Ilias Chair stole the show vs Everton

With Mark Warburton having seen his Queen Park Rangers side suffer something of a setback in the Championship over the last eight days, with the Rs losing their first and second league fixtures of the season in back to back matches, the 59-year-old manager would have undoubtedly been hoping for a positive performance in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening to get his side back on track.

And, despite their opponents being Premier League side Everton, QPR duly delivered for their manager, boasting 61% possession in the fixture, completing 197 more passes than the Toffees and winning 13 more duels than Rafael Benitez’s side, with the scoreline reading 2-2 at 90 minutes.

Warburton’s men then demonstrated incredible composure and maturity in the subsequent penalty shootout, scoring all eight of their spot-kicks, meaning that Tom Davies’ miss sent the Rs through to the fourth round of the competition for the first time since 2008.

As such, rather predictably when considering the result, a number of the west London side highly impressed in the match, with Charlie Austin – who scored both of the Rs’ two goals in the clash – Christopher Willock, Yoann Barbet and Seny Dieng all turning in dominant displays against the Toffees.

However, it was 23-year-old attacking midfielder Ilias Chair who, from a statistical point of view, stole the show against Everton.

Three key passes

Over his 76 minutes on the pitch, Chair was arguably QPR’s most important player, with the Morocco international continually causing the Everton midfield and defence problems with both his creativity and attacking inclination.

Indeed, the £3.6m-rated man ended the fixture with one assist to his name – which came after a delightful piece of skill on the left-wing, before putting the ball square on Charlie Austin’s forehead between two Everton defenders – as well as making three key passes, completing both of his attempted crosses and hitting the target with 100% of his shots.

The player Warburton dubbed a “lively” talent also managed 53 touches of the ball, completed 86% of his passes and made one tackle during his spell on the pitch.

These returns saw the £7.1k-per-week midfielder earn a SofaScore match rating of 7.2 in the fixture, something which, considering the level of the opposition, only further highlights the progress Chair has made under Warburton in the last few seasons – with the 23-year-old clearly boasting the ability to play a major role in QPR’s push for a top-six finish in the Championship this season.

Celtic could sign Robbie Brady on a free

Celtic have had a mixed start to the new season, with Ange Postecoglou’s Hoops side playing swashbuckling attacking football but looking lackadaisical at the back.

They have also had to contend with a host of injuries in recent weeks with Kyogo Furuhashi, James Forrest, Greg Taylor and Callum McGregor all on the sidelines in midweek.

What’s the word?

One player who has been consistently linked with a move to Celtic this year is Robbie Brady.

The left-sided player became a free agent in the summer after his contract with Burnley expired which means he can now be signed for nothing.

He wasn’t able to find a new club for himself over the last few months but it now appears as though the Bhoys are the frontrunners for his signature.

Glasgow Times suggest (via Burnley Express) that Swansea have ended their interest, leaving Celtic with a free run at signing the 29-year-old.

Forget Taylor

One of Brady’s biggest strengths is undoubtedly his versatility. The Irishman can feature on either wing and is also capable of playing as a wing-back.

With that in mind, he could be the player who finally allows Postecoglou to move on from Taylor.

The Scottish defender is currently out injured and is set to undergo shoulder surgery, which has left an opening for the likes of Josip Juranovic and Adam Montgomery to exploit.

Boli Bolingoli has been left out of Celtic’s Europa League squad but surprisingly appeared against Livingston on Sunday.

Brady. however, could improve on the Belgian as an attacking full-back or wing-back if he joins Celtic in the coming weeks or months.

Although his attacking abilities comfortably outweigh his defensive attributes, the Irishman could be a very useful weapon on the left side of the pitch.

A review from his former teammate Stephen Quinn is particularly telling in this argument, with Brady’s compatriot saying: “He is just an exceptionally talented footballer and I think that left wing-back position suits him because he is coming into plays, he will always attack.”

Possessing a wonderful delivery of the football, Brady feels like an ideal player that Postecoglou will have in his side. The Australian loves an attacking style and the former Burnley winger would undoubtedly improve their ranks.

He’d not only bolster a side of the pitch which is weak at the moment, but he’d also provide the Bhoys with huge experience.

Celtic have already signed one experienced former Premier League talent in James McCarthy; they must now lure Brady to Paradise too. Available on a free transfer, this would be incredibly low risk.

AND in other news, £6k-p/w gem has seen his value rise by 900% after leaving Celtic, he’s “very unique”…

CONFIANÇA NO BRASILEIRO

Quem escolhe as peças é o treinador.

Quem ganha, afinal, é o time- sentenciou.

Aston Villa: Fans fume at Wesley comments

Many Aston Villa fans have been fuming on Twitter, following comments from Wesley suggesting that he could leave the club upon return from his loan spell at Club Brugge [Nieuwsblad via Sport Witness].

Enjoying an injury-ridden spell at Aston Villa so far, the Brazilian has registered seven goal contributions in 26 appearances; six goals and one assist [Transfermarkt].

Now on loan at Club Brugge after finally returning to fitness, he has suggested he could be open to leaving the club at the end of his loan spell in a recent interview.

Speaking to Nieuwsblad, the 24-year-old stated: “After this year I will be under contract with Aston Villa for another 2 years. I may return, I may go to another club.” [Nieuwsblad via Sport Witness]

In light of this news, no wonder loads of Aston Villa diehards took to social media to vent their frustration at the comments from their player – while he is away temporarily, he is still a Villa Park employee, and really shouldn’t be so open about wanting to seek pastures new.

Forget Struijk: Leeds’ Harrison was poor v Liverpool

In a game marred by a bad injury to Harvey Elliott, Leeds United endured yet another disappointing afternoon in the Premier League as they lost 3-0 at home to Liverpool.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side went two goals behind before Pascal Struijk was sent off for his challenge on Elliott, and Sadio Mane would later rub salt into the wounds in the dying embers of the game.

While Struijk’s tackle and whether it was deserving of a red card will no doubt the main talking point – Gary Neville on co-commentary for Sky Sports insisted that the severity of the injury swayed the decision – it was Jack Harrison’s performance that let Bielsa down the most.

The winger has endured a frustrating campaign thus far, failing to score or assist in the Premier League at all, and was once again well below-par at Elland Road on Sunday afternoon.

As per Sofascore, he lost four of the five duels that he was involved in, made just 15 passes (less than Illan Meslier) and conceded possession on ten separate occasions – only three others lost the ball more, but they all played the full 90 minutes.

Harrison also had no shots on goal and saw only one of his four crosses meet its intended target, and perhaps much more frustratingly, seemed to leave left-back Junior Firpo high and dry on many occasions.

Whether it was a ploy from Bielsa to have him stay upfield to try and keep Trent Alexander-Arnold back or not, it back-fired spectacularly, with Harrison failing to come back and help out his left-back – he made no tackles or interceptions as Firpo was left to deal with Liverpool’s rampaging right-hand side, and he didn’t really lay a glove on the excellent Mohamed Salah.

It was no surprise then that he was eventually hooked mid-way through the second-half – the second time he has gone off this season – with Dan James coming on, and with the former Manchester United now in the building, Harrison has a real job on his hands to keep his place in the starting XI.

And, writing in his post-match player ratings for Leeds Live, Beren Cross gave him a five, saying: “Did not give Alexander-Arnold a headache going in either direction throughout the game. Had the odd half-opening in the final third, but never found the delivery or final act to turn it into something dangerous.”

So while Struijk’s red card might open him up to some criticism, it was Harrison’s woeful performance on the left that arguably made him Leeds’ real villain on the day.

Meanwhile, Leeds are plotting a January transfer swoop for this star…

Supreme Court relief for Pawar, five top board officials

India’s Supreme Court has stayed criminal proceedings against former BCCI president Sharad Pawar and five other board officials

Cricinfo staff05-Dec-2008India’s Supreme Court has stayed criminal proceedings against former BCCI president Sharad Pawar and five other board officials. The order concerns a case of perjury – specifically, the production of a false affidavit – filed by Jagmohan Dalmiya. The BCCI decided last month to challenge the Kolkata High Court’s decision to order the initiation of criminal proceedings against the officials. The case is a fallout of Dalmiya’s expulsion from the BCCI.Apart from Pawar, the officials are Shashank Manohar, the BCCI president, Ratnakar Shetty, the chief administrative officer, Niranjan Shah, the former secretary, N Srinivasan, the current secretary, and Chirayu Amin, vice-president. Pawar was the board president when the matter went to court.Dalmiya, a former board president himself, filed a case of perjury against the officials in June 2007 for allegedly producing false documents in court relating to his expulsion in December 2006.The BCCI had filed an affidavit – signed by the six officials – in the High Court stating that the rule under which Dalmiya had been expelled from the BCCI had been registered as required with the Registrar of Societies in Chennai. Dalmiya then filed a case against the six officials alleging that the documents submitted in court were false and were produced with intent to mislead the court.

Ex-Southampton star hints at James Ward-Prowse release clause

Speaking exclusively to The Transfer Tavern on James Ward-Prowse’s future, former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer thinks he could have a release clause in his new contract.

Ward-Prowse was the subject of heavy interest from Aston Villa during the summer transfer window, with the Midlands club reportedly having a £25m bid turned down for the player.

The 26-year-old then went on to sign a new five-year deal while the window was still open to put an end to all the speculation, but Palmer reckons he could still leave in the near future and believes his latest contract may have a release clause in it.

“I think what’s happened with James is Aston Villa were in for him and a few other clubs, but nobody met the valuation that Southampton had on him,” the ex-Saint said.

“If the club comes in, offers you a new contract, they safeguard themselves by signing him on a new long-term contract, they put in a release clause of whatever that may be.

“I’m sure clubs will revisit Southampton over him time and time again. The release clause, I’m sure it will come out.”

All things considered, Southampton will probably be glad to see the back of the 2021 summer transfer window after being forced to sell a couple of key players.

During it, they lost both Danny Ings and Jannik Vestergaard to Premier League rivals and could have also watched Ward-Prowse depart.
