Karen Rolton will step down as captain of the Australian women’s team after the World Twenty20 in England this June. Jodie Fields, the vice-captain of the Twenty20 squad, will take over Rolton’s leadership role for the away series against England immediately after the tournament while Alex Blackwell will be her deputy.”Karen Rolton will captain the ICC World Twenty20 team in England but has decided that it’s time to hand over leadership to a new generation at the conclusion of the tournament,” Margaret Jennings, head of the women’s selection panel, said.”It’s a great credit to Karen and her leadership skills that she has decided to make this decision, which would not have been easy. She has provided a great opportunity for Jodie and Alex to continue building their leadership skills and she will also be there in England to support this hand-over.”Australia made two changes to the squad for the World Twenty20, bringing in Elyse Villani and Kirsten Pike. “There are two inclusions to the squad with Elyse Villani coming in and Kirsten Pike returning from injury which will add both youth and experience to the team,” Jennings said. “We’ve lost Emma Sampson and Leonie Coleman to retirement and Delissa Kimmince is the unlucky player to miss out on selection for this squad.”Kirsten’s been out for 18 months and we’re looking for her previous experience to help guide us through. Elyse Villani is a promising young batter who plays an extremely attacking style of game and she will get an opportunity to show what she is capable of in the short form of the game.”After the World Twenty20, Australia will play five ODIs, a Twenty20 and a Test against England and their squad for the tour was the same expect for one change – Rachael Haynes replacing Elyse Villani.”Haynes is a talented young left-hand batter who had a good National League season for Victoria and we see her as having a big future in Australian women’s cricket,” Jennings said. “She’s also a former captain of our national under-21 team, the Commonwealth Bank Shooting Stars so she comes in with some good experience under her belt as well.”Although our World Cup performance didn’t go according to how we planned in March, one of the good things to come out of it was that we did beat England twice which will give our squad some confidence heading into the series.”Squad for World Twenty20: Karen Rolton (capt), Sarah Andrews, Alex Blackwell, Jessica Cameron, Lauren Ebsary, Rene Farrell, Jodie Fields (vc), Shelley Nitschke, Erin Orborne, Ellyse Perry, Kirsten Pike, Leah Poulton, Lisa Sthalekar, Elyse VilaniSquad for England tour: Jodie Fields (capt), Karen Rolton, Sarah Andrews, Alex Blackwell (vc), Jessica Cameron, Lauren Ebsary, Rene Farrell, Shelley Nitschke, Erin Orborne, Ellyse Perry, Kirsten Pike, Leah Poulton, Lisa Sthalekar, Rachael Haynes.

Australia, spurred to a daunting total by a thumping opening partnership from Brad Haddin and Shane Watson, clinched a facile victory over Bangladesh in Nottingham. From the start it was apparent that Australia were going to dominate, what with Bangladesh’s medium-pacers leaking runs and Tamim Iqbal reprieving Haddin in the first over.Haddin and Watson – who slammed a 21-ball half-century – made Bangladesh pay and though Mahmudullah’s four wickets ensured Australia didn’t post an even more mammoth total, the favourites clearly had enough runs. Bangladesh’s top order chased hard, but following Shakib Al Hasan’s dismissal for a sprightly 54 in the 14th over the wheels fell off.Australia’s openers effectively nailed the match in eight overs. When the ball was new, the field in and the wicketkeeper up, both Haddin and Watson boldly chose to go over the top, twice lofting Syed Rasel over the onside for sixes in an over. Then, when the field spread out, the pair chipped and nudged it cleverly into the gaps to keep the board ticking over constantly, but also managed to find the fence whenever the bowlers dropped it short and wide. The fourth over went for 16, with Haddin and Watson each slamming sixes, and the fifth cost 22. By this time Watson and Haddin both were using their feet and wrists well. Watson dumped offspinner Naeem Islam for four and six in consecutive deliveries as Australia reached 86 in seven overs. Watson raised his half-century with another swipe over midwicket, the most profitable shot on this surface.Mahmudullah struck in a double-wicket over during which both openers picked out fielders in the deep. Enter Andrew Symonds and three sixes over midwicket, but after racing to 27 from 14 balls, he fell to Mahmudullah in the 13th over. Three deliveries later Mahmudullah ended Ricky Ponting’s scratchy innings and Australia had a new pair at the crease again.Where his team-mates all suffered, Mahmudullah returned figures of 4 for 37 and his role was instrumental in roping Australia in from what seemed a massive total. There was the usual flurry of heaves, hoicks and wickets during the final overs as Bangladesh snapped a 52-run stand between Michael Hussey and Michael Clarke and finished with a tidy last three overs.Bangladesh began their chase frenetically, taking 31 from the first two overs. In the first over Tamim larruped Nathan Bracken for 18, using his feet to launch a beautiful straight six. In the second over Junaid Siddique took Brett Lee for three boundaries, the most audacious being a swat over extra cover with Siddique a third down the track.Mitchell Johnson sent Siddique’s leg stump cartwheeling with a quick and straight delivery and Lee had his man when Tamim drove straight to mid-off in the fourth over. Then came an engrossing period where both sides battled for leverage. Mohammad Ashraful broke the shackles of a nervous start with three successive fours off Johnson, using his crease excellently to clear the infield on both sides.Bracken swung it back with three singles in the sixth over, but Shakib and Ashraful took boundaries off David Hussey; Tamim’s sweep was forceful while Ashraful’s reverse-paddle was gentle. In the next over Tamim paddled and drove James Hopes for boundaries and Ashraful sliced to third man.Following Ashraful’s dismissal for 26 to the first ball of Johnson’s next spell, Shakib clubbed Symonds’ first two deliveries for six, survived a stumping, and promptly creamed four through extra cover. His half-century needed just 25 deliveries. Shakib was the fourth to go and at the time Bangladesh were still in the hunt, but his dismissal was a hammer blow and the innings never recovered as Lee and Bracken strangled the life out of the lower order.

Leeds suffer Kalvin Phillips injury blow

Leeds United will once again be without Kalvin Phillips ahead of their Premier League clash against Wolves on Saturday afternoon.

What’s the story?

The 25-year-old was not involved in the matchday squad against Southampton last time out amid an injury which forced him to pull out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the international break.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the match against Wolves today, Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa said: “Kalvin is healthy, but he hasn’t competed for three weeks. If he played on Saturday it would be far too quick. After three weeks out, it’s necessary some more football training.

“And in this stage he’s done training sessions for recovery and physical preparation and progressive work with the ball. I think that to think of him for Saturday would be to bring him back too soon before he’s back at his best.”

Bielsa will be gutted

Make no mistake about it, no Phillips in this Leeds team makes them an absolute shadow of what they can be.

Including the two games that he has missed this season (against Southampton and the opening day at Manchester United), and the nine that he missed last year, the Whites have won just two matches and lost the other nine.

That speaks to a worrying level of reliance on the talismanic midfielder to control things in the engine room for the Whites, and his absence is a major loss of influence. For instance, his match average of 2.3 tackles is bettered only by defender Liam Cooper, which shows just how much bite Leeds lose when the England international isn’t in the midfield engine room.

Given the kind of rut in which Leeds find themselves, being without someone like Phillips is a hammer blow to Bielsa and is sure to leave the manager gutted that the 25-year-old won’t be able to make it for today’s game against a resurgent Wolves.

Meanwhile, Leeds must finally unleash this academy starlet…

Kolkata to have one captain and many 'strategists'

The Kolkata Knight Riders have released a statement that during a game the team would resort to a group of “strategists” who would report to one on-field captain while making decisions

The Kolkata Knight Riders have tried to put a lid on the controversy generated by John Buchanan’s theory of multiple captains by releasing a statement that during a game the team would resort to a group of “strategists” who would report to one on-field captain while making decisions. This move could be seen as a climbdown from coach Buchanan’s plan for more than one captain on the field but arguably the only difference now is that the term “captain” has been replaced by “strategist”.Despite this latest decision, team sources have told Cricinfo that a compromise formula could lead to Sourav Ganguly captaining the team in the first five games after which, based on the team’s position, the role will be open to others. After Buchanan’s radical theory stirred a controversy on the eve of the team’s departure to South Africa, Ganguly and Buchanan met at the residence of their franchise owner Shah Rukh Khan. Jai Mehta, who owns a stake in the team, was also present at the nearly four-hour long meeting.”Needless to say the term ‘multi-captains’ has raised a few eyebrows and questions. The idea is to have a set of strategists as is always the case classically in cricket, who will form a team of 4 to 5 core experts in the field of fielding, bowling, batting and data, etc,” the statement read. “These coaches or strategists will assist the one captain on field with their viewpoints on the game-plan set earlier or shoot from the hip as the case maybe.”The statement stressed that there would be only one captain, who would be fed with suggestions from this core group of strategists. “The captain for the team is one and only one as in the case of most sports. Just the roles which are there in the regular format of the game as the fielding expert, batting coaches, are being better defined to be able to give quick suggestions … All internal decisions are taken collectively by the core cricketing team which comprises John, Sourav, Matthew Mott (assistant coach) and a few others.””In Twenty20 there is so much happening that if you can ease the burden on one person, then that might be a good idea,” Mott said. “There are some great leaders in this franchise, and there is going to be a bit of a turnover of players during the tournament, so if you can share some of the responsibility around that might help. It happened unofficially last season to a certain extent.”The management has also made it clear that a final decision on the captain will only be taken after the team’s camp in South Africa. “As the team is not decided because of overseas venue changes, etc … we will take the call on the issue of captain, vice-captain, the team, post the sessions in South Africa, prior to the first game. Reason for doing so is not to shirk the issue of who is the captain but to announce all that together to make that a cohesive decision from the team management to avoid confusion like it has resulted right now,” the statement said.Kolkata will be training at Bloemfontein from April 5 and players will leave in various batches starting today.

Palace fans celebrate Rodney contract

Kaden Rodney has signed his first professional contract with Crystal Palace, the club have confirmed.

Rodney looks to be a versatile player, having been deployed at centre-back, right-back, defensive midfield and central midfield.

He’s made a total of 13 appearances for Palace’s Under-18s, scoring two goals and providing two assists (via Transfermarkt).

Rodney, now 17, has been at the South London club since he was eight years old.

What did Rodney have to say?

He described putting pen to paper as a ‘great moment’ but stressed that ‘now the hard work continues’, a great attitude to have on the signing of his first professional deal.

Manager Rob Quinn said the deal was ‘reward for his hard work and dedication during his time at the club’. He also believes Rodney is ‘extremely talented’ but ‘humble’.

Rodney follows in the footsteps of the eight academy talents who inked professional deals back in July.

Palace chose to tie down many of the players who’d been instrumental in their second-place finish in the Under-18s Premier League.

Here’s how supporters reacted to the club’s announcement tweet.

Strauss savours the purplest of patches

It’s a wonder there are any questions left to ask Andrew Strauss. His three first-day hundreds have meant he has never been far away from a camera or a notebook during the Tests in the Caribbean

It’s a wonder there are any questions left to ask Andrew Strauss. When he took on the England captaincy he was always going to become a regular with the media because of all the preview and post-match duties that surround a Test, but Strauss’s three first-day hundreds have meant he has never been far away from a camera or a notebook during the games themselves.Strauss, though, has been through enough tough times to know that he should enjoy the success while it lasts. His third ton of this series made it five in his last 12 innings dating back to his twin efforts in Chennai in December, as he moves up the list of England century-makers to be level with Denis Compton on 17. This latest century was very similar to those two innings in India, coming on a low, slow surface that is already suggesting it could offer more to the spinners as the game goes along.”It’s been an incredible little run for me, a purple patch,” Strauss said. “And having been through a couple of difficult patches in my career I suppose you appreciate them a little bit more, and maybe that makes you hungrier to take advantage when you are in good form.”This is the second time Strauss has registered three centuries in a series following his impressive efforts on the 2004-05 tour of South Africa. On that trip he was still a relatively fresh face to international cricket and each new attack he came up against had yet to work him out. They often fed his strengths square of the wicket, but slowly the top bowlers cottoned on to his weaker areas and exploited them. Now, though, his reinvention is seemingly complete and he is a batsman capable of responding to conditions.Whereas in Antigua and Barbados the drive and cut were in regular use, here it was more of a nurdle-and-nudge day for Strauss as a lack of pace made timing difficult and Chris Gayle set defensive fields. He still managed to score all around the wicket, but 67 singles in his unbeaten 139 show how hard he was made to work.”It’s a slow attritional wicket, but there are certainly signs of turn there in the evening session and on day one that’s a nice situation for us to have,” he said. “But we have to set the game up well, we’ve had a good first day but need to keep doing that. It’s going to be hard work again, we aren’t going rip through them, but I think we have the armoury to take those 20 wickets.”It was a hot day’s work as well with Strauss taking every opportunity to towel down. Owais Shah felt it more than most and for the second time in his short Test career he was forced to retire hurt with serious cramps that left him on a drip in the dressing room.”The conditions today were exceptionally hot and humid and they are the conditions when if anything is going to happen it will be here,” Strauss said. “He’s fine now, he’s been on a drip and the cramps have gone but it is a bit of an issue and he needs to work out how to manage it.”On the previous occasion cramps hit Shah in a Test, against India in Mumbai on his debut in March 2006, he was also batting alongside Strauss. If England are looking for promising omens, Strauss scored a hundred in that match and they won to famously square the series, with a little help from Johnny Cash.England have a lot to do if they are to repeat that performance and retain the Wisden Trophy, but once again their captain has provided the ideal start. His personal success may mean a few extra media duties, but if the runs keep flowing he won’t mind talking about it. What would make it even more special is, if the next time he speaks, he can reflect on victory as well.
