Ex-West Brom star amused by West Ham’s £6m Sam Johnstone bid

Ex-West Brom midfielder Carlton Palmer has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that there is “no way in the world” that West Ham target Sam Johnstone is going to be sold for £6m.

The east London club recently tested the waters with a bid for the Baggies goalkeeper, which Sky Sports claim was worth just £6m.

Johnstone has just one year remaining on his contract, while West Brom are now in the Championship, so West Ham may feel there is a chance to do a deal and at a very cheap price.

For Palmer, though, at £6m, nothing will happen. On West Ham’s reported bid, the former West Brom player told TT:

“They are trying it on, aren’t they? It’s always the situation whereby when a club gets relegated, they know that they’ll want to cut the wage bill.

“So, of course, West Ham are just testing the water to see where they are. But there’s no way in the world he’s going to be available for 6 million.”

Lukasz Fabianski is 36 now, so you can see why David Moyes and West Ham want to bring in another goalkeeper.

However, Johnstone is unlikely to be his successor if £6m is the only offer the Hammers can muster up.

Pundit tells James Ward-Prowse to join Aston Villa - Exclusive

Former Premier League striker Marcus Bent has exclusively told Football FanCast that he believes that signing for Aston Villa would be a step in the right direction for James Ward-Prowse, who Football Insider’s Kevin Phillips believes would cost £35m+.

On the back of another excellent season for Southampton, in which he was one of just three ever-present outfield players, the midfielder has been strongly linked with a switch to Villa Park.

Ward-Prowse managed eight Premier League goals, his best career return, whilst he also added seven assists which meant he contributed to more than 30 percent of Southampton’s league goals.

Two of which were spectacular free-kicks in Saints’ 4-3 victory at Villa back in early-November.

Despite his excellent form, the 26-year-old narrowly missed out on being named in the final 26-man England squad for the Euro’s after failing to get the nod following Trent Alexander Arnold’s withdrawal.

But whilst Gareth Southgate wasn’t completed convinced, Dean Smith has been, with Villa hoping to make the midfielder their second summer addition following the club-record arrival of Emiliano Buendia of Norwich.

And Bent told Football FanCast that he believes it’s a move the Southampton man should make:

“Where Aston Villa have got a few talented players, it would be a good move for him.

“I think he’d probably, well not push for it but he’s the captain at Southampton. Could he play another season? Maybe, but I’m not sure if they’re moving forward.

“And Aston Villa are a big club, maybe he wants to move as a stepping stone so it would be a good move for him.”

Southampton dealt Ryan Gauld blow

Southampton’s hopes of signing Ryan Gauld this summer have taken a blow after SC Farense triggered a one-year extension option in his contract, meaning he will now set the Saints back somewhere in the region of £3.5m, rather than being available on a free transfer as was initially thought.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were first linked with a move for the Scottish midfielder by the Daily Record earlier this month, with the reports suggesting that he was keen on a move to St Mary’s so he could link up with fellow Scot and former Dundee United teammate Stuart Armstrong.

The 25-year-old’s contract with SC Farense was set to expire at the end of the season, meaning the Saints could have signed him on a Bosman transfer, but Portuguese news outlet O Jogo have now suggested that they have triggered a one-year extension to his contract ahead of the summer, where an offer of €4m (£3.5m) will be enough to prise him away from Estadio de São Luís.

SC Farense’s head coach Sergio Vieira was full of praise for Gauld last year, saying:

“He has given us fantastic individual quality, played most of every 90
minutes and has been crucial in
contributing with assists and goals.

“He’s a great player, technically very developed and, with the ball at his feet, capable of realising actions that only the best players do.”

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-southampton-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Southampton transfer rumours and news!”]

Given that SC Farense suffered relegation from the Portuguese top-flight this season, despite the best efforts of Gauld, it seems extremely likely that he will depart this summer, but Southampton will have to shell out a fee if they want to bring him to St Mary’s.

The attacking midfielder enjoyed a superb season in the Liga NOS, contributing seven goals and seven assists in 33 league appearances, which helped him average an impressive 7.19 rating from WhoScored, which is better than any Southampton player managed this season.

Therefore, despite the disappointing news that Gauld seemingly won’t be available on a free transfer this summer, Martin Semmens should definitely try to sign him, as he could prove to be an excellent addition to Hasenhuttl’s side ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

And, in other news… Hasenhuttl can amend key 20/21 disaster with summer swoop for £4.5m-rated beast

Palace must play Jean-Philippe Mateta

With a host of first-team regulars set to become free agents over the coming months, serious injuries to young stars mounting up and Wilfried Zaha leaving the door open to a summer exit once again, the task facing Roy Hodgson’s successor at Crystal Palace is already mounting up.

The Eagles’ chairman Steve Parish is expected to provide some funds in order to rebuild large sections of the playing squad, but it’s still expected to be a precarious time for the south London outfit as they enter the post-Hodgson era.

However, one man who could help Palace enjoy a smooth transitional period is already at the club. Jean-Philippe Mateta arrived on an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy back in January, although he failed to find his best form at Selhurst Park in 2020/21.

After impressing at parent club Mainz in the Bundesliga, bagging seven goals in 15 league appearances for the relegation-threatened outfit, Mateta earned himself a move to the Premier League, and big things were expected of the 23-year-old.

Despite his sizeable reputation and Palace’s mediocre form, the former France Under-21 international found himself restricted to just two starts in England’s top-flight in the second half of the recently-concluded campaign.

Mateta only managed to score a solitary goal in his 218 minutes of Premier League action under Hodgson, but his impressive performances at Mainz suggests that whoever replaces the former England boss could have a serious talent at their disposal.

With Christian Benteke and Andros Townsend amongst the players approaching the end of their current contracts at Selhurst Park, and Chelsea loanee Michy Batshuayi expected to return to his parent club, a gaping void in the capital club’s forward line is set to appear ahead of next season.

If the new Palace boss can unlock Mateta’s potential and extract the sort of displays that earned him a move to England in the first place, then life without their old guard will be something the club’s supporters can look forward to rather than fear.

He has the ability to become the Eagles’ new poster boy but he’s yet to be given a fair chance in south London. The next Palace regime must be brave enough to unleash the £13.5-rated beast (as per Transfermarkt) next season.

Ashley Preece drops Ashley Young update for Villa

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has dropped a major update on Aston Villa’s transfer move for Ashley Young.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days have suggested that Dean Smith’s side are keen on bringing the 35-year-old back to the club, years after his first spell  when he played 190 games for Villa.

And now, writing via his official Twitter account, Preece said that Young’s representatives are in talks with Villa, and “that one appears to be moving quickly”.

Fans should be buzzing

Given Villa have already clinched the signing of Emi Buendia from Norwich, the fact they’re now closing in on the signing of Young is a real statement that the club are keen to do their business early this window.

Not only will Smith be buzzing about seeing his second new player come in through the door, but the fans should also be very pleased with the knowledge that Villa are making real strides to improve the first-team squad as soon as possible.

Of course, aside from Young, news also emerged of Villa’s bid for Arsenal starlet Emile Smith Rowe, and while that deal seems unlikely, it remains an indication of the kind of aggressive approach that NSWE are taking to this summer’s transfer window.

These are exciting times to be a Villa fan, and Young’s imminent arrival at Villa Park is yet another sign that the club are on the up and looking to give Smith the best possible tools to succeed in the Premier League next season.

The fans should be buzzing with Preece’s latest update.

Spurs could appoint own Klopp in Inzaghi

Simone Inzaghi remains a managerial target for Tottenham Hotspur, according to reports…

What’s the word?

Wednesday’s print edition of Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) claimed that the interest from North London is genuine but they are yet to make a move for the Lazio boss.

It’s also suggested that the 47-year-old ‘wouldn’t say no’ to Spurs as they continue to look for a successor to Jose Mourinho, who will take charge of Lazio’s arch-rivals AS Roma from next season.

Inzaghi appears to be unhappy at a lack of a contract offer from the Serie A outfit, with his current deal set to expire in the summer having managed them since 2016.

Shades of Klopp?

A move for Inzaghi shouldn’t come too much as a surprise as Daniel Levy has been “desperate” to sign him before. He was among the top targets before Mourinho was appointed in November 2019.

Interestingly, the former striker has been compared to Liverpool chief Jurgen Klopp for his motivational skills – something Spurs could do with right now.

“Klopp is a great expert in football and I always said that I’d have liked to work with him when I was in my best form,” claimed Lazio forward Ciro Immobile, via Football Italia. “He is a complete coach, he has everything. Having said that, he really reminds me of Simone Inzaghi, as they are very similar in their motivational skills, albeit in slightly different ways.”

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-spurs-manager-update-gossip-transfer-rumours-daniel-levy-enic-mason-mourinho-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news, managerial gossip, transfer rumours and more!”]

The Athletic claimed that Mourinho “sucked the culture out of the club” whilst his reign unravelled so quickly as his players were left bored and untested by his training sessions, feeling that his defensively obsessive tactics meant they didn’t know how to attack anymore.

Inzaghi would certainly help both those problems as, in addition to his personal skills, he has proven to be a success with his attacking tactics. For example, Immobile has bagged 149 goals in just 215 appearances since his appointment.

Furthermore, the Eagles average 1.9 goals per game under his stewardship, providing further encouragement that he could well get even more out of that Harry Kane and Heung-min Son partnership.

Lauded by BT commentator Adam Summerton for his “outstanding” work at the Stadio Olimpico and dubbed “pound for pound the best coach in Serie A over last 5 years,” Inzaghi could certainly be the solution to fixing morale at Tottenham.

AND in other news, Levy could sign Spurs’ next Dembele in £30m monster who Lineker dubbed “exceptional”…

Gerrard would be perfect for Alli at Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are on the search for their next manager and several names have been linked with the vacant position…

What’s the word?

Daniel Levy sensationally sacked Jose Mourinho earlier this week after a topsy-turvy 17 months in charge, though the writing was on the wall two months ago when the Telegraph suggested his position was under threat if their form didn’t improve.

90min then added fuel to the fire by claiming that the Spurs hierarchy had already drawn up a shortlist of potential candidates, in which Scottish Premiership champion Steven Gerrard was named.

He’s since been backed for the job following developments this week – speaking in The Times, Tony Cascarino said:

“One manager who looks capable of filling that role [at Spurs] is Steven Gerrard. People say he will be the next Liverpool manager but maybe not, or, if so, perhaps he will do another job before then. What he has done at Rangers is extraordinary: the way he handles himself in interviews and the huge improvement of the team on the pitch. Would he excite the likes of Harry Kane? I would say he would.”

Alli boost

Given his deep ties to Anfield, it remains to be seen if Gerrard would swap Rangers for an old Premier League rival but it certainly didn’t stop Jose Mourinho and would have to be considered a major step up from the Scottish top-flight.

This year’s title victory is several years culmination of the blood, sweat and tears that the former England midfielder has put into his coaching career north of the border, and in reality, is one’s just desserts for his managerial ability.

Over 166 matches, the Gers boss has managed a 65.6% win rate, vastly clear of Mourinho at Spurs (52.3%) and for better comparison, he’s tracking the phenomenal work of Brendan Rodgers, who left Celtic with a 69.8% win rate.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-manager-transfer-news-and-rumours” title=”Read this week’s latest Spurs manager news, transfer rumours and more!”]

He’s done pretty well since returning to England, too, with Leicester sat in third-place, looking every bit like a Europe-chasing side – unlike Spurs.

Gerrard’s alternating 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 system would bring that attack-minded style of football that Levy is thought to be pursuing in his next manager.

As described by The Coaches Voice, ‘Committing numbers forward and attacking around opposing defensive blocks ultimately represent two consistent and prominent features of the nature of attack Gerrard demands; to that end, Rangers also regularly deliver crosses into the penalty area.’

Many of Spurs’ current stars could benefit from the 40-year-old as a result, but none more so than Dele Alli, who was once compared to the Liverpool talisman.

“I’ve got to say that I loved Stevie G as a player and Scholesy but Dele Alli for his age is just a freak of a talent,” once claimed Darren Anderton. “I love his arrogance on the pitch, how clever he is in finding the positions that he does and his willingness to try everything. He is a real joy to watch.”

It was only in 2016/17 that Alli bagged a whopping 18 league goals from midfield and clinched a second ‘Young PFA Player of the Year’ award, a feat only done twice in history before.

Under Mourinho, the 25-year-old has become a forgotten man to the point of almost leaving for Paris Saint-Germain in January. He has played only 234 minutes in the top-flight this campaign.

If anyone is to bring out the best in Alli, then it’s surely Gerrard, who the Spurs midfielder can become a carbon copy of.

Liverpool fans laud Harry Wilson hat-trick

A number of Liverpool fans have been heaping praise on Harry Wilson following his superb hat-trick for Cardiff City over the weekend.

The 24-year-old has suffered a frustrating Reds career to date, only making two senior appearances for the club. Wilson has found himself loaned out a number of times, with Jurgen Klopp unable to promise him regular playing time at Anfield.

[freshpress-quiz id=“355458″]

The Wales international is currently plying his trade at Championship side Cardiff for the 2020/21 season and he was at his influential best on Saturday afternoon, scoring three of their goals in a 4-0 win away to Birmingham City, with each of his efforts coming from outside the penalty area.

It means that Wilson now has seven goals and 11 assists to his name in the league this season before returning to Liverpool in the summer and possibly taking part in pre-season with Klopp’s first team squad.

Fry’s take on Hammers’ possible £40m bid

Peterborough United Director of Football has told Football FanCast that he doubts West Ham manager David Moyes will spend £40m on Tammy Abraham.

The Chelsea striker is reportedly available this summer, with the Blues willing to cash in should they receive a big bid.

The Daily Telegraph has reported that he would cost around £40m, and there is said to be interest from both West Ham and Leicester City.

Abraham has scored 12 goals in all competitions this season but he has struggled for minutes at times, particularly under the management of Thomas Tuchel.

Indeed, he was not even included in the squad for the FA Cup final against Leicester, a game the Blues lost 1-0.

Fry, though, wonders just how much Moyes will have to spend this summer and, as such, doubts whether he would be willing to splurge on one player.

The Irons are currently seventh in the Premier League and are not guaranteed qualification for Europe this season despite flirting with the top four throughout the campaign.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, Fry said: “If the manager wants him, I can see them trying to back the manager.

“It depends what sort of kitty Moyes has got. If he’s got, say, £60 million to spend I don’t think he’ll spend £40 million on one player.”

Ancelotti criticised for Gbamin call

One of the few positives for Everton fans following their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace on Monday evening was the return of Jean-Philippe Gbamin from injury.

The midfielder replaced goalscorer James Rodriguez with 10 minutes remaining at Goodison Park.

Gbamin joined Everton in the summer of 2019 but had only made two appearances for the club before last night. He has been through an injury nightmare, sidelined this season by an Achilles tendon rupture following a lengthy hamstring injury last term.

The Ivorian touched the ball 15 times during his cameo, completing six passes and making one tackle and one clearance (via SofaScore).

Expectations will have to be managed in the coming weeks given the length of his absence. He had last played competitive football 597 days ago, as the official Everton Twitter account noted after the game.

A number of supporters questioned the wisdom of introducing in such a high-stakes situation. Everton went onto surrender their lead, a significant setback to their hopes of finishing of the top four.

Perhaps Carlo Ancelotti ought to have delayed Gbamin’s comeback for a moment when the result was settled – these Toffees on Twitter certainly seemed to think so.
