Leeds United have the youngest squad in the Premier League with an average age of 24.4 according to Transfermarkt.

However, the Whites do have some senior figures in their ranks that have hit the age of 30, one of which is right-back, Luke Ayling.

Back in August 2016, the Yorkshire club secured a deal for the defender from Bristol City. Since then, the Englishman has gone on to make a total of 220 appearances for Leeds across all competitions.

In those appearances, the defender has chipped in with eight goals and eight assists along the way.

At the age of 30, Ayling will be entering the final year of his current contract at Elland Road at the end of the month.

With that in mind, it could be worth Victor Orta looking to bring in a suitable long-term replacement for the veteran.

Despite securing a deal for RB Salzburg defender Rasmus Kristensen, another right-back that could fit the bill under Jesse Marsch that has been linked with a move to the club in the last few weeks is Sergino Dest.

After working his way through Ajax’s youth ranks and into their senior side, the 21-year-old then joined Barcelona back in October 2020 in a deal worth £23.8m.

With 182 club appearances under his belt for his past and present clubs, the full-back has scored 11 goals and delivered 20 assists in the process.

Having ended the recent La Liga campaign with the fourth-highest average of dribbles per game (1.8), it certainly shows how he could be a good replacement for Ayling, who ended his recent Premier League season with the third-highest average of dribbles per game (0.9) in the squad.

Despite predominantly playing as a right-back, the youngster has been deployed in all sorts of different defensive and attacking positions on both sides of the pitch this season.

This sort of versatility could make him a very useful squad option for Leeds going forward.

Labelled by Dani Alves as a player that “has everything to be one of football’s greats,” Dest is currently valued at a mighty £59m by CIES.

Given his young age and the pedigree he has of having played at two of Europe’s biggest clubs, signing the full-back could be a very impressive feat for Orta to pull off and deliver Leeds their dream long-term heir for Ayling.

The American link between Dest and Marsch in addition to getting the chance to play in the Premier League to go head-to-head against some of the best teams and players in the world could make it a very tempting prospect for the player.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur are currently ‘not in talks’ to sign Juventus forward Paulo Dybala and will not be looking to sign him this summer.

The Argentine joined the Serie A outfit from Palermo back in 2015 when he put pen to paper on a five-year deal, and he has since gone on to make 293 appearances for the Bianconeri during his seven-year spell at the Allianz Stadium.

However, the 28-year-old recently confirmed that he would be leaving the Turin giants upon the expiry of his contract at the end of the month. That announcement initially appeared to have grabbed the attention of multiple Premier League clubs, including the Lilywhites, who had reportedly registered their interest in the striker.

Following a fresh update from Romano, though, it now seems highly unlikely that Spurs will be making a move for the Argentina international as the summer transfer window fast approaches.

The Verdict: Conte mustn’t be keen

Spurs came very close to signing the 33-cap international in 2019, so it’s no surprise to see that they apparently reignited their interest in him earlier this year, especially considering his impressive record in the final third. He racked up 21 goal contributions in 39 matches across all competitions for Juventus this season, as per Transfermarkt.

After receiving an extra £150m investment as a result of successfully securing Champions League football next season, Antonio Conte will now be able to use part of this vast sum to fund any potential new signings that he wants to bring in ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, in the hope of the club being able to get their hands on some silverware in the near future.

The north Londoners are in need of a new striker to provide competition and backup for Harry Kane, who is currently the only natural centre-forward in N17, but it seems that the 52-year-old must now feel that Dybala isn’t the right fit for his squad if Spurs aren’t keen on the Argentine.

West Ham United could pounce on Bologna defender Arthur Theate, according to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

Bologna brought in Theate from homeland club KV Oostende last summer on an initial loan with an obligation to buy.

The 22-year-old Belgian, who’s been capped twice by his country, played 31 Serie A matches in his first season at the club.

A report from The Evening Standard has already revealed that David Moyes wants to buy ‘at least one’ new centre-back during the summer transfer window.

The report states that Theate ‘could be sacrificed’ if manager Sinisa Mihajlovic opts to play with four at the back next season.

He would be made available for a fee of around €10million, the equivalent of £8.5million.

The verdict

What attributes does Theate offer as a centre-back?

Well, he makes a high number of progressive passes, ranking in the 74th percentile in Europe, and his 2.64 interceptions per 90 minutes (85th percentile) suggest he reads the game well too.

But perhaps his standout asset is his ball carrying, with Theate in the 85th percentile for progressive carries and as high as the 94th for dribbles completed.

In terms of a stylistic profile, he’s a close match for Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig has hailed him as ‘one of Serie A’s biggest revelations’ and suggested in December that he could be worth up to €18million (£15.3million). West Ham could end up signing him for nearly half what some would consider his true worth.

Theate, then, looks like a potential bargain that would help to address one of Moyes’ transfer priorities.

With that being said, Aurelien Tchouameni is a reported target that Liverpool wants to pursue and if they could build some transfer funds this summer it could put the club in a good position to make a competitive offer for the Monaco midfielder.

Jurgen Klopp has delivered an injury update on Liverpool defender Joe Gomez after a ‘real shock’ injury scare during the Reds’ Premier League clash against Southampton on Tuesday night.

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has been told to ‘hold back’ by talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino after the Italian’s message on Eric Dier.

The former Sporting Lisbon star has been shining as a member of Conte’s back three at Spurs, prompting England boss Gareth Southgate to grant him a recall to the national team squad.

However, the 28-year-old shone as part of Conte’s back three over 2021/22, making more clearances per 90 than any Spurs player whilst racking up the second-most blocks in that time (WhoScored).

In terms of likeness to Bonucci, it isn’t beyond the realms of possibility that Dier could replicate the 35-year-old’s leadership qualities in the Lilywhites dressing room – especially given his experience of 328 appearances for the club and 45 caps for England.
