Smith to find form after Shepherd-Hosein fall just short

Nicholas Pooran defended West Indies’ selection and praised Romario Shepherd and Akeal Hosein after their late hitting gave England a fright in Barbados.West Indies slipped to 65 for 7 and 98 for 8 in pursuit of 172 in the second T20I at Kensington Oval, but Shepherd and Hosein put on 72 runs in just 29 balls for the ninth wicket to take them to a one-run defeat.”Akeal and Shepherd have been working really hard on their batting,” Pooran, the vice-captain, said. “We know in our team we have a long list of hitters.”We saw something special from Akeal and Shepherd tonight. Kudos goes to them, they didn’t give up at all, but that goes to show the strength in our team. Tonight was their night, we lost the game by two runs [sic], but the next night someone else can turn up to the party.”Not only tonight but in the Ireland series, [Hosein] proved that he is a capable batsman and tonight he struck the ball as good as anyone. We always give him some thunder that he’s batting No. 11 for us but he keeps proving to us that he’s a batsman. I’m happy for him: he’s working really hard, not only as a bowler but as a batsman as well.”Related

Pooran also defended the selection of Odean Smith, the allrounder, whose involvement has been minimal across the first two T20Is due to West Indies’ surfeit of options in their middle order.Smith has bowled a solitary over in the series so far, conceding four runs, and hit 7 off 3 balls from No. 8 on Sunday night, but Pooran said that Kieron Pollard’s success with the ball meant he had simply not been required.”He’s playing as a power-hitter,” Pooran said. “He’s a special player and we back him all the way to come out and execute his skills for us. In saying that, we have batsmen who we know have to put our hands up and make runs in crucial positions and in crucial situations.”At the end of the day we back each and every one in our team here. We’re not playing Odean Smith as a bowler. He’s an allrounder, he just played the Ireland series and batted really well as well. We back everyone in our team to play their role.”The captain came on and bowled in crucial times, bowling crucial overs. In all honesty, he bowled an over yesterday and today he wasn’t required. If you see the scores, Pollard bowled those four overs really well today.”Moeen Ali, whose all-round contributions earned him the player-of-the-match award, described West Indies’ side as “extremely dangerous” and admitted that England had been given a scare.”Even though they were 50 [55] for 5, six or seven down for not many runs, they were never quite out of the game,” Moeen said. “They’re such a dangerous team. I know a lot of older players have retired and stuff but they’ve got so much talent, so much power.”The fact they bat all the way down to No. 10 makes them extremely dangerous, even in the situation where we thought we were going to cruise that game. For them to lose by one run, it’s actually quite scary. Their batting line-up is very scary.”

Why Cheikhou Kouyate’s Leeds move collapsed

A deal for Leeds United to sign free agent Cheikhou Kouyate collapsed for different reasons than what has been reported previously, according to a new update. The Whites are enduring an injury crisis, as Daniel Farke has not been able to call upon several of his key first-teamers for a few weeks now, and he now looks keen to enter the free agent market to ease his squad worries.

Leeds United chasing free agent signing

Leeds are keen to bolster their options in the midfield department, as injuries to Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev have left the Championship side extremely short in that department of the team. The Yorkshire outfit are able to sign a player who is currently a free agent, and they have had their eye on three possible options.

Christoph Kramer has been training with Leeds recently in a bid for the German to earn a contract at the club. The midfielder has been without a home since leaving Borussia Mönchengladbach at the end of last season, and last week it was reported he was training at Thorp Arch.

Christoph Kramer against Borussia Monchengladbach.

Leeds are also considering signing Josuha Guilavogui, who used to play for Wolfsburg and Atlético Madrid. He is one of several players that the club is looking at, and the midfielder was even spotted with a fan after the Whites’ win over Sheffield United last Friday. The 34-year-old has been a free agent since being released by Mainz at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, but has plenty of experience at both international and domestic levels.

Kramer and Guilavogui are not the only names that Leeds have considered, as Cheikhou Kouyate looked to be closing in on a move to Elland Road before a move fell through.

Kouyate deal collapsed due to financial demands

According to TEAMtalk, Cheikhou Kouyate’s move to Leeds United fell through amid concerns over his financial demands. The former Nottingham Forest man has been without a club since leaving the City Ground in the summer, but last week he appeared close to joining the Whites.

It was originally thought that Kouyate failed his Leeds medical and it was the Leeds medical staff who called for the plug to be pulled on a deal, but it seems the issue was actually upstairs.

It has now been claimed that the player’s financial demands were the reason a deal didn’t go through. The 34-year-old has spent the last 10 years playing in England, representing West Ham, Crystal Palace and Forest, so it would be no surprise for his agent to demand top flight level wages and perhaps a signing bonus to boot.

Nottingham Forest tracking 22-year-old gem as possible Danilo replacement

Nottingham Forest had representatives in place for a Championship game on Tuesday night as they took a closer look at a promising midfielder, according to a recent report.

The Reds brought in several new faces during the summer, and that has helped them make a strong start to the Premier League season, losing just one of their opening six games. Despite the good start, it appears as though it could be a busy January for Forest as their transfer plans become a bit clearer.

Nottingham Forest ready to accept "huge" offer for "excellent" £30k-p/w ace

It would be a massive loss for the Garibaldi.

ByBen Browning Sep 29, 2024 Nottingham Forest transfer news

The January transfer window is still quite a bit away from opening, but Forest already have their eye on what business they may like to conclude. It has recently been reported that Forest are interested in signing Luca Koleosho from Burnley.

The Reds are set to be stepping up their interest in the player, with Brighton and Wolves fighting alongside Forest to secure his signature. Forest have taken in live games of Koleosho, and they see him as a player who can add more depth to their attacking line.

It has also been claimed that the Premier League side are also looking to move players on, with Forest said to be ready to cash in on defender Murillo, but only for a big transfer fee. Murillo has been an impressive performer for Forest since joining the club, but they could be willing to sell the player next summer if they receive a huge offer. And they may already be plotting how to spend that money.

Nottingham Forest track new possible Danilo replacement

According to TBR Football, Nottingham Forest scouts were at the Hawthorns on Tuesday night to watch Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney. Boro claimed a 1-0 win over West Brom courtesy of the midfielder’s goal, and it was a chance for Forest to take a look at Hackney, who also has admirers from Aston Villa and Wolves.

Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney.

Hackney has played over 70 games for Boro so far, being rather impressive since making his debut, and that hasn’t changed this season. The midfielder has now scored two goals in eight Championship games this term, and Tuesday night was another impressive display.

The 22-year-old was Middlesbrough’s best performer in the game against the Baggies, according to SofaScore’s player ratings system. Hackney completed 73 of his 84 passes in the game, which gave him an 87% pass accuracy, and eight of nine long balls completed shows he isn’t playing it safe, instead looking to break lines and start attacks. That also aligns with him making five progressive passes in Tuesday night’s game, as he looks to keep getting the ball forward.
