Siddle and Haddin named for international return

Peter Siddle is set to play his first match for Australia in nine months after being named in the squad for Sunday’s Twenty20 against Sri Lanka at the WACA. The wicketkeeper Brad Haddin will also make his comeback after a long injury lay-off and will replace Tim Paine, while Michael Hussey and Mitchell Johnson have been rested. The 12-man squad for the first international of the home summer is made up entirely of Victoria and New South Wales players and features the spinner Steve O’Keefe, who made his debut for Australia in England in July. John Hastings, the Victoria allrounder who played his first ODI last week in India, has also been included for a potential Twenty20 debut. The non-selection of Hussey and Johnson is understandable, as they will instead warm up for the Ashes with a Sheffield Shield match for Western Australia against South Australia beginning this Friday. However, the same theory was not used for the Test opener Shane Watson, who will play the Twenty20 instead of a first-class outing for New South Wales against Queensland that begins on the same day.Watson, Haddin and the captain Michael Clarke are the only Test certainties included in the Twenty20 line-up, although every player will have the chance for at least one Sheffield Shield game before the first Ashes Test. Siddle is also aiming to re-establish his credentials after spending the winter laid up with a stress fracture in his back.Siddle, 25, had been a regular member of the Test attack until his injury struck, but he faces a challenge to force his way back in ahead of one of Mitchell Johnson, Doug Bollinger or Ben Hilfenhaus. His best chance might be if the selectors choose four fast men on a potentially seam-friendly Gabba pitch for the first Test.”Peter is a key bowler in all forms of the game and has made a return from injury and is now ready to take his place in this Australia Twenty20 squad,” the chairman of selectors, Andrew Hilditch, said. Siddle made his initial return for Victoria in the Champions League Twenty20, and is now playing in the Sheffield Shield match against Tasmania.Haddin is also on his way back after a lengthy period on the sidelines, having not played for Australia since May due to an elbow problem. His absence allowed Paine to prove himself an impressive option at Test and one-day level, but there is no doubt that Haddin will remain the No. 1 man for the Ashes.Hilditch said: “It is unfortunate for Tim Paine, having played so well for Australia recently, to miss out on this squad but Brad has made a very good recovery from his elbow injury and is an established member of our side in all forms of the game.”The squad also sees some of our best young talent continuing to increase their international experience and exposure. Players like Steve Smith, Stephen O’Keefe and John Hastings all have exciting all-round skills for Twenty20 cricket and it will be great to see them against a very strong Sri Lanka squad.”Daniel Christian and Nathan Hauritz, who were in Australia’s ICC World Twenty20 squad this year, were left out, while Ryan Harris and Shaun Tait were unavailable due to injuries. And there was no place for Brett Lee, who is in the early stages of his comeback after an injury-plagued year and had been keen to target the Sri Lanka series for an international return.”It would have been his plan to be ready for this but with only two one-day games after an extensive break we want to see him play a bit more domestic cricket yet,” Hilditch said. “Certainly there was a lengthy discussion even for this squad, but it really felt too early.”Australia squad David Warner, Shane Watson, Brad Haddin (wk), Michael Clarke (capt), Cameron White, David Hussey, Steven Smith, John Hastings, Steve O’Keefe, Peter Siddle, Clint McKay, Dirk Nannes.

Newcastle transfer news on Nunez

Keith Downie has now dropped some exciting Newcastle United transfer news involving Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Offer reports

The St. James’ Park faithful have reportedly already made an offer for Nunez, as they look to chase a marquee signing in the summer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He is one of the most sought-after players in European football at the moment after scoring 33 goals in just 38 matches in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Nunez watched

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Sky Sports journalist and North East reporter Downie has now shared that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) have indeed ‘watched’ Nunez ahead of a potential move in the summer, although he did not confirm if an offer has been made:

“Nunez is someone they’ve looked at, they’ve watched. I think a proven goalscorer on the European stage will be one of the main priorities, if not the priority in the summer.”

The Verdict: Exciting

It is certainly exciting for the Toon Army to be linked with a player like Nunez going into the summer, even if Downie believes they are just at the scouting stage right now.

After their 1-0 win at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday night, they are almost certainly safe now on 40 points, and so can start planning ahead in the long-term project.

They will struggle to attract Nunez ahead of other teams with no European football to offer, but at 22 years of age, you would think that there could be another opportunity to sign him down the line, once the Tyneside outfit really start to make a name for themselves on the world stage.

Rangers predicted starting XI

Giovani van Bronckhorst’s Glasgow Rangers side have the chance to secure a place in the final of the Scottish Cup this afternoon, with Celtic being the only thing standing between the Ibrox side and a spot in the last two.

The Gers head into today’s clash full of confidence after beating Braga 3-1 on Thursday at Ibrox to make it through to the semi-finals of the Europa League.

However, having played 120 minutes of football in order to do so, this could put Van Bronckhorst’s outfit at a disadvantage in terms of the fitness and freshness of his players, especially given how Celtic haven’t played since last weekend.

The Hoops’ previous outing saw them beat St. Johnstone 7-0 in the Scottish Premiership, meaning that they too will be heading into this afternoon’s clash full of confidence.

In terms of what the Dutchman’s starting XI could look like on this occasion, here’s how we feel Rangers could line up to take on their Old Firm rivals.

Predicted XI

In goal, having featured in all three of Rangers’ previous Scottish Cup games this season, we think Van Bronckhorst will stay loyal to Jon McLaughlin and keep him in the team to try and prevent Celtic from scoring.

For the back four, it seems likely that club captain James Tavernier will lead his team from the right-back position once again, with Connor Goldson next to him at centre-back.

Having admitted to suffering from cramp in midweek, rather than a serious injury, Borna Barisic is our pick to start at left-back.

Then, for the final centre-back spot, we predict that Van Bronckhorst will take out Calvin Bassey, who had been described as looking “exhausted” on international duty last month, while bringing in Rangers’ “superhuman” Leon Balogun – in the words of journalist Paul Kendrick – in his place.

Moving onto the midfield, we can see the Rangers boss making another big change, this time with Ryan Jack dropping out and being replaced by Glen Kamara, in order to give his side a bit more defensive solidity, while John Lundstram retains his starting berth.

Then, we think the trio of Aaron Ramsey, Joe Aribo and Ryan Kent will line up once again after starting in midweek.

Finally, with Alfredo Morelos out injured for the rest of the season, it seems likely that Kemar Roofe will again lead the line to try and fire the Gers to the Scottish Cup final.

Rangers team to face Celtic: McLaughlin (GK), Barisic (LB), Balogun (CB), Goldson (CB), Tavernier (RB), Lundstram (CM), Kamara (CM), Kent (LW), Aribo (CAM), Ramsey (RW), Roofe (CF)

West Ham predicted starting XI to face Lyon

West Ham United have another massive match ahead of them tonight as they take on Lyon in their second leg Europa League quarter-final clash.

The first leg saw the Hammers draw 1-1 with the Ligue 1 side at the London Stadium after a goal from Tanguy Ndombele cancelled out Jarrod Bowen’s opener.

Just before the half-time whistle blew, West Ham full-back Aaron Cresswell was sent off for a foul on Lyon striker Moussa Dembele, meaning that he will miss tonight’s game as a result.

Looking ahead to the match in France, David Moyes will also be without centre-back Kurt Zouma after he picked up an ankle injury during the 2-0 defeat against Brentford at the weekend.

With all that in mind, here’s how we feel the Hammers could line up for this important showdown, with four changes from Sunday’s starting XI against the Bees.

In goal, having played in all but one of West Ham’s Europa League games this season, it seems likely that Alphonse Areola will start once more, with Lukasz Fabianski dropping out from Sunday.

In a back four, with Zouma and Cresswell unavailable, we can see Issa Diop and Ben Johnson coming in to replace those two next to Craig Dawson and Vladimir Coufal.

For the defensive midfield two, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Declan Rice and Tomas Soucek line up next to each other ahead of the back four.

Ahead of that duo, we think Jarrod Bowen and Pablo Fornals will keep their places in the team to see if they can get on the scoresheet or provide service for Michail Antonio ahead of them.

One other change that we think Moyes could make is to take out Manuel Lanzini, who failed to have any sort of impact against Brentford and has been branded “stupid” in the past by Trevor Sinclair.

In his place, we predict that the Irons boss will restore Said Benrahma to the team to see if he can be as “unplayable” as he has been at times in the past, according to Joe Cole.

Whatever starting XI Moyes ultimately selects, this is undoubtedly a massive game for the east London club, as a win would see them into their first European semi-final since 1976.

Corinthians é condenado a pagar ação milionária a ex-zagueiro Chicão

James Cameron scripts Worcestershire fightback

Had anyone suggested, this time last year, that Chris Tremlett would consistently lead the Surrey attack and push for an England recall, they would have been dismissed as insane. After all, Tremlett only managed ten wickets last season. He has taken just one five-wicket haul in the last four seasons and is said to be injury prone and lack heart.Yet Tremlett continues to provide a compelling case for a recall. Belying a typically slow and low New Road surface, he picked up another four wickets and earned his side the upper-hand in a game they simply must win if they are to sustain any hopes of promotion. He now has 34 championship scalps at just 20 apiece this campaign and is forcing the doubters to think again. There are no five-wicket hauls as yet – indeed there have only been seven in his career – but Tremlett is attracting the attention of the selectors once again. If England are looking for a back-up to Steve Finn and Stuart Broad, Tremlett may well be their man. He’s not quite the finished article. He perhaps doesn’t force the batsmen to play quite as much as he should, while a few too many deliveries pass harmlessly down the legside. And it is, of course, one thing to bowl in the genteel surroundings of New Road and quite another to do it in an Ashes Test at the MCG.But, when he gets it right, Tremlett really is a horrid proposition. In terms of generating life on flat wickets, he is pretty much unmatched. The delivery that dismissed the in-form Daryl Mitchell (who had scored 448 runs and been out just twice in the last two games) was a case in point: pitching just back of a good length, it reared horribly and took the shoulder of the bat on its way to second slip. Unplayable is an over-used word but, in this instance, it seems unavoidable.Tremlett’s hostility, combined with Gareth Batty’s guile, earned Surrey a strong position. At lunch, with Worcestershire on 106 for 5, it seemed the hosts’ brittle batting might be blown away. That they were not is due to two factors. The first was Surrey’s close catching, which requires attention, and the second was a century partnership between two young and inexperienced Worcestershire batsmen.James Cameron and Dave Wheeldon fought hard. Wheeldon, playing his tenth first-class match, took 65 to score his 65 overs, while Cameron, in just his seventh first-class game, showed both the application and technique to suggest he could have a decent future at this level. Together they added 105 in 36 overs.Wheeldon is not the sort of batsman to empty bars. Patient in the extreme, his game is built upon watchful defence and sensible accumulation. While he plays in the V, it’s generally the V between third-man and fine-leg. He did produce the rare flourish, however. Twice he launched into crunching square drives, while there was one memorable cut off Batty. For the main, however, he was happy to pick up his runs through nudges and deflections. Suffice it to say, his batting would be completely suitable for the pregnant or those with weak hearts.Cameron was more aggressive. Skipping down the pitch, he lofted Batty for boundaries over long-off, while he also cut the seamers well. A former Zimbabwe U19 player, he impressed while playing Grade cricket in Western Australia and was recommended to Worcestershire by David Houghton. As Cameron puts it, he had to leave Zimbabwe as there “was no future for us there,” but he admits he would have to think hard if the national selectors came calling.”The thought of playing international cricket would be great,” he said, “but it means I would have to go back to Zimbabwe and renounce my intentions of playing for England. It’s a bit early to think about that. In January I wouldn’t even have believed I’d be playing county cricket.”Well though the pair batted, Surrey may feel they squandered a great opportunity. Both men were reprieved early in their innings. Cameron, on 6, was missed by Stewart Walters off Tremlett at second slip, while Wheeldon was dropped by Matthew Spriegel at third slip when he’d scored just four. Had either chance been taken, Worcestershire would surely have struggled to make 200. A better short-leg fielder than Tom Lancefield might have swallowed one of numerous sharp chances offered off Batty, too.As it was, Worcestershire were grateful for the pair’s fortitude. Several of their top-order colleagues played more than a bit-part in their own downfall, with Moeen Ali leaving a straight one and Vikram Solanki’s loose drive beaten by a lovely, flighted off-break in Batty’s first over. It was a tame end to an innings that promised much.Having just resigned the captaincy, Solanki batted like a man freed from shackles, taking four boundaries from one Stuart Meaker over and looking in glorious form. Alexei Kervezee was bowled by a beauty that nipped back sharply, while Shakib Al Hasan over-balanced and played across a full one.Wheeldon’s defiance was eventually ended by a magnificent ball. Jade Dernbach, who might just have the best slower ball in the game, completely deceived Wheeldon with a beauty from the back of the hand that struck the bamboozled batsmen on the foot.Tremlett returned to lure Cameron, five short of a maiden century, into an edged drive that was taken by a juggling Walters at slip, while Ben Cox missed a sweep, Gareth Andrew missed a swipe and an intimidated Mason popped up a catch to short-leg.It is interesting to note, meanwhile, that both teams are fielding seven players aged under 25 in this game. Worcestershire have been obliged to select young players in order to maximise their income from the ECB (clubs receive incentives for fielding young players), while many of their more experienced performers have defected. As a result, they have sought to secure their brightest young players on long-term deals. Richard Jones, Alexei Kervezee and Adam Shantry have all signed recently and the club hope they will provide the nucleus of a decent side for years to come. While they remain on the search for seam bowlers, they are unlikely to sign any batsmen this winterSurrey, meanwhile, are in a rebuilding phase of their own. Not only have they decided to do without an overseas player for the rest of the season, but the omission of Usman Afzaal suggests he may be looking for a new county shortly. Their second XI, meanwhile, contains ten men aged under 21, though the club is expected to recruit once again this winter.
