This was the game the summer so desperately needed. A tight contest, in front of a full house, fought to the bitter end as England held their nerve, securing a four-wicket victory with three balls remaining to ensure Andrew Strauss’s fantastic 126 didn’t go to waste. For a while that looked a close-run thing as the middle order stuttered in the final 10 overs, but Michael Yardy and Tim Bresnan retained their composure to keep the home side’s winning run going, and hoist them up to No. 2 in the World ODI rankings.Strauss and Jonathan Trott added 146 for the second wicket to break the back of a stiff 295-run chase after Pakistan’s most complete batting display of the tour. England were never in total command of the asking-rate, but the requirement was looking more challenging than they would have liked after some less-than-clear thinking during the batting Powerplay. After 40 overs they were 221 for 3 – exactly the same score that Pakistan had reached- however, Strauss fell lbw sweeping at Saeed Ajmal before Eoin Morgan, England’s cool-headed finisher, picked out the only fielder on the off-side boundary at deep point. Ravi Bopara then failed to clear long-off against Ajmal in the penultimate over to keep the punters on tenterhooks. But Yardy is also proving himself to be a consummate closer of run-chases having twice been in the middle during the Twenty20 internationals, and he collected a pair of vital boundaries off Umar Gul and Ajmal. Needing 13 off the last two overs, all that was required was clear thinking, but Bopara tried to take advantage of the fielding restrictions and failed, which left Bresnan to guide the side home in front of his home crowd. He cut his first ball through the covers then, in the last over from Gul, top-edged a pull off the keeper to level the scores and extinguish the doubts.Bresnan had shown calmness earlier in the summer against Australia, at Old Trafford, as England nicked a one-wicket win having looked like throwing victory away, but it was fitting that this win was secured in marginally shambolic fashion as Bresnan chanced a non-existent single to mid-off only for Fawad Alam’s throw to miss. So after a few deep breaths and nervous moments England could celebrate a 2-0 cushion in the five-match series and it would have been harsh on Strauss if his innings had ended in a losing cause. There are still those who question Strauss’s place in the one-day side because of a concern his style – dominated by square-of-the-wicket shots – won’t be so successful on the slower subcontinent pitches England will face during the World Cup. But he can do no more than score a bucketload of runs, which he has done in recent one-day matches with this being his second hundred in three games following the 154 he struck against Bangladesh at Edgbaston.Strauss’s game is also evolving and while he will probably never plunder runs between mid-off and mid-on, they are still viable scoring areas. His swipe for six over midwicket off Shahid Afridi to reach fifty showed how his game has developed against slow bowling since his return to the one-day arena 18 months ago. It was his 21st six in seven years of ODI cricket. Eleven of those have come since June.Pakistan will rue two moments; firstly when Mohammad Irfan spilled a catch at short fine-leg with Strauss on 23, then when he was on 38 as Kamran Akmal held a superb catch diving down the leg-side off Gul and Pakistan were convinced there was a glove. Billy Doctrove, however, was unmoved. Still, though, the visitors’ fielding was poor with too many fumbles and poor arms in the outfield.Steven Davies had given another eye-catching glimpse of his ability with 26 off 21 balls to help launch the innings positively before edging behind against Shoaib Akthar and then Strauss was joined by Trott in the crucial partnership. Trott continued to bat in the bubble he has occupied all summer, content to work the gaps while his captain was batting so fluently. His fifty came from 67 balls and progress was serene for England with barely more than a run a ball required over the last 17 overs. That changed, though, when Trott was run out from short third-man having survived an lbw shout only to charge down the pitch for a reaction single. Paul Collingwood again couldn’t get his innings going and picked out long-off against Afridi with Pakistan suddenly believing. They couldn’t quite pull off a comeback, but there were continued signs of improvement throughout.Kamran led from the top with a powerful 72-ball 74. That was followed by a maiden one-day fifty from the impressive Asad Shafiq while Mohammad Yousuf contributed a calm 46. England were below their usual high standards especially with the ground fielding, while Stuart Broad’s 4 for 81 was the most expensive four-wicket haul in ODI history.James Anderson was the only bowler to offer early control as Kamran took to Bresnan and Broad in an opening stand of 122 with Mohammad Hafeez – Pakistan’s best in any international during their stay in England. Kamran collected his second consecutive fifty, this one at a run a ball, before playing across the line at Collingwood’s second delivery. However, for once the middle order had a platform set for them which allowed Yousuf and Shafiq to consolidate before attacking again. Yousuf, who offered one very tough opportunity on 18 when Morgan couldn’t quite make up considerable ground at deep midwicket, fell when he tried to guide Broad to third man, but Shafiq continued to show his talent when he skipped down the pitch and launched Graeme Swann over long-on.But Pakistan didn’t make full use of their Powerplay as Broad, despite being expensive, claimed three wickets in seven balls while Bresnan and Anderson had their yorkers on target. That lack of late ignition meant the total didn’t cross 300 and that proved crucial in the final outcome.

Leeds: Ian Poveda set for March return

Leeds United wide forward Ian Poveda is set to return to action next month, re-joining Blackburn Rovers for the rest of the season, The Lancashire Telegraph report.

The Lowdown: Months out

Poveda, labelled as ‘exciting’ by Noel Whelan, has been out of action for months now, similar to Kalvin Phillips and Liam Cooper.

Capable of playing as a right or left winger, Poveda required ankle surgery back in November after suffering a serious problem against Sheffield United.

The attacker had made eight appearances for Blackburn in a season-long loan, and that spell at Ewood Park looks set to continue going off a fresh update.

The Latest: Blackburn return

The Lancashire Telegraph’s Rich Sharpe shared a story on Poveda on Tuesday.

Within his report, he suggested that the winger will re-join Rovers next month for the rest of the campaign, with Tony Mowbray hopeful the 22-year-old can contribute to the club’s push for promotion.

The Verdict: Good news

Leeds have had plenty of injury woes this season, with several loanees also picking up serious issues.

Poveda and Mateusz Bogusz have both had surgery in 2021/22, but it’s good news knowing that the former of the two has a chance of returning to action before the campaign comes to a close.

Who knows, a strong end to the season with Blackburn could catch the eye of Leeds officials, and with two years remaining on his Elland Road deal, his Whites career may not be over.

James Cameron scripts Worcestershire fightback

Had anyone suggested, this time last year, that Chris Tremlett would consistently lead the Surrey attack and push for an England recall, they would have been dismissed as insane. After all, Tremlett only managed ten wickets last season. He has taken just one five-wicket haul in the last four seasons and is said to be injury prone and lack heart.Yet Tremlett continues to provide a compelling case for a recall. Belying a typically slow and low New Road surface, he picked up another four wickets and earned his side the upper-hand in a game they simply must win if they are to sustain any hopes of promotion. He now has 34 championship scalps at just 20 apiece this campaign and is forcing the doubters to think again. There are no five-wicket hauls as yet – indeed there have only been seven in his career – but Tremlett is attracting the attention of the selectors once again. If England are looking for a back-up to Steve Finn and Stuart Broad, Tremlett may well be their man. He’s not quite the finished article. He perhaps doesn’t force the batsmen to play quite as much as he should, while a few too many deliveries pass harmlessly down the legside. And it is, of course, one thing to bowl in the genteel surroundings of New Road and quite another to do it in an Ashes Test at the MCG.But, when he gets it right, Tremlett really is a horrid proposition. In terms of generating life on flat wickets, he is pretty much unmatched. The delivery that dismissed the in-form Daryl Mitchell (who had scored 448 runs and been out just twice in the last two games) was a case in point: pitching just back of a good length, it reared horribly and took the shoulder of the bat on its way to second slip. Unplayable is an over-used word but, in this instance, it seems unavoidable.Tremlett’s hostility, combined with Gareth Batty’s guile, earned Surrey a strong position. At lunch, with Worcestershire on 106 for 5, it seemed the hosts’ brittle batting might be blown away. That they were not is due to two factors. The first was Surrey’s close catching, which requires attention, and the second was a century partnership between two young and inexperienced Worcestershire batsmen.James Cameron and Dave Wheeldon fought hard. Wheeldon, playing his tenth first-class match, took 65 to score his 65 overs, while Cameron, in just his seventh first-class game, showed both the application and technique to suggest he could have a decent future at this level. Together they added 105 in 36 overs.Wheeldon is not the sort of batsman to empty bars. Patient in the extreme, his game is built upon watchful defence and sensible accumulation. While he plays in the V, it’s generally the V between third-man and fine-leg. He did produce the rare flourish, however. Twice he launched into crunching square drives, while there was one memorable cut off Batty. For the main, however, he was happy to pick up his runs through nudges and deflections. Suffice it to say, his batting would be completely suitable for the pregnant or those with weak hearts.Cameron was more aggressive. Skipping down the pitch, he lofted Batty for boundaries over long-off, while he also cut the seamers well. A former Zimbabwe U19 player, he impressed while playing Grade cricket in Western Australia and was recommended to Worcestershire by David Houghton. As Cameron puts it, he had to leave Zimbabwe as there “was no future for us there,” but he admits he would have to think hard if the national selectors came calling.”The thought of playing international cricket would be great,” he said, “but it means I would have to go back to Zimbabwe and renounce my intentions of playing for England. It’s a bit early to think about that. In January I wouldn’t even have believed I’d be playing county cricket.”Well though the pair batted, Surrey may feel they squandered a great opportunity. Both men were reprieved early in their innings. Cameron, on 6, was missed by Stewart Walters off Tremlett at second slip, while Wheeldon was dropped by Matthew Spriegel at third slip when he’d scored just four. Had either chance been taken, Worcestershire would surely have struggled to make 200. A better short-leg fielder than Tom Lancefield might have swallowed one of numerous sharp chances offered off Batty, too.As it was, Worcestershire were grateful for the pair’s fortitude. Several of their top-order colleagues played more than a bit-part in their own downfall, with Moeen Ali leaving a straight one and Vikram Solanki’s loose drive beaten by a lovely, flighted off-break in Batty’s first over. It was a tame end to an innings that promised much.Having just resigned the captaincy, Solanki batted like a man freed from shackles, taking four boundaries from one Stuart Meaker over and looking in glorious form. Alexei Kervezee was bowled by a beauty that nipped back sharply, while Shakib Al Hasan over-balanced and played across a full one.Wheeldon’s defiance was eventually ended by a magnificent ball. Jade Dernbach, who might just have the best slower ball in the game, completely deceived Wheeldon with a beauty from the back of the hand that struck the bamboozled batsmen on the foot.Tremlett returned to lure Cameron, five short of a maiden century, into an edged drive that was taken by a juggling Walters at slip, while Ben Cox missed a sweep, Gareth Andrew missed a swipe and an intimidated Mason popped up a catch to short-leg.It is interesting to note, meanwhile, that both teams are fielding seven players aged under 25 in this game. Worcestershire have been obliged to select young players in order to maximise their income from the ECB (clubs receive incentives for fielding young players), while many of their more experienced performers have defected. As a result, they have sought to secure their brightest young players on long-term deals. Richard Jones, Alexei Kervezee and Adam Shantry have all signed recently and the club hope they will provide the nucleus of a decent side for years to come. While they remain on the search for seam bowlers, they are unlikely to sign any batsmen this winterSurrey, meanwhile, are in a rebuilding phase of their own. Not only have they decided to do without an overseas player for the rest of the season, but the omission of Usman Afzaal suggests he may be looking for a new county shortly. Their second XI, meanwhile, contains ten men aged under 21, though the club is expected to recruit once again this winter.

MS Dhoni has signed a three-year endorsement deal worth approximately Rs 2.1 billion ($ 42 million) with a sports marketing agency. The deal surpasses the three-year deal worth Rs 1.8 billion ($38 million) that Sachin Tendulkar signed back in 2006.Dhoni will be represented by a joint venture between Rhiti Sports Management run by Arun Pandey, a former Indian first class cricketer, and advertising agency Mindscapes. The venture will be responsible for the gamut of Dhoni’s endorsements, from brand associations to digital rights, as well as his presence on social networking sites. Mindscapes was already managing Dhoni’s endorsements prior to the deal, but not the rest of his properties.Rhiti Sports General Manager Sanjay Pandey confirmed the deal to Cricinfo, saying it was signed about a week ago.According to the , Rhiti and Mindscapes snapped Dhoni ahead of a number of other agencies such as IMG, Percept Group, PMG (promoted by Sunil Gavaskar) and the World Sport Group. The Indian captain currently endorses 22 brands, including PepsiCo, Reebok, Aircel, and Godrej.Dhoni is said to charge up to Rs 60 million( $1.3 million) an endorsement per year and according to magazine, took home $10 million last year, $8 million of which came from endorsements, making him the world’s highest earning cricketer. An agency typically gets a percentage of the total endorsement value of its client. With the World Cup being held in the India next year, Dhoni’s brand value stands to increase as companies will want to take advantage of the publicity the event is bound to attract. He had signed with Mindscape last year after ending his previous deal with sports management firm Gameplan Sports in 2008. Rhiti Sports also manages fellow Indian cricketers R P Singh and Harbhajan Singh.

Gerrard eyes up Villa move for Joe Gomez

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is prioritising bringing Liverpool defender Joe Gomez to the Midlands in the summer transfer window, according to a new transfer rumour which has emerged.

The Lowdown: Gomez out of favour at Liverpool

Gomez has enjoyed awful luck with injuries in recent years and it has seen him lose his regular spot in the Reds’ starting line-up. Indeed, the 24-year-old made his first Premier League start of the season in Saturday’s 3-1 win at home to Norwich, highlighting his lack of playing time.

It could be that the defender sees a move away from Liverpool this summer as beneficial to his future hopes of regular football, and a new rumour suggests as much.

The Latest: Gerrard keen on Gomez move

According to Football Insider, a Villa source has claimed that Liverpool legend Gerrard sees the centre-back as a primary transfer target for the Midlands club as the 41-year-old looks to bolster his options in that area of the pitch.

The Villans were linked with a move for Gomez in January and plan to go back in for him at the end of the season.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-20/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Does it make sense?

Deciding what to do with Gomez is tricky for Klopp, as the Englishman is an excellent defender but is probably Liverpool’s fourth-choice centre-back at this moment.

Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are all ahead of him in the pecking order, and the 24-year-old’s injury woes present a risk that he may never quite reach his 2019/20 level again, when his 22 Premier League starts helped Liverpool to win the title.

With the 2022 World Cup looming, Gomez may feel that his best chance of making England’s squad is by leaving Anfield. Perhaps a loan move would be the best outcome for all concerned, giving Klopp more time to assess the defender’s future rather than cutting him loose altogether, having called him ‘sensational’ in the past.

Rangers could repeat Bassey masterclass

Rangers have been active in the January transfer window and have completed three signings so far this month and two permanent departures.

James Sands, Amad Diallo and John Souttar coming in – the latter being on a pre-contract deal. Nathan Patterson has also left Ibrox for a record fee, joining Premier League side Everton, along with Juninho Bacuna leaving to sign for Birmingham.

One player who appears set to potentially complete the club’s signings this month is free agent defender Johnly Yfeko, formerly of Leicester. He is reportedly set to sign on a free transfer after undergoing a trial with the Scottish giants last week.

Bassey 2.0

By bringing Yfeko to Ibrox, van Bronckhorst could repeat the club’s Calvin Bassey masterclass.

The Gers signed the current first-team defender on a free transfer from the Foxes and he has come on leaps and bounds this season to establish himself as a key player for the Dutchman.

Bassey is capable of playing at left-back and centre-back, forcing his way into the XI in the latter and making a name for himself alongside Connor Goldson. He has started 12 games at centre-back since van Bronckhorst’s arrival and the Gers are unbeaten in those matches, keeping eight clean sheets in that time.

The Nigerian international has averaged a SofaScore rating of 6.97 across 17 games in the Premiership to date, showing that he has been an impressive performer for the club. Van Bronckhorst has put his faith in him and the defender has, largely, paid that back with excellent displays.

This proves that Ross Wilson pulled off a masterclass in the deal to sign him from Leicester for nothing and they could replicate that success with Yfeko.

He is very similar to Bassey in that he is a young defender, who used to play for Leicester, capable of slotting in at left-back or centre-back. The Gers could allow him to learn from the current Light Blues star and mold his game on him as he develops in the academy set-up.

Of course, there is no guaranteeing that it will provide the same outcome but there appears to be little risk in trying, given that he is set to join on a free transfer. Van Bronckhorst could enjoy helping him fulfil his potential in training if he is given the chance to impress for the first team and it could be another masterclass if he does become a success for the Glasgow giants.

Ben Godfrey out ‘for a period’

Everton are set to be without Ben Godfrey for the coming weeks after the Englishman was forced off in the early stages of the Toffees’ 4-1 FA Cup fourth-round win over Brentford.

What’s the latest?

According to new manager Frank Lampard, it isn’t sounding good. The 43-year-old said: “It’s a hamstring injury which is to be assessed.

“We’ll have to let it settle for two days and then scan it, not good. He’ll be missing for a period of time depending on the severity of the injury, but it’s a hamstring.”

The 24-year-old only lasted 14 minutes of the Englishman’s first game as Everton boss before suffering the injury, being replaced by Yerry Mina who later scored the first goal of the Lampard era.

Fans will be sweating

Having made the cut for his first game, it appears as though Godfrey will be high up the pecking order under the new Everton manager, at least would’ve been for the opening matches.

Moreover, Lampard opted to play a 3-4-3 formation against the Bees which means that he’ll need a handful of fit centre-backs available at all times to continue with the same set-up, which makes the defender’s injury a particularly hefty blow, one that will surely leave supporters sweating.

Although this season has been somewhat of a disaster so far for the Merseyside club, Godfrey has been a regular, making 17 Premier League appearances, having been out of the squad for the first three matches of the campaign.

In fairness, none of Everton’s centre-backs have been particularly great this campaign with the Toffees conceding 35 goals in their 21 league matches thus far.

Furthermore, the Blues have only mustered three clean sheets in their 24 matches across all competitions with their regular leakiness at the back something Lampard will have to see to immediately.

When it comes to matches played this season, only Michael Keane has played more at centre-back than Godfrey, playing 19 games in the top-flight.

There have certainly been glimpses of promise though from the former Shrewsbury defender after his move from Norwich City in October 2020 and, at 24, Godfrey will only improve.
