Sunil Narine, the West Indies spinner, believes the victory over Australia in St Vincent on Sunday will be a major boost to the side’s confidence. The win ended a five-year drought for West Indies, who had last beaten Australia in a one-day international at the 2006 Champions Trophy, and it levelled the five-match series 1-1 ahead of Tuesday’s third match at Arnos Vale.Narine was Man of the Match for his 4 for 27 and the Australians struggled to find their rhythm against him on a slow surface. He also bowled well in the first game, when he collected 1 for 24 from ten overs, and he hoped his efforts had helped the West Indies players discover the belief that they could beat Australia, having not won a one-day series against the Australians since 1995.”It feels really great to get my best figures in just my fifth match and bowl the team to a victory,” Narine said. “We needed this win after going 1-0 down in the first match on Friday. This will be a huge boost for the players in the team and everyone in the dressing room. This is the first West Indies win over Australia in a long time and it shows that we have it in us to win.”It was not an easy wicket to score on. The batsmen found it a bit difficult to get away the ball and I knew once I kept to the game plan I could create problems. I bowled to a plan and I was well backed up by the other bowlers and the guys in the field. This was a wonderful team effort and is something to build on.”The Australians had 40 overs to bat after rain forced a reduction, but they could only build a total of 154 for 9, which never looked like being enough despite the challenging nature of the pitch. The captain Shane Watson said a lack of runs from the specialist batsmen – George Bailey’s 48 from the first game is the highest score so far – was something Australia needed to address.”The conditions make it a little bit more difficult. You’re definitely never in,” Watson said. “Narine is bowling very well and the ball is turning and bouncing each way. He makes it difficult to be able to keep going. But there’s no doubt one or two of us need to be able to go on and get a bigger score to really set the platform to be able to make sure we can go towards the end. That’s something we’ll talk about.”The third match will be played at the same venue before the teams move on to St Lucia for the final two ODIs, and Australia’s selectors must decide whether changing the balance of their side will help on Tuesday. The fast bowlers James Pattinson and Ben Hilfenhaus are in the squad, along with the offspinner Nathan Lyon, but Watson said shortening the batting order to squeeze in another bowler would be risky.”From the bowling side of things it’s going to be difficult [to change] because the bowling part of our team is doing a really good job,” he said. “[They did] a really good job trying to defend 150 on that wicket. The balance of our bowling attack is really good.”On this wicket we probably need a little bit of depth in our batting order as well, because you’re never really in. It’s going to be difficult to change the bowling side of things, even though we’ve got a few big guns ready to go in Ben Hilfenhaus and James Pattinson.”Watson also said Australia would be prepared if the former West Indies captain Chris Gayle returned at some point during the series, having not played international cricket since last March.”We’ve got to be,” Watson said. “I’ve played a lot of cricket against Chris and you always want to play against the best players. It’ll be a big challenge for him out there as well. In the end if he comes back in there’s no doubt he’ll certainly strengthen up the West Indian team. He’s a serious player.”The series continues on Tuesday in St Vincent, where the prime minister has declared the day a public holiday after Sunday’s win, which should ensure a big crowd for the match.

Clarke wants consistency with DRS

Michael Clarke has called for consistency on the ICC’s Decision Review System (DRS) after the BCCI refused to allow its use in the upcoming Test series in Australia

Michael Clarke has called for consistency on the ICC’s Decision Review System (DRS) after the BCCI refused to allow its use in the upcoming Test series in Australia. Earlier this year, the ICC made the use of the DRS mandatory in Tests and ODIs, but three months later reversed its decision and went back to the rule that the boards of both countries must agree for it to be used in a series. The Indian board’s strong opposition to the DRS meant the four-Test series, which begins in Melbourne on Boxing Day, was never likely to feature umpire reviews. It will be Australia’s first Test series played without referrals since Ricky Ponting’s men toured India last October, and Clarke said while he was neutral on the system, consistency was required.”I’m not bothered either way,” Clarke said. “I’d just like to see a broader decision made for every team. I would like to see it either in Test cricket and one-day cricket or in one or the other, or not used at all. I find it a little bit inconsistent if we’re having it in one series and not having it in the other. I don’t mind what the decision is; I’d just like to see it consistent the whole time.”As a result of the BCCI’s stance, all decisions in this series will remain in the hands of the on-field umpires, Marais Erasmus and Ian Gould for the first two Tests, and Aleem Dar and Kumar Dharmasena for the final two matches. However, Channel Nine’s coverage will still feature technology such as Eagle Eye and Hot Spot for the viewers at home. That has the potential to create further drama; obvious umpiring errors will be visible to TV viewers, players in the change rooms and media at the ground, but not to the players and officials on field. Channel Nine’s executive producer of sport, Brad McNamara, said he could not understand the BCCI’s objections to the DRS.”We put a lot of time, effort and money into making it as accurate as possible,” McNamara told the . “We are fairly certain we are using the best technology available. If India get a couple of rough ones through the summer, they might all of a sudden become a fan of the DRS. It is a bit confusing.”However, Clarke said it would not be too difficult to adjust back to playing under the old conditions. He said his players would be happy to take the umpire’s decision, despite having become accustomed to being allowed to ask for a review over the past couple of years.”We’ve only had DRS for a few years so it’s no different to how it’s been throughout my whole career,” Clarke said. “At the end of the day, the umpires will do their best to make the right decision. Like us players, I’d love to make a hundred every time I walk out on to the field but it doesn’t happen, we make mistakes, we make errors.”The positive thing is it’s going to be consistent for both teams throughout the series. I think that’s a real positive thing. Both teams will live with whatever decisions are made throughout the series.”

Swann won't quit one-day internationals

Graeme Swann has no plans to quit one-day internationals despite his recent comments that the format should be ditched

Graeme Swann has no plans to quit one-day internationals, despite his recent comments that the format should be ditched, but believes the seven-match series England are due to play in India next year is “ridiculous”.Swann came out with strong comments earlier this week saying that international cricket should involve Tests and Twenty20 but didn’t expect much support for his view. However, as a cricketer who is active in all three formats he insists something has to give and in 2012 is due to spend 250 days in hotel beds.”I do think we play way too much of it and the idea of a seven-match series in India next winter is ridiculous,” he told the . “But I won’t hang up my one-day boots because I missed so much cricket for England over the eight years before I got back in that I don’t think I’d forgive myself if I started to pick and choose what I played.”That would turn me into the player I don’t want to be and the sort of bloke I don’t want to be, because I love playing for England so much. I realise I’m incredibly lucky to do what I do and I just have to get on with it. I might not be happy about playing in a seven-match one-day series, but we’ve got to give the best account of ourselves.”Swann admitted there have been times he has not been completely motivated for an international match due to the continuous flow of fixtures. “It annoys me that your mind can be in a place where you’ve got an international game and you’re not itching to play in it,” he said.Swann is currently on a rare lengthy break from the game since being involved on the one-day tour of India during October. He will return to action to face Pakistan in the UAE next month, which is the start of another hectic period of international cricket for England. The UAE trip is followed by two Tests in Sri Lanka starting at the end of March and the home season starts in mid-May. Following the visit of South Africa there is the World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka then England tour India for a trip that involves four Tests before the end of the year.

DRS in place for ODIs and Tests

South Africa’s home ODI and Test series against Australia will have the full benefits of the DRS after the host broadcasters unveiled their provisions for its use during the matches

South Africa’s home ODI and Test series against Australia will have the full benefits of the DRS after the host broadcasters unveiled their provisions for its use during the matches.Following the ICC executive board’s decision to revert to a system of competing teams deciding for themselves whether or not to use the system, South Africa and Australia agreed to implement the aids for decision-making that were also in place the last time these two sides met, in South Africa in 2009.The officiating umpires will be able to call on technological aids including super and ultra slow motion cameras, ball-tracking via Hawkeye and evidence of edges via HotSpot cameras. There will be no restriction on the types of dismissals that may be referred by the competing teams, meaning lbw decisions can be referred.Australia will employ a similar incarnation of the DRS in its two-match home series against New Zealand in December, but it is unlikely they will be able to employ the system against India in the four Tests that follow, given the BCCI’s scepticism about the system.
