Howey: Deadline day move to Sunderland possible for Jebbison

Former professional footballer Steve Howey believes that Daniel Jebbison possibly could make a move to Sunderland late in the transfer window.

The Northern Echo reported that Sunderland were keen on a loan move for the Sheffield United forward, but it would rely on Will Grigg being moved on and also getting the Blades to lower their financial demands.

Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol also posted on Twitter that three Premier League clubs were interested in signing the striker permanently, with Everton named as one of those clubs.

The 18-year-old featured for the Sheffield United first team on four occasions last season, scoring one goal while he also scored four goals in four games in the FA Youth Cup.

This season, Jebbison has only featured for the Blades in their Carabao Cup meeting with Carlisle United, but Steve Howey believes that he could possibly make a move to the Stadium of Light late on in the transfer window.

Howey exclusively told the Transfer Tavern: “Again, it’s one of these where, will it just get over the line kind of the last day of the transfer window? Possibly. I don’t think it’s great for the player when this kind of thing goes on as well. You’d rather think, well, where am I? Am I stopping? Am I going? What’s happening?

“It kind of unsettles him, it unsettles his family, they don’t know if they’re going in that house or tomorrow am I moving somewhere completely different in the country.

“I think all he has to think about is just concentrating on his football and he’s only got a week left to actually put his mind at rest and he knows exactly where he’s going.”

James Franklin, the New Zealand fast bowler, hopes to start the 2008-09 domestic season on time and wants to last the whole season without breaking down.Franklin last played a Test for New Zealand in December 2006 and he hasn’t appeared in one-dayers since the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. Since then he missed the World Twenty20, the tour of South Africa, the home series against Bangladesh, and the home-and-away series against England. Franklin underwent surgery for a patella tendon injury in his right knee last November. He has just returned to New Zealand after playing three weeks of Twenty20 games and one-day cricket for Australian Capital Territory. He had also played in the Emerging Players tour to Queensland in July after being named among New Zealand Cricket’s [NZC] 20 contracted players in April.”It’s nice they’re [NZC] behind me, but first things first,” Franklin told the . “I’ll be stoked if I can start the season on time and get through the whole summer. That would be a massive tick in the box for me.”Franklin, however, said he wasn’t looking as far as a New Zealand call-up just yet. “If I’m feeling well with no worries then you never know but obviously a lot of time has passed since I played for New Zealand,” he said. “The guys who’ve come in the past year have done well. It’s all competition among one another and that can only be a good thing for New Zealand cricket.”

A century from the veteran Brad Hodge drove Victoria to an easy eight-wicket win over South Australia but the contributions from their two new men were just as pleasing for the Bushrangers. Hodge finished unbeaten on 102 as Victoria comfortably overhauled the Redbacks’ 5 for 239 with 41 balls to spare. But the success was set up by a confident 60 from 69 balls provided by Chris Rogers, who was playing his first game for his new state. Rogers switched during the off-season from Western Australia, where he was frustrated at not being picked in the one-day team, and he immediately showed Victoria his limited-overs potential.Rogers and Rob Quiney combined for a 71-run opening stand that dulled the impact of Shaun Tait, who took the new ball in his first state match since walking away from the game in January. They also fended off Tait’s new-ball partner Allan Wise, who last year was a Victorian and was lining up for the Redbacks for the first time.South Australia’s newcomers, including another former Victoria player, Michael Klinger, who made 17, failed to have the impact of the fresh faces in the Bushrangers line-up. Jon Holland, the left-arm orthodox spinner making his state debut in the absence of Bryce McGain and Cameron White, collected a wicket in his first over, finished with 2 for 44, and was credited by his captain David Hussey with changing the match.Holland was the pick of Victoria’s bowlers, who conceded 79 to the opener Daniel Harris and 59 to Cameron Borgas, although importantly neither man scored at a strike-rate above 80. Aaron O’Brien, the former New South Wales allrounder, made an unbeaten 23 and grabbed a wicket in his first game for South Australia, while the out-of-favour batsman Mark Cosgrove battled for 23.

Michael Vaughan, the former England captain, has said he was lucky to receive a central contract from the ECB despite not scoring the runs to justify his place. Vaughan was among the 12 players to receive a contract.”I think it has shown a hell of a lot of faith,” Vaughan told the BBC. “I think they [ECB] have just repaid the fact that if I get back into form I think I can still play a huge part in the England cricket team.”Vaughan stepped down as captain last month following the Test defeat at Edgbaston – which handed South Africa the series – and opted out of the final Test at The Oval.Since May 2007, Vaughan has averaged 36.25 from 18 Tests, with three hundreds. “But over the last year and a half I have had some excellent innings,” he said. “I have had some good times with the bat not too long ago.”I want to play for England – that is my goal over the next 12 months, to make sure I get that one last crack. I know it will be the last crack because you don’t get a second crack when you get to the age of 33-34. It will be one last chance to hopefully go out there and try to score some Test hundreds.”I need some runs. That’s not something I am desperate to do, I’m just going to try to let it happen. Sometimes if you are too desperate to do something it goes further and further away from you.”

Sky Sports’ Bridge tips Man City to eventually sign Lewandowski

Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge believes that it is only Manchester City who have the money to afford Robert Lewandowski.

Sky Sports were told that Lewandowski is happy at Bayern Munich but wants a move to another top European club before he is 35.

Lewandowski, who turns 33 on his next birthday (21 August), has been in fine goalscoring form for Bayern Munich, scoring 297 times in 331 matches. The Poland international is second on the all-time top goal scorers in Bundesliga, with 276 goals.

Last season alone he managed to score an incredible 48 goals in all competitions.

The Sky Sports report also says that Bayern Munich value Lewandowski at more than £100m, with Michael Bridge believing it’s surely only Manchester City who have the money for the striker, telling Football FanCast: “Is it only City? I mean, surely it’s only City and we know how much Pep loved him at Bayern Munich, but no other club has the money to pay.”

City have been linked with a move for Harry Kane throughout the summer and there were also reports of them being interested in Fiorentina striker Dusan Vlahovic, but journalist Fabrizio Romano posted on his Twitter account that the Fiorentina president Commisso had said: “I don’t know what’s gonna happen but I’m planning to keep Vlahovic this summer, I want him to stay. But if we receive a bid of €100m, I’ll think about it.”

West Ham fans criticise Dawson performance

A number of West Ham supporters have criticised Craig Dawson’s performance at Newcastle United on Sunday despite their opening weekend win.

The Hammers were back in Premier League action for the first time since May, with a trip to St James’ Park commencing their 2021/22 campaign.

The hope is that David Moyes’ side match last season’s sixth-placed finish, for which Europa League football was achieved.

West Ham found themselves 1-0 down early on, with Callum Wilson pouncing after good work down the right from All Saint-Maximin. Aaron Cresswell equalised soon after his goal was eventually awarded after initially being disallowed for offside, only for Jacob Murphy to head the Magpies back into the lead.

A hugely entertaining game saw Moyes’ men produce a superb comeback, however, with Said Benrahma, Tomas Soucek and Michael Antonio putting them 4-2 up with second half goals.

Despite the Irons’ victory, though, Dawson had a quiet game overall and was at times run ragged by Allan Saint-Maximin. The 31-year-old lost several duels on Tyneside and was dribbled past once, while also failing to execute an accrurate cross (Sofascore).

These West Ham fans took to Twitter to criticise Dawson’s “comical” performance, with one angry supporter even labelling him a “donkey”.

Moore and Mitchell seal 10-wicket rout

John Ward reports on the fourth day of the Championship match between Worcestershire and Glamorgan at New Road

John Ward at Worcester20-Jul-2008Worcestershire 457 for 8 dec and 102 for 0 (Moore 58*, Mitchell 44*) beat Glamorgan 279 (Imran 5-50) and 279 (Ali 6-58)
ScorecardIn mid-afternoon, after some determined resistance from the doomed Glamorgan, Worcestershire completed their third championship victory of the season and moved to second place in Division Two of the championship. They owed much to their dynamic quartet of seam bowlers, who bowled with admirable skill and persistence on what remained to the end a sound batting wicket.Glamorgan began the day with 189 for 7 following on, just 11 runs ahead. Perhaps local supporters doubted their team’s ability to finish off the match quickly, or else they were desperate to ensure that victory was completed, because several hundred of them turned up for play that might well have been over within half an hour. But the overnight pair of James Harris and Jason Gillespie continued their stubborn defiance of Worcestershire’s impressive pace attack, and soon took the score past 200. Despite a couple of frenzied appeals, they rarely looked in trouble, and every now and then played a handsome drive that reached the boundary. It took almost an hour before the first wicket fell, as Harris groped outside the off stump to a rather wide ball from Mason and was given out caught behind for a very creditable 43. The pair had added 79 for the eighth wicket and successfully avoided the innings defeat. Still the visitors refused to roll over, and it was not until Kabir Ali took the new ball that he was able to break through the defences of David Harrison (7) and remove his off stump. Finally the last man Dean Cosker hung around for a while, until he was caught at the wicket for 8, off Kabir again. Gillespie was left stranded on 49, the highest score of the innings, off 91 balls, an admirable mixture of steadiness and well-judged strokes, most notably a powerful off-drive to the boundary off Kabir with the new ball. For once, the new star Imran Arif had failed to feature, but Kabir stepped in with six wickets, a fine performance that had locals calling for a recall to England colours.By a curious coincidence, not only did both Glamorgan innings total 279, but in both the seventh wicket had fallen at 165. The last three wickets had thus added 114 runs each time, rather an indictment of the top order, especially those who had reached double figures (in nine instances out of twelve in the two innings), yet failed to go on to a major score. Worcestershire needed 102 to win.It had taken the home side 93 minutes to wrap up the innings, and they thus had an awkward period to survive before lunch. Daryl Mitchell and Steven Moore did so solidly while adding eight runs, but even after the break they left nothing to chance and took a while to get going. In the tenth over Moore twice pulled Gillespie for four and then cut him for another, and they were away.Moore at 37 was dropped at slip off Harris, while Mitchell on 27 lofted a drive that just cleared mid-off, but the end result was never in doubt. Glamorgan just did not have the bowling firepower to upset Worcestershire. Moore reached his fifty with a big six over long-on, over the new stand at the Diglis End, off Cosker; it took him 75 balls.Shortly afterwards, Mitchell cut Alex Wharf for four to win the match by ten wickets – except that, as they had completed a single before the ball went over the boundary, under the dubious new law he was only credited with one. He finished on 44 to Moore’s 58. Unusually, there was not a single extra conceded in this innings, a small but definite credit to Glamorgan. The emergence of Imran has caused some excitement at Worcester. With Imran to add to their already impressive international pace attack – imported though it may be – of Kabir, Jones and Mason, they now boast a line-up stronger than many Division One teams this season. Their ambitions and expectations are high, and they confidently expect to return to the top league next season.A last note on Imran: Worcestershire’s chief executive Mark Newton announced that he has today signed a contract with the county for 2009 and 2010, conditional to his obtaining a British passport, which he believes to be imminent.
