Johnson's six gives Australia advantage

An enthralling day of action moved the third Test along in fast forward at the WACA with Mitchell Johnson reviving his career and Australia’s Ashes fortunes with a brutal 6 for 38 to dismiss England for 187

An enthralling day of action moved the third Test along in fast forward at the WACA with Mitchell Johnson reviving his career and Australia’s Ashes fortunes with a brutal 6 for 38 to dismiss England for 187. However, the home side didn’t extend the advantage without further top-order failures as Steven Finn and Chris Tremlett caused problems although by stumps Shane Watson was unbeaten on 61 and the lead was 200.After eight days of England dominance this one went comprehensively to Australia and how desperately they needed it. If the visitors had batted throughout the day the Ashes would have been hard to save, but by the close Australia’s belief was being restored after the efforts of their most mercurial cricketer. Johnson’s morning burst of 4 for 7 knocked the stuffing out of England’s previously prolific line up. The whole feeling of the series changed with each booming inswinger and all ten wickets fell for 109.Conceding an advantage of 81 on a lively surface left England playing catch-up, but they aren’t without hope if the bowlers can leave a target under 350. In 2008-09, South Africa chased down 414 on the way to topping Australia’s home record – after Johnson took 8 for 61 in the first innings – although that was a flatter surface.England’s quicks did their best to even the ledger during the final session. Phillip Hughes was worked over for the second time in the match before edging to third slip off Finn, who went for 14 in his first over but continued the knack of picking up wickets. His next was Ricky Ponting as his poor form continued with a glove down the leg side which was ruled out on review.Michael Clarke began by pulling his first ball for four and added three more boundaries as he tried to impose himself on the attack with the bowlers overdoing the short balls. Clarke, though, paid the price for his approach when he dragged Tremlett into his stumps to leave Australia 3 for 64 and England scenting further evening inroads. But Watson played positively, latching onto to the loose deliveries, to reach another half-century and the run machine of Mike Hussey was setting another platform in a stand of 55.The 81-run advantage Australia earned during the first two sessions could become priceless. After a Test and a half of churning out runs by the bucket load, England’s batting subsided after a promising opening stand of 78. Johnson’s introduction changed the complexion as rediscovered the swing which makes him such a deadly prospect when he’s on song. His hours in the nets since being dropped have clearly worked and he also rode on the confidence of his batting effort to produce a wonderful spell of 9-3-20-4, which included a burst of three wickets in 12 balls to crash through England’s previously formidable top order. The scalping of Kevin Pietersen, Jonathan Trott, and Paul Collingwood were classic left-armer to right-hander dismissals as the batsmen were beaten by sharp movement.Cook looked set to continue his prolific series before driving at a full delivery which shaped away, giving Hussey a low catch in the gully. Trott only lasted eight balls when Johnson beat a flat-footed drive with one that swung back into the right hander and would have taken off stump.Pietersen’s stay was even briefer as Johnson followed two off-stump deliveries with another inducker which struck the batsman in front of middle and leg. His request for a review was a waste. Initially, Collingwood was given not out when he was beaten by pace and swing, but Johnson persuaded Ponting to use a review and it proved the right call. Johnson returned in the afternoon to take out the final two wickets, shattering Tremlett’s stumps and winning his duel with Anderson, and appeared a cricketer reborn.Smart Stats

England lost ten wickets for 109 runs, in the process collapsing from 78 for 0 to 187 all out. This aggregate of 109 runs between the second wicket and last wicket is the tenth worst for England against Australia and their worst at Perth.

Mitchell Johnson picked up 6 for 38, which is his finest bowling performance against England. It is also his second five wicket haul against them after the 5 for 69 at Leeds in 2009.

Ian Bell scored his third half century of the Ashes and his 11th against Australia overall. He is yet to score a century in this series though.

England have made six scores below 200 at Perth. They have gone on to lose on all five previous occasions.

Since March 2010, Ricky Ponting has scored five fifties in 16 innings at an average of just under 29. In eight of those innings, he has failed to cross 10.

He was well supported by his fellow quicks. Ben Hilfenhaus, who hasn’t taken a wicket since the third ball of the series, deserved something but instead it was Ryan Harris who took the spoils, ending attractive half-centuries from Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell. Strauss was offered a life on 16 when Watson and Brad Haddin both left it to the other to hold an edge, but after reaching a positive fifty edged a good ball that climbed off a length. No one in the England team, though, is playing better than Bell. He launched his innings with a perfect straight drive and showed outstanding composure to weather the initial Johnson storm. His timing remained perfect whenever the bowlers strayed in a display that showed how much he has developed since four years ago in Australia. At stages some of Australia’s tactics were curious, especially when they persisted with the short ball but the plan did bring Matt Prior’s wicket. The ball after being hit on the shoulder by Peter Siddle, a ball struck his body, bounced back onto the glove and down onto leg stump. It was Siddle’s first wicket since the opening day in Brisbane when he took six.Graeme Swann offered solid support to Bell in a useful stand of 36 and received plenty of short stuff which he handled reasonably well. However, Harris returned the attack, after treatment on a minor calf problem, to find the edge and Bell felt he had to attack when he edge a booming drive which was superbly held by Ponting at second slip. Bell’s departure guaranteed Australia a sizeable advantage and suddenly the Ashes series was back in the balance.

Will New Zealand put up a fight?

ESPNcricinfo previews the second ODI between India and New Zealand in Jaipur

The Preview by Sriram Veera30-Nov-2010Match FactsWednesday, December 1
Start time 14.30 (09.00 GMT)
Daniel Vettori is back. Can he help New Zealand stay in the hunt for the trophy?•AFP

The Big PictureFirst the good news: Daniel Vettori, who missed the first ODI, is fit to play the second game. However it’s learnt that Brendon McCullum is a doubtful starter and New Zealand, who are already missing Jesse Ryder, have lost the services of Daryl Tuffey due to a bicep strain.Of late, there seems to be a pattern to New Zealand’s one-day chases. They appear to dawdle initially and allow the required rate to climb, and then lose wickets in a heap in a frantic effort to keep the chase on track. In the absence of three key players, it was always going to be difficult for New Zealand to put up a fight in the first one-dayer.Without McCullum (if he doesn’t get fit in time) and Ryder, much will depend on Ross Taylor. He had a very average Test series but took his first step towards regaining form with 66 in the first match. Martin Guptill provides aggression at the top and Kane Williamson adds stability in the middle. Gareth Hopkins, the wicketkeeper, has however been disappointing so far on this tour.India would have been gladdened by a couple of developments in the first match. Virat Kohli hit his second successive hundred and the way he paced and built his innings stood out. R Ashwin too impressed with his control and composure in the Powerplays, while Munaf Patel caught the eye with a disciplined effort. There were couple of concerns as well. Sreesanth picked up two wickets in the end but struggled with the new ball. His career economy rate is over six and he has struggled with his lengths in the shorter formats. Suresh Raina hit 71 against Australia in his last one-dayer before this series but went 15 games before that without a half-century. MS Dhoni had said he hoped that Raina will get a break after this match, ahead of the South Africa tour, but had added that it would depend on his performance in the first two games.Form guide(most recent first)
India: WWLWL
New Zealand: LLLLL
Watch out for…Kane Williamson looked solid in the Tests and has hit an ODI hundred against Bangladesh’s spinners in his last series. The Jaipur track is reported to play slow and aid turn, and Williamson’s skills will come to the fore.M Vijay impressed with his brief, but skilful, innings in the first game on a wicket that aided the seamers initially. He played his shots and looked good for more before he threw his wicket away. It’s something that we have seen in the past as well: he has been guilty of failing to convert starts. Can he play a big knock tomorrow?Pitch and conditionsThe pitch is expected to play slow, but a bigger worry could be dew in the evening. “Obviously dew is a big factor, they do use the chemical to reduce its effect, but I don’t think it makes much of a difference,” Gautam Gambhir said. “The wicket appears to be on the slower side and it might a spin a bit. We could [play an extra spinner]. Because it looks a little dry, it might spin if we bowl first.”TeamsVettori will replace Tuffey and, given the conditions, New Zealand could retain Nathan McCullum as well. They will hope that Brendon McCullum wins the race for fitness.New Zealand (probable): 1 Jamie How, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Ross Taylor, 4 Scott Styris, 5 Kane Williamson, 6 Grant Elliott / James Franklin, 7 Daniel Vettori (capt), 8 Gareth Hopkins (wk), 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Andy McKay
With Gambhir mulling the possibility of playing an extra spinner, Ravindra Jadeja will fancy his chances of getting a game, coming in for either Sreesanth or Munaf Patel.India (probable): 1 M Vijay, 2 Gautam Gambhir (capt), 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Yusuf Pathan, 7 Ravindra Jadeja , 8 Wriddiman Saha (wk), 9 Ashwin, 10 Sreesanth / Munaf Patel, 11 Ashish Nehra
Stats and trivia Sreesanth has the second-worst economy rate in the list of bowlers who have played at least 50 ODIs and taken 50 wickets
India have played 10 games in Jaipur and lost four. They beat South Africa by one run in the last game played at this venue in February 2010.Quotes”I spoke to the curator and he told me that the wicket on which Hyderabad got out for 21 [in the Ranji Trophy] had lots of grass on it and now they have shaved it off. But I don’t think it’s (the nature of the wicket) a concern because we have played on all kinds of wickets. Rather than worrying about the wicket we need to be thinking about what we should do.”

Everton in talks to sign Brennan Johnson

Everton are reportedly now in fresh talks to sign Brennan Johnson in the summer.

The Lowdown: Standout season

The Welshman is certainly having a standout season at Nottingham Forest, where he has managed no fewer than 15 goals and a further nine assists in the Championship so far (Transfermarkt), playing a big part in their promotion push.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-4/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He has recently picked up the division’s Young Player of the Season award, and at just 20 years of age, his ceiling is quite high.

The Latest: Everton talks with Johnson

As per The Independent, Johnson’s representatives have held ‘productive meetings’ with Everton ‘in the last week’, although their ability to sign him may depend on whether they avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Brentford have already offered personal terms to the Wales international, while Leicester City, Newcastle United and Villarreal are also interested in his signature.

Johnson is ‘unlikely’ to sign a new deal at Forest unless they get promoted, with his current contract set to expire in 2023. He is ‘expected’ to go for a fee of between £20m and £25m, should they end up selling him this summer.

The Verdict: Sign him

Johnson is one of the rising stars of British football, so it would be a real coup for the Toffees if they can attract him to Merseyside, especially with the spectre of relegation a clear and present threat.

Described as a ‘different animal’ on the pitch by Paul Bodin, who worked with him when in charge of Wales’ under-19s and later with the under-21s, Johnson seemingly has the fire in his belly to make something happen for his team, which is the kind of character that Frank Lampard’s side could really use right now.

Nonetheless, perhaps with a few players sold, £20m-£25m should be an affordable price range for Everton.

Newcastle transfer news on Nunez

Keith Downie has now dropped some exciting Newcastle United transfer news involving Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Offer reports

The St. James’ Park faithful have reportedly already made an offer for Nunez, as they look to chase a marquee signing in the summer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-5/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He is one of the most sought-after players in European football at the moment after scoring 33 goals in just 38 matches in total over all competitions so far this season (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Nunez watched

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Sky Sports journalist and North East reporter Downie has now shared that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) have indeed ‘watched’ Nunez ahead of a potential move in the summer, although he did not confirm if an offer has been made:

“Nunez is someone they’ve looked at, they’ve watched. I think a proven goalscorer on the European stage will be one of the main priorities, if not the priority in the summer.”

The Verdict: Exciting

It is certainly exciting for the Toon Army to be linked with a player like Nunez going into the summer, even if Downie believes they are just at the scouting stage right now.

After their 1-0 win at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Wednesday night, they are almost certainly safe now on 40 points, and so can start planning ahead in the long-term project.

They will struggle to attract Nunez ahead of other teams with no European football to offer, but at 22 years of age, you would think that there could be another opportunity to sign him down the line, once the Tyneside outfit really start to make a name for themselves on the world stage.

Shahid Afridi, Pakistan’s one-day captain, says his team is looking forward to getting back to cricket after four days of being in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Pakistan play Somerset in Taunton on Thursday in their first game since the spot-fixing controversy broke.”We had a very good practice session yesterday [Tuesday],” he said at Somerset’s County Ground. “What has happened has gone. We are here to play good cricket. It’s a big challenge for me personally, playing in English conditions is always difficult.”Myself and the coach [Waqar Younis] are trying to keep morale high. It’s always very difficult in these conditions against a good team but they are all really focused.”Three members of the squad – Test captain Salman Butt, and fast bowlers Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif – have left for London, where they are due to meet top administrative and diplomatic officials on Thursday.Afridi, who resigned the Test captaincy after Pakistan’s 150-run loss against Australia in July, joined the squad after the Lord’s Test, which ended in controversy a day after the broke its spot-fixing story.. The rest of the tour – a mix of Twenty20s and ODIs – is in some doubt but Afridi insisted his players would be able to put the furore to one side and concentrate on the task at hand when they faced Somerset. “We are all looking forward to it. It has been really difficult but we can forget everything, get out, play the cricket and entertain the people.”There were protests outside Pakistan’s hotel in London but there were none at their Taunton hotel and the Somerset chief executive Richard Gould was confident Thursday’s match would pass off without spectator unrest.”We are not anticipating anything of that order,” Gould told reporters. “We’ve got a really good family atmosphere generally in the ground and I think that’s going to be all-pervading tomorrow (Thursday).”I suspect there might be a little bit of humour thrown in, with a few comments, but we won’t let anything go beyond light-hearted banter.”
