McCone helps Canterbury secure home preliminary final

A round-up of the Ford Trophy matches that took place on March 26, 2014

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Mar-2014A six-wicket haul by Ryan McCone sent Northern Districts crashing to 119, thereby helping Canterbury secure a home preliminary final following their six-wicket win at the Hagley Oval. Canterbury chased down the target within 27 overs and the two teams will meet again on Sunday, with the winner progressing to the final and the loser to meet the winner of the second preliminary final. It could have been worse for Northern Districts, who were reduced to 40 for 8 at one stage. Hamish Bennett started the slide by removing the openers before McCone, the right-arm seamer, took three middle-order wickets. Mitchell Santer witnessed his partners collapsing around him and the only player to offer support was the No.10 Anurag Verma who scored 19. The pair added 68, with Santer scoring 61 before he was bowled by Bennett. McCone cleaned up the tail to finish with his best figures of 6 for 19. Canterbury were carried by a third-wicket stand of 79 between Rob Nicol and Dean Brownlie.Auckland came through by five runs in a high-scoring game against Wellington at Basin Reserve. Chasing 303, Wellington were in a good position at 277 in the 46th over but collapsed to 297. Colin de Grandhomme followed up his 84 with 4 for 48 to cap a fine all-round performance.Auckland were given a good start by the openers Tim McIntosh and Anaru Kitchen, who added 86. McIntosh scored 73 but the most vital contribution came from de Gradhomme who smashed 84 from just 53 balls with nine fours and three sixes to power Auckland towards 300. Wellington began steadily in the chase and a third-wicket stand of 97 between Tom Blundell and Stephen Murdoch put them on course. De Grandhomme removed Murdoch for 71 but Wellington took back the initiative with another stand of 97 between James Franklin and Grant Elliott. Franklin’s fall at 55 sparked a collapse, with de Grandhomme taking two lower-order wickets and effecting a run out to highlight Auckland’s dramatic comeback. The win means that Auckland will get to host the second preliminary final against Wellington on Sunday. At the University Oval in Dunedin, Jesse Ryder smashed 96 off just 69 balls to set up Otago’s 106-run win over Central Districts. After being put in to bat, Otago were at an unsteady 80 for 4 before Ryder cut loose. He added 41 with Ryan ten Doeschate and then 72 for the seventh wicket with Mark Craig. He smashed five sixes in his knock before he was dismissed by Tarun Nethula, who took 4 for 35. Central Districts never recovered after they lost their openers to Bradley Scott by the fourth over. Only Kruger van Wyk resisted, with 34, but the middle order collapsed to Ian Butler and Craig who shared seven wickets between them. Central Districts crashed to 127 in the 30th over.

Trott was right to stand his ground – Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen has backed the actions of Jonathan Trott in standing his ground during their run-out mix-up at Centurion, which ended a partnership of 145 that was taking England towards a comfortable draw in the opening Test against South Africa.Pietersen was on 81 when, shortly after tea, he pushed the ball into the off side and sprinted for a single, but didn’t realise that Friedel de Wet, the bowler, could intercept the ball in his follow through. Pietersen continued to charge up the pitch which left Trott with a decision whether to sacrifice himself or preserve his wicket.Trott chose the latter by dropping his bat in the crease and continued to use up valuable time in a stand with Paul Collingwood before falling to the second new-ball to begin England’s late collapse.”There wasn’t a run there, he did the right thing and I was the one sent packing,” Pietersen said. “Hopefully it won’t happen again because we enjoyed batting together. We were trying to keep the South Africans quiet but they had a good go at us the last hour.”It was just a case of rotating the strike. We had been doing it the whole the game and it was a case of playing the ball into the off side and running. I couldn’t really hear him [Trott] shouting and the South Africans were also shouting. It was my mistake, I hold my hands up, but these things happen and hopefully we can form a great partnership again.””It wasn’t something I wanted to do. Trotty and I were doing so well for the team and we were in such a comfortable position to take something really positive out of the Test. But we still got a positive draw out of it and these mistakes happen and hopefully they won’t happen again.”Pietersen wants TV to check no-balls

Kevin Pietersen has followed England coach Andy Flower in saying that TV technology should be used to check for no-balls with every delivery. Replays showed Pietersen was bowled off a no-ball in the first innings at Centurion and he said such moments can change a Test.

“I think something needs to be done about it,” he said. “If you’re going to use the ‘referral’ system the way we’re using it now it should go all the way.

“You can win and lose Test matches on no-balls. For a [non-striking] batsman to be standing and watching whether the bowler is bowling a no-ball and then concentrating on the other end doesn’t seem good to me.

“If Graham Onions had lost his wicket to a no-ball in the last over of a Test match and we’d lost the Test series, with the technology we have nowadays there’s no excuse for it.”

Much is always made of whenever Pietersen returns to Durban but he admits this Test “will be special”. Ten years ago he played against the England touring side, captained by Nasser Hussain, for KwaZulu-Natal, scoring an unbeaten 61 at No. 9 alongside figures of 4 for 141. It was during that time that he began enquiring about opportunities in county cricket and the rest, as they say, is history.”It is incredible. But life changes, these things happen,” he said. “Who knows where all of us are going to be in 10 years’ time. My life has turned around in a big, big way from running around here as a kid to where I am now. I love it; I would never ever change anything.”However, he insisted the prospect of making Test runs where he used to play as a youngster is no different than any other occasion he has played for England. “I love getting Test runs at The Oval; I love getting Test runs at Lord’s; I love getting Test runs anywhere, I don’t mind. Here is absolutely no different.”But Graeme Smith hopes that Pietersen’s latest homecoming can be used as an advantage by South Africa. “If he is carrying any emotions in this Test the better for us,” he said. This Test will also bring the curtain down on a difficult year for Pietersen. He began as England captain before losing the position after the fall-out with Peter Moores and Pietersen was his normal, strutting self on the Caribbean tour. Then he was troubled by the Achilles injury – the first major injury problem in his career – and he missed the final three Ashes Test and only returned to action last month.”I just see every day as a challenge,” he said. “To be back playing Test cricket is something that I love doing and something I’m very fortunate to be doing. It’s not something I take for granted. 2009 hasn’t been the most fantastic time but I’m still playing cricket for England, we all love playing for England and are very privileged. This year hasn’t been fun, but hey-ho, life isn’t always good.”

No segundo tempo, Carille mandou o time para cima. Tirou Ralf e colocou Gustagol.

Eagles scrape through in low-scoring thriller

A round-up of the latest round of the Pro50 Championship games

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Mar-2014Mashonaland Eagles were made to sweat chasing 89, winning the thriller against Midwest Rhinos at Kwekwe Sports Club by three wickets. A five-wicket haul by the left-arm spinner Kudakwashe Bhasikoro had reduced the Eagles to 75 for 7, but the eighth-wicket pair of Brighton Mugochi and Samuel Mwakayeni saw through the nervy moments to take them home. Two bowlers, from either side, picked up exact match figures of 5 for 17, but it was Tafadzwa Muzarawetu’s that was the match-winning one. The Rhinos’ openers had added 28 before Nathan Waller took two quick wickets. Muzarawetu, the right-arm seamer who was making his List A debut, then cut through the middle and lower order to round off the innings in 31 overs. Bradley Wadlen’s 28 was the highest score. It turned out to be the highest of the match as the Eagles struggled. They were coasting at 37 for 0 before Bhasikoro struck, with Walden chipping in with two wickets. At 75 for 7, it was anyone’s game but the Eagles scraped through.A combined bowling performance helped Southern Rocks beat Matabeleland Tuskers by 33 runs at Queens Sports Club. Keith Dabengwa and John Nyumbu took seven wickets between them to restrict Rocks to 216. Rocks progressed steadily to 60 for 1, but Nyumbu’s strikes reduced them to 67 for 4. A fifth-wicket stand of 76 between Tendai Chisoro and Luke Jongwe revived them before Dabengwa ran through the lower order. The Tuskers were in a spot of bother at 53 for 3 and needed a sizeable partnership. Godwill Mamhiyo made a half-century but lacked support as the innings ended at 183. The Rocks sit on top of the table with 19 points.

Villa’s Douglas Luiz impressed v Liverpool

Steven Gerrard has enjoyed his start to life as a Premier League manager after swapping Rangers for Aston Villa last month, with his side winning three of their first four league games under the 41-year-old.

Game number five was a return to Anfield for the former Liverpool captain, for whom the Villa boss made more than 700 appearances as a player.

Despite a resolute performance from the Midlands outfit, the Villans lost out to Jurgen Klopp’s side as Mo Salah’s 67th-minute penalty proved the difference on Saturday. Defensively the visitors looked solid, but one player in particular who stood out was Douglas Luiz.

The 23-year-old was a real presence in the middle of the park for the visitors, completing 84% of his passes as well as having 65 touches. Furthermore, the Brazilian had a 100% long ball accuracy and also completed all of his attempted dribbles whilst winning 75% of his duels.

According to SofaScore, Luiz’s fellow midfielder John McGinn struggled to replicate similar numbers to his teammate. The Scotsman had a 72% passing accuracy whilst also having fewer touches (56).

Moreover, McGinn lost possession 19 times compared to Luiz’s 11, meaning that the 27-year-old lost the ball every 2.9 touches as opposed to every 5.9 touches for the Brazilian.

The Scotsman has been one of Gerrard’s standout performers since the 41-year-old took charge of Villa last month, averaging a performance rating of 7.95 prior to the Liverpool contest, according to SofaScore. However, the midfielder could only manage a 6.3/10 rating against the Reds, making it his worst performance under the new manager by some margin.

As for Luiz, it’s certainly promising to see the Brazilian getting a run of matches under Gerrard after endured a mixed start to the season, missing games against West Ham, Southampton and Brighton.

Alongside McGinn and Marvelous Nakamba, it appears that the 23-year-old is part of the Villa manager’s preferred midfield trio, with that particular combination now starting the last three games. Today’s performance suggests that Luiz is making the most of the chances being handed to him by Gerrard.

Abdur Razzak returns to the squad after pulling out of the home series against Sri Lanka with a hamstring injury•AFP

Bangladesh have gone for the tried and tested in their 15-man World Twenty20 squad, as there are no major inclusions or exclusions. Mushfiqur Rahim will lead the best available team with a proper spread of allrounders, as well as specialist batsmen and bowlers.Chief selector Faruque Ahmed has called the inclusion of Sabbir Rahman, who made his debut against Sri Lanka by scoring 26 in the second Twenty20, as an opportunity for someone with potential in this format. Sabbir gets his chance after hitting six T20 fifties in the domestic competition last season.”The Bangladesh team is a blend of experience and youth,” Faruque said. “We have considered the fact that this was a world event and experience was necessary as well as giving opportunity to youngsters like Mominul Haque and Sabbir Rahman who have the potential to excel in the shortest format.”Someone like Arafat Sunny, who has impressed everyone and had been performing consistently at domestic level, had to miss out because we needed to have that balance.”Sunny misses out because Abdur Razzak, the senior left-arm spinner, has been deemed fit enough to play the tournament after he had suffered a hamstring injury earlier this month.”We have a lot of depth in our bowling. There are three pace bowlers and a seaming all-rounder. However, in our conditions spin will be the main strength and we are well covered in that area with Shakib Al Hasan, Abdur Razzak and Sohag Gazi.”I also believe this is an excellent fielding side and that was evident in the recent Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka.”Bangladesh open their World T20 campaign against Afghanistan on March 16, in the first round of the competition.Squad: Mushfiqur Rahim (capt), Tamim Iqbal, Anamul Haque, Shamsur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Mominul Haque, Nasir Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Mahmudullah, Abdur Razzak, Sohag Gazi, Mashrafe Mortaza, Farhad Reza, Rubel Hossain, Al-Amin Hossain.
