MS Dhoni has signed a three-year endorsement deal worth approximately Rs 2.1 billion ($ 42 million) with a sports marketing agency. The deal surpasses the three-year deal worth Rs 1.8 billion ($38 million) that Sachin Tendulkar signed back in 2006.Dhoni will be represented by a joint venture between Rhiti Sports Management run by Arun Pandey, a former Indian first class cricketer, and advertising agency Mindscapes. The venture will be responsible for the gamut of Dhoni’s endorsements, from brand associations to digital rights, as well as his presence on social networking sites. Mindscapes was already managing Dhoni’s endorsements prior to the deal, but not the rest of his properties.Rhiti Sports General Manager Sanjay Pandey confirmed the deal to Cricinfo, saying it was signed about a week ago.According to the , Rhiti and Mindscapes snapped Dhoni ahead of a number of other agencies such as IMG, Percept Group, PMG (promoted by Sunil Gavaskar) and the World Sport Group. The Indian captain currently endorses 22 brands, including PepsiCo, Reebok, Aircel, and Godrej.Dhoni is said to charge up to Rs 60 million( $1.3 million) an endorsement per year and according to magazine, took home $10 million last year, $8 million of which came from endorsements, making him the world’s highest earning cricketer. An agency typically gets a percentage of the total endorsement value of its client. With the World Cup being held in the India next year, Dhoni’s brand value stands to increase as companies will want to take advantage of the publicity the event is bound to attract. He had signed with Mindscape last year after ending his previous deal with sports management firm Gameplan Sports in 2008. Rhiti Sports also manages fellow Indian cricketers R P Singh and Harbhajan Singh.

Nash and Chanderpaul script Windies fightback

West Indies finally claimed ownership of an entire day’s play and it came via a defiant double-century partnership between the two most patient batsmen in the line-up, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash

West Indies finally claimed ownership of an entire day’s play and it came via a defiant double-century partnership between the two most patient batsmen in the line-up, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Brendan Nash. The pair hit counter-attacking centuries to negate the aggression of the seamers and blunt out anything the slower bowlers dished out on what continued to be an unresponsive surface. West Indies breezed past the follow-on mark and redressed the balance after two days of toil in the field. What was impressive from West Indies’ point of view was the willingness to stick it out for as long as possible. South Africa had them on a leash on a slow morning, but the hosts didn’t allow the pressure of two hours of attritional cricket to get to their heads and try anything silly. In that sense, West Indies were lucky that Nash and Chanderpaul were around to guide them. They may not match each other stance for stance or stroke for stroke, but in terms of temperament, they’re on par. Their understanding of each other’s game was evident in the way they kept pushing the scoring with singles and twos. There was greater freedom of expression in the batting once Nash walked in after lunch. The batsmen were prepared to reach out to deliveries wide of the off stump and also exploit the wide gaps on the on side if the bowlers dropped it short. Before lunch, Chanderpaul looked circumspect outside his off stump against Morne Morkel. When Dale Steyn banged one in short, Chanderpaul took his eyes off and copped a blow on the grill. After initially exercising caution outside his off stump, Chanderpaul started reaching out to the fuller ones shaping away, opening the face of the bat to glide it through the off side. Paul Harris hardly got any turn or bounce and Chanderpaul swept him powerfully behind square leg to bring up his fifty. There was a backward short leg in place for the spinner, but he was unemployed through the day.Chanderpaul was also lucky to have a like-minded partner in Nash, back in his familiar No.5 position. He began by swatting Jacques Kallis past midwicket and didn’t appear to be too bothered about the packed off-side field, which included two slips and two gullys. Morkel was guilty of giving width and Nash obliged by spanking fours past backward point off the front foot. Apart from a few edges to slip, some of which went for four, it was a neat innings. The docile surface had no demons in it to worry the batsmen and Chanderpaul exploited that by regularly shuffling across the stumps to either flick the full-pitched balls or pull the short deliveries. Nash too wasn’t afraid to swat away the short deliveries and that seemed to wind up an exasperated Steyn, who had a few words to say to him.Nash’s strength was primarily on the off side. Morkel was ineffective against him as Nash brought out the horizontal bat shots to steer the ball past gully. When he bowled it even shorter, Nash slashed over third man. Harris came round the wicket but Nash rocked back and cut him for fours in front of square. He raced towards his century with a slash over slip off Steyn and biffed one past midwicket to reach three figures for the second time in his career, watched by his family in the stands. He had added 220 with Chanderpaul before AB de Villiers sent him back with a sharp bit of fielding, effecting a direct hit from gully.Chanderpaul too progressed towards his century by milking the spinners, even employing the slog sweep. He reached his 22nd century with a square drive to point, and at the fag end of the day, brought up his 150. Dwayne Bravo played a quiet little supporting act after Nash’s fall, adding an unbeaten 53 with Chanderpaul. The pace of cricket was in contrast to the morning session, when only 40 runs were scored. Though South Africa didn’t run through the top order as they would have hoped, they succeeded in applying pressure with their probing line outside off stump, backed by intelligent field placements. Boundary balls were few and far between as the seamers kept shaping the ball away with an expectant slip cordon and close catchers like silly mid-off waiting for a mistake.Soon after reaching his fifty, Chris Gayle was out dragging a full ball from Morkel on to his stumps without any foot movement. The patient Narsingh Deonarine steered towards point at the stroke of lunch to bring up a workmanlike fifty. Having spent enough time getting his eye in, Deonarine pressed the pedal after lunch against the slower pace of Kallis. A few whiplashes over the off side gave the innings much-needed impetus but he soon caused his own downfall when, cramped for room trying to cut Steyn from round the wicket, he chopped it onto his stumps. It was similar to Gayle’s dismissal, but in this instance it was more a wrong choice of shot.Deonarine and Gayle would have punished themselves for not converting their fifties. Nash and Chanderpaul ensured they didn’t make the same mistake.

Ben Godfrey out ‘for a period’

Everton are set to be without Ben Godfrey for the coming weeks after the Englishman was forced off in the early stages of the Toffees’ 4-1 FA Cup fourth-round win over Brentford.

What’s the latest?

According to new manager Frank Lampard, it isn’t sounding good. The 43-year-old said: “It’s a hamstring injury which is to be assessed.

“We’ll have to let it settle for two days and then scan it, not good. He’ll be missing for a period of time depending on the severity of the injury, but it’s a hamstring.”

The 24-year-old only lasted 14 minutes of the Englishman’s first game as Everton boss before suffering the injury, being replaced by Yerry Mina who later scored the first goal of the Lampard era.

Fans will be sweating

Having made the cut for his first game, it appears as though Godfrey will be high up the pecking order under the new Everton manager, at least would’ve been for the opening matches.

Moreover, Lampard opted to play a 3-4-3 formation against the Bees which means that he’ll need a handful of fit centre-backs available at all times to continue with the same set-up, which makes the defender’s injury a particularly hefty blow, one that will surely leave supporters sweating.

Although this season has been somewhat of a disaster so far for the Merseyside club, Godfrey has been a regular, making 17 Premier League appearances, having been out of the squad for the first three matches of the campaign.

In fairness, none of Everton’s centre-backs have been particularly great this campaign with the Toffees conceding 35 goals in their 21 league matches thus far.

Furthermore, the Blues have only mustered three clean sheets in their 24 matches across all competitions with their regular leakiness at the back something Lampard will have to see to immediately.

When it comes to matches played this season, only Michael Keane has played more at centre-back than Godfrey, playing 19 games in the top-flight.

There have certainly been glimpses of promise though from the former Shrewsbury defender after his move from Norwich City in October 2020 and, at 24, Godfrey will only improve.

Steven Davies delivered a timely demonstration of his quality with an impressive batting display as the England Lions pushed Bangladesh to the brink of a crushing defeat at Derby. The 23-year-old wicketkeeper top-scored with 81 from 88 balls to earn the Lions a lead of 76 in front of the England selectors and then took five catches as the tourists folded feebly to 139 for 9.Liam Plunkett and Ravi Bopara each took three wickets to leave the tourists only 63 runs ahead and staring at a demoralising defeat ahead of next week’s first Test. Davies toured Bangladesh with England earlier this year and endorsed his international credentials in front of national team director Andy Flower and the other selectors who were meeting at the County Ground ahead of next week’s Lord’s Test. The Lions were in trouble at 148 for 5, still 72 runs adrift, two overs after Davies came in, but the Surrey gloveman batted confidently to take his side past the tourists’ first-innings total of 220.He hit nine fours to reach his fifty from 65 balls, and the Lions were 61 in front when he was superbly caught at wide long-on. The Lions had started the second day 95 runs behind and should have lost Andrew Gale before he added to his overnight 63 in the second over of a sunny morning but Rubel Hossain spilled an easy chance. However only 22 runs had been added in 13 overs when James Taylor was caught behind down the leg side when hooking after struggling for 82 balls for 12. Gale went two overs later for 74 when he pulled unconvincingly at Shafiul Islam and was caught at long leg, but Davies and Chris Woakes then shared what turned out to be a valuable stand. They added 84 for the sixth wicket before Woakes got a leading edge straight after lunch but Davies and James Harris put on 43 to give the Lions a decent lead that was turned into a match-winning one by their bowlers.Tamim Iqbal carved Steve Kirby for six off the hands off Gale at deep point but he started the slide when a skied pull landed in the gloves of Davies. Junaed Siddique was caught behind off Woakes for a duck and the Warwickshire seamer than had Imrul Kayes pouched low at second slip before tea.The collapse continued with Mohammad Ashraful caught down the leg side off a glove for one and Mushfiqur Rahim gave Davies another victim when he pushed at Plunkett with no foot movement. The weakness of the Bangladesh side was shown again when Mahmudullah fell to a wild hook at Plunkett with his team only 10 runs in front, and a two-day finish was on when Bopara took three wickets in an over. But Jahural Islam battled for an unbeaten 44 and Rubel Hossain resisted for seven overs to at least take the game into the third day.

Herói no Corinthians, Caíque França elege melhor defesa contra o PSV

Lalit Modi, the IPL chairman, has said he will attend Monday’s meeting of the league’s governing council. Modi, whose position is in the balance following a barrage of charges against him, has released an agenda for the meeting that includes a request for all complaints to be supported by documents.”On the agenda, will be a discussion on any complaints received in writing from members of the governing council against the chairman, other members of the council and/or the BCCI. Members of the governing council have been requested to give all such complaints in writing with the requisite supporting documents at the meeting to the chairman so they can be replied in full,” Modi’s statement said.Modi’s decision to attend the meeting, which he first made public on his Twitter feed, is a surprise given that he had indicated he would stay away. It came about even as senior officials in the BCCI were huddled in meetings deliberating on his fate. There are attempts being made, Cricinfo has learned, to persuade Modi to resign – the other option is to sack him, which would be a far more messy process and would entail scrutiny of financial documents relating to the current controversy.
