Queens Park Rangers set to sign Andre Gray

Queens Park Rangers look set to seal the arrival of Andre Gray at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium on Tuesday.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Watford Observer, who claim that, after it was reported that QPR had agreed to take the Watford centre-forward on a season-long loan, the 30-year-old has now passed his medical with Mark Warburton’s side, with his official arrival in west London set to be announced imminently.

The report added that, with just one year remaining on his current contract at Vicarage Road, it appears as if the striker’s move to QPR has brought an end to his time at the Premier League outfit.

Bhatia masterclass

Amit Bhatia has overseen a remarkable summer transfer window at QPR, with the chairman sanctioning the permanent signings of players such as Andre Dozzell, Stefan Johansen, Charlie Austin, Jordy de Wijs and Jimmy Dunne. Having also brought highly-rated Norwich City left-back Sam McCallum to the club on a season-long loan deal, the further addition of Gray would seem to be the cherry on the cake for Rs.

Indeed, while the £3.6m-rated striker failed to ever really cement a starting spot for the Hornets after his then club-record £18.5m move from Burnley back in 2017, the 30-year-old nevertheless impressed in spells during his time at Vicarage Road. He scored five goals and provided three assists over his 31 Premier League appearances back in 2017/18, as well as bagging seven goals and registering two assists over 29 top-flight fixtures in the following campaign.

However, the £70k-per-week forward’s previous form in the Championship is what will have interested QPR most, with the Rs undoubtedly hoping the man who Xisco Munoz dubbed a “brilliant” player can replicate his returns for Burnley back in 2015/16, when the Jamaica international scored a whopping 23 goals and provided eight assists over his 41 league appearances.

If he can, then Gray’s signing could well prove to be something of a masterclass by Bhatia, as it would seem that the striker boasts the ability to be the difference between promotion and yet another season in the Championship for QPR come next May.

Chapple, Hogg dismantle Essex for 20

Essex were bowled out for 20, registering the lowest score in their history in falling to a heavy, three-day defeat on an astonishing afternoon at Chelmsford

Essex were bowled out for 20, registering the lowest score in their history in falling to a heavy, three-day defeat on an astonishing afternoon at Chelmsford. Kyle Hogg and Glen Chapple ripped through them in the space of 14 overs and 68 minutes on a flat pitch, as the procession of batsmen entering and leaving the field became almost bewildering. It was as if a collective panic possessed Essex, and the sense of shock in the crowd was palpable, reawakening tensions that had threatened to erupt earlier in the season after an innings defeat to Northamptonshire that the coach, Paul Grayson, afterwards described as “shambolic” in issuing a public apology. He may now have to quell further unrest.”I don’t know what to say to be honest because I’m still in a state of shock,” Grayson said. “Nothing has been said in the dressing room because now is not the right time but we are all coming in tomorrow for a chat and we’ll reflect and analyse then what happened.”Emotions are running very high at the moment as you can imagine, there’s not a lot of singing and dancing going on. As I say, I’m lost for words. It was a good wicket probably one of the best all year that we could have batted on at Chelmsford but 20 all out, it’s amazing.”Although there have been 29 first-class innings that have ended on a lower note, the majority occurred in the days of uncovered pitches. The most recent example in the Championship came exactly 30 years ago, when Essex were the tormentors, bowling out Surrey for 14. Last year, Durham dismissed Durham MCCU for 18, leading to questions about the first-class status of university matches.Only one batsman, Jaik Mickleburgh, achieved double figures and although three of the wickets were due to errors by batsmen, the rest were the result of dead straight bowling. The whole business was particularly puzzling as Hogg and Chapple had themselves scored 58 and 50 respectively earlier in the day.”We’ve been involved in a piece of history,” said Hogg, who described the action as “unreal”. Chapple, who has been playing for more than 20 years, said: “It’s definitely one of the best days of cricket I’ve had in my career because things just don’t happen like that. In terms of it being memorable, it’s right up there.”In retrospect it’s surprising that it took Lancashire eleven balls to take their first wicket. The first two to fall, both taken by Hogg, were preventable – top-order batsmen playing loose shots. Tom Westley drove to extra cover, where Simon Katich dived forward to hold an excellent catch. Hamish Rutherford played a similar shot and Chapple didn’t have to move at mid-off.The next dismissal was the first three of six lbws in the innings. Owais Shah played across the line to Hogg, then Ryan ten Doeschate was so plum that he walked before the umpire had time to raise his finger, and Chapple had the first of his four. Next Hogg trapped Ben Foakes, and at that stage had figures of 4 for 3.What Essex needed least in the midst of such carnage was a run out, but that’s what they managed to contrive. Mickleburgh called James Foster for a quick single and Chapple, fielding off his own bowling, threw down Foster’s stumps. It was turning into pandemonium.Chapple mopped up the remaining four wickets. He had Graham Napier – Essex’s beacon of light in a season fast becoming shrouded in darkness – leg-before first ball, then castled Sajid Mahmood.Mickleburgh had observed all the mayhem from the non-striker’s end, and there was speculation about the lowest score for a batsman carrying his bat until he was ninth out for 10, comfortably the highest score of the innings. The end came one ball later when Chapple rapped Reece Topley on the pads. Six batsmen had failed to score. In the morning session the Lancashire tail had shown what could be done on this pitch. They resumed seven runs behind with three wickets in hand and looking to Katich to extend his overnight century. He did so, but only by two, and a narrow lead appeared likely. But there can be few better No. 9s in the County Championship than Hogg, and Chapple can hold a bat as well. Together they put on 69 for the ninth wicket before David Masters knocked back Hogg’s middle stump. Even then the scoring wasn’t over as Simon Kerrigan joined his captain and helped him add 52 more. There was no indication of the stunning stuff to come. Lunch was taken late as Lancashire were nine wickets down at 1pm, so the Essex innings began at around 2.20pm. By 3.30pm it was all over.Essex scored 30 against Yorkshire at Leyton in 1901, their previous lowest score. What’s more, this was the lowest-ever total by any team against Lancashire, dipping under the 22 scored by Glamorgan at Liverpool in 1924.

Howey: Deadline day move to Sunderland possible for Jebbison

Former professional footballer Steve Howey believes that Daniel Jebbison possibly could make a move to Sunderland late in the transfer window.

The Northern Echo reported that Sunderland were keen on a loan move for the Sheffield United forward, but it would rely on Will Grigg being moved on and also getting the Blades to lower their financial demands.

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol also posted on Twitter that three Premier League clubs were interested in signing the striker permanently, with Everton named as one of those clubs.

The 18-year-old featured for the Sheffield United first team on four occasions last season, scoring one goal while he also scored four goals in four games in the FA Youth Cup.

This season, Jebbison has only featured for the Blades in their Carabao Cup meeting with Carlisle United, but Steve Howey believes that he could possibly make a move to the Stadium of Light late on in the transfer window.

Howey exclusively told the Transfer Tavern: “Again, it’s one of these where, will it just get over the line kind of the last day of the transfer window? Possibly. I don’t think it’s great for the player when this kind of thing goes on as well. You’d rather think, well, where am I? Am I stopping? Am I going? What’s happening?

“It kind of unsettles him, it unsettles his family, they don’t know if they’re going in that house or tomorrow am I moving somewhere completely different in the country.

“I think all he has to think about is just concentrating on his football and he’s only got a week left to actually put his mind at rest and he knows exactly where he’s going.”

Sky Sports’ Bridge tips Man City to eventually sign Lewandowski

Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge believes that it is only Manchester City who have the money to afford Robert Lewandowski.

Sky Sports were told that Lewandowski is happy at Bayern Munich but wants a move to another top European club before he is 35.

Lewandowski, who turns 33 on his next birthday (21 August), has been in fine goalscoring form for Bayern Munich, scoring 297 times in 331 matches. The Poland international is second on the all-time top goal scorers in Bundesliga, with 276 goals.

Last season alone he managed to score an incredible 48 goals in all competitions.

The Sky Sports report also says that Bayern Munich value Lewandowski at more than £100m, with Michael Bridge believing it’s surely only Manchester City who have the money for the striker, telling Football FanCast: “Is it only City? I mean, surely it’s only City and we know how much Pep loved him at Bayern Munich, but no other club has the money to pay.”

City have been linked with a move for Harry Kane throughout the summer and there were also reports of them being interested in Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic, but journalist Fabrizio Romano posted on his Twitter account that the Fiorentina president Commisso had said: “I don’t know what’s gonna happen but I’m planning to keep Vlahovic this summer, I want him to stay. But if we receive a bid of €100m, I’ll think about it.”

N Srinivasan's rise in the BCCI

A timeline of N Srinivasan’s rise to power in the BCCI and some major decisions that he enforced

ESPNcricinfo staff25-May-2013N Srinivasan succeeded Shashank Manohar as BCCI president in 2011•AFP

2001: N Srinivasan enters cricket administration in his home state of Tamil Nadu, as an ally of former BCCI president, AC Muthiah.2002: Becomes president of Tamil Nadu Cricket Association.2005: Srinivasan is elected BCCI treasurer after forming an informal alliance with Indian politician Sharad Pawar, in a bid to cast then board president Jagmohan Dalmiya out from the BCCI’s power centre. Pawar is elected as president.January 2008: India Cements, the Chennai-based company owned by Srinivasan’s family, wins the Chennai IPL franchise when the city-based bids are awarded. Controversy over a conflict of interest issue ensues.September 2008: Clause 6.2.4 of the IPL’s Regulations for Players, Team officials, Umpires and Administrators is amended. Before amendment, it read: “No administrator shall have, directly or indirectly, any commercial interest in the matches and events conducted by the board.” After the change, it read: “No administrator shall have, directly or indirectly, any commercial interest in any of the events of the BCCI, excluding IPL, Champions League and Twenty20.”September 2008: Srinivasan is elected as Secretary of BCCI.April 2010: Former BCCI president AC Muthiah files a petition in the Supreme Court of India challenging the board’s rules that permit BCCI and IPL administrators to be part of the IPL and own league teams. The petition follows the Madras High Court’s decision to dismiss a similar plea filed by Muthiah.September 2010: The Supreme Court observes that there appears to have been a conflict of interest in Srinivasan holding the office of BCCI treasurer while bidding for an IPL franchise. It suggests that he resign from his position in the board and retain his status as the owner of the Chennai Super Kings. However, it says, these were observations and not a judgement.September 2010: Srinivasan gets strong backing for president-elect. The formalisation of Srinivasan as president-elect comes through the nominations he receives not only from the South Zone teams of Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad and Kerala but also three nominations from outside the zone – Saurashtra, Orissa and Jharkhand.April 2011: A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court delivers a split verdict on Muthiah’s petition challenging Srinivasan’s right to hold a position in the board while also holding a stake in an IPL franchise. At this point, Srinivasan is the BCCI’s secretary. The split verdict means the petition is to be referred to the Chief Justice for allocating it to a larger bench.August 2011: Muthiah files a petition to stop Srinivasan from officially taking over as BCCI president at September’s annual general meeting. The petition is based on the grounds that a two-judge bench returned a split verdict on the conflict of interest case in April.September 2011: India’s Supreme Court clears the way for Srinivasan to take over as BCCI president, but its decision is subject to the outcome of Muthiah’s petition challenging his election. The court rules that if Srinivasan is stopped from becoming president at this point, it would amount to deciding the outcome of that pending petition, which is being looked at by a larger bench of the Supreme Court. There has been no further news on this front till date.September 19, 2011: Srinivasan, who was appointed president-elect at BCCI’s 2010 annual general meeting, officially takes over as BCCI president from Shashank Manohar at the board’s 2011 AGM in Mumbai. His term is for two years, extendable by one year.September 2011: In the first of his statements criticising the DRS, India’s new board president Srinivasan says the system in its then present form is not good enough, after Hot Spot – which was made mandatory at the previous ICC meeting on the urging of the BCCI – proved inconclusive on a few occasions during India’s 2011 tour of England.February 2012: Following Sahara’s announcement that it had decided to pull out of its sponsorship of the Indian team and ownership of the Pune Warriors IPL franchise due to several points of dispute with the BCCI – an announcement that came just an hour before the start of the annual IPL auction – Srinivasan begins the conciliatory process. It ends well, with Sahara returning to the fold.February 2012: Srinivasan announces that the BCCI’s working committee has rejected several recommendations of the Woolf report concerning the restructuring of the ICC.December 2012: Former India selector accuses N Srinivasan of interfering in selection matters by blocking the selectors’ decision to drop MS Dhoni after India’s 4-0 loss to Australia in January 2012. The BCCI chooses not to respond to Amarnath’s statements.May 2013: L Sivaramakrishnan is elected to ICC’s cricket committee, replacing FICA chief executive, Tim May. The election creates controversy as May suggests that the BCCI pressurised other Test-playing nations into voting for SivaramakrishnanMay 2013: The arrest of three Rajasthan Royals players for alleged spot-fixing opens up a fresh controversy which affects Srinivasan after his son-in-law, Gurunath Meiyappan is arrested for alleged betting.
