Grant Stewart's belligerent 173* brings Kent back from the brink

Grant Stewart posted a brilliant swashbuckling hundred to inspire a notable Kent fightback on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship match against Gloucestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium in Bristol.Their backs firmly against the wall after being reduced to 137 for 6, the visitors were indebted to the seventh-wicket pair of Stewart and Chris Benjamin, who staged a revitalising unbeaten stand of 249 in 56 overs to rescue a parlous situation. Stewart registered a career-best score of 173 not out from 174 balls with 19 fours and five sixes, while Benjamin contributed a cautious yet chanceless 82 not out, hewn from 212 deliveries with five fours, as Kent reached the close on 386 for 6.Stewart and Benjamin made history in the Bristol sunshine, establishing a record seventh-wicket stand in all matches for Kent, eclipsing the 248 scored by Arthur Day and Punter Humphreys against Somerset at Taunton in 1908. It was a remarkable turnaround in fortunes after Gloucestershire’s bowlers had dominated the first few hours, Ajeet Singh Dale claiming 4 for 97 and Tom Price and Josh Shaw weighing in with a wicket apiece to justify captain Cameron Bancroft’s decision to bowl first. If Kent mindsets were fragile following defeat by an innings and 161 runs at the hands of Glamorgan last time out, Gloucestershire’s bowlers certainly took full advantage. But the visitors will now feel they have the upper hand after Stewart and Benjamin turned the tables in such comprehensive fashion, banking three batting bonus points which had appeared beyond them earlier in the day.Requiring a solid start, Kent achieved exactly the opposite, Harry Finch pursuing Shaw’s second delivery of the day outside leg stump, offering a tame catch to James Bracey behind the stumps and departing for 1. That set the tone, Tom Price sending down four maidens in five overs that yielded just one run as Ben Compton and Daniel Bell-Drummond fought to see off the new ball.Their resistance quickly crumbled in the face of a fiery spell from Singh Dale, who generated impressive pace to remove both in the space of seven balls from the Ashley Down Road end. Bell-Drummond miscued an attempted drive and spooned a catch to mid-on, while Compton, having taken 19 balls to get off the mark and demonstrated no little application in moving his score to 19, drove loosely at a delivery that pitched outside off stump and was pouched by the diving Bracey as Kent slipped to 36 for 3.Jack Leaning never looked comfortable, was squared up by Singh Dale and sent a looping catch to Bancroft at second slip, at which point Singh Dale boasted figures of 3 for 22 from five overs. The only one of Kent’s top-order batters to play with any authority, Tawanda Muyeye raised 25 from 37 deliveries with four fours before edging a ball that nipped off the seam to the reliable Bancroft at second slip, affording Tom Price the wicket his accuracy deserved. In urgent need of a stabilising influence, the visitors were grateful to Benjamin and Jaydn Denly, who ensured they reached lunch without further loss on 85 for 5.Looking to play positively, England Under-19 batsman Denly helped himself to a sumptuous cover-driven four at the expense of Tom Price to signal a change in momentum as Kent’s first innings realised three figures in the 33rd over. Failing to maintain the tight lines that had characterised their work in the morning, Gloucestershire’s seamers were powerless to prevent the sixth wicket pair adding 63 in 15.3 overs.Singh Dale returned to break the partnership, beating Denly for pace with a ball that ricocheted off bat and pad and hit the top of off stump. Denly had mustered 39 from 51 balls and accrued six fours and was just two runs adrift of his highest first-class score when he departed with the board on 137 for 6.Surviving Singh Dale’s second spell, Benjamin and Stewart found the going easier thereafter as the pitch flattened out and the shine disappeared off the ball. Adopting a forthright approach from the outset, Stewart was prepared to take risks and looked to get on the front foot and drive whenever possible. He was first to 50, attaining that landmark via 51 balls as Kent passed 200. The Italy international pulled Graeme van Buuren for six to add to his half dozen fours as the visitors reached the tea interval on a relatively healthy 225 for 6 at the end of a session that had yielded 140 runs for the loss of just one wicket.Adopting a more circumspect approach, the assured Benjamin raised a half century of his own, carefully crafted from 129 balls, as the seventh-wicket alliance continued to prosper into the final session. The hundred partnership occupied 177 balls, at which point Bancroft recalled the talismanic Singh Dale. Although he went past the bat on several occasions, the 24-year-old paceman was unable to provide the breakthrough Gloucestershire coveted.Strong off his legs, Stewart positively rushed to the second first-class hundred of his career, edging Zaman Akhter to the fine leg boundary to raise three figures via 120 balls with his twelfth four. He hooked the next ball to deep midwicket and was caught by Tom Price, only for the unbalanced fielder to step over the rope and concede a six, an act which saw Stewart improve upon his previous highest score of 103 made against Middlesex at Canterbury in 2018.Gloucestershire took the new ball as soon as it became available, but were unable to curtail Stewart’s lusty hitting, the 31-year-old by now scoring at better than a run a ball to progress to his maiden 150 from 152 deliveries as Kent reached the close resurgent. Stewart and Benjamin had already set a new record seventh wicket partnership for Kent in matches against Gloucestershire, surpassing the unbeaten 151 posted by Derek Ufton and Alan Dixon at the Mount in 1960.

Earlier, England A had been bowled out for 407, a lead of 64, with Paige Scholfield converting her overnight 138 to an innings of 164 before she edged Tess Flintoff to Nicole Faltum midway through the morning session, shortly after overhauling Australia A’s first innings of 343.Jodi Grewcock had already top-edged a pull to fine leg off Maitlan Brown to fall for 32, and England pushed their total past 400 thanks to some handy contributions from the tail, not least Georgia Davis, who was last out for 23 as she drove a return catch to give Lilly Mills her second wicket of the innings. In reply, Australia A started confidently through Tahlia Wilson and Maddy Darke, who added 32 for the first wicket before Darke pulled Alexa Stonehouse to Grace Potts at fine leg for 18.Wilson then fell with Australia still in arrears, as she cut Potts to Scholfield at point, and when Anika Learoyd missed a sweep off Mady Villiers to be pinned lbw for 29, England sensed a chance to turn the screw at 110 for 3.Trenaman and Knott, however, backed up their first-innings efforts, to leave everything to play for going into the final day on Tuesday.

Magassa upgrade: West Ham make contact to sign "box-crashing" midfielder

There is less than a week until the transfer window closes, and West Ham United still have plenty of work to do.

Graham Potter’s side have made a few exciting signings this summer, like El Hadji Malick Diouf and Kyle Walker-Peters, but as the last few games have shown, they need plenty more.

Moreover, while he ultimately underwhelmed during his time at the club, Edson Alvarez is now in Turkey, which has only made the Hammers’ need for midfield reinforcements that much more acute.

Luckily, they appear to be closing in on a deal for Soungoutou Magassa and, if reports are to be believed, they’re also making moves to bring in someone who’d be an even better signing.

West Ham United target better signing than Magassa

While their interest in Magassa likely stretches back further, reports of West Ham’s desire to sign the Frenchman started to emerge late last week.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Impressively, the Hammers have moved unusually quickly to secure the services of the AS Monaco ace, as he underwent his medical with the club yesterday and could be announced before the end of this week.

The 21-year-old looks like he’ll be a great addition to Potter’s squad, but it now looks like the East Londoners are already moving on to new targets, including someone who is even better than Magassa.

Paris St Germain's Ousmane Dembele in action with AS Monaco's SoungoutouMagassa

At least that is according to Graeme Bailey, who has claimed that West Ham are interested in Exequiel Palacios.

In fact, the journalist has revealed that the Irons have already made contact with Bayer Leverkusen to discuss a deal for the incredible Argentine.

Interestingly, while it is not clear how much the £83k-per-week ace would cost the club, the report states he could be available on loan, which makes him an even more enticing prospect.

It could still be a complicated deal to get over the line, but Palacios would be more than worth it, especially as he’s better than Magassa.

How Palacios compares to Magassa

It should be made clear that both Magassa and Palacios would be excellent signings for West Ham this summer, but there are a few reasons the latter would be that little bit better.

Exequiel Palacios for Bayer Leverkusen.

The first is his impressive experience, as, at 26 years old, he has spent far more time playing at the highest level and exceeding there.

For example, the Famaillá-born maestro has made 160 appearances for Leverkusen, 87 for River Plate and won 36 senior caps for Argentina.

Moreover, he has a genuinely spectacular trophy cabinet that includes a Bundesliga, a DFB-Pokal, two Argentine Cups, the Copa Libertadores, two Copa América titles, and a World Cup.

In contrast, the 21-year-old Monaco star has just an Olympic silver medal to his name, and while that may well change in time, he won’t be able to bring the same winning experience to the London Stadium.

The second, and arguably the most meaningful, reason the Leverkusen star would be the better signing this summer is that, when we take a look under the hood at their underlying numbers, he comes out on top in most relevant statistics.

These metrics include things like expected and actual non-penalty goals plus assists, key passes, shots, shot and goal-creating actions, passing accuracy, and so many more, all per 90.

In other words, while he might not be quite as defensively solid as the Frenchman, the “box-crashing” Leverkusen star, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, is an all-action midfielder who is as much of a goalscoring threat as a creative one.

Ultimately, West Ham should sign both Magassa and Palacios to give themselves the best chance of making this season a success; however, for our money, the latter would be the better addition of the two.

Their new Rice: West Ham now exploring move for £17m star after Magassa

When it comes to the greatest players to have donned West Ham United’s famous Claret and Blue in recent history, it’s hard to look past Declan Rice.

The England international joined the club as a teenager and worked his way into the first team before eventually being given the captain’s armband, which he wore as the club won the Conference League in 2023.

At his best, the 26-year-old was a combative number six who was a nightmare to get past, but had in his locker what was, at the time, a hugely underrated passing ability and a sensational left foot.

In all, Rice is one of the best players to have represented West Ham in the modern era, even if his decision to join a fellow London side might have broken a few hearts.

Therefore, fans should be delighted with reports linking the club to a powerful midfield star who has been likened to the Arsenal star.

West Ham target their new Rice

The part of the team West Ham are most in need of reinforcing before the window closes next week is the midfield, and it looks like they’re going to do just that.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

For example, reports suggest that the club have had an offer for Southampton’s Mateus Fernandes accepted today, and AS Monaco’s Soungoutou Magassa is set for a medical.

Yet, the Hammers might not be done there, as they’re being linked with another midfield star who could become their new Rice.

Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen for West Ham

At least that is according to a recent report from Sky Sports News, which has claimed West Ham are interested in Aleix Garcia.

The report has revealed that the Bayer Leverkusen star is on a list of players the Irons are interested in this summer.

A potential price for the player is not mentioned in the report, but stories from earlier this week claimed that a fee of €20m, which is about £17m, would be enough to tempt the German side into selling.

At that price, signing the talented and experienced Garcia seems like a no-brainer for West Ham, especially as he’s been compared to Rice.

How Garcia compares to Rice

In this instance, the comparison between Garcia and Rice stems from FBref, which looked at players in similar positions from Europe’s top five leagues and concluded that the Arsenal ace has been the eighth most similar midfielder to the 28-year-old over the last 365 days.

We can gain a better understanding of how this conclusion was reached by examining the underlying metrics in which the pair ranks closely.

In other words, like the Hammers’ former captain, the Spaniard is a defensively solid midfielder who is more than comfortable contributing to the attacking side of the game.

The “outstanding” ace, as dubbed by Pep Guardiola, is capable of initiating attacks through his impressive passing ability, as exemplified by his key passes.

Finally, another strength of the “technically gifted” Spaniard, as dubbed by analyst Ben Mattinson, that he shares with the Englishman is his ability to play in multiple midfield roles, from a defensive six to a box-crashing eight, and on occasion even further up the pitch.

Ultimately, while he might not be a household name among Premier League fans, West Ham should do all they can to sign Garcia before the window slams shut, especially as he could be their new Rice.

Stars shine in Melbourne derby after Cartwright heroics

Duckett and Stoinis also put in a show in chase of Renegades’ 168

Tristan Lavalette04-Jan-2025Melbourne Stars 171 for 5 (Duckett 67, Stoinis 48, Sandhu 3-29) beat Melbourne Renegades 168 for 7 (Bethell 49, Wells 45, Paris 2-23) by five wicketsHilton Cartwright stepped up with belligerent hitting in a tense final over after Ben Duckett and Marcus Stoinis had chased superbly on a tricky MCG surface as Stars claimed the bragging rights over Renegades in a gripping Melbourne derby.Chasing 169, Stars were in trouble at 41 for 3 before Duckett and Stoinis combined for an 83-run partnership. They appeared to be cruising needing 57 runs off 42 but lost Duckett and Stoinis quickly as Stars’ nerves set in.It came down to the final over with Stars needing ten runs and well positioned with Cartwright and Glenn Maxwell at the crease. But quick Tom Rogers executed two superb yorkers to start the over and suddenly Stars required eight off the final four balls. But Cartwright launched a massive six into the second tier over long on before swatting another boundary on the next delivery to ensure Stars kept their finals hopes alive with a second straight victory.Stars moved to a 17-10 overall record against a slumping Renegades (2-4) in the first match played on the ground since the Boxing Day Test.Duckett, Stoinis combine before Cartwright’s heroicsDuckett has been feast or famine during this BBL season. Two half-centuries were countered by two ducks and it was a relief when he got off the mark. The pressure was on Duckett who had been involved in a horrible mix-up that saw Sam Harper run-out following the early wicket of Thomas Rogers. He started to get on a roll towards the end of the powerplay as he pounced on short-pitched bowling and also executed the ramp shot several times to perfection.Duckett found a willing partner in Stoinis, who attacked legspinner Adam Zampa in the middle overs with several muscular blows that rattled the boundaries. They appeared to be doing it easily until the late twist. But Cartwright and Maxwell combined for four sixes to ice a hard earned victory.Snicko controversyOnce again this summer, snicko was in the eye of a storm after Dan Lawrence was adjudged caught behind down the legside. After Renegades reviewed the not out decision, it seemed inconclusive on Snicko whether the ball brushed the bat or thigh pad. After several replays, third umpire Simon Lightbody overturned the decision which left Lawrence fuming as snicko was once again under the microscope.Joel Paris finished with figures of 4-0-23-2•Cricket Australia/Getty ImagesParis extracts sharp bouncePlaying just his second BBL game of the season, left-arm quick Joel Paris was the standout with the ball for Stars and proved an inspired selection. He is deadly bowling with the red-ball, underlined by a staggering first-class bowling average of 19.47, but has proven less effective on the flatter surfaces used in T20 cricket. But Paris relished bowling on a pitch providing assistance for the quicks and he used his towering height to devastating effect with several of his deliveries lifting off a length. He was initially left frustrated after opener Josh Brown was dropped at mid-off by Peter Siddle, whose right hand received a stinging blow. He was promptly moved from the position and replaced by Maxwell, who on the next delivery clung onto a blow from Brown.Paris should have claimed Jacob Bethell on 2 only for Mark Steketee to drop a straightforward chance at short midwicket. He returned in the 16th over to finally dismiss Bethell with a back of a length delivery and finished with 2 for 23 from 4 overs.Fraser-McGurk’s woes continue, Bethell and Wells revive ‘GadesJake Fraser-McGurk has been in an extended form drought and his run of low scores continued after a sluggish 12 off 14 balls. With three single-digit scores in his last four matches, Fraser-McGurk entered under pressure but he wasn’t going to crawl into his shell. He was determined to back his fearless approach and charged Steketee in the powerplay. But he was totally unconvincing as Fraser-McGurk either couldn’t connect or picked out fielders when he did lay bat on ball. Fraser-McGurk made just 6 off 12 balls and something had to give. He finally found his timing and whacked Steketee down the ground for a huge six over the sightscreen. But it proved a tease with Fraser-McGurk nicking off on the next delivery as Renegades struggled in the first half of the innings. But they recovered through a 71-run stand between Bethell and Jonathan Wells in the highest partnership for Renegades this season.Bethell provided the power, while BBL veteran Wells kept calm and nudged the ball around to good effect on the ground’s vast expanses. They both fell short of deserved half-centuries before Laurie Evans stepped up at the death with an unbeaten 24 off 11 balls to lift the ‘Gades to a total that had appeared beyond them.

'Anger and resentment': PCA holds crisis talks over ECB NOC policy

Players concerned by lack of consultation and clarity in board’s stance on franchise leagues

ECB plans to refuse some players NOCs for the PSL have met with blowback•AFP/Getty Images

English players held crisis talks with the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) on Monday in response to the ECB’s new policy on No-Objection Certificates (NOCs), which the board’s chief executive Richard Gould says will prevent domestic competitions being “undermined” by overseas leagues.Players are said to have expressed “robust views” to their representatives at the PCA, and believe there was insufficient consultation from the ECB before the introduction of a new policy. They are also looking for further clarity on specific scenarios that could arise both during the upcoming English summer and the ongoing offseason. An ECB spokesperson confirmed to ESPNcricinfo on Monday that, under the terms of their policy, any players who have any provision to play red-ball cricket in their county contracts will not be considered white-ball specialists. That could have significant repercussions for the PSL in April-May, ruling a number of English players out.Several recent England internationals, including Saqib Mahmood, Luke Wood and George Garton, are on county contracts which primarily cover white-ball cricket but also contain ‘pay-as-you-play’ options for the Championship. As a result, they will not be granted NOCs to play overseas during the English season – but would be if they retired from red-ball cricket.Related

'A broken sport': Franchise free-for-all compromises players' incentives

PCA chief: Counties will be 'discerning' about players' franchise availability

A senior county source said that the new restrictions will ensure that the best cricketers in the country are available to play in the County Championship, and remind players that their county clubs are their primary employers. But others fear that a stringent interpretation could risk prompting a series of players to retire from red-ball cricket in order to play in the PSL, or in other leagues that clash with the English summer.Players are also frustrated at the fact NOCs will be granted to all-format county cricketers for the IPL but not the PSL, which they perceive to be a major inconsistency. There is no explicit mention of either league in the published policy, but the ECB has given clear indications that it will continue to issue NOCs for the IPL as it has done in previous years. For example, Jamie Overton – who is contracted to Surrey rather than England – will be granted an NOC to play in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings after he was signed at last weekend’s mega-auction, missing the first two months of the Championship season as a result. But if Overton had gone unsold in the IPL and then signed a PSL deal instead, he would not have been granted an NOC.”There’s anger and resentment around it,” one agent told ESPNcricinfo on Monday. “This new policy just seems to show that the power lies with India, and it seems to be about the ECB not wanting to upset India… Players feel as though they’re not being listened to: has the PCA put the players’ feelings across to the ECB robustly enough? Or has the PCA been sidelined on this?”Players are also seeking clarity on the likely impact of the new policy on their movements in the ongoing off-season. The ECB has told players that they will not grant NOCs for two tournaments that overlap to avoid a situation where players could earn more from being eliminated early. But some have already signed deals in clashing leagues on the understanding that they would leave one midway through.Further meetings have been scheduled for later this week, including one between the PCA and UK-based player agents on Wednesday morning. Daryl Mitchell, the PCA’s interim chief executive, told ESPNcricinfo on Friday that the union’s legal team were “completing a thorough check” of the new policy, raising the prospect of a restraint-of-trade lawsuit.

Morgan wants Root, Stokes in England squad for Champions Trophy 2025

The former England captain is all for backing younger players but believes the big guns should be back in a major world tournament

Will Root and Stokes make their ODI return?•PA Images/Getty

Eoin Morgan believes that England must recall Joe Root and Ben Stokes to their white-ball set-up ahead of next year’s Champions Trophy in Pakistan.Root and Stokes last played ODIs at the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, where England’s attempt to defend the title they won for the first time under Morgan’s leadership in 2019 culminated in an ignominious group-stage exit. Neither player will feature in the three-match series against West Indies which starts later this month, but England have hinted they are still in the mix.Stokes was unavailable for England’s 3-2 series defeat against Australia last month due to injury, though would have been unlikely to feature regardless, while Root was rested to give him a break between Test series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. England were also missing Mark Wood and Jos Buttler through injury, with Harry Brook captaining in Buttler’s absence.Related

Joe Root and Ben Stokes still in Champions Trophy mix despite ODI omission

“At the moment, I’m happy to back the younger players,” Morgan said at the launch of the International Masters League in Mumbai on Tuesday. “In the recent series against Australia, they found a template. Australia, you have to commend how good they are at the moment in all formats of the game. But when you put them up against a side that, at stages, didn’t have [Jofra] Archer, no Wood, Stokes and Root as well, no Buttler, that’s half your England team.”The run chase at Durham, when Harry Brook scored that magnificent hundred and then just went on to find his feet as captain… the template that they found in that game, I thought, is one that really suits the players that they’ve selected. I would encourage them to continue with that template and look ahead to the Champions Trophy.”England only play six more ODIs before the Champions Trophy next year: three in the Caribbean, and three more in India in early February. Morgan believes that the West Indies series will provide their younger players with an opportunity to make their cases for inclusion, but that Brendon McCullum should bring the big guns back when he takes over as white-ball coach in January.”Ben Stokes has already said that he hasn’t had the call yet from Baz as to whether he will play or not,” Morgan said. “If that call comes, obviously he would love to play. In my eyes, they’ve got to come into a major world tournament and look to win it, and that means trying to find the best team – and for me, Stokes and Root are in that best team.”The younger players playing in the upcoming series against the West Indies, and then coming here [India] in February, the opportunity is there in front of your face. And that opportunity can be quickly taken away when those big names come back.”

Better than Aaronson: Leeds submit bid to sign £21m Sadiki alternative

What a big summer it is going to be for Leeds United.

Daniel Farke’s side are hoping to defy the odds and avoid relegation in the Premier League, something that has become notoriously more difficult over the past few seasons. In the last couple of campaigns, all six previously promoted sides were relegated.

So, it will have to be an odds-defying campaign for the Whites, who were the team to beat in the second tier last season. They won the Championship, picking up 100 points and losing just four games. Farke will be hoping to count on his players to step up even more in 2025/26.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkebefore the match

However, they will be active in the transfer market too. In fact, they are stepping up their hunt for a midfielder to help upgrade their options in the middle of the park.

Leeds' hunt for a midfielder

Farke already has some talented midfielders at his disposal, including Ao Tanaka and Ilia Gruev. So, to strengthen in that area, and potentially upgrade on the likes of Brenden Aaronson, would be a huge statement of intent.

According to a report from the Yorkshire Evening Post, the Whites have ‘included’ Noah Sadiki on their shortlist to beef up the midfield this summer.

However, he’s not the only one. Indeed, they are said to have ‘identified’ Strasbourg midfielder Habib Diarra ‘as a potential midfield addition’. The Senegal international is a player ‘they believe will be Premier League quality’ ahead of next season.

It would appear that this a move firmly in the works now with Sky Sports journalist Rob Dorsett further revealing on Tuesday that the Elland Road outfit have lodged a bid of £21m to sign Diarra.

Why Diarra would be a good signing

If Leeds were to sign Diarra this summer, they would be adding a “complete midfielder” to the squad. At least, that is how football analyst Ben Mattinson described the Senegal international, implying he can play all over midfield.

Habib Diarra for Strasbourg against PSG.

That “Swiss Army Knife” type profile would surely work well in Farke’s midfield, and give him plenty of tactical flexibility. Diarra is both a goalscorer and creator, finding the back of the net four times and registering five assists for Strasbourg last season.

Impressively, the 21-year-old, who is already the Strasbourg captain after coming through their academy, scored on the international stage for Senegal against England one week ago. He showed good intelligence to curve his run behind the Three Lions defence, carrying the ball into the six-yard box and slotting home from a narrow angle.

Diarra could be the perfect upgrade in the Leeds midfield for Aaronson. The USA international has previously struggled in the Premier League.

He has made 36 appearances in the top flight of England, mainly operating as a number 10 and a right-winger, but has just four goals and assists to his name.

Despite scoring nine times and registering two assists in 46 Championship games last season, there have been doubts about Aaronson’s scalability to the top flight. The Whites’ former goalkeeper, Paul Robinson, told Football Insider he is “nowhere near Premier League level”.

So, if they do bring Diarra in as his replacement, the numbers on FBref suggest it’d be a good move. Not only did he average more goals and assists per 90 minutes than Aaronson, with 0.34 compared to 0.28, but his off-the-ball work was better, too. Diarra’s 3.45 ball recoveries each game trumped Aaronson’s tally of 3.09.

If Leeds can agree a deal to sign Diarra somewhere around the £21m mark, it would be a fantastic piece of business. They are signing a leader and an international-class midfielder, capable of playing numerous roles.

As far as an upgrade on Aaronson goes, time will tell, but the stats are there to suggest this is the dream move for the Yorkshire club this summer.

Celtic contacted over 38 y/o key figure, unexpected Parkhead exit on cards

Celtic are thriving on the field under Brendan Rodgers, but they may now be set for an unexpected turn of events behind the scenes following recent developments.

Brendan Rodgers aims to maintain Celtic winning culture

Evaluating the landscape of Scottish football, Celtic find themselves head and shoulders above the rest as they close in on another domestic treble.

Brendan Rodgers knows his side only need to defeat Aberdeen at Hampden later this month to achieve that feat, while he is also the third-most successful manager in the club’s illustrious history behind Willie Maley and Jock Stein.

However, there has been some speculation surrounding the Celtic boss as he heads into the final year of his contract at Parkhead with little to no update on a potential extension.

Like any manager worth his salt, Rodgers wants full backing from the Hoops hierarchy before his side take on the challenge of facing whoever they draw in the final round of Champions League qualifying.

Citing the need for signings, Celtic are very interested in Red Star Belgrade defender Veljko Milosavljevic, potentially laying down a marker with regard to what supporters can expect from their club in the summer market.

Stability at Parkhead has led to a steady stream of success. That hasn’t just come from the manager, but the rank and file department members that exist below his sphere of influence.

Nevertheless, everyone at one point will look to strike out on their own should the opportunity present itself. That is just the reality of career progression in the cold light of day.

With that in mind, Celtic could face a fight to hold onto one of their trusted coaches after the club were approached over his availability, per recent developments.

Swansea City approach Celtic to land Darren O'Dea

According to Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph on X, Swansea City have approached Celtic as they look to appoint Darren O’Dea as their assistant manager following Alan Sheehan’s appointment as head coach at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Former Republic of Ireland international O’Dea is currently the Bhoys’ Professional Player Pathway Manager, though he could now be set to swap Glasgow for the EFL Championship side if all parties agree on a deal.

O’Dea has also managed Celtic’s B Team in conjunction with Stephen McManus, and his departure may come as something of a surprise despite his ambitions of entering the dugout at senior level.

Either way, Hoops fans and figures from inside the club will wish him well if he were to take up Swansea on their offer, given his reputation as a bright young coach who has worked his way up the Lennoxtown ranks.
