Sourav Ganguly hit a composed half-century and Manoj Tiwary exploded after a slow start to boost Kolkata Knight Riders to 183, a total beyond the reach of a listless Kings XI Punjab. It was a mediocre game, especially from Punjab, who were so painfully slow that they fell out of the reckoning very early in the chase.It made for strange viewing that no one took ownership of the chase as the game kept slipping away from Punjab. Yuvraj Singh and Manvinder Bisla hit a few boundaries early on in the piece but both fell to Ajit Agarkar – Manoj Tiwary held on to a splendid running catch at deep midwicket to remove Yuvraj – and the chase started to derail. What baffled was the approach of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, who allowed the pressure to mount. They didn’t go for any big shots and left themselves with too much to do in the end. With the run-rate mounting at an exponential rate, both fell while going for high-risk shots: Jayawardene moved outside off stump and couldn’t connect with the paddle shot, and Sangakkara was stumped as he lost balance while going for a reverse slog. Game over.The victory, though, was set up by Kolkata’s batting, led by Ganguly and Tiwary. It was an interesting innings: just when the visitors were letting things slip, they would attack. Their batting graph resembled a sine curve: Kolkata attacked at the top before they suddenly lost steam and meandered for a while, but they picked up the momentum after the first time-out. They slowed down once again towards the end but Tiwary looted 21 runs in the final over, bowled by Irfan Pathan, to regain lost ground.The start too was frenetic with Brett Lee’s first over on comeback going for 19 runs. Chris Gayle hit some smashing drives but, to be fair to the bowler, there was an edged boundary and a yorker that went for four byes as well. And when Ganguly went after Pathan in the second over, lifting him over cover and smashing him to the straight boundary, Kolkata had reached a healthy 27 for 0, but suddenly, against the run of play, they started to slow down.Shalabh Srivastava struck for Punjab, removing Gayle with more than little help from Bisla, who charged to his left on the deep square-leg boundary and lunged as the ball swerved away from him to take a stunning two-handed catch. Ganguly collected a couple of boundaries but, with Tiwary struggling at the start, the run-rate started to dip. There were 27 dot balls in the first ten overs, nearly five full overs of stagnation, but the time-out allowed Kolkata to regroup and come out firing.All of a sudden, Tiwary started finding his touch and two shots in particular showcased his skill. The first was against a near yorker-length delivery well outside off, he reached out to crash it to cover boundary. The second was even better. Ravi Bopara’s yorker was heading towards off and middle, when Tiwary crouched to play a delicate late-cut to the third-man boundary. In between, he swung over midwicket, and backed away from the stumps to drive through off. Ganguly lashed out at Piyush Chawla, lofting and flaying him for boundaries and runs started to come in a flood.However, Kolkata lost momentum again after the fall of Ganguly – hitting Pathan to long-off. From 124 for 2 in 14 overs, they slowed down to 162 for 4 in 19. Tiwary then took Pathan apart in the final over, smashing four boundaries – a pulled six after which he backed away to find the wide long-off boundary repeatedly. The brutal finish seemed to have sucked out the spirit from Punjab, who dawdled in the chase.

Graham Napier, the Essex allrounder, is determined to use the IPL as a chance to prove the England selectors were wrong for overlooking him for the preliminary 30-man World Twenty20 squad.Napier couldn’t find a place in the expanded group despite having been part of the squad for the previous tournament in England. He didn’t earn a start during that event and still hasn’t had a chance to show he can replicate his county form at the top level.Napier is the highest English Twenty20 wicket-taker with 88 scalps in 63 matches and helped Central Districts qualify for the Champions League Twenty20 when he was their overseas player this season. In 2008 he hit an astonishing 152 against Sussex in the Twenty20 Cup which included a world record 16 sixes.”I’m deeply disappointed not to be involved in the 30-man squad, having played well in Twenty20 cricket over the winter,” Napier told his website, grahamnapier.com, after arriving in India to link with Mumbai Indians. “I am currently the leading wicket-taker in Twenty20 cricket and have the ability to take the attack to the opposition with the bat if required. I feel Twenty20 is a form of the game that suits me well and the more experience I’ve gained in it the more effective I have become.”There is an opportunity for me over the next few weeks – as one of only eight English players involved in the IPL – to show the England selectors what they are missing out on,” he added. “But my job now is to focus on being as good a player I can be for Mumbai Indians, Essex and Central Districts. According to reports by UOL Deportes in Brazil (as relayed by Sport Witness), Ajax have rejected a £12.5m bid for reported Everton transfer target David Neres as they seek a valuation of £16.7m.

Despite this, it is ‘expected’ that the 24-year-old will be sold during the January transfer window.

The Lowdown: Neres in poor form

The winger has seen his productivity decline in recent times. During the 2017/18 league campaign, the Brazilian produced an emphatic 14 goals and 14 assists in 32 appearances for the Amsterdam club.

However, this electric form seems to have dried up for Neres since then, who has scored three goals and set up another two in 15 Eredivisie games this season, although three of those goal contributions came in Ajax’s 9-0 win over Cambuur.

This poor recent form has led to the 24-year-old being dropped from the starting line-up, and he was an unused substitute in two of the last three league games. Shockingly, Neres is ranked 18th in the Ajax squad for shots averaged per game (0.6), an extremely poor indictment for an attacking player.

The Latest: Everton interested in Neres

Previous reports have linked Everton with the Brazil international, with claims that the club are ‘interested’ in the player arising as former director of football Marcel Brands was a keen admirer of the Dutch league.

According to reports by UOL Deportes in Brazil (as relayed by Sport Witness), Ajax have rejected a €15m (£12.5m) bid from Shakhtar for Neres. The Dutch champions are said to value the attacker at a minimum of €20m (£16.7m), and it is ‘now expected’ that Neres will be sold this month, with the player being ‘kept on Ajax’s negotiable list’ for now.

Everton will need to move swiftly if they are to bring the winger to Goodison Park, as Shakhtar are set to go back in with another bid to try and get their man.

The Verdict: Transfer could be hit or miss

Neres has made an impression across Europe, with the prolific winger netting 47 goals in 180 appearances for Ajax. Indeed, Jose Mourinho previously awarded him the highest of compliments, saying: “As far as I am concerned, David Neres fully reflects what a Brazilian footballer stands for. For me he is the best of this new generation.”

With Everton keen on bringing in a new right winger to the club, the 24-year-old’s relatively cheap price-tag could prove to be a gamble worth taking, if they are to get the player that Ajax originally signed.

However, if he produces the kind of form we’ve seen this season, it could be a move to earn unwanted comparison with that of Davy Klaassen, who flopped on Merseyside after moving from the Amsterdam giants for £23.6m in 2017. It’s hard to predict which way a potential Everton move for Neres would go.

Each one of them has been lost and the latestdefeat in Hobart, to seal yet another whitewash – Australia have four 3-0series wins on the trot now against Pakistan – is demoralising enough forthe inevitable movement to begin in Pakistan demanding his removal.Though Yousuf has been an amiable, well-liked leader of his men off thefield on this tour, his on-field captaincy has led to much criticism,particularly in its essential defensiveness; his timid tactics on thefourth morning at the SCG was the worst embodiment of it, allowingAustralia to sneak in and win a seemingly lost Test.Yousuf’s batting returns as captain have been poor; he averages under 34,with a solitary hundred in nine Tests. In this series, where much hasdepended on him, he hasn’t scored big, averaging less than 30 and makingjust one fifty in six innings. He conceded that leadership may haveaffected his output, but insisted that he would like to continue ascaptain.”Maybe [it has affected my batting]. I have good form but I don’t know, Iam just not making runs,” he said. “I’ve been in better form on this tour than in my last two tours but just not making enough runs. Mudassar Nazar, the former Pakistan batsman, has said Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik deserved to be “kicked out of the team” in the wake of their comments to the media following their forgettable tour of Australia. Nazar said the two senior players – who already have a fractious history – should never have gone public about the turbulent dressing-room atmosphere and suggest that that their own relationship had turned sour again.Yousuf, who took over as captain for the tours of New Zealand and Australia, told a television channel that one player was responsible for disrupting the team unity on tour but stopped short of naming the player, preferring to reveal it to the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. Malik, the former captain, widely regarded as the target of Yousuf’s remarks, hit back by questioning Yousuf’s leadership abilities. This occurred after the team was whitewashed in all matches against Australia.”The Yousuf and Malik feud has been simmering for a while” Nazar told in Dubai. “Yousuf was very active in the press and he has had a go at Malik and other players too quite a few times in the past. The slanging match that has now taken place before us all has, in my opinion, been started by Yousuf and now Malik has responded too.”Both of the players are under central contracts and should not have been allowed to behave in such a way in front of the whole world. Yousuf should not have been allowed to go on television and give such an interview and Malik should not have gone to the press like this in response to Yousuf’s comments”.Nazar said their behaviour will be a bad influence on the younger players and wanted them to be punished. “What sort of an example are Yousuf and Malik giving to the younger players with this sort of behaviour? Both Malik and Yousuf should be taken to task by the board, they should be made an example of and kicked out of the team”.The PCB, which has set up a six-member committee to look into the reasons behind the team’s failure in the two tours, had questioned both Yousuf and Malik on Saturday, besides coach Intikhab Alam, assistant coach Aaqib Javed and opener Salman Butt. It had began work on Friday by interviewing Shahid Afridi and the team manager Abdur Raqueeb.However, Nazar disapproved of the idea of setting up such committees. “The committee will achieve absolutely nothing. We have seen these committees set up before and there is a lot of talk, but nothing materialises from these”.Nazar also took a shot at Ijaz Butt, saying the PCB also didn’t handle the situation well. “What is really mystifying is that Ijaz Butt has given Shoaib Malik the nod of approval to respond in the press to Yousuf’s comments. Butt should not have done this and this has made the situation even worse”.Nazar, who played 76 Tests and 122 ODIs, has coached in Pakistan’s National Cricket Academy and is now with the ICC’s Global Cricket Academy in Dubai. He said he wasn’t interested in coaching Pakistan, if offered the chance.”The job is not for me, thank you very much. I would never do the job in future. O retorno de Kaká ao São Paulo no ano que vem tem o apoio do técnico Dorival Júnior, que enxerga no experiente atleta virtudes importantes para se ter no elenco. A chance de contratação do ídolo, no entanto, levanta uma questão que deixa o comandante preocupado. Na hora de montar o elenco, ele quer evitar excesso de jogadores com tais características, com o risco de deixar o time “pesado”.

Kaká está com 35 anos e, na visão da comissão técnica, agregaria muito com a experiência, a liderança, o exemplo e também tecnicamente, por tratar-se de um jogador diferenciado. Mas há o consenso de que, caso seja contratado, ele não poderá atuar em todos os jogos e precisa ter ao lado jogadores de velocidade, sob o risco de se formar um time mais lento, algo que não bate com o modo como o treinador enxerga futebol.

Atualmente, a espinha dorsal do meio de campo do São Paulo é formada por jogadores cujo forte não está na velocidade. Jucilei, Petros e Hernanes são mais técnicos, de toque de bola, mas menos agudos. Em determinado momento, isso já foi visto como um problema, tanto que Dorival chegou a sacar Jucilei do time, retomando nas três últimas rodadas. O treinador prefere um meio de campo mais dosado, com jogadores que surpreendam com a chegada em velocidade. Além deles, o elenco conta com Militão, que tem sido lateral-direito mas joga de volante, Araruna, Jonatan Gomez, Shaylon, Lucas Fernandes, Thomaz e Cueva para o meio de campo. Nenhum deles tem como forte a chegada de trás em velocidade.

Além disso, é provável que o São Paulo tenha de ir ao mercado em busca de atletas para o lado de campo, de velocidade. Isso porque Marcinho, Morato, Wellington Nem e Denilson, atletas com essas características, têm permanência incerta. A tendência é que saiam.

Tudo isso vai pesar na hora de planejar o time para o ano que vem, para evitar repetir erros de formação, recorrentes no passado. Kaká é muito bem-vindo, mas será necessário atenção para que o ídolo encontre um time qualificado se concretizar seu retorno ao Morumbi.
