I'm willing to take advice on captaincy – Yousuf

The Pakistan captain conceded that leadership may have affected his output, but insisted that he would like to continue as captain

Five of Mohammad Yousuf’s nine Tests as captain have been againstAustralia in Australia. Each one of them has been lost and the latestdefeat in Hobart, to seal yet another whitewash – Australia have four 3-0series wins on the trot now against Pakistan – is demoralising enough forthe inevitable movement to begin in Pakistan demanding his removal.Though Yousuf has been an amiable, well-liked leader of his men off thefield on this tour, his on-field captaincy has led to much criticism, particularly in its essential defensiveness; his timid tactics on thefourth morning at the SCG was the worst embodiment of it, allowingAustralia to sneak in and win a seemingly lost Test.Yousuf’s batting returns as captain have been poor; he averages under 34,with a solitary hundred in nine Tests. In this series, where much hasdepended on him, he hasn’t scored big, averaging less than 30 and makingjust one fifty in six innings. He conceded that leadership may haveaffected his output, but insisted that he would like to continue ascaptain.”Maybe [it has affected my batting]. I have good form but I don’t know, Iam just not making runs,” he said. “I’ve been in better form on this tour than in my last two tours but just not making enough runs. I enjoy my job and I wouldlike to keep doing it. I am trying to do it sincerely. Maybe my captaincyis affecting my batting. Maybe. There is a lot of pressure on me, to speakto batsmen and bowlers, but somebody has to do the captaincy. I have juststarted it and have only done six Tests so far and the circumstances Itook it up in, nobody wanted to do it. I have done ok I think.”I am a new captain and captains are not born. It takes time. I am willingto take help from anyone. They say I made mistakes. I probably did, forsure. It can happen. But tell me what to do, and then if I don’t learn oram not listening, then criticise me. I am ready, I will speak to anyoneabout it.”Right through the series Yousuf has insisted that expectations about hisside – “young and inexperienced” – have to be realistic, even if thisAustralia side was beatable, more so than past sides this decade.Australia, he said, were still the top side in cricket but bigger nameshave come in the past and returned vanquished.”Australia looked a beatable side people say, but what about ours, howbeatable did we look?” Yousuf asked. “We could’ve been better than them inSydney but the pressure got to us. We’ve been bowled out chasing 120before with bigger names in the team, like against South Africa inFaisalabad [in 1997-98]. That had such big names in it, you name me onehere, in this side.”What happened to past Pakistan teams here? Yes Australia was strong butwe were strong as well back then. Think of the names we have had, thebiggest names in Pakistan cricket, who have been part of losses here:Wasim, Waqar, Inzamam, Saeed Anwar, Shoaib, Akhtar, Saqlain Mushtaq, AzharMahmood, Abdul Razzaq, Moin Khan.”Pakistan’s next Test assignment will be Australia again, but this time inEngland in July this year, for what is a two-Test ‘home’ series. Thingsmight change by then, but patience and a few changes in the side mightmake for brighter prospects, said Yousuf.”If we are honest, all of us stakeholders, if we put together an honestteam, we can have a good team. It will take time. It took India time aswell, a lot of time. We can make this side better. We are weak in a fewareas. We lost the series and are disappointed. But the way they played, ayoung side, inexperienced, I am happy with that.”

AVFC must play Carney Chukwuemeka

Aston Villa have enjoyed an excellent start to life under manager Steven Gerrard, winning four of their six games under the Englishman. However, a recent outbreak of the pandemic in the Villa camp has halted progress after last weekend’s game against Burnley was postponed, meaning the Villans haven’t played for 12 days.

It appears as though Gerrard’s side have recovered from the outbreak and are set to host Chelsea as planned this evening, with the West Midlands side five points off of the top six.

Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea have struggled for consistency in recent weeks amid numerous injuries, winning one of their last four Premier League outings.

The contest could prove an opportunity for the Villans to claim a major scalp, but also a chance for Gerrard to experiment with a trip to Leeds to come just two days after Chelsea. It is time for the Aston Villa boss to hand youngster Carney Chukwuemeka a start.

Described to be “at a different level” by a former youth coach, Chukwuemeka has been a name that has been mentioned regularly amongst the Villa faithful this season with the 18-year-old starting to become a regular fixture in first-team squads and has featured in three of Gerrard’s games in charge.

Handed his first Premier League start by Dean Smith in August, the midfielder has slowly made progress this campaign despite reports of rejecting a new contract offer.

The Englishman has come off the bench against Manchester City, Leicester and Norwich and registered the assist for Ollie Watkins’ late clincher at Carrow Road last time out. He is certainly starting to knock on the door.

Gerrard, who will be absent from the touchline over the next two games having tested positive for the virus and could be tempted to change things up a bit with a hectic fixture schedule. Furthermore, the midfield may require some tinkering with Marvelous Nakamba facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.

The £2.25m-rated youngster will certainly be an option for the Villans in the coming games and, with injury and illness affecting the squad, a first Premier League start since August could be pending.

Trott was right to stand his ground – Pietersen

Kevin Pietersen has backed the actions of Jonathan Trott in standing his ground during their run-out mix-up at Centurion, which ended a partnership of 145 that was taking England towards a comfortable draw in the opening Test against South Africa.Pietersen was on 81 when, shortly after tea, he pushed the ball into the off side and sprinted for a single, but didn’t realise that Friedel de Wet, the bowler, could intercept the ball in his follow through. Pietersen continued to charge up the pitch which left Trott with a decision whether to sacrifice himself or preserve his wicket.Trott chose the latter by dropping his bat in the crease and continued to use up valuable time in a stand with Paul Collingwood before falling to the second new-ball to begin England’s late collapse.”There wasn’t a run there, he did the right thing and I was the one sent packing,” Pietersen said. “Hopefully it won’t happen again because we enjoyed batting together. We were trying to keep the South Africans quiet but they had a good go at us the last hour.”It was just a case of rotating the strike. We had been doing it the whole the game and it was a case of playing the ball into the off side and running. I couldn’t really hear him [Trott] shouting and the South Africans were also shouting. It was my mistake, I hold my hands up, but these things happen and hopefully we can form a great partnership again.””It wasn’t something I wanted to do. Trotty and I were doing so well for the team and we were in such a comfortable position to take something really positive out of the Test. But we still got a positive draw out of it and these mistakes happen and hopefully they won’t happen again.”Pietersen wants TV to check no-balls

Kevin Pietersen has followed England coach Andy Flower in saying that TV technology should be used to check for no-balls with every delivery. Replays showed Pietersen was bowled off a no-ball in the first innings at Centurion and he said such moments can change a Test.

“I think something needs to be done about it,” he said. “If you’re going to use the ‘referral’ system the way we’re using it now it should go all the way.

“You can win and lose Test matches on no-balls. For a [non-striking] batsman to be standing and watching whether the bowler is bowling a no-ball and then concentrating on the other end doesn’t seem good to me.

“If Graham Onions had lost his wicket to a no-ball in the last over of a Test match and we’d lost the Test series, with the technology we have nowadays there’s no excuse for it.”

Much is always made of whenever Pietersen returns to Durban but he admits this Test “will be special”. Ten years ago he played against the England touring side, captained by Nasser Hussain, for KwaZulu-Natal, scoring an unbeaten 61 at No. 9 alongside figures of 4 for 141. It was during that time that he began enquiring about opportunities in county cricket and the rest, as they say, is history.”It is incredible. But life changes, these things happen,” he said. “Who knows where all of us are going to be in 10 years’ time. My life has turned around in a big, big way from running around here as a kid to where I am now. I love it; I would never ever change anything.”However, he insisted the prospect of making Test runs where he used to play as a youngster is no different than any other occasion he has played for England. “I love getting Test runs at The Oval; I love getting Test runs at Lord’s; I love getting Test runs anywhere, I don’t mind. Here is absolutely no different.”But Graeme Smith hopes that Pietersen’s latest homecoming can be used as an advantage by South Africa. “If he is carrying any emotions in this Test the better for us,” he said. This Test will also bring the curtain down on a difficult year for Pietersen. He began as England captain before losing the position after the fall-out with Peter Moores and Pietersen was his normal, strutting self on the Caribbean tour. Then he was troubled by the Achilles injury – the first major injury problem in his career – and he missed the final three Ashes Test and only returned to action last month.”I just see every day as a challenge,” he said. “To be back playing Test cricket is something that I love doing and something I’m very fortunate to be doing. It’s not something I take for granted. 2009 hasn’t been the most fantastic time but I’m still playing cricket for England, we all love playing for England and are very privileged. This year hasn’t been fun, but hey-ho, life isn’t always good.”

Villa’s Douglas Luiz impressed v Liverpool

Steven Gerrard has enjoyed his start to life as a Premier League manager after swapping Rangers for Aston Villa last month, with his side winning three of their first four league games under the 41-year-old.

Game number five was a return to Anfield for the former Liverpool captain, for whom the Villa boss made more than 700 appearances as a player.

Despite a resolute performance from the Midlands outfit, the Villans lost out to Jurgen Klopp’s side as Mo Salah’s 67th-minute penalty proved the difference on Saturday. Defensively the visitors looked solid, but one player in particular who stood out was Douglas Luiz.

The 23-year-old was a real presence in the middle of the park for the visitors, completing 84% of his passes as well as having 65 touches. Furthermore, the Brazilian had a 100% long ball accuracy and also completed all of his attempted dribbles whilst winning 75% of his duels.

According to SofaScore, Luiz’s fellow midfielder John McGinn struggled to replicate similar numbers to his teammate. The Scotsman had a 72% passing accuracy whilst also having fewer touches (56).

Moreover, McGinn lost possession 19 times compared to Luiz’s 11, meaning that the 27-year-old lost the ball every 2.9 touches as opposed to every 5.9 touches for the Brazilian.

The Scotsman has been one of Gerrard’s standout performers since the 41-year-old took charge of Villa last month, averaging a performance rating of 7.95 prior to the Liverpool contest, according to SofaScore. However, the midfielder could only manage a 6.3/10 rating against the Reds, making it his worst performance under the new manager by some margin.

As for Luiz, it’s certainly promising to see the Brazilian getting a run of matches under Gerrard after endured a mixed start to the season, missing games against West Ham, Southampton and Brighton.

Alongside McGinn and Marvelous Nakamba, it appears that the 23-year-old is part of the Villa manager’s preferred midfield trio, with that particular combination now starting the last three games. Today’s performance suggests that Luiz is making the most of the chances being handed to him by Gerrard.

Conte wants Ndombele out

As per Football Insider, an update has emerged on Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Tanguy Ndombele’s future at the club and what manager Antonio Conte intends in January.

The Lowdown: Future up in the air…

The club record signing, brought in from Lyon two years ago (BBC), has been at the centre of reports linking him with a move away since the summer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ndombele allegedly informed Tottenham chiefs of his desire to leave north London before August, but after a move failed to materialise, the 24-year-old has been in and out the team.

Conte’s arrival gifted the Frenchman yet another new start after the sackings of Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Nuno Espirito Santo but Spurs’ latest manager has already called out his work ethic.

Now, in an update on his future, FI have shared some news on Conte’s sale stance.

The Latest: Conte wants him gone…

As per their information, the Italian ‘wants Ndombele out if a deal can be done’ with Spurs now aware of interest from Italian giants Juventus, the former club of transfer chief Fabio Paratici.

Football Insider also reiterate that Conte has already told Spurs chiefs to offload the midfielder in January, and while a permanent sale isn’t ruled out, an obligation-to-buy loan or standard temporary deal are more realistic options.

The Verdict: Time to go?

We believe cutting ties with Ndombele could be the only way forward at this point, even despite his obvious ability, with the former Ligue 1 sensation finishing 2020/2021 as Tottenham’s best dribbler on average with 2.2 completed take-ons per 90 in the Premier League (WhoScored).

He’s also been described as ‘unplayable’ by former Spurs keeper Joe Hart during his time in north London (Rio Ferdinand to BT via Spurs Web), but Ndombele’s quality is marred by a consistent lack of application.

Chairman Daniel Levy famously sat down with the £200,000-per-week ace to discuss his future during Amazon’s fly-on-the-wall documentary ‘All or Nothing’, and that was in his first season at Hotspur Way.

Having played under three new managers since Pochettino first brought him to Spurs, now may be time to consider parting ways.

Taylor ready and willing for England

James Taylor has declared himself far better prepared for Test cricket now than he was on debut last year, despite conceding that his unbeaten century against the Australians in Hove was less than fluent

James Taylor has declared himself far better prepared for Test cricket now than he was on debut last year, despite conceding that his unbeaten century against the Australians in Hove was less than fluent. Taylor and his temporary county team-mate Monty Panesar both enjoyed their audition against the Australians and both will hope to face them again next week after being named in England’s 14-man squad for the Old Trafford Test.Panesar’s chances of playing hinge largely on the condition of the pitch in Manchester, while Taylor’s hopes rest on the condition of Kevin Pietersen’s troublesome calf. Taylor, parachuted in from Nottinghamshire in order to gain some experience against the Australians, scratched around for his 121 not out and was dropped twice before he reached triple-figures but said if he received the nod in Manchester he would be ready.”It wasn’t the best innings I’ve played, it wasn’t one of my most fluent at all, but it’s about finding a way when you’re not feeling in the best touch and I did that,” Taylor said. “Mentally and technically I feel in a good place. I’m delighted to score runs, I don’t really mind how. It’s not how, it’s how many, and that’s how I go about my game.”Taylor’s two Tests against South Africa last year brought scores of 34, 10 and 4, and he was told by the selectors to go away, work on some technical issues and churn out the runs at domestic level. He has done that, piling up 824 for Nottinghamshire in the County Championship this season, and his hundred against the Australians was his third first-class century this summer.”I’ve worked hard on my game since I was left out,” he said. “It was a great experience playing against South Africa but it was all too brief, and I’ve gone away and worked really hard since getting left out. I’ve piled on the runs like the selectors asked me to and I feel like I’m in a good place now.”I was in a kind of a no-win situation in this game, but the purpose was to spend time in the middle against the red ball after all the T20 cricket in recent weeks and it was nice to do that against a decent attack. It was definitely a pressure situation – if I hadn’t scored any runs everybody would have commented on that, but luckily I did and got what I needed out of the game.”Like Taylor, Panesar got what he wanted out of the match against the Australians, picking up 3 for 70 in the first innings, and it was another confidence-booster after a difficult start to the summer. Panesar has managed only 21 wickets at 40.09 during the Championship this season but he said some remedial work with Peter Such, England’s spin bowling coach, had put his season back on track.”I kind of struggled early season, I was not getting the action I wanted to get, and then I went away and did a bit of work with Peter Such on a one-to-one basis to get my action in the right order,” Panesar said. “Over the Twenty20 period I’ve used the time to get my action in order, and in the Championship games and in the dry weather we’ve had I’ve tried to perform and prepare myself if the call came.”Panesar has an outstanding record at Old Trafford, where he has collected 25 wickets at 16.72 in three Tests, but it is five years since he last played a Test there. If, as expected, the teams are greeted with a dry pitch, a two-man spin attack could well be employed by England, and Panesar said he would fancy his chances against the Australians in such circumstances.”The England team have put them slightly under pressure, but the Australia team is a very competitive team, they are going to come hard at us. You always feel maybe against spin there is an opportunity,” he said. “But they are good players, you can’t completely discard Australia, they’re a competitive cricket team – but I do feel even in this game I was always in with a chance.”
