Crystal Palace want Eddie Nketiah

Crystal Palace could be set to add further reinforcements to Patrick Vieira’s first-team squad after being linked with a transfer move for Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail, the 22-year-old has informed Mikel Arteta that he wants to leave the club, with the Eagles and Bundesliga outfit Borussia Monchengladbach vying for his signature.

Nketiah has entered the final year of his contract in north London, meaning an exit in the upcoming January window could be on the cards.

The Mail’s report states that: “Eddie Nketiah has informed Arsenal he wants to leave the club, ending their hopes of persuading him to stay.

“Admirers include Germans Borussia Monchengladbach along with Crystal Palace, and he is also free to arrange a pre-contract with a foreign club from January 1.

“Alternatively, Arsenal could agree a cut-price deal for Nketiah in the January window, which represents their final chance to cash in through a sale.”

Fans would love him

A recent report by TransferMarketWeb claimed the England U21 record-breaker could be available for as little as €12m (£10m) this winter due to his contract situation, a fee that could prove to be an absolute bargain in years to come.

He was dubbed “so incredibly prolific” by football scout Jacek Kulig after a string of impressive performances for Arsenal, but Nketiah has found opportunities hard to come by in recent months.

The youngster received just 14 starts in all competitions for the capital club last term and has seen his playing time slashed even further by Mikel Arteta this time around.

Despite only featuring from the off on two occasions this season – both in the Carabao Cup – Nketiah has continued to show his class, scoring on both occasions, including a delightful goal against Leeds United last time out.

His turn of pace, clinical finishing and tactical intelligence make him a nightmare for defenders and a hugely exciting prospect.

Nketiah’s arrival at Selhurst Park would be a significant coup for Palace and is an acquisition that the supporters would surely love to see, adding another talented, highly-promising star to Patrick Vieira’s new-look squad.

Gautam Gambhir is confident he will recover in time for the Champions Trophy from his injury that has kept him out of the ongoing tri-series in Sri Lanka. He had to pull out on the eve of India’s first match because of a groin strain, which he had aggravated during a nets session.”I am going to get fit before the Champions Trophy for sure,” Gambhir told Cricinfo in Bangalore, where he is undergoing rest and rehabilitation. “It’s a groin strain, so it would have taken me a week to 10 days – and our first game is on the 26th [in the Champions Trophy]. And I want to get fit before that.”His withdrawal from the tri-series was more of a precautionary measure: India already don’t have Virender Sehwag’s services for the Champions Trophy, and didn’t want to risk Gambhir for the big event.”If I had continued playing there, it would have aggravated, and there’s a long season up ahead,” Gambhir said. “I didn’t want to take that risk. The Champions Trophy is much more important.”Gambhir is undergoing rehabilitation under the supervision of the physio-trainer team of Paul Chapman and Paul Close at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, and he could head home to New Delhi sometime next week because he will only require rest. It is believed to be a minor strain. Nonetheless, it will be a tricky decision for India, who risked taking a half-fit Sehwag to England for the World Twenty20 and ended up an opener short. This, though, is a smaller injury in comparison.

Airline protesters interrupt Test

The final day of the first Ashes Test at Cardiff was interrupted by a pitch invasion involving two protesters campaigning against the recruitment policies of a discount airline

The final day of the first Ashes Test at Cardiff was interrupted by a pitch invasion involving two protesters campaigning against the recruitment policies of a discount airline. John Foley and Anthony Lea stormed the field during the 51st over, brandishing a banner decrying the Michael O’Leary-owned Ryanair for supposedly charging would-be recruits for training, only to terminate their contracts thereafter.Foley halted play for several minutes while he was wrestled to the ground by four security guards, while Lea broke the stumps at Cathedral Road End before he too was subdued. Speaking after his ejection from Sophia Gardens, Foley, 43, said the protest had been planned the previous evening after Ryanair terminated the employment contract of his daughter. The protest was slightly less eventful than that which occured during the Headingley Test of 1975, where vandals forced the abandonment of the third Ashes Test by digging up the pitch prior to the fifth day’s play. On that occasion, the protesters were campaigning for the release of George Davis, a 34-year-old mini-cab driver who had been sentenced to a 20-year sentence for armed robbery.

New Zealand bear the Brunt

Suzie Bates is stumped by Sarah Taylor•AFP

Over of the day
When Laura Marsh took the new ball with her slower-than-slow offspin, she set the agenda for the contest with a teasing, strangling performance. Tossing the ball up at a pace that invited a rash response, he got under the skin of New Zealand’s openers, and then into their minds with sharp and biting turn. Suzie Bates, so crucial to their hopes of a defendable total, lost the plot after only five deliveries, galloping down the track to a ball that barely reached her, for Sarah Taylor behind the stumps to whip off the bails with glee.Wicket of the day
With one big gun gone, the other simply couldn’t afford to fail. But New Zealand’s captain, Aimee Watkins, wasn’t given the chance to script a riposte. Katherine Brunt’s extra pace had proven expensive in the semi-final, but this time it was simply deadly. Watkins came into this contest on the back of a crushing 89 not out from 58 balls against India, but before she could get going, Brunt swung a perfect yorker through her loose defences.Bowler of the day
Sporting an impressive shiner that enhanced her menacing credentials, Brunt bludgeoned New Zealand like a blunt instrument of attack that she’s become. Lucy Doolan drilled her through the covers for four from the final ball of her first over, but that was the sum total of the attacking strokes she permitted. From the remaining 18 balls of her spell, Brunt leaked nothing more than a spare of singles, and no runs at all off the bat from back-to-back maidens. Doolan lost the plot and steered a scoop to the wicketkeeper, before Rachel Priest hoicked a short ball and was caught with glee on the crease.Fielder of the day
Sarah Taylor was a jack-in-the-box behind the stumps, and justified her status as the rising star of England’s team with a performance that punished every one of New Zealand’s errors. She did for Bates with a quicksilver stumping from wide of the crease, then refused to be distracted by Doolan’s contortions at the crease, as she watched the ball take the edge of that attempted scoop, and fly high and hard to her right. Sarah Tsukigawa became her third and finest victim when she took off, again to her right, to snaffle a thick edge off Jenny Gunn. And then, for good measure, she wrapped up the run-out that ensured New Zealand would be bowled out from the final ball of their 20 overs.Drop of the day
Misfields were a rarity for either side, as both sets of fielders gave impressive support to their hard-working bowlers. But there was one lapse that, in the final analysis, proved very costly indeed. After her 76 not out from 53 balls in the semi-final run-chase, the one player that New Zealand could not afford to reprieve was Claire Taylor. But that’s exactly what happened, when Taylor was dropped by the keeper, Priest, before she had a run to her name. It was tough luck on the bowler, Kate Pulford, whose late seam movement had beaten Taylor three times in four balls in her previous over. This time she found the edge, but Priest couldn’t cling on as she stretched out her right mitt.Shot of the day
By the halfway point of the run-chase, Taylor’s only boundary was that edge through the wicketkeeper’s grasp, and the target, while never challenging, was starting to look more hazardous than anticipated. But then, out of the blue, Taylor unfurled a riotous on-drive against Pulford that soared down the ground and into the boundary boards for four. It was the first real statement of intent of her innings, and the first sign that New Zealand had little hope of recovery.

Celtic: Rogic omitted from Australia squad

A notable development has emerged on Celtic midfielder Tom Rogic regarding his situation heading into the international break.

What’s the latest?

The midfielder has been left out of Australia’s squad for their upcoming matches. Socceroos head coach Graham Arnold explained the 28-year-old’s absence, putting it down to injury after he sustained a knock in the win over Hibernian last month.

He said: “Tom Rogic, Aaron Mooy and Adam Taggart were unavailable for selection this window due to injury or quarantine, however we have developed good depth in the Socceroos over the past few years and the squad that has been selected is one that we have full belief in to perform strongly for the Australian public.”

Ange will be buzzing

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou will surely be buzzing with this news, as it appears to align with his plan to get Rogic back fit. Whilst a player being left out of their national team due to injury may be a blow in other situations, this time it could be a huge boost for the Hoops.

Last month, the Celtic manager revealed that the midfielder will be out for two to three weeks and outlined his scheduled return. He told the Daily Record: “He had a scan on his hamstring. It’s going to put him out for at least two to three weeks. It’s not a major one but he definitely won’t be involved in these games.

“Then obviously we have the international window, and if everything goes to plan he should be available once we get back from that.”

Rogic going halfway across the globe to play for Australia during the break could have ruined Postecoglou’s plan for multiple reasons. For starters, he would be flying around the world and returning late ahead of Celtic’s return to action, which could set him back in is recovery, while he could also aggravate his injury by playing for his country.

The £16k-per-week gem could have caused further issues by trying to play through the knock for Australia, which could then have forced him to miss more competitive matches for the Hoops. That is why the Celtic boss will be delighted that Rogic has been left out of the squad, as it gives the 28-year-old the time he needs to recover.

In the Premiership this season, the midfielder has averaged an impressive SofaScore rating of 6.97 across 11 appearances despite only starting seven of those matches. He has chipped in with one goal and two assists and his statistics show that he is capable of performing consistently to a high level, which is why his lack of involvement for Australia and the reduced chance of him aggravating his injury is a huge boost for Celtic.

Postecoglou must unleash Johnston

With Ange Postecoglou having endured something of an injury crisis during the early stages of his managerial career at Celtic, the 56-year-old manager will undoubtedly be delighted that a number of his first-team squad are finally returning to full fitness at Parkhead.

Indeed, Mikey Johnston, Josip Juranovic, Georgios Giakoumakis and James McCarthy were all available for selection against St. Johnstone on Saturday after varying lengths of spells spent on the sidelines due to injury, while Christopher Jullien and James Forrest are set to return to first-team training in the coming weeks.

Postecoglou himself recently commented on his excitement regarding the return of Johnston, stating after Saturday’s 2-0 win: “I was really pleased to see Mikey back because he looked really good in pre-season. I know how talented he is but the key for him was to get his body healthy and to be really patient with him.

“He’s a talented player and he’s now getting more game time. The way we play I know he can have a huge impact for us, he just needs to stay healthy and keep improving his game.”

It is easy to see why the 56-year-old appears so happy with the return of the 22-year-old, as, over his brief 8-minute cameo against Ferencvarosi in midweek, the £900k-rated man highly impressed, managing 13 touches of the ball, making one key pass, completing both of his attempted dribbles, creating one big chance and hitting the target with his only shot at goal.

These metrics saw the £9k-per-week forward earn a SofaScore match rating of 7.7, ranking him as the third-best player to feature in the match.

As such, while it is true that Johnston has failed to ever really cement a starting spot in the Celtic side after breaking through into the first team, with his highest number of league appearances in one season being 14 back in 2018/19, Postecoglou simply must unleash the 22-year-old in the coming weeks, as now would finally appear to be the time when the winger can have a real impact within the Bhoys side.
