Lodha proposals hearing postponed to April 5

Friday’s hearing in the Supreme Court relating to how the BCCI plans to implement the various recommendations proposed by the Lodha Committee in January, has been postponed to April 5

Nagraj Gollapudi17-Mar-2016Friday’s hearing in the Supreme Court relating to how the BCCI plans to implement the various recommendations proposed by the Lodha Committee in January, has been postponed to April 5. According to the legal counsels involved in the case, as per the supplementary list released by the Supreme Court, they were informed that the bench will not be sitting on Friday. There was no specific reason given for the postponement. This allows the BCCI a bit more breathing space as it was expected to face further chin music from the two-judge bench of the Supreme Court hearing the case.At the last hearing, held on March 3, the bench comprising Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justice Ibrahim Kalifullah strongly retorted at every argument raised against the Lodha Committee recommendations by the host of counsels representing the BCCI and various state associations.Offering minor respite to the BCCI, the court said that it would ascertain whether the objections raised against a few of the recommendations could be entertained. If the bench could not sort it, it said, then it would approach the Lodha Committee to review “very limited points”.When the hearing reopens, the BCCI is likely to present detailed audited accounts statements of the board’s disbursement to the states in the last five years. That was one specific demand of the court at the March 3 hearing, as the bench wanted to know how the states had spent the money on development of infrastructure among other things.*15:45 GMT – This story was updated following the news that the hearing was postponed

Speaking ahead of the clash against the Magpies, Ten Hag commented on a possible return to the starting line-up for the young midfielder. "If he's ready or not, he showed on Sunday [vs Everton] he was ready," Ten Hag said. "We have to manage three games in six days to get the best results of all the games. We have more than 11 players, we have good options there. Sofyan [Amrabat] also showed he was playing a very good game. We have the options, you manage the load of the players and it's about freshness as well."

When asked what impressed him most about the midfielder, Ten Hag added: "His scanning. It looks like he always has time because he is scanning, he is running free, then he is scanning to see the options and then make the right decisions. He can delay, he can speed up. He makes the right decisions."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mainoo's performance in the Premier League is only made more impressive when considering it was his first game in the starting line-up after a four-month spell on the sidelines, after suffering an ankle injury in pre-season.

Northeast outshines Henriques as Kent win

That proved too much for Surrey as they finished on 170 for 8.Australia allrounder Moises Henriques scored a 47-ball 63 on his Surrey debut and also took 2 for 24 with the ball, but Kent’s bowlers were always in control and an asking rate of 13 an over for the last five overs, with half their side out, was too much for the visitors.Kent’s third win in four games puts them back on top of the South Group table and immediately puts behind them a wretched performance against Middlesex at Lord’s 24 hours earlier, where they were crushed by 115 runs after being bowled out for 90 inside 15 overs.Insights

Kent are the only county without an overseas players this season but with some exciting young talent they shouldn’t be discounted to mount a decent challenge this season. They followed last week’s stunning win against Hampshire with a tame display at Lord’s on Thursday, but given they were chasing in excess of 200 it’s hard to read too much into the batting display.
Sam Northeast’s two fifties in three innings represent the fulfilment of potential that all his young team need to make if they are to continue to challenge teams with star overseas players and greater international pedigree in a very strong South Group. Surrey meanwhile will be ruing the form of Jason Roy who, leading run-scorer last season, has managed just 13 runs from three innings so far this time around.
Freddie Wilde

Surrey were always up against it after losing both openers Jason Roy and Steven Davies in the first over of their chase.Roy, having hit Matt Coles for two offside fours from the second and third balls of the innings, was lbw to the fourth and Kumar Sangakkara, anxious to get off the mark, called for a sharp single to square leg and saw Northeast’s diving underarm throw score a direct hit on the stumps to run out Davies before he had faced a ball.Sangakkara pulled sixes off Mitch Claydon and Calum Haggett but his quickfire 34 ended when he skied Darren Stevens to deep mid-off. Henriques, who had pulled Claydon for six early in his innings, launched further maximums off Cowdrey and Stevens over long-off, but Surrey’s chances were all but gone by the time he hit Coles straight to Cowdrey at deep cover in the 19th over.Haggett, despite being hit for six by Henriques in his final over, was the pick of Kent’s attack and deservedly picked up the scalp of Azhar Mahmood, just after he had smashed Cowdrey straight for two sixes in the 16th over to keep Surrey’s fading hopes alive. The final over, from Claydon, began with Surrey needing 30 and by then Kent were home and dry.Kent’s innings, which began 20 minutes late due to a heavy shower, was given explosive early impetus by Northeast and Joe Denly following the fall of Daniel Bell-Drummond for 5.The third over, bowled by Mahmood, disappeared for 24 runs as Northeast lifted a no-ball over midwicket for six and then thumped the ensuing free hit in the same direction for four.Kent brought up their 50 in the fourth over, but quickly lost two more wickets when Denly and Sam Billings departed as Kent reached the end of the six-over Powerplay on 60 for 3.Northeast, joined by Cowdrey, immediately revitalised the innings by hitting Gareth Batty’s offspin high over midwicket and long on for successive sixes as he sped towards a 22-ball fifty.Cowdrey warmed to his task with a six and four off the suffering Batty and Kent’s hundred arrived in the 10th over when Northeast drove Zafar Ansari’s first ball for six. The 150 was raised in the 14th over as the fourth-wicket pair continued to score at a good lick.Cowdrey finally toe-ended a short wide ball from Henriques to point and Stevens was brilliantly caught by a diving Curran at third man for one as a flurry of Kent wickets fell towards the end.One of them was acting captain Northeast, who fell just short of his maiden T20 century when he was snared by Curran off the first ball of the final over.

The Red Devils are set to face Danish opposition in European action at Old Trafford on Tuesday. Erik ten Hag’s side desperately need to pick up three points in that contest having opened their continental campaign for 2023-24 with back-to-back defeats against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray.

Achouri is hoping to help spring a surprise in Manchester, with Copenhagen having picked up one point so far, and is looking forward to locking horns with fellow countryman Hannibal. He has, however, been warned by a familiar face to not let emotion get the better of him when turning out at the so-called ‘Theatre of Dreams’.

WHAT THEY SAID

Achouri has told : “It will be a huge moment for me, one of the greatest in my career. I need to stay focused and not let it get into my head. I’m professional and I’m going to Old Trafford to help the team and get a great result for the club. I told Hannibal that we are going to win the match. I think we are going to exchange shirts after the match because he is my friend. It is going to be a cool moment for both of us. I called Hannibal after the draw for the group stages and during the international break we talked about the match as well, so it will be exciting. He told me to chill a bit and not kill their players. I told him that I have to or at least give it a try. I know him very well from the national team and both of us grew up in France, so we have a really good connection.”

‘Absurd’ Lionel Messi barber story in Miami highlights how ‘normal’ eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is

Former USMNT star Taylor Twellman has told an “absurd” story about Lionel Messi and a barber shop visit that shows how “normal” the Argentine is.

Argentine icon moved to America in 2023Has never been one to chase the limelightMade an impact on & off the field in USAGetty/GOALWHAT HAPPENED?

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is one of the most recognisable people on the planet, with his level of celebrity transcending his chosen profession. He is considered to occupy a talent bracket alongside the likes of pop icon Taylor Swift when it comes to worldwide appeal and global marketing power.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Messi is, however, a quiet character away from the field and is not one to chase the limelight. He proved as much shortly after linking up with MLS side Inter Miami and moving his family to America. The Messis have tried to blend in as much as possible after setting up camp in Fort Lauderdale.

GettyWHAT TWELLMAN SAID ABOUT MESSI

Ex-United States international Twellman has told the of experiencing how humble Messi is during his own visit to Florida: “I’m walking around town and I step into this barber’s shop. It’s kind of busy. I walk in and there is Messi stuff all over. Apparently, this is the shop where he first needed a hair cut. He walked in, with two of his boys, waited in line and was like ‘hey, I’d like to get cleaned up’. That’s how normal he is. It’s the most absurd thing. This is a global superstar. He’s on the same par as Taylor Swift. He’s walking into a barber’s shop, waiting and all the barbers are looking and going ‘who’s the 5’7 dude that just walked in looking like Messi and asking to get cleaned up?’”

WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI?

Messi has made an immediate impact on and off the field in Miami, and there is no sign of interest in his exploits waning during 2024. He remains the biggest of draws in MLS and has his sights set on landing more major silverware for a franchise that is co-owned by another global icon – former Manchester United and England superstar, David Beckham.

ICC rules out changes to ODI rules before World Cup

The amendments to the ODI playing conditions introduced in October 2011 will stay in place till next year’s World Cup, the ICC has said

Amol Karhadkar21-Mar-2014The amendments to the ODI playing conditions introduced in October 2011 will stay in place till next year’s World Cup, the ICC has said. The amendments include the use of two new balls, which has been opposed by India and other south Asian countries as it affects spinners.ICC chief executive Dave Richardson has said the regulations will be reviewed after the marquee event, to be hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand. India has been the flag-bearer of the subcontinental countries’ movement against the new rules, which at times have resulted in the balance of the game tilting heavily in favour of the batsmen.”We’re not going to consider any changes prior to the World Cup,” Richardson said in Dhaka on Friday. “After the World Cup the rules will be reviewed by the cricket committee again. As I said, we wanted to create a more attacking 50-over game, one that could compete on the entertainment scales with T20 cricket. It’s too early to say. I think it’s led to a moreattacking game from a bowling and fielding perspective.”The BCCI, who had consistently raised the matter during ICC Board meetings over the last year, said they couldn’t do anything till the World Cup but stuck to their stand. “There is a need to review is what India has been saying and there should be a fair contest between bat and ball which isn’t the case now,” a BCCI insider told ESPNcricinfo. In fact, the BCCI’s attempt to get the system overhauled was foiled in an ICC Chief Executives’ meeting in September 2013. “There was a voting process and India along with Pakistan, Bangladesh voted against use of twonew balls,” BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel had said after the meeting. “Australia, New Zealand, England and Zimbabwe were among those in favour of using two new balls while West Indies and South Africa abstained from voting. We have expressed our reservations about using of two new balls.”According to the new regulations that came in place in October 2012, two fielders are allowed outside the 30-yard circle in the mandatory Powerplay of ten overs, and three during the batting Powerplay, which needs to be taken between the 16th and the 40th over. At other times, a maximum of four fielders can be placed outside the circle, a reduction from theearlier five. Most importantly, two new balls are used from each end.The use of two new balls has resulted in the spinners finding it difficult to get into the game. Besides, in subcontinental conditions, reverse swing is also almost taken out of equation, thus resulting in the totals moving upwards with every passing series. In fact, India captain MS Dhoni said during the high-scoring ODI series against Australia last year that the new rules had converted bowlers into “bowling machines”.”Yes, runs per over might have increased and bowlers, at times on flat wickets, find it very tough,” Richardson said. “But essentially the best bowlers are still top of the bowling rankings and the best batsmen still top of the batting rankings.”We just might need to change our perceptions. In the old days, if you scored a run a ball everyone said you had a tremendous strike-rate. Now they’re saying you have to be 120-130. Same with the bowlers. In the old days, Fanie de Villiers got upset if he went for more than three runs per over. Now, bowlers only get upset when they go for more than six runs an over. Yes, things have changed. But I don’t necessarily think for the bad.”Another BCCI functionary agreed that “too many changes just before the World Cup won’t be good” but stressed that the BCCI will continue to strive for getting the balance of ODIs back in place after the World Cup.

Carberry ton brings hard-fought draw

It was a shame that the only day of this encounter unblemished by rain merely saw the game home to a draw but Michael Carberry scored a fine, second hundred of the season, to steer his side to safety.

Vithushan Ehantharajah at New Road11-Jun-2014
ScorecardMichael Carberry, seen here for England, made his second century of the season•Getty ImagesIt was a shame that the only day of this encounter unblemished by rain merely saw the game home to a draw but for Michael Carberry there was much to fight for. On the eve of England’s first Test since the climax of an Ashes whitewash that he was part of, he scored a fine, second hundred of the season, to steer his side to safety. Those in the stands expecting a classic were disappointed – the result leaves both sides level on points at the top of the table, with Worcestershire in first position on head-to-head encounters – even if they were treated to a dogged performance from the visitors that earned the applause offered to Hampshire at stumps. For starters, there was no guarantee that Hampshire would accrue a lead, let alone as quickly as they did.Carberry’s first innings had ended after one ball when he cleanly found leg slip at the end of day two, smashing a water bottle onto the roof of a building next to the Hampshire end of the balcony. Yesterday evening – with two leg slips for company – he rushed a single of his second ball to get off a pair, before settling down and passing 11,000 career runs in first-class cricket before stumps. Today, he was a calming influence, displaying the sort of patience and sharp bat speed that has earned him many plaudits. He was candid at the close; focused very much on Hampshire to “keep doing what I’m doing”. His skipper Jimmy Adams was effusive in his praise of a special innings and scrappy performance today. “We haven’t had to deal with having our backs against the wall,” Adams said. “it’s a real test of character. Everyone who batted today really took that on. We’re delighted, in a weird way.”Worcestershire’s task was made a tad simpler before play when Danny Briggs, who was in as nightwatchman, returned home for the birth of his first child. But Carberry was smart against Saeed Ajmal, to ensure there was no repeat of his brilliance; eight wickets on day three but not a penny on day four, going for nearly four-an-over in 28 overs – even the greats have their off days. But Caberry deserves credit for sticking to a gameplan of playing everything from out in front of him, except the odd cut that he thumped behind point. He even began driving Ajmal, causing the offspinner to shy away from giving him anything too wide – it took him 19 overs on the final day before he beat Carberry’s outside edge.On 86 at the time, Carberry pushed back after the “Oooo” from the stands died down, before nodding down the wicket and setting up again. The next over, he charged Shaaiq Choudry and lofted him over his head for six to move into the nineties. Two overs later, he had his hundred, which he politely acknowledged, before getting back to work.At the other end, Glenn Maxwell had lightened Carberry’s load with some clean hits and just as many skews to the boundary. It was his first assault of Ajmal, in which Maxwell took 24 runs off the first 12 balls he faced off him, that ended Ajmal’s morning stint. The hundred partnership took just 22.1 overs and, as Maxwell brought out his reverse-sweeps to manoeuvre a tired field, slowly realising that a win was being taken away from them. That fourth wicket stand was eventually ended at 149, Charlie Morris picking up his third wicket of the day when Maxwell was trapped on the crease to a ball that he expected would bounce higher. By then, a lead of 54 had been established.Perhaps if Maxwell remained there could have been a frenetic late afternoon dash allowing Hampshire to set up an audacious chase. Adams couldn’t help but laugh at the idea, revealing that Sean Ervine, padded up, had to stop watching as Maxwell tested his nerve with contorted wrists in order to fashion boundaries when only stern-fisted jabs were needed. They hope he will be available for more Championship cricket. He certainly gave the game a welcome edge.
