Ele marcou quatro gols.

Sri Lanka aim to put Test thrashing behind them

It would be easy to bill the hosts as favourites to win the two Twenty20 internationals against Sri Lanka. It would also be presumptuous

The Preview by George Binoy08-Dec-2009Match factsWednesday, December 9

Big pictureIt would be easy, in the immediate aftermath of India’s comprehensive Test series victory, to bill the hosts as favourites to win the two Twenty20 internationals against Sri Lanka. It would also be presumptuous because there are significant changes in personnel and the format is one in which India have struggled since the delirious high of World Twenty20 glory in 2007.The Indian players are stars in their respective IPL teams but their results have been ordinary when playing together as an international side: in nine Twenty20 internationals since 2008, they have lost six and won three. The first victory was a remarkable come-from-behind effort inspired by the Pathan brothers in Sri Lanka, the other two were against Bangladesh and Ireland during a woeful World Twenty20 campaign in England this year. The two significant problems India had in England, however, will be missing from these two games. Virender Sehwag, who had an injured shoulder during the World Twenty20, is back and in frightening form, and the other batsmen’s weaknesses against the rising delivery are unlikely to be exposed on the flat and true pitches in India.Gary Kirsten, the India coach, had said after they were eliminated from the World Twenty20 that there were holes in the Twenty20 set-up and teams had worked out strategies to effectively negate India’s strengths. The next World Twenty20 is in May 2010 and the opportunities to formulate, fine-tune and effect plans are limited.Sri Lanka, on the other hand, had a terrific World Twenty20 and were unbeaten until the final, which they lost to Pakistan. They were the tournament’s most vibrant team: the evergreen Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan’s daring improvisations gave them fast starts, while the combination of Murali, Mendis and Malinga was simply too much for most opponents to handle. Since then, however, Sri Lanka have lost three matches on the trot – one to Pakistan and two to New Zealand, that too at home.Their Test bowlers were battered by the Indian batsmen and Sri Lanka will welcome the addition of Lasith Malinga’s pace and yorker-bowling skills to their attack. Jayasuriya will join Dilshan to form a destructive, match-winning opening combination. The question, though, is whether Ajantha Mendis will be able to exercise any control over a batting line-up that treated him with disdain over the last month.Form guide (most recent first)India – LLLWW
Sri Lanka – LLLLW
Watch out forLasith Malinga: When he’s bowling well, Malinga can unleash yorkers at will and his low point of release makes it extremely hard for batsmen to get under his deliveries. In the World Twenty20, he developed a slower full-toss and, while the delivery sounds rather harmless, it foxed several batsmen and left stumps flattened.India’s middle-order: The middle-order was shuffled frequently during the World Twenty20 and their performances were disappointing. Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma and Yusuf Pathan struggled against the short ball.Team newsIndia have rested Zaheer Khan and Harbhajan Singh from the Twenty20 internationals which means the bowling line-up is likely to be Ashish Nehra, Sreesanth, Ishant Sharma and Pragyan Ojha. There’s is a doubt over Sreesanth, though, because the bowler has an upset stomach. If he is unfit one of the rookies – Sudeep Tyagi, R Ashwin and Ashok Dinda – could get a look in.India (possible): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 MS Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Sreesanth, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Ashish Nehra.Murali injured ligaments in a couple of fingers while training during the third Test and is likely to be rested from the Twenty20 matches.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Kaushalya Weeraratne, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Ajantha Mendis, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Chanaka Welegedara.Pitch and conditionsThere’s no rain forecast in Nagpur but the difference between day and night temperatures are significant which means dew could be a factor in the evening. The pitch is the same as the one on which India scored 354 in an ODI against Australia in October so expect more runs.”It’s a late evening start. We may see dew come into effect,” MS Dhoni said. “But by the time dew comes in the game may be over. It won’t be that big a factor. Overall it [pitch] will be good for batting, but in Twenty20 its very tough to predict. All of a sudden you look to go aggressive and lose quite a few wickets at quick intervals and you are not able to get big runs.”Stats and Trivia Both teams will be coming into this game on losing streaks – Sri Lanka have lost their last four (before which they had won six in a row) while India have lost their last three. Overall, Sri Lanka have a slightly better win-loss record, 14-9 in 23 games, compared to India’s 9-7 in 18 matches. India have played only once at home and once against Sri Lanka, and have won both games – they beat Australia by seven wickets at the Brabourne Stadium in 2007, and Sri Lanka by three wickets in Colombo earlier this year. Sri Lanka have preferred batting first in Twenty20 games, winning nine and losing five. When batting second, they’ve won five and lost four. For India the numbers are almost the same – 5-4 when batting first, and 4-3 when chasing. Tillakaratne Dilshan is the leading run-scorer in Twenty20 internationals among batsmen from these two teams, with Sanath Jayasuriya in second place. Quotes”We have to try and put the Test series behind us. We have a lot of hard work to do all around to keep improving and we have a good opportunity in these two Twenty20 games. The motivation is always there, but we need to start from scratch.”
“Considering we are playing in India, it would be a bit different for the bowlers, as the batsmen would go after them from the very first ball. It looks to be a small game, just four overs, but the amount of effort that’s needed, that’s what it is all about.”

Conte wants Ndombele out

As per Football Insider, an update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele’s future at the club and what manager Antonio Conte intends in January.

The Lowdown: Future up in the air…

The club record signing, brought in from Lyon two years ago (BBC), has been at the centre of reports linking him with a move away since the summer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ndombele allegedly informed Tottenham chiefs of his desire to leave north London before August, but after a move failed to materialise, the 24-year-old has been in and out the team.

Conte’s arrival gifted the Frenchman yet another new start after the sackings of Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo but Spurs’ latest manager has already called out his work ethic.

Now, in an update on his future, FI have shared some news on Conte’s sale stance.

The Latest: Conte wants him gone…

As per their information, the Italian ‘wants Ndombele out if a deal can be done’ with Spurs now aware of interest from Italian giants Juventus, the former club of transfer chief Fabio Paratici.

Football Insider also reiterate that Conte has already told Spurs chiefs to offload the midfielder in January, and while a permanent sale isn’t ruled out, an obligation-to-buy loan or standard temporary deal are more realistic options.

The Verdict: Time to go?

We believe cutting ties with Ndombele could be the only way forward at this point, even despite his obvious ability, with the former Ligue 1 sensation finishing 2020/2021 as Tottenham’s best dribbler on average with 2.2 completed take-ons per 90 in the Premier League (WhoScored).

He’s also been described as ‘unplayable’ by former Spurs keeper Joe Hart during his time in north London (Rio Ferdinand to BT via Spurs Web), but Ndombele’s quality is marred by a consistent lack of application.

Chairman Daniel Levy famously sat down with the £200,000-per-week ace to discuss his future during Amazon’s fly-on-the-wall documentary ‘All or Nothing’, and that was in his first season at Hotspur Way.

Having played under three new managers since Pochettino first brought him to Spurs, now may be time to consider parting ways.

Jayasuriya's future under scrutiny

Sanath Jayasuriya has been told by Sri Lanka’s selectors that his performances on the tour of India will be close evaluated with an eye on the 2011 World Cup

Sa'adi Thawfeeq29-Oct-2009

Sanath Jayasuriya’s recent batting form has the Sri Lankan selectors concerned•AFP

Sanath Jayasuriya’s cricketing future has been put in the balance with Sri Lanka’s selectors saying today that his days as an opener are effectively over and that following the upcoming tour of India he will be picked on performance alone. Jayasuriya, 40, has been picked in the one-day squad as an allrounder who can bat down the order and bowl left-arm spin.”What we expect from Sanath is that he should win one in three games for Sri Lanka, which he was doing in the past,” Ashantha de Mel, Sri Lanka’s chairman of selectors, said in Colombo. “But now that has reduced and we are a little concerned about it. In the Champions Trophy in South Africa his performance was below par .That’s the reason why we have gone in with the option of playing him as an allrounder.”Jayasuriya scored freely during the World Twenty20 in England this summer, where Sri Lanka finished runners-up, and ended as their joint second-highest run-getter with 177 at 25.28. However, he underperformed in the limited-overs fixtures against New Zealand and India at home and in the Champions Trophy.Sri Lanka’s selectors have Upul Tharanga and Tillakaratne Dilshan in mind as the opening pair for the future and Jayasuriya’s selection will depend on the requirements of the team depending on where they will play. “We have spoken to Sanath on the role he has to play,” de Mel said. “He has the option to play as an allrounder. We have considered him for this tour only, after that his selection will depend on his performance. He has to perform to hold his place in the team for the World Cup.”de Mel said the selectors did not have a settled position for Jayasuriya, who was impressive as an allrounder during Sri Lanka’s victorious World Cup campaign in 1996, and that his flexibility worked in his favour. “Especially in the batting power play having a spinning allrounder like Sanath is useful in the subcontinent because he can hit the ball. He might bat in the middle or in the top order depending on the situation,” he said. “Also, the World Cup will be held in the subcontinent where his left-arm spin can become useful. He can perform that role because in South Africa in the game against New Zealand when they scored 300 runs he was the one who bowled ten overs for three wickets and 30 runs. He has done well in the subcontinent especially with his bowling.”Jayasuriya is the second batsman after India’s Sachin Tendulkar to pass 13,000 runs in ODIs and also holds the record for being the oldest batsman to score a one-day century, at 39 years and 212 days against India in Colombo. Of the 13,377 runs he has scored in 441 ODIs, 2841 have come in 86 ODIs against India including seven hundreds at a strike-rate of 97.Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara felt the main factor in Sri Lanka’s poor ODI performances over the past two years has been an inconsistent batting line up. “The biggest let-down we had is our batting. We suffered because we had lots of batting position changes up and down the order,” he said. “For the batting to improve you must give the players the confidence. They must know what role they are supposed to play. Role identification has been a big problem. Except for the openers no one knew what their role was in the side.”We have never clicked in all departments those are things the team ignored for a while. The players have now started to realise that they take a lot of pride not just representing the country but to be up to the task that is required of them by the team.”Fielding was one of the key areas where Sri Lanka suffered during the Champions Trophy and to address the poor standards and improve them Sri Lanka Cricket acquired the services of Gavin Fingleson, a former Olympic baseball player.”He didn’t come and change but showed us how do things right. He showed us little points that will make us better and quick fielders, at the same time we also realized to be quicker on the field you’ve got to be fitter as a side,” Sangakkara said. “We started doing a lot of work on fitness running. Gavin showed us a lot of drills and how you can gain that extra second advantage when going for a catch or trying to stop the ball. At the same time the most important point was to make sure at practice you do everything as perfectly, those are the habits we have to build on.”

Wave of support made me stay as captain – Younis

The Pakistan captain said the wave of support back home that followed after he offered to step down, persuaded him to stay in charge of the team

Pakistan captain Younis Khan has said though it had been a difficult time facing up to match-fixing allegations, the wave of support back home that followed after he offered to step down, persuaded him to stay in charge of the team.”It started with the committee that called me,” Younis said. “As for me, it was very hard to go there and answer their questions. If I’m being questioned on my performance or my team’s performance then that’s very easy, as that happens in every country, not just Pakistan. But it was hard to go there and face them [and answer questions on match-fixing] and it was in my mind that if there were any hard questions then I’d quit.”I’m used to controversy, but this time the whole nation was behind me. I thought I might not be able to play for a couple of months but every single person in Pakistan was backing me, so that’s why I’m here.”There were believed to be various reasons behind Younis’s resignation, though he never openly stated them. It is believed that as well as the suspicions of match-fixing raised in the aftermath of Pakistan’s Champions Trophy semi-final loss to New Zealand, murmurs about factions in the team and management working to undermine Younis spurred the move. However, Younis said he was keen to stop, what according to him, was a flawed search for answers everytime the side failed to win. “It’s not possible all the time to win competitions,” he said. “I wanted to stop these things and that’s why I gave my resignation.”My mind is now free and I can just worry about my captaincy, worry about my own form and worry about my team. I have no problems with my team, no problems with my country and no problems with my countrymen and I hope you’ll see that in the coming days.”Pakistan will be engaging New Zealand in a limited-overs series – three ODIs and two Twenty20 internationals – in the UAE, from November 3-13. While the ODIs have been scheduled for Abu Dhabi, Dubai will host the two Twenty20s.Younis, however, downplayed the notion that the upcoming clash was a chance to avenge the defeat in the Champions Trophy. “It’s not [a revenge series] but all the Pakistan players have it in their minds, if possible, to beat New Zealand,” Younis said. “In cricket and sport there is no revenge, but we won’t forget that loss.”

Newcastle transfer news on Nicolo Zaniolo

Newcastle United reportedly now have ‘the opportunity’ to sign AS Roma star Nicolo Zaniolo.

The Lowdown: Newcastle’s new Gascoigne?

Back in 2019, the player’s agent Claudio Vigorelli claimed that his client ‘resembles’ former Magpies midfielder Paul Gascoigne for his ‘physical qualities’ and can be ‘devastating’ like Gazza with his ‘technique and quality’ (The Daily Mail).

The former England international was a cult hero at St James’ Park, being their Player of the Year in the 1987/88 season, and scored 20 goals in 94 games in total for them across all competitions (Transfermarkt).

Zaniolo is still only 22 years of age, and given the comparisons to Gazza, he seems to have a big future ahead of him.

The Latest: Opportunity comes around

As per Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Newcastle now have ‘the opportunity’ to sign Zaniolo for ‘significant amounts’ of money, with Tottenham Hotspur also an option for the Italy international.

However, they will not be able to sign him in the January transfer window, but a deal may be possible next summer.

The Verdict: Makes sense

With the Magpies currently in a relegation battle, it would make a lot of sense for them to wait until the summer before they can assess whether they can sign Zaniolo.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-2/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Currently rated at £36m by 16 goals and provided a further nine assists in 87 matches for Roma, showing that he has an eye for a goal and an assist.

At 22, he has so much potential, and if Newcastle can avoid relegation, he would certainly be an astute signing to target.

Celtic are closing in on Reo Hatate

Celtic are reportedly closing in on the signing of Kawasaki Frontale defender Reo Hatate as the January transfer window approaches.

What’s the story?

According to the Daily Mail (as relayed by the Daily Record), the Hoops are expected to bring the 24-year-old to Glasgow on a free transfer at the beginning of 2022.

Hatate’s contract is set to expire in January and he was left in tears as he said farewell to Frontale fans after their most recent title success, indicating that an imminent exit is on the cards.

Talks between Celtic and the attack-minded left-back are said to be “well down the road” as Hoops manager Ange Postecoglou continues his rebuild at Parkhead.

He would be a dream transfer for Ange

Securing Hatate’s signature could be a dream transfer for Postecoglou after the 56-year-old admitted that further reinforcements are needed following Thursday’s 3-2 defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen.

He said: “There is no doubt. We are still just four or five months into building a team and it was never going to happen in one transfer window.

“We know that we need more depth and players in certain areas that I think can help us to bridge the gap. You look at the Leverkusen side and they have quality all the way through.

“What we want to do is be able to compete at that level and we need to continue to look to improve our squad and add depth so that we can compete in lots of competitions.”

When taking into account just how impressive Hatate has been for Kawasaki Frontale in recent months, the former Japan under-21 international appears to be an ideal fit for Celtic’s ongoing revolution.

In his 29 J-League appearances throughout 2021, the £720k-rated gem bagged five goals and laid on a further two assists for his teammates, creating three big chances and providing 1.1 key passes per game along the way.

The player who Opta analyst Sacha Pisani claimed “has a rocket of a left foot” also impressed in the defensive aspect of his game, averaging 1.4 interceptions and 1.3 tackles per league match, while winning 5.3 duels per fixture.

Therefore, he could be an ideal acquisition over the winter as Celtic seek to reclaim their Premiership crown and end Rangers’ reign as Scottish champions.
