Leeds again linked with Vedat Muriqi move

Leeds United are still interested in signing Lazio striker Vedat Muriqi in the January transfer window, with the Serie A side now desperate to get rid.

The Lowdown: Leeds linked with Muriqi move

The Whites are still waiting to conduct any business this month, with new signings potentially needed in order to stave off the threat of relegation.

Muriqi has been linked with a move to Elland Road a number of times, with Leeds seemingly seeing him as a good option to bring in and bolster the attack.

The 27-year-old has fallen out of favour at Lazio this season, making just one solitary start in Serie A and none in the Europa League, so a January exit may be on the cards.

The Latest: Lazio desperate to get rid

According to Corriere della Sera [via Sport Witness], Leeds are looking at signing the Kosovo international on loan, and they are hoping to add a €10m (£8.3m) option to buy him in the summer.

While that information had already been reported in the week, this fresh report adds that Muqiri is seen as a ‘problem’ for Lazio, saying that the Biancocelesti supporters ‘mock him’ and Maurizio Sarri needs to sell in order to unlock funds to spend in the market.

The Verdict: Bamford’s ideal deputy?

Muriqi hasn’t registered a single goal or assist in 14 appearances this season, which suggests he wouldn’t be a particularly exciting signing for Leeds.

However, a loan move has less of a risk element to it and his international record speaks for itself, with 18 goals coming his way for Kosovo in 37 caps.

Depth is key for Marcelo Bielsa in the coming months, and with Patrick Bamford hopefully back soon, Muriqi could be a strong backup option, taking the burden off the Leeds star and offering a different type of centre-forward, standing at 6 foot 4.

The key factor may well be whether Victor Orta and co will be able to convince Lazio to allow the player to leave on a temporary basis, rather than for an immediate fee.

In other news, Leeds are reportedly ‘pressing’ to sign another player this month. Find out who it is here.

Graham Napier out to prove selectors wrong

Graham Napier is determined to use the IPL as a chance to prove the England selectors were wrong for overlooking him for the preliminary World Twenty20 squad

Graham Napier, the Essex allrounder, is determined to use the IPL as a chance to prove the England selectors were wrong for overlooking him for the preliminary 30-man World Twenty20 squad.Napier couldn’t find a place in the expanded group despite having been part of the squad for the previous tournament in England. He didn’t earn a start during that event and still hasn’t had a chance to show he can replicate his county form at the top level.Napier is the highest English Twenty20 wicket-taker with 88 scalps in 63 matches and helped Central Districts qualify for the Champions League Twenty20 when he was their overseas player this season. In 2008 he hit an astonishing 152 against Sussex in the Twenty20 Cup which included a world record 16 sixes.”I’m deeply disappointed not to be involved in the 30-man squad, having played well in Twenty20 cricket over the winter,” Napier told his website, grahamnapier.com, after arriving in India to link with Mumbai Indians. “I am currently the leading wicket-taker in Twenty20 cricket and have the ability to take the attack to the opposition with the bat if required. I feel Twenty20 is a form of the game that suits me well and the more experience I’ve gained in it the more effective I have become.”There is an opportunity for me over the next few weeks – as one of only eight English players involved in the IPL – to show the England selectors what they are missing out on,” he added. “But my job now is to focus on being as good a player I can be for Mumbai Indians, Essex and Central Districts. I have always been told that if you work hard you get your rewards so I need to keep doing that.”Napier, one of eight English players set to take part in the IPL, has travelled to India having received security assurances and is confident measures will be in place throughout the tournament.”I was always scheduled to come on this date and it was just a case of the PCA working hard to get assurances from the IPL in terms of security,” he said. “Having been involved with the Mumbai Indians last year I know the level of security they had out in South Africa. I felt comfortable the security would be at a high enough level to accommodate us here.”

Players' lobby warns of withdrawals from IPL

Tim May, the chief executive of the international players union FICA, has warned the IPL could suffer from a spate of player withdrawals due to security concerns over playing in India

Tim May, the chief executive of FICA, the international players’ union, has warned of a spate of player withdrawals from the IPL due to security concerns over playing in India. He said he had received calls from several players expressing doubt over their participation in the tournament but was yet to arrive at a definitive assessment of the security arrangements in place.”There is an extremely high level of concern from a number of players from a number of countries about the IPL and security,” May told BBC Sport. “I think you’ll find that some players are more risk averse than others and will probably stay at home.”May’s statements came on a day the Jaipur police said they had received intelligence inputs of a terrorist threat relating to the one-day international in the city between India and South Africa on Sunday. “We have received an input. We are on full alert,” BL Soni, the inspector-general of police, was quoted as saying on IBNlive.com. “We are making adequate security arrangements especially after the Pune blast. Everyone who comes to watch the match will be frisked. There is no need to worry.”This followed reported terrorist threats targeting the Commonwealth Games and the Hockey World Cup, both due to be hosted in India this year. Earlier, the Shiv Sena, a right-wing regional political party, had claimed it would not allow Australian cricketers to participate in the competition as a protest against attacks on Indian students in Australia.May referred to these threats. “We had previously been advised by security experts that a high-profile event such as the IPL, leading up to the Commonwealth Games, may represent a significant target for terrorism,” he said. “It’s obviously concerning, though not necessarily surprising, to hear about those specific threats.”It’s up to the individual players whether they go to the IPL. All we can gauge an opinion on is the number of concerned calls we have received in the last few weeks. Let’s just say those calls are increasing by the day.”May said he was awaiting an independent security report over the arrangements made for the IPL. “Until that review is complete I’m not in a position to answer whether the security arrangements are adequate to cover the risks and I haven’t seen any plans.A lot will ride on players’ decisions after the delivery of this independent security report.”Adding to the confusion was an about-turn, within the day, by Shane Warne, the Rajasthan Royals captain. He was initially quoted as saying he had “second thoughts” over playing in the IPL. “The threats have certainly got me thinking twice and are of deep concern to athletes across a number of sports,” Warne said. Later on Thursday, he wrote on his Twitter feed he was happy to tour India “now that the threats have been removed”.

Malik and Yousuf should be 'kicked out' – Nazar

The former Pakistan batsman, has said Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik deserved to be “kicked out of the team” in the wake of their comments to the media

Mudassar Nazar: “What sort of an example are Yousuf and Malik giving to the younger players with this sort of behaviour?”•AFP

Mudassar Nazar, the former Pakistan batsman, has said Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik deserved to be “kicked out of the team” in the wake of their comments to the media following their forgettable tour of Australia. Nazar said the two senior players – who already have a fractious history – should never have gone public about the turbulent dressing-room atmosphere and suggest that that their own relationship had turned sour again.Yousuf, who took over as captain for the tours of New Zealand and Australia, told a television channel that one player was responsible for disrupting the team unity on tour but stopped short of naming the player, preferring to reveal it to the PCB chairman Ijaz Butt. Malik, the former captain, widely regarded as the target of Yousuf’s remarks, hit back by questioning Yousuf’s leadership abilities. This occurred after the team was whitewashed in all matches against Australia.”The Yousuf and Malik feud has been simmering for a while” Nazar told in Dubai. “Yousuf was very active in the press and he has had a go at Malik and other players too quite a few times in the past. The slanging match that has now taken place before us all has, in my opinion, been started by Yousuf and now Malik has responded too.”Both of the players are under central contracts and should not have been allowed to behave in such a way in front of the whole world. Yousuf should not have been allowed to go on television and give such an interview and Malik should not have gone to the press like this in response to Yousuf’s comments”.Nazar said their behaviour will be a bad influence on the younger players and wanted them to be punished. “What sort of an example are Yousuf and Malik giving to the younger players with this sort of behaviour? We have already seen the likes of Umar Akmal misbehaving and if others see Malik and Yousuf carrying on like this, then they themselves will think it is fine to behave like this. Both Malik and Yousuf should be taken to task by the board, they should be made an example of and kicked out of the team”.The PCB, which has set up a six-member committee to look into the reasons behind the team’s failure in the two tours, had questioned both Yousuf and Malik on Saturday, besides coach Intikhab Alam, assistant coach Aaqib Javed and opener Salman Butt. It had began work on Friday by interviewing Shahid Afridi and the team manager Abdur Raqueeb. However, Nazar disapproved of the idea of setting up such committees. “The committee will achieve absolutely nothing. We have seen these committees set up before and there is a lot of talk, but nothing materialises from these”.Nazar also took a shot at Ijaz Butt, saying the PCB also didn’t handle the situation well. “What is really mystifying is that Ijaz Butt has given Shoaib Malik the nod of approval to respond in the press to Yousuf’s comments. Butt should not have done this and this has made the situation even worse”.Nazar, who played 76 Tests and 122 ODIs, has coached in Pakistan’s National Cricket Academy and is now with the ICC’s Global Cricket Academy in Dubai. He said he wasn’t interested in coaching Pakistan, if offered the chance.”The job is not for me, thank you very much. I would never do the job in future. I believe they are looking for a foreign coach and good luck to the person who takes on the role. In my opinion only a desperate man would take on the role”.

Celtic closing in on permanent Jota deal

Celtic are close to turning Jota’s loan move into a permanent transfer, according to Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Jota back in Portugal

Ange Postecoglou has reaped the rewards after the club brought the winger to Parkhead over the summer on an initial loan deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-copy/” title=”Celtic updates!! (Copy)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Jota has scored eight times and registered six assists in just 18 games, but he missed the last seven fixtures prior to the winter break with a hamstring injury.

He has since returned to parent club Benfica to assess his recovery, but it appears as if the Hoops are making the most of the 22-year-old’s time on the sidelines and are closing in on a permanent swoop.

The Latest: Source shares Jota update

Football Insider shared a pundit piece on Saturday, shortly before Celtic announced the signing of Johnny Kenny, with Paddy Kenny reacting to the possibility of Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers joining on a full-time basis.

Within their report, the site was informed by a Celtic source on Saturday that the Hoops are now close to signing Jota following talks with Benfica during the week.

The Verdict: Massive

The option-to-buy fee reportedly stands at £6.5m, so on top of a possible £6m for Carter-Vickers, Celtic could be making a serious investment. However, considering how influential Jota has been for the Hoops, a deal for that amount could actually turn out to be a bargain in the long run.

He is currently valued at £4.95m by Transfermarkt, so should he continue to perform as he has done so far in Scotland, you’d expect that it’s just a matter of time until his market value hits eight figures.

Celtic have shown in the past with Odsonne Edouard that a big-money addition can work following a successful loan when it comes to making an impact and a profit, so hopefully it will be the same with Jota.

Jacob Ramsey has proven his worth at Villa

Aston Villa have a number of fantastic young players and are well known for developing and nurturing young talent such as Jack Grealish, who the club sold for £100m to Manchester City in the summer.

Another young player could now be following in the footsteps of his midfield predecessor, as Jacob Ramsey continues to make an impressive mark on the first team under new manager Steven Gerrard.

According to Transfermarkt, the midfielder’s value has increased tenfold from this time last year, going from a market value of £1.35m in December 2020 to £13.5m now, which is an incredible leap for a player of his age and a testament to the progress he has made in 2021.

Gerrard has not been shy in praising the 20-year-old during his short time working with him at Villa Park, labelling him a “fantastic talent” in a press conference as he said: “He’s already a force. I think he’s a fantastic talent. At such a young age, you can see he plays with maturity, he’s got a really good game understanding and I think he’s further ahead than I was at 20.”

The former Rangers boss even predicted international call-ups for the youngster, adding to his aforementioned comments in the conference: “Without putting too much pressure on the kid – you can see him moving through the international age groups at speed – if he keeps consistency in his game, I think he can go all the way to the top.”

One of Ramsey’s most notable performances this season came against Norwich City a couple of weeks ago, when he scored a wonder goal to open the scoring at Carrow Road against former Villa boss Dean Smith’s relegation-battling Canaries.

According to SofaScore, the goal wasn’t the only outstanding contribution he made to the match, with an 86% pass accuracy and 70% duels won on the night.

Villa fans will surely be buzzing at the prospect of Ramsey playing and developing under Gerrard, who is on the exclusive Premier League Hall of Fame list for his incredible achievements during his 18 seasons in midfield for Liverpool. The youngster can gain invaluable coaching and knowledge in his position from his manager and improve even further over the course of 2022.

I'm willing to take advice on captaincy – Yousuf

The Pakistan captain conceded that leadership may have affected his output, but insisted that he would like to continue as captain

Osman Samiuddin in Hobart18-Jan-2010

Mohammad Yousuf: “I have just started it and have only done six Tests so far and the circumstances I took it up in, nobody wanted to do it”•Getty Images

Five of Mohammad Yousuf’s nine Tests as captain have been againstAustralia in Australia. Each one of them has been lost and the latestdefeat in Hobart, to seal yet another whitewash – Australia have four 3-0series wins on the trot now against Pakistan – is demoralising enough forthe inevitable movement to begin in Pakistan demanding his removal.Though Yousuf has been an amiable, well-liked leader of his men off thefield on this tour, his on-field captaincy has led to much criticism, particularly in its essential defensiveness; his timid tactics on thefourth morning at the SCG was the worst embodiment of it, allowingAustralia to sneak in and win a seemingly lost Test.Yousuf’s batting returns as captain have been poor; he averages under 34,with a solitary hundred in nine Tests. In this series, where much hasdepended on him, he hasn’t scored big, averaging less than 30 and makingjust one fifty in six innings. He conceded that leadership may haveaffected his output, but insisted that he would like to continue ascaptain.”Maybe [it has affected my batting]. I have good form but I don’t know, Iam just not making runs,” he said. “I’ve been in better form on this tour than in my last two tours but just not making enough runs. I enjoy my job and I wouldlike to keep doing it. I am trying to do it sincerely. Maybe my captaincyis affecting my batting. Maybe. There is a lot of pressure on me, to speakto batsmen and bowlers, but somebody has to do the captaincy. I have juststarted it and have only done six Tests so far and the circumstances Itook it up in, nobody wanted to do it. I have done ok I think.”I am a new captain and captains are not born. It takes time. I am willingto take help from anyone. They say I made mistakes. I probably did, forsure. It can happen. But tell me what to do, and then if I don’t learn oram not listening, then criticise me. I am ready, I will speak to anyoneabout it.”Right through the series Yousuf has insisted that expectations about hisside – “young and inexperienced” – have to be realistic, even if thisAustralia side was beatable, more so than past sides this decade.Australia, he said, were still the top side in cricket but bigger nameshave come in the past and returned vanquished.”Australia looked a beatable side people say, but what about ours, howbeatable did we look?” Yousuf asked. “We could’ve been better than them inSydney but the pressure got to us. We’ve been bowled out chasing 120before with bigger names in the team, like against South Africa inFaisalabad [in 1997-98]. That had such big names in it, you name me onehere, in this side.”What happened to past Pakistan teams here? Yes Australia was strong butwe were strong as well back then. Think of the names we have had, thebiggest names in Pakistan cricket, who have been part of losses here:Wasim, Waqar, Inzamam, Saeed Anwar, Shoaib, Akhtar, Saqlain Mushtaq, AzharMahmood, Abdul Razzaq, Moin Khan.”Pakistan’s next Test assignment will be Australia again, but this time inEngland in July this year, for what is a two-Test ‘home’ series. Thingsmight change by then, but patience and a few changes in the side mightmake for brighter prospects, said Yousuf.”If we are honest, all of us stakeholders, if we put together an honestteam, we can have a good team. It will take time. It took India time aswell, a lot of time. We can make this side better. We are weak in a fewareas. We lost the series and are disappointed. But the way they played, ayoung side, inexperienced, I am happy with that.”
