Celtic: Rogic omitted from Australia squad

A notable development has emerged on Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic regarding his situation heading into the international break.

What’s the latest?

The midfielder has been left out of Australia’s squad for their upcoming matches. Socceroos head coach Graham Arnold explained the 28-year-old’s absence, putting it down to injury after he sustained a knock in the win over Hibernian last month.

He said: “Tom Rogic, Aaron Mooy and Adam Taggart were unavailable for selection this window due to injury or quarantine, however we have developed good depth in the Socceroos over the past few years and the squad that has been selected is one that we have full belief in to perform strongly for the Australian public.”

Ange will be buzzing

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou will surely be buzzing with this news, as it appears to align with his plan to get Rogic back fit. Whilst a player being left out of their national team due to injury may be a blow in other situations, this time it could be a huge boost for the Hoops.

Last month, the Celtic manager revealed that the midfielder will be out for two to three weeks and outlined his scheduled return. He told the Daily Record: “He had a scan on his hamstring. It’s going to put him out for at least two to three weeks. It’s not a major one but he definitely won’t be involved in these games.

“Then obviously we have the international window, and if everything goes to plan he should be available once we get back from that.”

Rogic going halfway across the globe to play for Australia during the break could have ruined Postecoglou’s plan for multiple reasons. For starters, he would be flying around the world and returning late ahead of Celtic’s return to action, which could set him back in is recovery, while he could also aggravate his injury by playing for his country.

The £16k-per-week gem could have caused further issues by trying to play through the knock for Australia, which could then have forced him to miss more competitive matches for the Hoops. That is why the Celtic boss will be delighted that Rogic has been left out of the squad, as it gives the 28-year-old the time he needs to recover.

In the Premiership this season, the midfielder has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.97 across 11 appearances despite only starting seven of those matches. He has chipped in with one goal and two assists and his statistics show that he is capable of performing consistently to a high level, which is why his lack of involvement for Australia and the reduced chance of him aggravating his injury is a huge boost for Celtic.

West Indies need to play smart cricket in ODIs – Bravo

Dwayne Bravo, West Indies’ ODI captain, wants his team to be “skillful and smart” as they take on India in a three-match series, starting with the first ODI in Kochi on November 21

Dwayne Bravo hoped Darren Sammy could put a poor Test series behind him and perform in the ODIs•BCCI

Dwayne Bravo, West Indies’ ODI captain, wants his team to be “skillful and smart” as they take on India in a three-match series, starting with the first ODI in Kochi on November 21.In spite of the 2-0 rout in the Test series, Bravo was confident that his bowlers could challenge the India batsmen in what he expects will be a high-scoring series.”Their previous series [against Australia] was a run feast. But these are different conditions, different venues, and we have a different bowling attack,” Bravo said. “Our bowlers are similar to the Indian bowlers. We have Ravi Rampaul, Sunil Narine, Jason Holder. I think we expect this will be a high-scoring series and the team that bowls better will win the series, so it’s up to us as bowlers to try and get things right.”According to Bravo, pace was unlikely to help the bowlers too much in Indian conditions. Instead, he urged his bowlers to focus on skills.”This will require more skills, not too much pace, as we saw with the Australians – most of their bowlers delivered at 140 kph and they were not successful. My advice to my team will be to be skillful and smart.”Bravo also hoped that the change in formats would allow players like Darren Sammy and Chris Gayle to hit form. Gayle scored 97 runs in four innings during the Tests at an average of 24.25, while Sammy could only muster 25 from four innings and was wicketless in the series.”I think one-day and Twenty20 cricket give you more freedom,” Bravo said. “Darren Sammy did not do well in the Tests, but he could be our match-winner in the ODIs, playing the role that Kieron Pollard has played for us. Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels could also find their feet here.”It has been a while since we played a Test series, so coming to India was never going to be easy, even Australia came here and lost 4-0 in a Test series. This will be an opportunity for the players to express themselves, but they still have to be smart. There are 300 balls in every innings and, as long as they play smart, we will have a good series.”

Taylor, McCullum centuries drive NZ

A power-packed double-act from New Zealand’s experienced duo of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor tormented West Indies’ bowlers in Dunedin after Darren Sammy, without hesitation, had chosen to field on a grassy pitch

McGlashan: Perfect first day for New Zealand

Fast hands: Brendon McCullum took full toll off an ineffective bowling attack•AFP

Smart stats

This was Brendon Mccullum’s first hundred in 26 Tests and 47 innings, and his seventh Test ton. The last time he hit a century in Tests was against India, in Hyderabad in November 2010, when he scored a double-hundred in the second innings.

This is only the sixth time four of the top-five New Zealand batsmen have made fifty-plus scores in an innings, and the first since 2001, against Pakistan in Hamilton.

New Zealand have scored 350 or more before the fall of their fourth wicket, for first time since the Chittagong Test against Bangladesh in 2004.

This was the fourth time New Zealand’s No. 4 and No. 5 both hit centuries in an innings. The last time it happened was against India in Napier in 2009, when Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder made three-figures.

Taylor’s hundred was his ninth in Tests, and his first against West Indies from five Tests.

A power-packed double-act from New Zealand’s experienced duo of Brendon McCullum and Ross Taylor tormented West Indies’ bowlers in Dunedin after Darren Sammy, without hesitation, had chosen to field on a grassy pitch. The two batsmen brought up their long-awaited centuries and added 182 runs at frenetic pace to start New Zealand’s summer in the best possible manner. The last time Taylor scored a century – in November 2012 – he was still the captain of New Zealand, but the search for a triple-digit score in McCullum’s Test stats takes one back by three years when he hit a double-century in India. That was 47 innings ago. In those three years, McCullum continued to feature in the New Zealand Test team, saw the captaincy move from Daniel Vettori to Taylor, then to himself, but despite the added responsibility, his batting form didn’t show any signs of revival. Until today.McCullum joined Taylor just before tea having seen three of New Zealand’s top-order batsmen waste good starts by throwing their wickets away. He brought the customary approach in the third session, attacking anything marginally full or short or, in some cases, perfectly good balls with utter disdain to help New Zealand ransack 173 runs in the 35-over long last session. At least a boundary was hit in 18 of those overs.Shane Shillingford, who underwent testing on his bowling action in Perth recently, was included in the XI by West Indies and he bore the brunt of McCullum’s assault, giving away 39 runs off 38 balls including two sixes and four fours. With no bowler being able to exert any pressure, McCullum raced away to his seventh century in 101 balls, his brutal pull over midwicket and a back foot punch over extra cover, both off Shanon Gabriel, being the two standout shots in his innings.Taylor maintained a good pace as well, reaching his ninth century in 150 balls, but it appeared as if he was just holding an end. His innings was laced with 13 fours, dominated by crisp drives and square cuts.Sammy had gleefully said it was the greenest pitch he had ever seen but his bowlers were not able to extract any help from it. As the day wore on, it became a true batting surface and both batsmen took full toll. It was only the third time in 51 Tests the two added more than 100 together, the current partnership by far their best. The stand ensured New Zealand took the driving position in the Test after they were 194 for 3 at tea.The top three batsmen also had starts, but they failed to cash in on the insipid bowling. The local boy, Rutherford, who hit 171 on debut here, had scored 62, but he fell to a brilliant one-handed catch by Narsingh Deonarine towards the boundary. Fulton had been patient during his stay 228-minute stay, bringing up his sixth fifty-plus score this year, but he was caught at slip while trying to push at a delivery away from his body. Aaron Redmond, the No.3 filling in for the injured Kane Williamson, was also caught off a leading edge early in the second session while trying to clip a short of length delivery. The bowlers did little of credit in the three dismissals. Not much went as per the script for West Indies. The opening bowlers – Tino Best and Gabriel – struggled to find the right length. Best worked up some pace but with a shorter length, the batsmen found it easy to either play it comfortably off the back foot or sway away from the line.Best dabbled with a fuller length briefly in his first spell, but Rutherford used those deliveries as a springboard to his innings. Best’s spell in the second session was a big improvement as he hurried the batsmen. He managed to get Redmond’s wicket and could have had Taylor early too as the batsman fended at a short delivery. The ball ballooned over the slip cordon and, to the bowler’s chagrin, rolled over to the boundary. He bowled tirelessly, but with shorter length and no movement, he was not going to trouble the batsmen.Gabriel, who was preferred over left-arm seamer Sheldon Cottrell, remained ineffective across sessions, bowling benign spells and giving away 98 runs in his 17 overs.Sammy, playing as the third seamer, found the movement that others didn’t. He stuck to one length, getting the ball to swing away slightly and managed to find the outside edge of Fulton’s bat, only to see it fly past third slip. It was Sammy who finally ended Fulton’s innings just after the batsman was switching to a higher gear. However, he too proved ineffective once Taylor and McCullum got going. The onslaught meant there was no respite in the southern hemisphere for West Indies after a month of battering in the subcontinent.

Postecoglou must unleash Johnston

With Ange Postecoglou having endured something of an injury crisis during the early stages of his managerial career at Celtic, the 56-year-old manager will undoubtedly be delighted that a number of his first-team squad are finally returning to full fitness at Parkhead.

Indeed, Mikey Johnston, Josip Juranovic, Georgios Giakoumakis and James McCarthy were all available for selection against St. Johnstone on Saturday after varying lengths of spells spent on the sidelines due to injury, while Christopher Jullien and James Forrest are set to return to first-team training in the coming weeks.

Postecoglou himself recently commented on his excitement regarding the return of Johnston, stating after Saturday’s 2-0 win: “I was really pleased to see Mikey back because he looked really good in pre-season. I know how talented he is but the key for him was to get his body healthy and to be really patient with him.

“He’s a talented player and he’s now getting more game time. The way we play I know he can have a huge impact for us, he just needs to stay healthy and keep improving his game.”

It is easy to see why the 56-year-old appears so happy with the return of the 22-year-old, as, over his brief 8-minute cameo against Ferencvarosi in midweek, the £900k-rated man highly impressed, managing 13 touches of the ball, making one key pass, completing both of his attempted dribbles, creating one big chance and hitting the target with his only shot at goal.

These metrics saw the £9k-per-week forward earn a SofaScore match rating of 7.7, ranking him as the third-best player to feature in the match.

As such, while it is true that Johnston has failed to ever really cement a starting spot in the Celtic side after breaking through into the first team, with his highest number of league appearances in one season being 14 back in 2018/19, Postecoglou simply must unleash the 22-year-old in the coming weeks, as now would finally appear to be the time when the winger can have a real impact within the Bhoys side.

Tripura fought back on the second day in Agartala by curtailing Himachal Pradesh’s first-innings lead to 45 and lost only one wicket for the score of 93 in the second innings. Tripura’s bowling was led by 15-year-old offspinner Viki Saha, who finished with 5 for 53.Himachal started the day at 26 for 1 and soon after the second-wicket partnership crossed 50, Saha dismissed Paras Dogra and Abhinav Bali within three deliveries. A set Prashant Chopra added to Himachal’s woes, as he was run-out in the next over for 43, leaving them struggling at 77 for 4.The captain Rishi Dhawan soothed their nerves with a fighting fifty, but he didn’t have many partners to support him. Amit Kumar and Bipul Sharma left for low scores before the stand between Dhawan and Karanveer Singh gave them a lead.Karanveer struck three fours in his 15 before he was trapped lbw by Saha. Dhawan reached his seventh first-class fifty and struck nine fours and a six in his 95-ball 67. Once he fell at the score of 179, Saha wrapped up the innings by bowling Mohinderraj Sharma out for 6.Tripura’s second innings was led by KB Pawan’s unbeaten 56. Subhrajit Roy was stumped for 13 before Pawan and Abhijit Dey ended the day with a 48-run lead.

Roy struck his maiden first-class ton and was later dismissed for 134 by Ashish Reddy at the score of 285. Assam’s tail had been exposed but they didn’t let Hyderabad capitalise on that as Gokul and Jamaluddin Mohammad batted till stumps. Gokul brought up his third ton in first-class matches to stay unbeaten on 126 and Mohammad was not out on 52 in their stand of 137.
ScorecardKerala more than doubled their first-day score to put on a strong 486 against Andhra on the second day in Kannur. Robert Fernandez and Sachin Baby started the day and completed half-centuries to build on their overnight score of 236.Baby was retired hurt on 60 at the score of 343 which brought Vinoop Manoharan on the pitch but he fell for a quick 27 to become Paidikalva Vijaykumar’s third wicket. Baby came back at the score of 373 but could add only two more to is score. Fernandez also fell an over later when Shaik Basha bowled him for 88. Padmanabhan Prasanth added to Andhra’s worries by scoring 50 with Chovvakkaran Shahid (37) for the eight wicket and 40 with Prasanth Parameswaran. The last two wickets fell in the same over as Vijaykumar, Shankara Rao and Basha picked up three wickets each.Andhra played 15 overs till stumps to score 42 without losing a wicket.

Goa added 36 as Saurabh Bandekar took his score from 39 to 64, while Goa lost the remaining two wickets to Ram Dayal, who finished with 5 for 85, his fourth first-class five-for.J&K were given an early jolt on the first ball of the innings when Harshad Gadekar dismissed Shubham Khajuria.
