Independentemente do lugar’, disse Geuvânio.

A captain’s innings from Will Bosisto steered Australia into the semi-finals after they were in serious danger of being knocked out by Bangladesh in Townsville. Australia, the hosts and defending champions, knocked over Bangladesh for 171 but faced major trouble early in the chase as they slumped to 11 for 3 in the sixth over, when Bosisto came to the crease. The opener Cameron Bancroft was caught behind off Taskin Ahmed for one and Abu Jayed picked up Meyrick Buchanan and Kurtis Patterson for ducks, but it was the fourth wicket that caused some consternation at the ground, when the bowler Soumya Sarkar mankaded Jimmy Peirson for 21. However, following that, Bosisto and Travis Head rebuilt the innings for Australia with a 67-run partnership.Head fell for 44, the second wicket for Taskin, and Ashton Turner joined Bosisto with 72 runs required to keep Australia alive in the tournament. They eased Australia home with no further loss and with four overs remaining, and Bosisto was left unbeaten on 71 and Turner on 27 when the winning runs arrived. The victory was a relief for the Australians after Bangladesh made a promising start with the bat, having been sent in by Bosisto. Sarkar and Liton Das put on 64 for the opening wicket, but a middle-order collapse hurt Bangladesh. Sarkar struck 73 from 80 balls and was one of three wickets taken by the part-timer Head, and besides the openers the only other men to reach double figures were Naeem Islam jnr (12) and Noor Hossain (17).

Pat Cummins is expected to join last year’s Big Bash League runners-up the Perth Scorchers, who have re-signed the veterans Simon Katich, Michael Hussey and Marcus North. Cummins was part of the Sydney Sixers squad last summer but did not play a game due to his long-term foot injury, and his participation this season will again depend on his fitness and his international duties.Stuart Clark, the general manager of the Sydney Sixers, said on Fox Sports that Cummins would not be part of the Sixers squad this season, and he is believed to be joining the Scorchers. Clark also said that Cummins, whose injury problems continued this month when he was sent home from the ODI tour of England due to a side strain, needed to be handled carefully.”We all have to be on one wavelength with Pat Cummins, because he’s a fine prospect,” Clark said on Fox Sports. “No one is ever questioning that. But the last thing he needs is you telling him to do more weights and [someone else] telling him to do more running. The poor kid is just confused. He needs one solid training programme, probably set by Cricket Australia, and then run with it.”The Scorchers have not confirmed signing Cummins, but they have retained three important batsmen on their roster for next season. North will again captain the side and will be joined by Katich, who has retired from all other cricket in Australia, while Hussey’s appearances for the side will again be dictated by his Australia commitments.”It is great to have the skipper back on board,” Lachlan Stevens, the Scorchers coach, said. “Marcus is one of the most tactically astute players in the game today, and to have him involved in the planning and strategic direction of the team was very important to us.”I’m delighted that the only time we will see Simon Katich at top level cricket this summer it will be under the Perth Scorchers banner. The strength of character and tactical awareness that he provides helped to make us such a competitive side last year. He adds massive value on and off the field and we can’t wait to see him back.”Mike Hussey represents everything that is positive about Western Australian cricket, so to have him as part of the Scorchers line-up was a big priority for us, and we are very pleased that he chose to remain in the orange this season. We may not see Mike day in, day out, but merely having him as part of our squad is a huge benefit to every member of the team.”Daniel Vettori, who will play with the Brisbane Heat, remained the only international signing in the opening stages of the contract window, but Clark confirmed the Sixers were interested in attracting Sunil Narine, the West Indies spinner. Narine was the player of the tournament in this year’s IPL and, depending on West Indies’ schedule in December and January, will be keenly sought after by the BBL sides.”We’re looking at Sunil Narine,” Clark said. “There’s just some conflicting schedule issues with the West Indies Cricket Board. Hopefully we’ll be able to get him across for at least part of the season. If we can then he’ll be a fine prospect for us moving forward. We’ve still got some contract stuff to go, but he’s one player we’re looking at.”In other signings on Wednesday, Nathan Hauritz confirmed he would remain with the Brisbane Heat, and Johan Botha was confirmed as the captain of the Adelaide Strikers.

Older, wiser White preferred to Smith

Cameron White’s return to the Australian team can be likened to that of the ageless Brad Hogg – a nod to experience over youth and to suitability for a very specific task, the wresting of the World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka in September

Cameron White’s return to the Australia team can be likened to that of the ageless Brad Hogg – a nod to experience over youth and to suitability for a very specific task, the wresting of the World Twenty20 title in Sri Lanka in September. Not given to euphemism or evasion when he speaks publicly about the composition of his teams, the national selector John Inverarity said candidly that White had beaten the young New South Wales allrounder Steve Smith for what was most likely the final place in the squad. He cited White’s greater experience – and recent strong touch – as the major reasons.”I’d say Steve Smith was on the cusp. In the end, Cameron White was preferred to Steve because of Cameron’s very good form in the IPL and then again he played for Northants in England and he had some very good innings there,” Inverarity said in Perth. “He’s in very good form. When he’s at his best, he’s a very destructive player. He’s in good nick at the moment and we’re really hoping he’ll perform.”I think Cameron came back into the squad because we thought in a pressure situation with his experience, he might be better than the younger ones. So that was a factor there but generally we’ve just looked for the best balanced side and the best cricketers.”It was only last summer that White lost his captaincy of the T20 team and his place in the squad altogether, towards the end of a prolonged run of poor batting form and scarcely any bowling. His role in Sri Lanka appears likely to be lower down the order than in the past, providing late innings fireworks and the occasional spell of his flat wrist-spin on the expected low, slow surfaces.”It’s up to George Bailey, the captain, to work out the batting order but I think it’s likely to be Matthew Wade probably at six, could well be Cameron White at seven and then either Glenn Maxwell or Dan Christian at eight,” Inverarity said. “So there’s a lot of depth and there’s three left-handers in the top seven so the left-right combination which makes it more difficult for the opposing bowlers.”There’s a lot of potential there. In any form of cricket whether it’s Test or T20, wickets in hand is always a good thing so you’ve just got to get that judgment right. Cameron in the games up in Darwin also bowled well and got some wickets up there. He’s just a little bit like [Shahid] Afridi with the spinners that don’t turn a lot but are often quite difficult to get away. He could be handy.”Inverarity made it patently clear in announcing his squad for the tournament that there was no real emphasis on the future in this squad. It is a 15-man group compiled entirely to claim the trophy, and to defy Australia’s lowly ninth ranking in T20 internationals. There will be a contrast, Inverarity noted, with the teams to be chosen for ODI cricket later on, as the panel continues to assess its options for that format’s 2015 World Cup.”This is a marquee series,” Inverarity said. “It is the World Cup, the ICC World T20, so we just picked the best players we could who we think are going to perform best. It will probably be during the ODI games during the Australian summer we’ll be looking more to the future, but in this squad we’re just looking at the next month.”Twenty20 cricket is very unpredictable. It really is. If you had a Wimbledon final and instead of the best of five sets, the best of three, I mean it’s just a reduced package. So yeah, I think we’ve got a very good squad, and a very versatile squad. A lot of bowling and a lot of batting, there’s a lot of strike power there. So we’ve got a good chance. Anything could happen, they’re prepared and certainly giving it their very best.”As for Hogg, Inverarity said he presented an irresistible case for selection during last summer’s BBL and had subsequently backed it up by training and testing very well in comparison to his younger fellow squad members.”Hogg’s done so well. I saw him in the Big Bash last year and he’s very fit, he’s in really good shape and full of enthusiasm as he always is,” Inverarity said. “So we’re hoping he does really well. He’s continued to do well since the Big Bash League in the IPL in the other T20 leagues around the world, he’s done very well.”He doesn’t [look like slowing down]. Not with his enthusiasm, he’s very fit. A lot of testing goes on and he comes out pretty well.”

'Chance for Simmons to prove fitness'

Stuart Williams: ‘Simmons will want to use this series to prove his fitness and readiness to return’•AFP

Stuart Williams, the assistant coach of West Indies’ A side, has said that the series against India A, that begins on Saturday in Barbados, will be a good platform for Lendl Simmons to prove his fitness and return to the West Indies national team.Simmons, who scored 1100 runs from 36 ODIs at 34.37, hasn’t played top-flight cricket since he injured his left knee during the WICB Regional Four-Day Tournament in February this year. “Simmons will want to use this series to prove his fitness and readiness to return,” Williams said. “He was excellent for West Indies in limited-overs cricket last year and he will want to get back in the groove and re-start his international career.Williams said that the series also gave legspinner Devendra Bishoo and batsman Kraigg Brathwaite, who played in the Test series against Australia in April, a chance to find form. “The ‘A’ team serves several purposes, and sometimes players lose form, and this series will be a chance for players like Bishoo and Brathwaite to regain their form and look to get back into the senior side,” Williams said. “They are both young, talented players and they have a lot to offer West Indies cricket.”Speaking after a training session on Thursday, Williams said that the ‘cohesion and camaraderie’ between his player would help them challenge the visitors. “They have brought a team with some experienced players (at the international level) so this series will be a good test for us,” Williams said. “It is always good to compete against good, strong opposition and push yourself to the limit. Our players recognise that this will be a ‘big’ series for them as they look to show continued development and progress.”Both India and West Indies have a mix of youth and experience in their side on the tour. Bishoo, Brathwaite and Simmons are among the capped West Indies players in the squad, while India have Cheteshwar Pujara, Rohit Sharma, Manoj Tiwary, Rahul Sharma and Ashok Dinda in their mix.Williams said that he was confident his side would put on a good show, as a number of players have competed at this level before. “We have a great bunch of players and it is clear we have a very good team spirit,” he said. “We have formed a good unit and everyone is familiar with each other. The team has quite a few players who were part of the Sagicor High Performance Centre, as well as others who have played together for the West Indies A team before.” The series will feature three four-day matches, two Twenty20s and three 50-over matches.Edited by Carlyle Laurie

A vitória muda o ambiente.

VEJA ABAIXO AS MUDANÇAS:

ELENCO:

TIME:
